BRC is great! Once a month, after our facials up the block at Beauty Strike, my mom and I stop in for an Iced Maple Shay with oat milk. The baristas are always super sweet and friendly, and the lattes never disappoint. I've tried a few of their savory meat pies as well as some of the desserts (I don't think they're made in house), but they're all super tasty. It's also really cozy and spacious inside, and the wifi is fast so it's a great place to get work done. Just visited this location. Reluctant, slightly rude service that made me never want to return. I had two old rewards cards, buy 9, get tenth free. Firstly, she confirmed that these cards are still accepted, but no longer issued. Between the two cards, the total purchased drinks were 15. I requested to combine the two cards for one free drink. This seemed to blow her mind, and she wanted me to buy another drink before giving me any for free. Finally she said, "I don't get it, but whatever, what do you want?" she said, and proceeded to ring me up one drink for free in exchange for the two cards, with a side of attitude. The second star is for the actual drink, although it was overall a one-star experience based on the feeling I walked out of there with. She made me feel like a scam artist. Was my second time here in December 2020 and it was a nice experience. Covid precautions were being taken to make the coffee shop feel as safe as possible - everyone wearing masks, readily available hand sanitizer, and even line formation outside of the location (as opposed to inside). This is a really nice coffee shop. The staff is laid back and friendly, the coffee drink I had was very tasty (Maple Shay) and the playlists of music was the best I've heard in NYC. I noticed they had baked goods in the case, but I didn't get any (my friend was there vending cookies in their pop-up series). The outdoor seating was a bonus to the full-glass, airy, spacious shop with long window seating (unavailable) and there was a giant bottle of sanitizer at the condiment station. Found this spot while walking around with my boyfriend and we came in to shelter ourselves from the freezing cold. We didn't stay long but the place was cute and hipster-y. I think it would be a good place to do work on a computer or catch up with a friend. Just had a strange interaction with the barista that really soured my experience. I'm a friendly Texan who hasn't ever been in and was the only customer in line. I ordered and was looking at the options for beans when he abruptly asked me if "that was going to be it for me." I told him I'd go ahead and pay and then keep looking. When I brought a container up, he asked me if I had any questions, and I mentioned I was looking for a good blend and wondered if he liked this one. He proceeded to pretty rudely tell me how his taste was so different than others that he wouldn't ever make a recommendation. I laughed and asked what made it so different and maybe he could just share what was a popular seller. His response was similarly uncongenial. Why ask if I had questions? I owe this establishment my life savings. I don't know why I keep subjecting myself to a pre-morning run empty stomach cold brew, but it has proven to be the bane of my gastrointestinal existence lately. This morning, I was on my everyday run. About a mile in, running through Clinton Hill, nature called. And nature didn't call to say hello, nature called to make me beg for every ounce of mercy I had. I was to do what nature wanted me to do, with or without a restroom. I'm a relatively decent man, so the in between cars move was not on the menu as the park slope stroller moms have seem to infiltrate the land east of Flatbush Avenue and were everywhere. I remembered this little cute establishment on the corner of Flushing and Washington. It got the job done and I was saved the humiliation of soiling myself. The bathroom is stickered-up, which gave me the vibe it was a trendy-wendy Bushwick dive bar. This helped me find god in that bathroom, as it made me feel like I was a just a decrepit bar fly just going to the bathroom at my local spot and not a foreign tourist in some nice Brooklyn cafe bathroom decked out with West Elm. It helped me be myself: a man who had to unload himself. The place itself is nice. They're certainly playing on the adage of the Navy Yards being a formerly rustic and industrial neighborhood. (My mother's uncle lived in the area during WWII. He was a sailor. He was killed aboard the USS Indianapolis and never made it home as he found his eternal sleep in the sanctuary of her boiler room.) It fits the block well and goes along with the history of the area. The design is cozy and the bathrooms are nice. The baristas themselves were punctual with orders and knew what they were doing. Today, it was two kind looking women who seemed like they read theory and are apart of a Neo-Marxist book club. Cool people. I'd join their book club! I ordered an espresso, as it was the least I could do in retribution to what I did in their bathroom. It was strong and good, I don't know, I don't drink espresso. I got a cup of coffee, it was acidic and horrible, lingering. I asked for something, anything else. So they gave me something burnt. $5 for 16oz of some of the worst coffee I've had this year. Two stars because at least they gave me a fresh cup. I'm finishing the coffee for the caffeine. It tastes unpleasant. You'd think the person whose job it is to know all about coffee would maybe try and explain the coffee or ask "do you want something dark or something light?". I like the food/coffee here but the female brown skinned Barista is just SO rude I would give this place no stars if I can. I asked for less ice and she immediately tells me, "It's really strong, you're going to need the ice". So I responded, "I've had it many times.. it's not strong." She then tells me, "No, you're going to NEED the ice". Excuse me? Even if it's strong, I'm supposed to wait until the ice MELTS before I can drink? What kind of logic is that. Their cold brew/coffee is literally WATERY with ice. I do not want to pay $5 for watery coffee. So I insisted that I want less ice. She then tells me that if I want less ice then they can't fill it up. I went along with it thinking that's fine since I'll be adding almond milk anyways (that paid extra for!) but then she pours HALF a cup of coffee and gives it to me. Not kidding when I say HALF. By about the fifth sip, some foreign matter got sucked up into the straw that had the consistency of paper mâché. It was gross, and immediately my mind conjured up images of smegma (yeah, I said it; I dare you Google it) and the curds that you would expect to find at the bottom of a soy milk container. Shockingly large for a metropolitan coffee shop, bright and beautifully lit, but out of the way unless you're a commuter cyclist heading to north or south Brooklyn from one end or the other. The coffee is is not great, which surprises me. This is the flagship location for Brooklyn Roasting Company. Perhaps the unbrewed beans to take-home are better, but bagged coffee to go is not my... bag. Cappuccinos in house are overly large and milky, and the sandwiches, which I believe sit out too long, have twice given me slight distress. This shop is however a bit of a freelancer paradise. We are of course "out of towners"...there for work and of course all the regulars new we weren't from Brooklyn and everyone stared at us like we were....well, out of towners!! HA!
