Broken Smoker - Beef brisket, half rack ribs, baked beans and coleslaw - Barbeque Near Me - Middleville, Michigan

We ordered takeout. This was our first time eating from Broken Smoker. When I called in the order I was told the sauces were on the side, We ordered 3 entrees and 3 different sauces. When my roommate brought the order home, there were no sauces. There were plenty of fries, but the side of smoked beans came in a small condiment cup, They had a good flavor, but there could have been more for the price. I've had better cornbread out of a Jiffy box. The meat tasted like they got it from a forest fire. Oak might be the cheapest wood they could find, but apple or cherry would give the meat a better flavor. At least they didn't use oleander. My chicken was tender, the dark meat was moist and the white meat was very dry. Typical of slow-smoked chicken with no sauce. My roommates baby back ribs were very dry and about 30% burnt jerky. All in all, it wasn't worth the price and I won't go back, nor will I recommend them to anybody. I forgot to mention, The ribs didn't look anything like the picture. If you do decide to try Broken Smoker make sure you have plenty of ketchup on hand. read more

I had the Gambler sandwich which was outstanding. They have 4 unique bbq sauces which there should be at least one that you will love. I thought the fries were very good also. I had no sides so can't comment about them. Service was friendly and fast. Well kept place also. I hope they do well. The little town of Middleville needs to keep a place like this. read more

This place was amazing in all areas. Very simple restaurant with wood benches. My favorite was the fried pickles. So much seasoning packed on such a thin batter. The brisket was mouthwatering along with their house made bbq sauces. The ex wife bbq sauce is definitely spicy, but makes the sweet and spicy one even better. Mac n cheese lacked a little, but after a little salt and pepper it was perfect. Now the customer service is what will bring us back, not just the food. Two waitresses stopped to explain the menu and were super friendly. Our main waitress came to our table every few minutes to make sure we were good and fill drinks as needed. For all the veterans and military out there, you'll like this part. They have fallen comrade table set up in the front. I've never seen that anywhere except at military functions or chow halls. After that, I fully decided that I will do my part to support this business every chance I get! read more

The smoke was not bad for three value. I think the decor could do better as this felt like a cheap restaurant with old lightning. I'd love to see them invest in the property a bit more. Fried pickles were the best. read more

Went in for the first time today and I have to say I'm not impressed even in the least bit. Mediocre at best. Soggy bland fries and idk about the rest it was all "sold out". They didn't tell us till we ordered they where out of brisket, and ribs so we ordered something else, then after they tell us they don't have buns for the sandwich. It took 20 mins just to get two corndogs and some fries . Oh and btw, they had buns.... they just said the didn't, we could see unopened bags of them from our seat and other customers got them after us. Probably won't go again. read more

Good food and good service. I had sausage and pulled pork the first visit and chicken today. All excellent. The beans were very good. The hush puppies were good also. The service was excellent but then I was the only one there midday today. Like one other poster mentioned the interior is pretty bland but nothing a few Frederic Remington paintings couldn't fix. read more

First time here for dinner tonight. The brisket, pulled pork, and chicken were very tasty! The pickle chips were too thin and salty. The pork rolls were flavorful but too greasy. The collard greens, coleslaw, Mac and cheese were lacking on flavor too. The cornbread was very dry and also didn't have much flavor. The service was so-so, and I honestly don't feel like I got my money's worth as my bill with a tip was well over a $100. For starters it took us four tries to even be able to eat at this restaurant due to not being open during posted hours. We had high hopes as all the reviews were really good. When we got inside we found out the only choice for seating is picnic tables, cute and creative, but not comfortable. We both ordered sandwiches mine was so soggy the bread broke and everything fell apart. The flavor was decent, but half my sandwich was fat and not edible. My fries were way under cooked and not edible. The service on the other hand was great. We were waited on quickly and politely. The service time in the food also was great. We may give it another try down the road, but will not be in any hurry. read more

Ordered 4 sandwiches to go. When I walked in for pick up the sign inside said " No ribs, sausage or burgers. I can understand being out of ribs but no Burger's?? How can you run out of burger?? Needless to say I ordered the "Gambler" it should have Brisket, Sausage, Pork and Mac and Cheese on the sandwich. I did not see any Brisket and there was no Sausage at all. It would have been nice if they would have informed me that they ran out of some of the items on the sandwich. Instead they put it in the bag and sent me on my way. The rest was ok. I couldn't decide between two or three stars (based off descriptions). Service: I'd give service 5 stars. We were one of two tables in the actual building so that may have given more time for us than usual. Still, dinner time (6:00?) on a Monday in Middleville which ever Riverdog was slow. Our waitress was very friendly and always available which was great. She was very familiar with the individual menu items and sauces available. Menu: The menu was super basic. They offer the typical Brisket/Pork/Chicken. They also had a small selection of sandwiches. What was lacking was sides and vegetables. They had smoked green beans but that was the only option. No kids menu, which isnt typically an issue with this kind of place as meat entrees are very easy to share. Just wish there was more veggies/fruit or some sort of addition other than just more meat. My wife, young daughter and myself shared the 2 meat combo for $21.99. I think this is pretty average price in the GR area for that type of combo. We also ordered my daughter an extra side of Mac and Cheese. I don't really recommend for a kid in the end as it does have a kick to it. Taste: Bland. Pulled Pork - This was probably my favorite of the entire plate. Not much taste to it, but very moist and tender. Adding a sauce made it decent. Brisket - too dry and bland. You had to scoop it up with a fork as stabbing it would just make it crumble. Mac and Cheese - also bland. There was not any form of cheese flavor. just a noodle taste surrounded by a flavorless sauce with an occasional spice/kick. Cornbread - Most of the cornbread was super hard. The middle half was nice and moist as cornbread should be with good flavor, but about 1/2" around all of the outside was just hard and crusty. Sauces: There were 4 options including two tomato based/traditional, one vinegar based and one mustard based/Carolina sauce. All of these appeared to be made in house. Im not a big mustard guy but it tasted pretty similar to other carolina sauces. My wife was loving the vinegar based one and I enjoyed the two tomato based. Overall, a little disappointed. For the cost, which again was very reasonable, I'd prefer to go somewhere with more menu options/flavor. I love the fact that its locally owned which will probably bring me back in at some point. The server did recommend a grilled cheese with pulled pork in it. I may give that a try some time. read more

Wish 4.5 stars was an option. We ordered the three meat platter and it was close to outstanding. I will start with the good and finish with the not as good for each item. Ribs - served without sauce on them and were not fall off the bone which is exactly the way ribs should be. The bite was spot on with some nice smoky flavor. A touch light on both seasoning and smoke ring kept them from being 5 stars. I know it is a pit master's preference but think removing the silver skin would also be a positive. Brisket - tender & juicy with a great color, some of the better brisket I have had in the GR area. Just a touch under seasoned, shy on smoke ring, and very slightly over cooked as it lacked the "pull" or elasticity brisket should have. One of the three pieces we got was considerably thicker than the other two but was still moist and tender. Pulled Pork - tender and juicy with a nice bark, just wish I got a little more with our portion. I admit I am the type who likes a lot of bark but even she wanted more bark. Hard to really count lack of bark as a serious negative. We used just a touch of the Outhouse sauce which is excellent. Mac & cheese side - pasta was cooked well but choice of small elbow macaroni, no topping, and no other ingredients made it very average. I don't mean this in a snide way but I think anyone under the age of 12 would think it was perfect. Baked beans - I could see where these may be too sweet for some but they reminded me of the baked beans I grew up on. Cooked very well with outstanding color, texture, and flavor. 5 star if you like sweeter baked beans! read more

By far, the best smoked meat I've ever had. I've tried them all, not just locally, but around the country, and this is the first time I've been amazed. I've only been there twice. The first visit I had a brisket sandwich and my wife had her go-to pulled pork sandwich. The brisket was phenomenal. Very smokey, moist and tender while void of being fatty. My wife gave a thumbs up to the pork for the same reasons. We went back several days later and had an equally great meal. This time I had the baby back ribs and she had her usual pulled pork. The ribs were beyond my expectation. Great bark, huge smoke, fall off the bone tender and still moist. She was equally happy with her usual. The only minor problem was that they were out of collard greens that I ordered for a side dish. And, there bbq sauces were not all that they could be. Both the Eastern Carolina mustard sauce and the Western Carolina vinegar sauce were excellent, but there Memphis and Outhouse sauces (the traditional types) were not up to the test. I'm a cynical person, not often pleased, but this place deserves praise. I find it ironic that what I thought to be the best Mexican restaurant, ever, was the prior occupant of this site...now replaced by this awesome Q. Also, no alcohol at this time (9/15/18). read more
