On our first visit we arrived around 7p and the place was packed. We opted to try later. Second visit was about 6pm on a Saturday. We were the only patrons for awhile. Slow. We ordered a sandwich of Spanish meats and cheeses. Adequate. We ordered a "flatbread" that arrived with a HUGELY super puffy crust. Too bad because the topping of sauce and anchovy was lost in all that dough. The Vino: In The City I am used to $10.00-$17.00 glasses of wine. A bit cheeky to charge about the same in Martinez IMHO. Nowhere did we see the option for a tasting or flight which is a shame, since being clueless about Spanish wines, I would have love to sample 4 or 5 without dropping $100 on wine alone and winding up blitzed. Upon further thought, we could have requested a half pour, but something tells me that is probably not an option. So. Bar Cava is a place with a vision, and they seemed to have effectively realized that vision. A wine bar - yes, but much more than that. They've augmented the wine selections with a menu of food (small plates and entrees) that is constantly evolving and updating. Great choices in tapas style small plates and the wine list available by the glass is the best around! I am gluten intolerant so I brought my own rice crackers so I was prepared. My husband enjoyed the toasted bread. We enjoyed Spanish ham, a green salad, several cheeses and warm olives. It was like the picnics we sometimes have at home.I think there was another locally cured meat treat but the name escapes me. We made a light dinner out of it but a good choice for a glass of wine and a tidbit before or after the rest of your evening's entertainment. I hope I return soon! read more

5/5. Really nice vibe and would recommend stopping by for wine and some tapas before/after your main dinner. Reasonably priced so you can get away with several drinks and a few tapas for around $50. Only two person tables available other than the bar, so ideal for a date, but not so much for groups. Nice selection of wine, cheese, and tapas. We especially enjoyed the warm olives and the papas bravas. Wouldn't get the tortilla espanola again but next time we want to try their jamon serrano and bocadillo. I'm not a cava (think champagne) person so I went with a rioja that was OK and then a tempranillo that was really on point. read more

A friend who is a musician was playing at this place last night so we decided to give it a try. They have cocktails, wine and beer and a small menu with bar bites and a few other items. Tried to order the Brie and fig quesadilla, but they ran out which was disappointing since it sounded delicious. Our second choice was the loaded tater tots and they hit the spot. I had the best mai tai i have ever had as it was not made with a mix so it was not too sweet. My husband was equally impressed with his old fashioned. We were outside to listen to the music, but I went inside to use the restroom. Cute, small place with brick walls. Will definitely be back. read more

I am so glad I finally got a chance to check this place out! It's a great addition to downtown Martinez and ever since I saw the picture of the deviled eggs on Yelp, I knew I needed to try them! I came in on a Friday evening with a couple of friends and it was busy but thankfully we found three seats at the bar. Nate who was helping us did a great job in finding a wine that we would each like while one of our friends had been here before and already in love with one of the Brooklyn beers they carry. For dinner we decided to get a bunch of plates and try them and I am glad we did. We ordered the deviled eggs, mac & cheese with chorizo (also comes with bacon), spanish ham and a beet salad. All of the items were really good but I have to say the mac & cheese is a must! Next time I will definitely try the patatas bravas and the mushroom ajillo with sunny side up egg. The customer service here is incredibly friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere is very cool - especially with the brick wall on one side and wine wall on the other. read more

This is a great laid back place. Way better than anything in Walnut Creek. As always, in general, I will concentrate on the bad. However, besides the nit picky comments I place here this place is fitting for the majority. I was in on a Sunday trying out the limited but fulfilling brunch menu. I say limited because I've been here on a Saturday night and the menu was deliciously diverse and had palate accommodating dishes. On this Sunday, however, the brunch menu was fixed. Meaning if you had any allergies of any kind, particularly lactose in our case, the menu is off limits. So we winded up not ordering. That didn't stop us from ordering the well priced mimosas at 5 bucks a pop. Great tasting mimosas but a bit disappointed at the fact the had bottled OJ. I'd figure a place that portrays itself as a higher caliber type of locale they will use fresh pressed OJ. Oh well. We had a great time and the staff is super friendly every time we have been there (3Xs). One thing I have to mention is the manager was totally apologetic about the menu being not lactose tolerant. And let's just say apologetic to the point of giving us reprieve on the tab. Go and you'll appreciate the place. For sure. read more

Holy moly, this place is amazing! Happened to stop by yesterday for a cup of coffee on my way to work and endup having breakfast. I'm in love with the open face egg sandwich- simple food, but sooo good... And the coffee - The Bay Area has so many places with good coffee, but this one just made it to the top of my list. Well-brewed, the best I had for a really long time. I also really enjoyed the calming atmosphere and ambience. The staff and the owner Corey, are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about their wine and food. Really top notch service! I live in the East Bay, but this place is well worth my drive and I can't wait to try this place again at night time. I came in on a Sunday. Was not busy which was great. I ordered a beer. The menu was easy to read. Noticed the bulletin board... there's Specials, and even happy hour specials. I asked the young lady who was at the bar if they have food specials outside the menu. Just so happens that they have Eggs Benedict. I was not in the mood for if but given the lager I was drinking... it just sounded great. It didn't take long... eggs were well made... poached. It was really good. Sliced ham and hollandaise sauce on toasted English muffin. It very well made! I liked the light bed of arugula, it was a nice touch! Just watching the game, short conversation, good food and a beer. I went to Bar Cava expecting a Spanish Wine and Tapas bar and that didnt happen. I like the Bar and the guy who served us was very nice but I left thoroughly confused. In addition they were out of have of their menu items. It was the day after a Holiday so I give them a pass. So here is the deal. Other than the name there is hardly any Spanish influence on the menu or even wine list. Putting Chorizo on Mac'Cheesr doesn't make it Spanish. They have a Cheese Melt Sandwich that iur server said was their most popular item. It has prosciutto, aged cheddar and brie on sourdiugh. Literally everything except Spanish. Here is an idea, Manchego an Serrano ham instead. Instant Spain.also, the "Flat Bread" was just a loaf of sliced french bread with cheese and salami in a toaster oven. Not flat but definitely bread. I gave it 3 stars cuz i grade on a curve, the bar is nice and prices are reasonable. That being said, it needs to step up its game. Good enough for Martinez will only take you so far. read more

Love this place!! My husband and I have been several times now with friends and also just the two of us. We've never not had a great time! Fun wine selection, and the small bites are fantastic. If you're hungrier than that you can order food to be delivered so that you don't have to leave your wine (we recommend Troy next door)! They do fun pairing nights, too (Caymus was last weekend's). Such a fun place if you're into wine bars. They have such a great selection they are so hospitable. From the moment I walked in they've been so accommodating and happy to serve. Great establishment. The set up is really cute. It has a great ambience, coming here after work is great. They do offer wine tasting and some great appetizers/food to compliment the wine.
