We were at a show in the North Beach neighborhood that got out late and we were hungry and needed something to eat before heading home, so we ventured into Chinatown for some late night food. Surprisingly, many restaurants weren't open past 9pm, but we found Grant Place restaurant open until 11pm and decided to give it a try. There are so many options for Chinese food in this neighborhood, but it being late, we could only find this restaurant open to serve us dinner. We were waived in by the nice lady cutting meat at the front counter, and we were seated quickly, given menus, and served hot tea. This is what I love about typical Chinese restaurants, its fast service, and efficiency. No pomp & circumstance, wait time, chit-chat, confusion, or dilly-dallying, just sit down, order, eat, and leave. The waiters here were very friendly and efficient, despite us being the final customers of the night. We never felt rushed, ignored, or scorned for being the final customers, we were welcomed & served as if we were the first customers for the dinner period. Everything felt comfortable, welcoming, friendly, and warm. The menu looked pretty basic, but good and offered us some vegetarian options (as well as spicy ones) to satisfy our cravings & interests. The restaurant was empty, but everything seemed clean & organized. A few waiters remained around, doing closing duties such as cleaning, re-stocking, prepping for the next day, and attending to the remaining/departing customers, yet we were still given attention & good service. Rare to find a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown with good, non-rushed, friendly service, so this was a plus. I even practiced some of my poor Cantonese language skills with our waiter, and he took the time out of his long day & closing duties to engage with me. Nice people here. The food was pretty good and served on the slow side, since we were the last customers, but it wasn't that long of a wait. We ordered the salt & pepper fried tofu, spicy green beans, and some rice. Everything was delicious, fresh, hot, and well-prepared. Generous portions & good flavors with just enough seasoning & spice so that we did not have to use condiments or additional flavorings. I'd like to come back here to try more dishes, and we intend to when we come back to the area. Grant Place restaurant offers later dining hours in a clean environment, friendly & efficient service, generous portions, and good authentic Cantonese & Sichauan Chinese food at affordable prices. It is what you'd expect of a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown, minus the grumpy & mean staff and dirty conditions. It felt like a nice family-run Chinese restaurant that was happy to have our business (despite our being there during closing time). We never felt rushed, unappreciated, neglected, or penalized for our presence. Plus, they served us good food at affordable prices at a late hour with smiles on their faces, and some fun friendly interaction before our departure. We only ordered two items for dinner and overall, it was not that tasty. I ordered the Duck over Rice. There was a generous amount of duck, but it was flavorless. It came with a few pieces of bok choy. We also got "The Special Suggestion" which consists of soup, veggie spring roll, Kung Pao Chicken, sweet and sour pork, and rice. Again, the portions were plentiful but the taste was just okay, not exceptional. It's a very casual restaurant with a deli at the front of the place. Service is okay. Chinatown is full of hidden gems and I think this place is one of them despite being placed in an area with high foot traffic. The ducks in the window definitely call to you and if you order it, it can be salty but it's perfect with a bowl of rice. There's nothing super special about this place but I gotta say their food surprised me so much. Everything was good individually but also all together. If you're just walking around Chinatown and start getting hungry, definitely consider this place. read more

I ordered the Duck Chow Mein and the Steamed Shrimp Dumplings, and the portion sizes were just right. The Duck Chow Mein had a generous amount of duck and was tasty overall, but the noodles were a bit dry at first. Once everything was mixed together, the flavor really came through and it got much better. A little more sauce would have made it perfect from the start. The Steamed Shrimp Dumplings were also delicious because it packed with shrimp and exactly what you'd expect from a good har gow. Okay, I thought this place was a tourist trap at first, especially given the dining population demographic. I was walking around looking for a quick bite in Chinatown, so we stopped here. It is a SUPER Chinatown-looking restaurant, built longer than it is wide. The SF classic. Standard decor, of course, beige, and some fun hanging bbq items in the windows. Service is terse and quick, honestly, kind of exactly how I like it. We ordered some char siu and rice, and an order of siu mai. It was simple, non-elegant, and perfectly reasonable. It was certainly better than I thought it would be for its location in prime Chinatown. The char siu was decent, not as tender as others, I've had, but perfectly tasty nonetheless. That nuclear red color is always comforting to me. The siu mai was good too. Easy to eat, pretty large pieces, and seasoned well. Very serviceable restaurant if you're just wanting to wander around and eat somewhere in Chinatown! read more

came to chinatown and thought we'd hit the first dimsum place we found, expecting them to all be a level of decent. and so we walked right by and thought let's try it out. the location was clean and wasn't too busy, which was nice we also got most of our food pretty quickly as well. the rice porridge with century egg was probably my favorite dish. cooked very well, super savory, and the added texture of the ground pork and century egg was a nice complement. unfortunately the green beans were just way too salty. the har gow and rice rolls were also ok but had this dry leathery texture on the outside, as if it was sitting before being served. all this could've been overlooked had the price matched the experience, but it was pricey for what it was and more than we anticipated and the level of quality just wasn't there. read more

Great little Chinese Restaurant located in the heart of Chinatown!! We stumbled upon this little gem in the afternoon to grab a quick bite. Food was delicious and service was very quick and good. We ordered some dim sum dishes (har gow and shumai) that were still available in the afternoon. And of course chicken chow mein for the wifey. Everything came out fresh and piping hot. Service was excellent. The staff were all very friendly and attentive. They accept cards and Apple Pay; making it very easy and convenient to pay. The restroom was very well kept and clean. I'm not usually one to bash a business but I was very upset with our experience today. We came in with a baby for a quick lunch since we didn't want to wait in line next door at the restaurant we originally wanted to go to. Baby was crying and we were trying to get her to settle in for her nap. After we ordered we were asked by a staff to have one of us leave with the baby while the other one eat. While I was kind of surprised they asked us to do that, I understood that other customers may be uncomfortable with a baby crying (albeit we were seated all the way at the back and out of other patrons way). However after my husband walked outside with the baby and I was hurrying to finish my food, another staff came up to me and asked me how many people we were. I said 2 and she wanted me to move to a smaller table. I'm not sure why when I looked around and there were empty tables everywhere. I said that I'm almost done and that we also have a baby with a stroller and needed the space. After that I pretty much just ate as fast as I could and called my husband to bring the baby back so we can swap. What a horrible way to treat your customers. I don't think that we deserve special treatment just because we have a baby but at least a basic welcoming atmosphere so that we can have a quick lunch. Unfortunately, the food was just average. Despite being the only customers there, the waiter only came to our table to serve the dishes and never checked in on us. I've definitely had better Chinese food elsewhere. On the bright side, the prices here are lower compared to other spots--but that might reflect the quality you're getting. This time, we ordered sweet-and-sour chicken, Kung Pao chicken, broccolini, and pork fried rice. Everything was piping hot, super fresh, and absolutely delicious! While the customer service was just OK, the quality of the food more than made up for it. Every time I visit, I try something new from their extensive menu, and I've never been disappointed. Picked up goodies for home and (I think her name is) Elaine gave me free samples while waiting for the food. First she introduced this fried sticky ball with ground meat in it. She encouraged me by saying it is really good. I've never had it before and oh it was yummy that I ordered two sets. She gave me a slice of crispy pork after a customer bought a slab. Then as I was walking out she gave me a sesame ball. She told me not to make myself hungry waiting for my son who was taking his SAT that morning a few blocks away. Their pork buns one of our favorites. I ordered the usual dim sum items and congee. It was truly a special visit. The place was super busy but orderly. Every customer said good bye to her. Service is good, for a Chinese restaurant. Ambiance is typical as the dinning room also doubles as low key storage. As for the food, we thought given its location in Chinatown, it should be automatically good. But we were frankly slightly disappointed. The Peking duck was quite dry and when we ask how more to get 4 more small buns (4 comes with the dish), we were quoted $8! The final sticker shock came when they added a default 15% gratuity to the bill (we were a party of 4). We thought this should have been disclosed upfront (even in small or sloppy handwritten fonts). We did a postmortem of why the food fell short of our modest expectations and I believe it's because of its specific location within Chinatown . It's located closer to the various souvenir shops which means it's probably catering more towards the tourists. If it were located closer to the authentic meat and vegetables shops where locals go to shop, maybe it would've been a different story. read more

It was good dim sum in a very small restaurant. The employees were very busy rushing from table to table with little streamer baskets and the food was hot and prompt. We did order three different shrimp dumplings and they all tasted different and even the shrimp had different textures to it. All very good food and perfect size for dim sum They never asked if we wanted more food after the initial order, or offered soy sauce or more tea to us. When I asked for the sizzling beef, the senior woman with the very short dark gray haircut abruptly corrected me and said, "It's called sizzling beef." I nervously laughed and repeated it the way she said it. She then proceeded to run her mouth, yelling across the restaurant, to another employee, while i was still ordering and had the another employee finish taking our order. Like what????? As we were sitting down for dine-in, she stops by our table then asked how many people were dining in, and we stated said two. Shortly afterwords, she comes back, with ANOTHER white couple trying to SEAT them where we were sitting and told us to get up, we needed to take our food to go instead of having it plated like everyone else. When we asked why our food couldn't be served the same way as the other customers, another employee with short hair brought out tiny plates and told us we could plate the food ourselves. Our go-to dim sum place whenever in Chinatown, SF. There's usually a nice lady handing out flyers for this palace outside on the corner. Good service, fresh food. Love their chili oil, it has a good flavor to it. I always get the pork shu mai, shrimp har gow, chicken feet, and egg custard tarts if they have it. There is only one restroom that's often occupied and it is a bit smelly and we've seen sketchy, non-patron ppl come into the restaurant to use it in a few occasions but it's SF, it happens. read more

The shrimp har gow and pork siu mai were solid - fresh, hot, and came out pretty fast.
