Maybe I wasn't wasted enough so I just don't get it, but I did stop by for a dawg. It's been a while since I've hung out for a late night bender in Ocean Beach and noticed the cart when it was around the corner from Winstons Beach Club. This time it was in the parking lot across from The Joint and a few paces from The Harp and Pacific Shores. As the only hot dog cart in the area, it's a no-brainer. There aren't any alternatives along the sidewalk, other than maybe driving to the Jack in the Box down the boulevard or track down a taco shop nearby, but that's still too far for the usual hungry zombie shuffling down the sidewalk or for bar patrons that just closed their tab out. My Costco sensibilities say I shouldn't pay more than a buck-fifty for a plain hot dog, which includes a soda pop. There are a variety of specialty dogs, sausages, and vegan tofu dogs on the menu, with pricing between $2.25 for a plain turkey dog and $4.75 for a loaded dog. Unfortunately, the bacon-wrapped TJ danger dog is not on the menu. There is also an assortment of condiments to fully dress it up. Thumbs up for the Sriracha. The barbecue and hot sauces in unlabeled squeeze bottles are also good to try. Soft drinks to wash it all down are sold separately for $1. I had the OB Special. It was meh; not great. My gripe is that it was served up cold. I don't think any part of it was even warmed up. I've had dirty water dogs and grilled dogs, where they've been cooked and served hot. Maybe the propane tank was empty or they forgot to light it, but I thank my iron stomach for not suffering any illnesses. The relative easy to find location, late night snacking hours, and good customer service are all winners, but getting a Cold Diggity Dog is such a bummer. read more

Omg this place is so good. The vegan spicy hot dog is the best. I get it with cream cheese, cheese, siracha, and onion! It's only open Fri and Sat nights - I manage a bar and after aong night. I get so excited to get a vegan dog! This is the perfect late night spot to grab a snack. read more

I've been hotdog jumping all night just on a craving with my bf. The dogs were good.. nothing memorable.. but they weren't bad. I had the OB special. It had a lot of toppings on it though, so that was a plus. It had two types of bacon (pork and turkey), caramelized onions, and nacho cheese on it. Probably wouldn't purposely seek the cart out to get a hotdog, but if I was nearby and starving I would stop by since the dogs were decently priced. read more

Best late night stop in OB before, after, or in between bars. Just look for the red and yellow umbrellas. I generally roll up cross eyed and stumbling and all I have to do is mumble and point at the menu before I'm transferred to my own slice (bun?) of heaven. Considering most of the patrons at this late night stop are drunk and stumbling, I have to give extra credit for the smiling faces they always seem to have here. In addition to the friendly service, it's just a few bucks for a delicious dog and great people watching, so be sure to stop by to say hi to Thumper. ABSOLUTE FAVORITE: Red Rocket with Cream Cheese. These are no ordinary hot dogs. I'm a big fan of late night hot dog stands and have had others around town. TJ style Danger Dogs in North Park used to be my favorite until I discovered this place last night. We had a variety of dogs between the four of us and every one of them was delicious. Personally the super Kosher with a jalapeño dog was my favorite, caramelized onions, cream cheese, sauerkraut, sooo good. And to top it off the people who run this little joint are beyond friendly and clearly enjoy what they do. This place is awesome! I always end my weekend nights at Hot Diggity Dogs. After a long night of work nothing is better than a vegan brat with veggie chili, grilled onion and sour kraut... So delicious! The owners, Mike and Tony are super cool guys, always friendly and keeping the peace in the late night hours. This cart has moved...just around the corner to Newport Avenue, but they are still serving up the same great dogs...you can get them with cream cheese and the cooked onions are to die for...this isn't your normal run of the mill hot dog cart! And the couple that run it are very nice and personable and they have the cutest dog you've ever seen...she goes by the name of Thumper!
