Finally tried Brodo after it spent years languishing in my bookmarks. I enjoyed it! I tried the 10 oz chicken broth with the Tuscan Sun add-on (rosemary oil, roasted garlic, lemon) and my friend tried the hearth broth with the Tom Yum (coconut milk, curry, Calabrian chili, lime). I'd give a slight edge to the Tuscan Sun: The rosemary added an aromatic herbaceousness, the garlic and broth added umami, and the soup had just the right amount of salt. I also loved the design of the to-go cup! On a Saturday afternoon in November, there was one person in line ahead of us and one waiting for an order. Service was a bit slow, which was okay given the amount of people. This shop has a to-go window only; there is no indoor or indoor outdoor seating. read more

This was my first time here and I was eager to try a soup. I opted for the spicy pumpkin soup because I get a lot of squash from my CSA. The soup was $12 and they would / could not give me a tiny sample to taste. I thought the price was high, but I was willing to try it, and indeed, the price was high....too high...for a quite ordinary pumpkin soup that was ok and definitely not too salty, but really nothing special. This place was strongly recommended by my friendly pharmacist, Dr. Ali, whose pharmacy is close to Brodo, and whose recommendation was part of his prescription for me to heal from my respiratory infection. I have passed by this place many times. As a vegetarian, I can't have the bone broth but let me get their vegetarian special which was parmesan cream and leek. I asked for fresh ginger as recommended. For this cup, I paid around $10. The gal was not friendly and I literally saw her assemble it: hot water broth powder leek parmesan sauce She did not put the fresh ginger and immediately closes the separator window. For some reason, it rubs me off the wrong way. There is no thank you from her part and the tablet register expects one to tip 20% or more for this subpar performance. When I arrived home, I anticipated a one of a kind experience. What I had was a very lackluster soup that lacked the flavor, taste, or any culinary art. At least for the vegetarian option. It is not worth the $10 and I regret not going to Mee's for very satisfying Chinese food at the same price. I know friends who are hooked by the Brodo and they must get the bone one which I assume is tastier. They told me that they cancelled the order and refunded my account. After over one month of promises, my bank confirmed, the refund was never received. I have emails trails of these promises. There are five broths; Chicken, beef, hearth, seaweed + mushroom, and The kind gentlemen spared several minutes to give me a sample of each broth! I went with the Seaweed Mushroom and Chicken broth with no add-ons. Simply delicious and homey feeling; sorta like having your grandma's soup. There are plenty of reviews here that say it is too salty or rich but if you grew up in an Asian household like I was, this would be far from the truth. Brodo's broth is everything you need for a cold winter day in NYC. The have a vast array of health broths made right in the kitchen which you can see from the window which you order from. It is a pretty cool view to see them working while you order. I got the beef broth with the garlic purée. It comes in a coffee cup and with every sip is filled with tremendous flavor. I don't really know how to rate a walk up window that serves hot cups of broth. There's no other place like it, and it's kinda weird drinking an entire cup of the meaty stuff. There aren't many options, and I don't see myself returning here to replace a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, but it does taste really good though, so I guess 4 stars seems reasonable. There are three types of broth to choose from: Beef, Chicken and Hearth, which is a combination of beef, chicken and turkey. I got a small cup of the Hearth ($4), and it was incredibly flavorful. It was really meaty and tasted like it could probably fill you up if you had a big enough cup. There are also three types of soup on the menu: Beef & Winter Vegetable, Ribolitta and Chickarina ($7 for a small). Unfortunately I just missed the chance to try one as they stopped serving them right when I arrived. Marco Canora, the owner of Hearth next door, was running the window and was super nice and enthusiastic about everything. So real, that I got sucked in to trying this Hearth-adjacent window in the LES on a chilly evening to see what the magical elixir was all about. I walked up to the window (no line yet, phew) and ordered a small Hearth broth, which sounded the savoriest. It was a little under $5, so a bit more than a latte but about on par with a cup of fancy hot cocoa. While I'm certain you can make this ish on your own with some leftover chicken bones, for a warm treat on a 20-degree day, it's worth it. Warning though, it's super hot when you first get it! This is a great concept. I love it. Sometimes you want something warm to drink but you don't want tea and you don't want coffee....this is perfect for those occasions. Came here on our last day, as a last stop before we returned to our VRBO rented apartment in Brooklyn. We had found out about this place prior to our trip and had been wanting to try it. Came across it on the way to lunch in East Village coming off the L train. Interestingly they run out of a window and is purely To-Go only. We had originally all wanted the Hearth, but for sheer variety and to try different broths, we each got a different one. Hearth Broth ($6.25 for 10oz, $9.50 for 16oz, $17.75 for 32oz frozen) is made with whole stewing hens, turkey legs, beef shin, chicken feet, water, onions, carrot, celery, whole tomato, parsley, sea salt, black pepper, bay leaf BBC ($8.25 for 10oz, $12.00 for 16oz) is a bone broth combination made with beef broth, bone marrow, chili Spicy Nonna $7.25 for 10oz, $10.50 for 16oz) is a bone broth combination made with Hearth broth, garlic, ginger Quick note. Despite the broths being organic, natural, whatever. Meat has natural oils. Natural oils and fats mean, you have a thick layer of oil on top of your broth. With some combinations having chili, it is not just chili, its chili oil. So beware. Lol I personally had the BBC. Beef broth (100% grass-fed beef bones, water, onions, carrot, celery, tomato paste, fresh pressed ginger, thyme, parsley, sea salt, black pepper, bay leaf) with bone marrow and chili. As mentioned earlier, yes there's oil. Be careful when drinking. Also, 10 oz is generally enough. When ordering, i had contemplated in ordering a 16 oz but decided against it, just in case the broth was too heavy and what not. It was a nice broth. Not too flavorful but nice. Each soup has it own uniqueness. The BBC made me feel like i wish i had some rice noodles to eat with the soup. They all do warm you from the inside and gets you nice and hot. I am oddly obsessed with Brodo. After trying several varieties (at similar restaurants and from the supermarket), I can say with confidence that Brodo is the most flavorful. But maybe that's also why it's the most expensive. The quality ingredients and taste are worth the price! Each Brodo blend has a distinct flavor. The meat based broths have at least 8g of protein per cup, so this flavorful beverage also packs a filling punch. My favorites include: - A cup of the chicken broth with the Sunday roast add-in. This add-in includes rosemary, garlic, and lemon. This is basically like drinking a roast chicken! - The chicken or hearth broth with oishi oishi mixed in. That's lots of mushrooms, garlic, and butter. Brodo also has cold blended broth drinks (I haven't tried these) and often features a signature broth blend from a guest chef. Today I tried the special which was a seaweed and mushroom broth, miso, shiso, ginger, and salt. It was the perfect treat for a misty day. I went and got the grass-fed broth and boy is it tasty. I think people are going to have to stop using the cliché "hot cocoa" and start getting this amazing broth to warm up when this frigid weather finally rolls through. On our last day in NYC, my friends and I decided to try Brodo! Brodo has been on my list ever since my friend recommended it to me during our last trip but we never seem to be able to try it until now! Brodo runs out of a window. It's quite the interesting concept. So their soups are only to-go. No sit down service. No waiter at your feet. So the whole process is fairly fast. You order a soup, they get your soup in a coffee/tea to-go cup, and then you pay. As for their broths, they have a ton of different ones with either a chicken base, beef base, or turkey base. And there are ones where they mix them. They also have interesting mixes too that include chili oil and what not. I decided to go for their most popular broth, which is the Hearth broth. It has whole stewing hens, turkey legs, beef shin, chicken feet, water, onions, carrot, celery, whole tomato, parsley, sea salt, black pepper, and bay leaf. I also decided to add some garlic puree in there since a lot of reviews say it's really good that way. The broth is very HOT so when you get it so be careful! You can burn your tongue! I also noticed that there is a layer of oil on top of the broth when you get it .. I'm not sure if that was a result in the garlic puree or not. However, because there's a layer of oil on top, it does a good job at keeping the broth warm. The broth itself is very thin and light in flavor. It's still very good, especially on a cold day. It would have been perfect for winter! The only thing about Brodo is that it's pretty pricey for what you're getting. With one single add on, it cost about $7 for the smallest cup they have. Also, adding the garlic puree, you will get hit with a huge taste of garlic. If I do get Brodo the next time I'm in NYC, I will most likely skip the garlic. If you've got a cold or are feeling under the weather, Brodo's got your back. I swung by here during my lunch break to grab a cuppa (broth) after seeing the great reviews on Yelp. I was pleased to see that they are open until 9PM most days, which means that I can pick up a nice hot mug of chicken broth on a cold winter day. The menu is pretty straightforward - choose your broth, pick you size, add in some extras if you so choose, or select one of the premade combinations. I went for two 10oz cups as it was my first time and I wanted to see the difference between them. I ordered the chicken broth with calabrian chili oil and the seaweed + mushroom broth (vegetarian and vegan-friendly), which came to around $12 total. Definitely a bit pricey when you consider the fact that you're getting broth, but I didn't think that this was enough to remove a star from my review. You're going to a specialty broth shop - $6 for a cup isn't that crazy. The seaweed and mushroom broth was thick, rich, and warm - it tasted sort of like a mushroom and barley soup if you removed all of the mushroom and barley. I had to take out the brown film that they use to cover the broth; a nice touch if you're planning on bringing this with you on the subway or commute home. The chicken broth, on the other hand, was something else. Rich, warm, hearty, and with a bit of a kick due to the chili oil, I saved that for after I finished the seaweed broth because it was so damn delicious. I'd highly recommend Brodo if you're looking for a pick me up on a cold fall or winter day, or even if you're feeling a bit sick. Sure it seems like something straight out of Portlandia, but boy is this broth delicious. I've been known to heat up water and throw a bullion cube inside for a hot, salty, and meaty little treat in my day... so learning of a broth bar opening up 1/2 block from my apartment was quite the fun little discovery. It's essentially a pop up window on the 1st Avenue side of Hearth in East Village, and so far with my first taste of their Hearth Broth (combination of chicken, turkey, and beef sipping broths), it's going to be a regular stop of mine throughout fall and winter. They seem to be in soft opening mode currently as their menu isn't 100% available (they have some actual soups to go along with their sipping broths), but I can't imagine it'll be too long before they're fully operational and lines form as the cold descends on the city. In addition to the signature Hearth Broth, they have a straight chicken broth and a grass fed beef broth. I didn't see a vegetarian option on their menu, but depending on your dietary preferences that may or may not be an issue for you at all. Excited to see how the concept fares! A year ago I would have given 5 stars. Brodo's mushroom seaweed broth has been my go to for a long time. But, the last two times I bought this broth from them it had no flavor. It was just like brown water. I had to add bouillon. I went back this last time thinking that my previous experience was surely an anomaly. Well...stupid me. $20 bucks down the drain - TWICE. I wrote to them and never got a reply. Such a bummer. At their prices, these broths should be nothing but exceptional. Time to learn how to make my own! read more
