We were at a show in the North Beach neighborhood that got out late and we were hungry and needed something to eat before heading home, so we ventured into Chinatown for some late night food. Surprisingly, many restaurants weren't open past 9pm, but we found Grant Place restaurant open until 11pm and decided to give it a try. There are so many options for Chinese food in this neighborhood, but it being late, we could only find this restaurant open to serve us dinner. We were waived in by the nice lady cutting meat at the front counter, and we were seated quickly, given menus, and served hot tea. This is what I love about typical Chinese restaurants, its fast service, and efficiency. No pomp & circumstance, wait time, chit-chat, confusion, or dilly-dallying, just sit down, order, eat, and leave. The waiters here were very friendly and efficient, despite us being the final customers of the night. We never felt rushed, ignored, or scorned for being the final customers, we were welcomed & served as if we were the first customers for the dinner period. Everything felt comfortable, welcoming, friendly, and warm. The menu looked pretty basic, but good and offered us some vegetarian options (as well as spicy ones) to satisfy our cravings & interests. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was empty, but everything seemed clean & organized.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] A few waiters remained around, doing closing duties such as cleaning, re-stocking, prepping for the next day, and attending to the remaining/departing customers, yet we were still given attention & good service. Rare to find a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown with good, non-rushed, friendly service, so this was a plus. I even practiced some of my poor Cantonese language skills with our waiter, and he took the time out of his long day & closing duties to engage with me. Nice people here. The food was pretty good and served on the slow side, since we were the last customers, but it wasn't that long of a wait. We ordered the salt & pepper fried tofu, spicy green beans, and some rice. Everything was delicious, fresh, hot, and well-prepared. Generous portions & good flavors with just enough seasoning & spice so that we did not have to use condiments or additional flavorings. I'd like to come back here to try more dishes, and we intend to when we come back to the area. Grant Place restaurant offers later dining hours in a clean environment, friendly & efficient service, generous portions, and good authentic Cantonese & Sichauan Chinese food at affordable prices. It is what you'd expect of a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown, minus the grumpy & mean staff and dirty conditions. It felt like a nice family-run Chinese restaurant that was happy to have our business (despite our being there during closing time). We never felt rushed, unappreciated, neglected, or penalized for our presence. Plus, they served us good food at affordable prices at a late hour with smiles on their faces, and some fun friendly interaction before our departure. A solid lunch choice because I like they have rice plates, dim sum, and their roast duck (and other roast meats) rice plate is tasty and relatively inexpensive compared to other local places. My order came through DoorDash and arrived in about 20 minutes probably because I'm pretty close to the restaurant. I ordered the Duck Chow Mein and the Steamed Shrimp Dumplings, and the portion sizes were just right. The Duck Chow Mein had a generous amount of duck and was tasty overall, but the noodles were a bit dry at first. Once everything was mixed together, the flavor really came through and it got much better. A little more sauce would have made it perfect from the start. The Steamed Shrimp Dumplings were also delicious because it packed with shrimp and exactly what you'd expect from a good har gow. Okay, I thought this place was a tourist trap at first, especially given the dining population demographic. I was walking around looking for a quick bite in Chinatown, so we stopped here. While they were decent, it's clear that the best time for dim sum here is during breakfast or brunch when everything is freshly made and at its peak quality. If you're specifically coming for dim sum, morning is probably the way to go. For our main, we ordered the roast duck over rice. The portion size was generous, and the price was very reasonable, making it a great value. However, we found the duck a bit too salty and much oilier than expected, which made it slightly heavy. If you prefer a lighter roast duck, this might not be the best option. Service was excellent. The staff was fast, attentive, and efficient, even with the late-night crowd. Seating inside can be found, so dining in is an option. They also accept cards and Apple Pay, making payment convenient. I'm not usually one to bash a business but I was very upset with our experience today. We came in with a baby for a quick lunch since we didn't want to wait in line next door at the restaurant we originally wanted to go to. Baby was crying and we were trying to get her to settle in for her nap. After we ordered we were asked by a staff to have one of us leave with the baby while the other one eat. Great little Chinese Restaurant located in the heart of Chinatown!! We stumbled upon this little gem in the afternoon to grab a quick bite. Food was delicious and service was very quick and good. We ordered some dim sum dishes (har gow and shumai) that were still available in the afternoon. And of course chicken chow mein for the wifey. Everything came out fresh and piping hot. Service was excellent. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. They accept cards and Apple Pay; making it very easy and convenient to pay. I've definitely had better Chinese food elsewhere. On the bright side, the prices here are lower compared to other spots--but that might reflect the quality you're getting. The final sticker shock came when they added a default 15% gratuity to the bill (we were a party of 4). We thought this should have been disclosed upfront (even in small or sloppy handwritten fonts). We did a postmortem of why the food fell short of our modest expectations and I believe it's because of its specific location within Chinatown . It's located closer to the various souvenir shops which means it's probably catering more towards the tourists. Picked up goodies for home and (I think her name is) Elaine gave me free samples while waiting for the food. First she introduced this fried sticky ball with ground meat in it. She encouraged me by saying it is really good. I've never had it before and oh it was yummy that I ordered two sets. She gave me a slice of crispy pork after a customer bought a slab. Then as I was walking out she gave me a sesame ball. She told me not to make myself hungry waiting for my son who was taking his SAT that morning a few blocks away. Very rude and discriminatory service towards people of color. My fiancé and I came in and placed an order. When I asked for the sizzling beef, the senior woman with the very short dark gray haircut abruptly corrected me and said, "It's called sizzling beef." I nervously laughed and repeated it the way she said it. She then proceeded to run her mouth, yelling across the restaurant, to another employee, while i was still ordering and had the another employee finish taking our order. Like what????? As we were sitting down for dine-in, she stops by our table then asked how many people were dining in, and we stated said two. Shortly afterwords, she comes back, with ANOTHER white couple trying to SEAT them where we were sitting and told us to get up, we needed to take our food to go instead of having it plated like everyone else. When we asked why our food couldn't be served the same way as the other customers, another employee with short hair brought out tiny plates and told us we could plate the food ourselves. Perfect timing since a lady handed us a flyer of a chinese restaurant and mentioned their ducks and dimsum. Plenty of seats inside the area, good for groups, twos or even alone. I ordered the first two I saw in the menu: Roast duck over rice with fresh greens, Wonton soup, and sesame balls. The Wonton soup has so much noodles. There's free hot tea and iced water. It was good dim sum in a very small restaurant. The employees were very busy rushing from table to table with little streamer baskets and the food was hot and prompt. We did order three different shrimp dumplings and they all tasted different and even the shrimp had different textures to it. All very good food and perfect size for dim sum They never asked if we wanted more food after the initial order, or offered soy sauce or more tea to us. They also didn't inform us that something we had ordered was unavailable until we saw no on the check. Over all it was good, but I would not specifically go to them again. read more

Stopped by for lunch and since we had the dogs with us, we were able to grab a table on the outdoor parklet. We got seated right away but trying to order took awhile. I ended up having to walk into the restaurant to find someone to take our order. Once we ordered, the food took about 15-20 minutes to come out. We ordered shrimp dumplings, pork siu mai, potstickers and spicy green beans and a can of coke. All of that totaled to around $40. This place was especially busy for a random Thursday afternoon (2 pm) so I decided to stop in to see what it was about. For starters, please do not expect superior cleanliness whenever you eat at any Chinatown restaurant in any city but this one particularly kind of just threw me off just a little bit and may have been a lil unappetizing. The food was okay.. not the best but not the worst. The duck was not crispy and almost gelatinous in texture. The beef roll was so soggy I couldn't pick it up with my chopsticks and just gave up on it. The best part we're the dim sum shrimp balls. This place was busier than the others around and figured that was a good sign. We were helped immediately and sat outside. We started off with our tea and ordered our food. The food didn't take long at all, and it all tasted really fresh and yummy. I wouldn't say this was the best tasting food, but it was fresh and big in portion. I liked the set up of this restaurant because you can see their meats and I felt like that was an authentic touch . Feb2024 We were looking for things to bring back to the hotel, and wandered by during our adventures that evening. I used to eat here as a kid every now and then with the rents when I was growing up so it was nice to swing by again. Staff helped with any questions that we had. We had ordered har gow, shu mai, yang chow fried rice, basic congee, and the stir fried green beans. Not the best, but it met our needs which was nifty. Plus, the location stays open later than other places which really helps. Flavors were pretty good. I'd say I liked the green beans and the congee best, though the congee was more porridge than it's included ingredients. Fried rice was cooked well though it needed more salt. read more
