Kudos to being conveniently located near the Civic Center when I was hungry at 4:30pm on Wednesday. This is just a hotdog cart with a handful of options, variety of dogs, drinks and chips. I kept it simple and ordered the Sauerkraut Dog. Nothing fancy and for $7.54 it was ok. Bun wasn't great, but the dog had a snap and the sauerkraut tasted good. Man behind the cart was nice. Best hot dog in all of San Diego! Went for jury duty and this place was ready right on the corner. This is one of the best hidden gems in San Diego. Perfect quick lunch stop when downtown. It might be called Brooklyn dogs but they're serving everything you could want. Bacon wrapped Cali dogs, Seattle dogs, and of course NYC dogs that would make any native Mayer proud. Easy to find right outside the courthouse you can enjoy a cool breeze while taking a little stroll. The family that runs this business are friendly and always provide great service. Grew up in Brooklyn and first time I found an authentic New York Hot Dog cart here in SD. They use the Sabrett with the natural casing. Even NY vendors moved to skinless. These guys are the real deal. Please visit them so they can be around for a long time. read more

Ran into this hot dog stand waiting for a comedy show in front of the Civic Theatre. The couple who run it were very nice, the hot dogs well kept and solid price, and they play some bomb oldies music in the background. They accept both card and cash, but cash only tip. I got the Baja Dog which hit the spot, but I regretted not pulling the trigger on the bacon wrapped dog. The food is amazing! I've had the NY red onion dog, sauerkraut dog, and spicy dog. I was excited to see the red onions the most. It brought back childhood memories of NY. I did have a little detour from Chilanga's - while I was waiting for my spouse to park, I sat at a shady table with a woman who was telling me about the poke truck (Island Mike's) & explaining that her coworker ran it as a side hustle, and that the poke was delicious because he had lived in Hawaii. I agonized a bit - get my Chilanga's huitlacoche huarache - or try the poke? I eventually decided: it's Mother's Day, you can have ALL the things, just like at a buffet! So I went to Island Mike's first. They advertised Broke Da Mouth poke - and I was a little suspicious at first - cuz Island Mike's didn't look like a Hawaii native but a mainlander who spent some time there. BUT... I got my poke "island style" (furikake, sushi rice, and the poke - not lots of distractions like seaweed salad or ginger like in the "mainland style") - and it really was off the hook. Really fresh & delicious and perfectly made. YUM & YUM. $12 for one scoop (the smaller size) & very worth it. Of course I still needed my Chilanga's so then I got the huitlacoche huarache (a vegetarian taste of heaven - shredded lettuce, huitlacoche, Mexican cheese on a huarache (masa dough) & tried the mango passion fruit agua fresca. The huarache is huge and I'd already had the little poke, so I took most of it home to eat later. But it was just as yummy as I remembered. And the agua fresca is amazing. I'll still crave Chilanga's but now I'll crave Island Mike's too. I need to get down here more often because it is a super fun outing that is too good to waste on tourists!

On our second pass, FSD actually pulled us right in front of the entrance--even in a red zone for a brief moment--just so we could finally see the Starlite sign. It honestly felt like the car knew we weren't recognizing the place. It was such a funny experience that made FSD seem almost human. Once inside, we were blown away. The interior is absolutely top-notch--stylish, elegant, and full of character. The pistachio dessert and the chocolate mousse were pure heaven, rich, smooth, and beautifully presented. The hidden disco room with the waterfall is simply insane and adds such a unique vibe to the experience. Even the restrooms are thoughtfully designed and incredibly cool. Starlite isn't just a place for dessert--it's an experience from the moment you arrive until you leave. Looking back, I think just ordering the charcuterie tower by itself should be good enough for appetizers. I also ordered farmer's market fruit salad. It was okay. Unfortunately there was way too much arugula and the bitterness overwhelmed whatever other flavors that was part of the salad. Again, very average experience and not justified by the high price. For the actual entree, I ordered a bone-in dry aged rib eye, my dad ordered the petit filet NY strip, and my mom had catch of the day, which happened to be the sea bass for $38. I didn't think my rib eye was bad, but it wasn't overly amazing either. The NY strip was awesome and wish I had ordered that instead. The sea bass was also cooked to perfection. Sadly, seems like my main dish was the only one that was off. For the side dishes, I do highly recommend the potato puree. The roasted mushroom is again, overly salted. For dessert, we ordered coffee and a tiramisu cheesecake. Amazing amazing cheesecake and excellent coffee. When I asked where the coffee was from, the server actually gave us a free bag of coffee beans since they actually don't sell the coffee at the roaster, so I really appreciated this gesture. Overall, I think the quality of the food here is somewhat inconsistent. Some dishes we had were great and others were off. But the excellent service here (and the fact they gave us free bag of coffee) warrants an extra star, which is why I'm giving this place a 4/5. Would I come back to this place again though? Probably not given how expensive the food is and the inconsistently quality, but it was nice that I gave this place a try in San Diego.

Real New York Hot Dog stand! They have 2 locations they serve the red onion sauce, chili dogs, nacho dog, Baja dog, sauerkraut dog and famous bacon dog. They take tap , cash or a credit card. The food is fabulous, the food stand is super clean, and the staff super knowledgeable of their fresh ingredients. Super affordable being that it's an authentic hot dog you can only get from New York. I took a second look I couldn't believe the unique blue and yellow umbrella stand is here in San Diego. Not only was the hot dog I received amazing (with the full spread of condiments available for me to jazz it up), the couple behind the stand were incredibly sweet. This time it was in the parking lot across from The Joint and a few paces from The Harp and Pacific Shores. As the only hot dog cart in the area, it's a no-brainer. There aren't any alternatives along the sidewalk, other than maybe driving to the Jack in the Box down the boulevard or track down a taco shop nearby, but that's still too far for the usual hungry zombie shuffling down the sidewalk or for bar patrons that just closed their tab out. My Costco sensibilities say I shouldn't pay more than a buck-fifty for a plain hot dog, which includes a soda pop. There are a variety of specialty dogs, sausages, and vegan tofu dogs on the menu, with pricing between $2.25 for a plain turkey dog and $4.75 for a loaded dog. Unfortunately, the bacon-wrapped TJ danger dog is not on the menu. There is also an assortment of condiments to fully dress it up. Thumbs up for the Sriracha. The barbecue and hot sauces in unlabeled squeeze bottles are also good to try. Soft drinks to wash it all down are sold separately for $1. I had the OB Special. It was meh; not great. My gripe is that it was served up cold. I don't think any part of it was even warmed up. I've had dirty water dogs and grilled dogs, where they've been cooked and served hot. Maybe the propane tank was empty or they forgot to light it, but I thank my iron stomach for not suffering any illnesses. The relative easy to find location, late night snacking hours, and good customer service are all winners, but getting a Cold Diggity Dog is such a bummer.
