If there is one type of restaurant I love is a good diner! Settled in a small strip center in Bartow, the Broadway Diner was a suggestion of my BFF and his cousin. Richard was coming to Bartow to meet up with his cousin and do some antiquing. It was Sunday after church and none of us were on a schedule. We were told the wait was 10 minutes. We were seated in 15. Again, no schedule as I caught up with my BFF and got to know his cousin. We were seated and Cindy, our server immediately took our drink order. Simple waters, iced tea and coffee. The restaurant was busy and Cindy disappeared after our drink order was delivered. No worries, the conversation kept us busy and we wanted to take in the place. Our orders were taken; I had the Ruben, BFF had the skillet, and the cuz had a patty melt. I couldn't tell you how long as we were so enthralled in conversation. Both sammies were served with fries and cole slaw. I was so psyched upon the food arrival. The bread on my Ruben was crunchy, perfect amount of corned beef, sauerkraut, and 1000 island dressing, I devoured it! The crinkled fries were crispy and when I asked for honey mustard for dipping, it was brought out immediately! The patty melt looked equally amazing as did the skillet. I was told the biscuit my BFF ordered was fresh and tasted homemade. He could have eaten 5 more. When I write reviews, I am not in a rush. I am more about the experience than Cindy or any server trying to turn a table. Outside of hanging with my BFF and his cousin, it was so worth the 30+ mile drive! I visited yesterday for lunch and tried the Meatloaf which, according to the menu, appeared to be one of the restaurant's specialties. The food was average. The meatloaf was light on flavor except for a hint of onion but had a nice soft texture and was topped with creamy gravy. The sides of mashed potatoes and coleslaw were ok. This was our first time into the Broadway Diner. I had the turkey club and my daughter had the chicken and waffles. The turkey club was really good. The veggies were really fresh and the fries were great! My daughter loved the chicken and waffles too. The chicken on top of the waffles were chicken tenders and looked like they were frozen. I think it would have been better if they had put a piece of their homemade fried chicken on top since it looked really good. The server was very friendly and attentive. We came by on Sunday 3/8 for a late breakfast and early lunch before they closed. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, I think her name was Janietta. We had water and tea ($2.35). The owner was also mingling amongst the tables. We had the Country Benendict ($7.29) and the Broadway Burger ($9.49) . The Country Benedict was good with one biscuit cut in half with egg and sausage on each with sausage on all. The Broadway Burger was also good but the crinkle fries not so much. Between the "crispy home fries" which were raw in the middle, the chicken fried steak that's tough and bland or the worse of it the "sausage gravy" that tastes only as it was made of flour. Definitely hate spending $15 on a meal that's this breakfast. When every chain restaurant within a mile has you beat by far it's time to rethink the breakfast chef or the canned food you sever. I really don't get the other reviews here. Broadway Diner is not as good as some say it is nor is it as bad as others say it is. It's a decent sort of place with decent food. My mistake as ordering a Cuban sandwich. It was good. You have to understand that for the past year I've only eaten Cuban Sandwiches from Rumba Cafe in Naples. They may be the best in the world. Incredible. It's not fair to compare anyone to Rumba Cafe. The Cuban here is better than what you get at your local Public store if you want a realistic comparison. Not a lot better. Just better. The french fries though need a serious upgrade.These fries might have been acceptable 5 years ago but not today. They came out of a frozen bag. They were your basic industrial cut french fry that you had as a kid. We've gone way beyond that today. I want hand cut unfrozen fries. The owner needs to stop at Five Guys some day this week and taste a real French fry. I liked my dinner but it was nothing to get excited about. Then again I'm in Bartow. There aren't a lot of choices. I'm not sure I could have done better and I have done worse here. Just serve real french fries though. Please. read more
