Chicken wings, bbq beans, corn and cornbread. Chicken wings, slaw and sweet potato tots.

MLK DAY: Free meal to celebrate Dr. King's birthday! Chicken wings, bbq beans, corn and cornbread. Chicken wings, slaw and sweet potato tots. Food was good. Loved the sweet potatoes tots! I'm coming back for the chicken pot pie another day. Generous portions (I only plated what I was eating in the photo). Staff was so friendly! The cooks did a FB video and they greeted us when we came in with their big beautiful smile. You gotta love them for giving back to their community during a pandemic and harsh political climate. Building community as MLK preached. They are the embodiment of good business and wonderful people. God Bless!

Candied yams, black eyed peas and collard greens - after I have eaten like half of everything! Portions are huge!

My husband loved his fried catfish sandwich and fried pickles! I appreciated that they poked holes in the fried pickles box so they wouldn't get soggy - they were still crispy and crunchy when we got home. My son loved the macaroni and cheese and cornbread muffin. I got the Veggie Plate option and a side of green beans - more food than I needed to be honest but I wanted to try everything! My husband kept stealing the green beans because they were so good and he even ate the candied yams even though he usually doesn't like them.

    Meatloaf and greens.

So. Yum. Finally made it in and I'm so glad I did. Comfort food like you crave. The place was super clean and service was great. I got the meatloaf and greens. My hubby got fried chicken, Mac and cheese and green beans. It was all amazing. Portions were very large, I couldn't even finish. The cornbread was super yummy. Do yourself a favor and stop in or call in for takeout. You won't be sorry.

This is serious food for the soul! The Candied Yam and their soul food is a really special find in Grand Rapids. The restaurant is adorable and deceptively large. It feels very fresh and modern, but warm and welcoming. I really wanted everything on the menu! The young woman who took our order was so charming. Her aunt is the cook - she told us proudly. And when she said, "Best you've ever had, baby", you knew she was telling the truth! It was difficult to pare down what to order. We ended up with the catfish and the pork chops. The fish was lightly dusted and fried to perfection. It wasn't tough or over battered, and you could still taste the fish! The chops were cut thin, but were tender, juicy and full of flavor. Some of the best we've ever had! Both were cooked perfectly! Between the two of us we had the corn muffins, macaroni and cheese, fried okra, mashed potatoes and gravy, and of course, the candied yams. Each and every one was absolutely delicious! However, it is the greens that I will dream about! I have eaten a lot of collard greens in my lifetime, and I think these might be the best! I have no idea what magic she performs on this vegetable, but it was absolutely heavenly. To top it off, we had to have some dessert. We had both the peach cobbler and the banana pudding. The peach cobbler was very good, but very, very sweet. The banana pudding, however, was such a blast from my childhood. It had fresh bananas, whipped cream, and vanilla wafers. Both my husband and I were nearly in tears with a rush of very good memories of grandmothers making this same delicious dessert! Such nostalgic perfection! We both also had the sweet tea, which was way too sweet for both of us. It does seem to be a northern thing to make food and drink much sweeter than they do in the South. However, it was great once we were able to water it down a wee bit. For the record, the portions are a really nice size. We ordered enough food for dinner for four people - or dinner and breakfast for two. I am looking forward to our leftovers!

At first I was hesitant because of the price, and it being biscuits, but they made me eat those words and more. It was like a large biscuit muffin top with jalapeño, cheese and honey glaze (I think) and it came with a white cheddar cheese sauce to dip it in that was outrageously delicious. For a guy who hates cheddar biscuits, I've got to say I'm blown away. My wife ordered the steak with fingerling potatoes and carrots. It was on the pricier side, but yet again well worth it. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the veggies were pretty good too. They had live music playing as well tonight. It was a jazzy kind of vibe and it didn't over power anyone talking or anything. The guy had some serious skill too. To top it off, we had some pretty killer service from everyone there. From the hostess taking our names, random servers walking around, and our fantastic server (I forget her name but she was blonde and worked upstairs and had a a really great attitude. The expo or food runner dropping our food off anticipated us possibly needing an extra plate and brought one without asking which was super awesome and ended up coming in handy ( I knew my wife wouldn't finish that steak alone) and she brought it without asking and was ready with a smile to get more. I used to be a GM (I hate when people use this saying but...) truly I know how hard it is to find good workers and the folks running it here seem to have it down. I come from a place where you have to drive 100 mi or more for average service. So seeing exceptional service is really almost too good to be true. I'd definitely stop in for a bite. It's worth every penny. We'll be back for dessert, they have seasonal crème brûlées!

I dined at TOG today for a business lunch and, unfortunately, my experience was very disappointing…read more At the end of our meal, I asked for a to-go box because I had barely touched my food. My guest and I spent most of our lunch talking, and I left with nearly an entire meal. About 20 minutes after leaving, I realized I had forgotten my box and immediately called the restaurant to see if it was still there. The young lady who answered the phone asked where I had been seated. I explained that I was at the very first table at the front of the restaurant. Within seconds, she told me there was nothing there. Her tone made it clear that assisting me was not a priority. Given that the hostess stand is located at the back of the restaurant and I was seated at the front, I do not believe there was enough time for her to actually check before dismissing my concern. After I sent an email regarding the situation, the hostess responded that she had walked through the restaurant looking for the box. Based on the timing of our phone conversation, I find that difficult to believe. In her response, she also stated that she checked with the servers after our call had ended, which suggests that no real effort was made while I was on the phone. What is most disappointing is that I am a regular customer. Today, I paid $56.00 for lunch for myself and my business guest. Between a server who was largely absent throughout the meal and the dismissive interaction when I called about my forgotten food, the level of service fell far below what I have come to expect. Everyone has an occasional bad day, but customer service is often defined by how issues are handled after something goes wrong. In this case, I felt dismissed rather than helped. Unfortunately, after today's experience, I do not plan to return.

The menu is full of classic Southern comfort food, like fried chicken, meatloaf, pork chops, and plenty of sides. We had a group of four and everyone got the $10 lunch plate special which comes with one meat and two sides (+cornbread)! Honestly I don't know of many places that have such a great lunch special. I got the catfish with mac and cheese and collard greens, and Nate got fried chicken (choice of a leg, thigh, or wing) with green beans and mac and cheese. Others in our group got the meatloaf. Service was very friendly and welcoming! Order at the counter and they'll bring your food out. The wait is well worth it because their catfish is the best I've had - it was super crispy on the outside, with tender, perfectly seasoned, flaky fish. I love the collard greens and the mac and cheese is creamy and delicious. It's a very generous portion of food for only $10, you really can't beat it. I loved this meal and will definitely be back for another $10 lunch plate! I'd love to try their pork chops soon.
