The Broadway diner has attentive service, clean tables and plenty of choices on the menu. However, the staple meatloaf was dry, texture was mealy and zero of the unctuous flavor that we all expect from diners. The whipped potatoes were too wet and thin. Burgers were overcooked and everything was under seasoned. I'll give it two stars because I didn't find bugs or mold in my food, but the food is disappointing. My burger was flavorless and dry, and the toppings were not fresh. I'm not sure if they even added the sauce that was meant to go on the burger, but if they did, it did not do its job. I like that they substitute regular fries with waffle fries by default, and the waffle fries were definitely pretty good-- they were seasoned like a waffle or curly fry should be, and tasted pretty fresh. The pancakes really are all they're cracked up to be. The service can be hit or miss, especially on a busy weekend morning / early afternoon. They're very child-friendly and have "Mickey Pancakes" which are always a hit. In the fall months, they have pumpkin pancakes that are to die for. Honestly I haven't tried much else on the menu, and we've been coming here for years. It's definitely our "go-to" for pancakes though. Parking can be a bit of a debacle, but we always find something. I've visited this location twice once I got a bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. The breakfast sandwich was good but it did not have enough egg. The other time i dinned in. Service was fine, I did not like the quality of my French toast. It tasted very bland, I didn't taste how French toast is supposed to;it tastes like toasted bread lacking in flavor. Will Treat You Right Even During Late Night So our first visit here was serendipitous. We were driving back to Morris Plains from Newark International Airport (EWR) and were running low on gas. We spent 30+ minutes driving around Summit looking for a gas station that was open at 1 in the morning to no avail. While we were on fumes and arriving at yet another closed gas station (Raceway) we spotted Broadway Diner just across the street and noticed it was open 24/7. We stepped in and felt like we were rescued as we were able to order the "best pancakes in the world" (read as pretty damn good after 10+ hours of travel) and found out that we were less than a mile to a 24/7 gas station. Since the signage says "best pancakes in the world" we figured we try the pancakes and I'm glad we did. Our son ordered some M&M pancakes that came out in the shape of Micky Mouse which he loved. I ordered the Cranberry Pecan Pancakes and they were pretty damn good. The pecans had a bit of a smokey flavor from the cooking process that blended nicely with the sweetness of the cranberries. My wife also enjoyed her pancakes and we all were thankful to be inside a warm restaurant when it was in the 30s outside. We've gone back again just for the pancakes recently and still enjoyed them even though we didn't just finish the brunt of a 10 hour journey. The service was also still quick and attentive. When a cup of coffee was ordered, the waiter brought out an entire carafe of coffee just for a single order. That's pro status right there. The decor of the place will keep you amused as they have an eclectic collection of dinner and bar items to keep you finding new things as you wait for your order to arrive. You may actually find that you keep looking around during and after your meal as well. If you have some late night munchies or just want to find a good place for breakfast I'd suggest you give Broadway Diner in Summit a try. read more

This is the 2nd worst diner ever. The pancakes are rubber. Are these things pre-made? I was supposed to have smoked salmon in my omelet. I got dry, cooked salmon that was so salty it was inedible. The omelette was terrible. The hash browns had a strange taste and smell. I'm still waiting on utensils. I love coconut fried shrimp. Here, they take frozen shrimp and roll them in coconut but do not fry it to a golden crisp. It's like some kind of nightmare you'd make in a high school home ec class. The greatest benefit to going to Broadway Diner is the fact it is open 24/7. If I want to do something super late, I can drive to Broadway and get myself something to eat. Foodwise, Broadway tends to be very haphazard in terms of quality. I find the best things they do are usually breakfast foods. While I would say the pancakes are far from the world's best, they are quite good in a pinch. Eggs tend to be ok but it is really hard to mess up cooking eggs. The other thing on the menu I like to get are the shakes, which are nice. You get a lot of shake and it does not come out syrupy most of the time. When ordering outside of breakfast foods, Broadway strikes out a bit. The best thing I had at Broadway outside of the breakfast menu is the French Dip, which they make decently. I have certainly had better, but it is serviceable. The disco fries at Broadway are a disappointment and a half, but I usually end up getting them for the table. The burgers are dry and bland when I ordered one Medium Rare. The service is haphazard as well. The guy at the front is super nice, but the servers are dicey. Sometimes I get a server that is an Angel, but sometimes I get someone who is completely inept. My most recent visit to Broadway was easily one of my worst. We went around 9:30 ish. I ordered disco fries for the table and an eggs breakfast for myself. The disco fries were burnt on the top, clearly left under a heater way too long. My Taylor ham was burnt was well, making the edges of it inedible. My hash browns were over cooked as well. My eggs were serviceable as usual. Server was a 4/10 in quality, on the low end of mediocre. I want to like broadway diner, but in a competitive area for diners and the prices not being amazing, the only clear bonus is the late hours. If you need diner food in a pinch it is ok. You will get mediocre food in a decent looking restaurant for a not so decent price. Update: My past few experiences have redeemed Broadway. Went to this place a few times with my fiancé. First time, not so bad. Second time, the waitress had a bit of a snippy attitude. Then... We went on Sunday (06/25) for some lunch. The waiter came to our table ONCE to take our order. The food was taken to our table by someone else. Not once did the waiter check up on us, ask if we wanted more water. He walked right by our table numerous times and didn't acknowledge us after taking our order. Apparently it was more important to flirt with the girls than to take care of the rest of his tables. A friend recently described Broadway to me as "The World's Most Mediocre Diner" and I can't think of a better description than that. Years ago, I had not one, but two instances of receiving appetizers that weren't fried long enough and were cold/frozen in the middle. Thankfully, that hasn't happened since, though that isn't to say Broadway has had a massive improvement since then. At this point I basically only get grilled cheese and waffle fries there because those two things are pretty good and I'm afraid to try anything else because of the aforementioned incidents with the appetizers. There are way better diners in the area. Go to the Prestige or Summit Diner or something. Pretty much the only reason to go here is because they're one of the very few 24 hour restaurants in this area. I'll be honest here, this spot is a little weird. So when you arrive there is a huge sign that says "worlds greatest pancakes" or something like that. They have a bunch of tables outside in the lot and a bunch inside. It was too cold to sit outside so we asked for indoors. They obviously are exaggerating when they claim to have the world's best pancakes, but they are pretty good. The ones I had were fluffy and had decent flavor. The Harvest Apple ones are good and loaded with fresh apples. As others have mentioned the syrup is incredibly thick and not good quality. You can pay extra for real maple syrup which I recommend, since that fake stuff can ruin the pancakes. The eggplant is fresh and delicious. I recommend the Grilled Eggplant Panini which has roasted red peppers and melted mozzerella. Excellent. The Chicken Parm Sandwhich was bad though with tough chicken and breading that was burnt to the point of being black in spots. So I've driven past this diner for over a year now and I knew that someday I would just have to come in and experience the claimed "World's Best Pancakes". I had been putting it off for a while, but I finally caved and stopped in a week ago and I have to say, they were some of the worst pancakes I've ever had. I tried the cinnamon pancakes with some coffee and while the pancakes were hot and came out quickly, that doesn't offset the fact that they were undercooked and still a little batter-y for my taste. They also tasted like cardboard and I haven't figured out how that can be, even after being drenched with butter and syrup. The coffee, not wanting to be left out, was very bland and tasteless even after multiple creamers and sugar (and this is a guy who's used to drinking Folgers at work). The service was fine, but that doesn't make up for terrible food. I would not recommend this place to anyone and there are much better diners in the area. World's Best Pancakes? Opting not to spend a stupid amount of money on our hotel's brunch, we asked the concierge to recommend a destination for us. It shocks me that the Hilton Short Hillls directs its customers to this type of place, but hey, they serve eggs benedict and endless cups of coffee. Extremely disappointed in this Diner! Misleading Menu This morning I went to the diner for breakfast expecting a breakfast of around $10 before tip. I ordered coffee and the breakfast sandwich "Breakfast on a Bagel". The menu reads "Scrambled Eggs, Cheese, and Home Fries with Ham, Bacon, Taylor Ham or Sausage" for $7.45 Upon receiving my food, I asked where was the home fries and was advised that it did not come with it. Thinking it was my error I asked for a side of home fries. Upon finishing my meal the check was brought over, I did not look at it until I was at the counter to pay and it was $15.09. I inquired with the cashier if the Breakfast on a Bagel came with home fries and was again advised no. At this point the manager came over and reviewed the ticket, he proceeded to say it was likely a misunderstanding but that the item I ordered did not come with home fries and actually showed me on the computer screen the different ways it could have been rang up on the system. I paid and went to my car and pulled up the menu and sure enough the menu reads "Scrambled Eggs, Cheese, and Home Fries with Ham, Bacon, Taylor Ham or Sausage". I proceed to go back inside and ask to see the menu and point out to the cashier and manager that the menu states that my item ordered has home fries, the manager advised me that he had already spoke with the server and that the Breakfast on a Bagel does come with a scope of home fries but not a side of home fries. I advised I never even got the scope of fries on the side or on my bagel and that was the reason I ordered a side of home fries. I am not one to complain about little things, yet charging over 50% more then the menu list and not refunding the difference and to top it all off through the entire process from the staff or manager there was zero empathy. How can you f*ck up diner food? I mean it's really not a difficult concept. This place ranks as one of the worst diners around (and in Jersey there a ton). Service is the saving grace but overall the food sucks! I ordered a burger wrap (think McSnack Wrap McDonald's). I asked for it to be medium. Came out nearly burnt with the cheese not even melted, how is that even possible. I was better off going to McDonald's where I would have enjoyed my meal even more! The Broadway Diner is the quintessential diner. It has a huge menu filled with reliably tasty comfort food. I don't think I've had anything besides breakfast here but I've had breakfast in the morning, at lunchtime, dinner, and late evening. The sandwiches are huge, the burgers look fabulous and the portions are enormous. They are known for their pancakes for good reason. Try them!!! My server, Ines, was a dream! Ines greeted me promptly, was friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, took initiative, and made my dining experience that much better. It was quiet when I arrived and ordered coffee. Took about 30 minutes to fix it. Today, my toast was not delivered with eggs (I only eat eggs with toast) and after waiting 5 minutes and not receiving I got up to ask server.
