I live nearby and really wanted to love this cafe! I came in for a tea and pastry and was told after buying my tea (10 min in) that nobody except those "actively eating" could remain at the tables. I was working on homework, another table was just chatting.. these seem like normal cafe things? The petite woman who was running the counter and told us this had an attitude. If there was a special event, there should have been signage. If this is normal cafe policy, there should have also been signage. Had the woman working been at all pleasant and/or clear about needing the tables, I would have been a repeat customer. read more

Got a chai latte and an inch was missing from the top of an already small cup, plus it was $4 for such a small size even without the fact that they only fill the cup three quarters full. The employee was really nice and explained which items were vegan. I ordered the Potato Knish, which was really cheap. It was about $4.50. There is a $5 credit card minimum. But she said that since I was a first time customer that she would let it slide this one time, which was kind. Another pro: the cash register did NOT ask for a tip when paying with card. The Potato Knish was a bit too oily. I probably would not order it again but I did appreciate trying something new. read more

For what it is, this place is excellent! It's the closest place you can grab a meal to JTS and UTS. It's not kosher, but they don't have any meat, just fish and dairy, so most JTS folks are comfortable eating here. Inexplicably the prices haven't gone up in 10 years; you can still get a single espresso for $2, double for $2.75. It's not amazing but it's drinkable and the location is convenient. The soups are hearty but way too salty, especially the lentil and the split pea. There's a spinach pie (spanakopita) for $4.50 that's the cheapest meal around, and delicious to book. There's one gender neutral restroom in the back, and room for around 15 people to sit at tables. Courteous service. They prefer cash especially under $7. read more

My favorite place of all time. I come here several times a week because of the great people who work here and delicious food. You have to get the avocado salad. It's one of the best salads I've ever had. They also make terrific cappuccinos. Norman owns the place. He's so nice and friendly. Marilyn works at the counter and she's fantastic at what she does and knows so much about everything. Jonathan also works at the counter and he's just a funny, laid-back, cool guy. I love this place. Looks like a cafe where you could sit down and enjoy your drink, but instead they will tell you you can't sit down in their room even when it is empty, because we didn't order a plate and just ordered a pastry and coffee. The cashier is incredibly rude, and the place doesn't care about its customers enjoying their time there. On top of that, their food can be mediocre, for instance the vineyard leaves are leafy and bland. read more

I just moved to NYC from Virginia, and I was looking for close coffee shops. This place popped up and I had to give it a try. The shop owner was very kind, and actually made my order pretty fast. I got the iced cappuccino which, in my opinion rivals that of Starbucks for half the price. I also ordered the mozzarella sandwich, which was hearty and delicious. I used to work across the street and would frequent this place for lunch. I hadn't been there in about 2 years. I was in the neighborhood today and stopped by, hoping it hadn't changed at all...It hadn't. As a vegetarian, it has a lot of options. The vegan soups are amazing and homemade and they have them every day, worth it even in summer. Also, the falafel is great, but even moreso, the baba ghanoush is homemade and out of this world. Apparently the coffee is top-notch, but I can't vouch for that. What I can speak to is the quick turnaround for patrons and a decent selection of prepackaged items, even if it does seem a bit hot in there to keep their assorted chocolate-laden products in good shape. It's got a Mediterranean despite its VERY close proximity to Olive Tree, but assuming they maintain more friendly service and comparably fresh ingredients, they can definitely compete. Purchased a very Early Avocado Hummus Salad sandwich, a Sprinkle Cookie, a Rice Krispy Bar and a Kind+ Bar. The sandwich was quite good in a tightly packed pita. The cookie was the right texture, albeit a bit harder than I'd like (even @ 8am) and seemingly heavy on the fattier portions of cookie batters. The rest it's pretty hard to mess up, though the krispy bar was better than most packaged ones. read more

Friendly service, great Greek salad (the olive oil it is garnished with is perfect), yummy stuffed grape leaves, good hummus and babaganoush, nice selection of teas (Yogi tea and all other kinds of traditional teas too), lots of kosher baked goods, and who can forget they offer cans of Fresca?! I had forgotten all about how wonderful that drink is until I spotted one in a corner of one of the cold cases and enjoyed it with my mushroom barley soup the other day....yum. Usually 2 serve yourself soups are hot and fresh every day, the lentil is good but the mushroom barley is just so delicious. Decent tuna fish sandwiches, falafel is ok, spinach pie is good but greasy as anything. Quick enough service too for a work day lunch, I walk several blocks and back to my office and am always served with plenty of time in my hour left to enjoy my meal. Things I haven't tried but look yummy: avocado salad, egg sandwiches (those are CHEAP too, $2.50 I think), plus I will have to try the coffee now, thanks to all the raves on here! UPDATE: Avocado salad = amazing. Coffee = solidly better than anything 3x the price down Broadway at Starbucks. Yum yum! This is the true definition of a fantastic "hole in the wall" in the midst of Columbia University. It is super clean, unpretentious, but fully stocked with all that you expect from a fast breakfast place in 2017. I am gluten free and vegan... was able to buy a nice cookie with a delicious hot coffee with almond milk. There is also hot food available, but I didn't partake today. This place also has an unexpected seating area where I was able to hang out a bit before my meeting. It is quiet early in the morning, and the person working was polite and friendly. This seems like an excellent place to study, but keep buying something to keep this inexpensive mom and pop shop in business. read more

There was a good amount of seating, the coffee prices were good for the amount of coffee you'd get, and the food seems to be okay. I only had the spinach pie, but it was decent. A Mediterranean theme cafe with many vegetarian dishes, they maintain a friendly service and comparably fresh ingredients. The hot chocolate is amazing being creamy, rich and delicious. I Purchased a Avocado Salad my favorite which has the right amount of spices and vinegar . For snacks I usually buy Banana Bread Loaf and Coke a Cola and take this to the apartment I am in the process of selling. I work in the area and often come here for lunch. Most options are Middle Eastern inspired, but they have a few more streamlined lunch choices like egg salad and tuna. The ingredients are very fresh and everything I have tried has been delicious. I would recommend the avocado salad. It comes in a pita and is full of flavor. I've also tried one of their platters, I believe it was the Greek platter, which was fantastic. Great portions but not heavy, so you don't feel uncomfortably full afterwards. Something I also really love about Broadway Au Lait is the fact that it has a seating area with probably about seven small tables or so. This is a go-to place for me for a quick breakfast, lunch or snack and has saved me many times when I just needed to get something quick. It is popular with students from the Jewish Theological Seminary and Union Theological Seminary. The food is mostly vegetarian with a few fish options. It is not under kosher supervision but many of the packaged products they sell are certified as kosher. Great range of snacks, drinks, bagels, soups, and salads. The middle eastern platter is solid. The people who work there know the regulars - it's a friendly place. There isn't a ton of space to sit but it's usually not too much of a problem. Love this place! read more

Man, I am still bummed I wasted one of my meals here when I had a limited time in New York, but it was getting late and this place was close and came recommended and the Yelp rating checked out. I walked in to somewhere that looked more like a convenience store than a restaurant but still thought this could be one of those hole-in-the-wall hidden treasures. They market themselves as vegetarian but it's really just Kosher Dairy, since they have quite a few fish dishes. I got the veggie burger and the avocado salad and was given them right away from the display case. The roll that the veggie burger was served on was good, but that's about all the good things I could say. Sure, I've had my share of bad veggie burgers, but I've definitely never been to a vegetarian restaurant that had one as bad as this. It looked so promising and then just tasted like peas and carrot mush. I got to a point where I just figured that eating any more would be a waste of calories and moved on to the avocado salad. I do have to say that especially for a pre-prepared salad that's been sitting out all day, the avocados were perfectly ripe with not a brown spot to be found. But there were only a few pieces in the bowl and the rest of the uninspired salad (lettuce, watery tomato) was drowning in bland dressing. Yeah, I know, they scoop it out of the bowl so I probably just got unlucky and didn't get all that much avocado, but let's just say it wasn't enough to salvage the meal. This is probably a good place to buy gum or soda or chips and for a Kosher restaurant it's pretty inexpensive but ultimately, it's a disappointment. read more

The greatest strength of this deli is its seating! I always have classes in Knox across the street, so I often stop by for a coffee and/or bagel in the morning. It's a great pit stop if you need somewhere to sit for 45 min or an hour. I haven't tried much of their food other than a falafel wrap, which was good but not outstanding. If you are a vegetarian then it's your paradise because they have a variety of vegetarian foods available. It's not the best of places that I have seen but... they offer the best service. If you are looking for a place to sit quietly with your coffee this is it . Unlike Starbucks & other coffee joints where you find yourself in line on the 50th place. I loved the cozy small, positive feel to the place. It's one of the places you will find simple foods, calm atmosphere around.
