My adoring sidekick and I were invited to a private wine tasting and that experience poured straight into our memory like a perfectly decanted dream. Gary Brooks himself was there, the soft-spoken sorcerer behind Brooks Note Winery. His wines didn't whisper, they sang. Balanced. Elegant. Honest. The kind of Pinot that makes your boots buckle and your palate perk up like a hound on the trail. Somewhere between the third pour and the second "this is amazing," he told us we should stop by if we were ever in California. So, like any pair of polite Texans with a thirst for the finer things in life, we showed up. And let me tell you: the Brooks Note tasting room in Petaluma is a rustic-modern temple to the wine gods. The exposed beams, gleaming ductwork, and warm wood details make you want to cozy up and swirl your glass. It's the kind of place where your taste buds grow up and your Instagram feed gets a glow-up. We had reservations for a late afternoon tasting and were greeted by none other than Lucy, the softest, fluffiest winery pup in California. She strolled over like she owned the place, and honestly, I think she does. My adoring sidekick gave her the full greeting: head rub, affirming tone, instant friendship secured. Then came the Pinot Flight Tasting Menu, a five-part aria of California terroir: * 2022 Monroe Vineyard: Fruit-forward with a hint of the forest floor, like autumn bottled and ready to dance. * 2023 Russian River Valley: Silky as a tuxedoed lounge singer. Red fruit, spice, and grace. * 2022 Weir Vineyard: Earthy, old-soul depth. The kind of wine that feels like it remembers the first time someone planted vines in California. * 2023 Petaluma Gap: Cool, coastal, and fresh like ocean wind meeting orchard breeze. * 2022 Panther Ridge: Lush, structured, with a finish so long it could anchor a ballad. We were mid-way through the second glass when Gary appeared like a magician stepping onstage after the opening act. He welcomed us, remembered Fort Worth, and then proceeded to give us the full behind-the-scenes tour: the tasting room, the barrel room stacked high with rich oak dreams (no clue what kind of wood, but it smelled like wine-soaked heaven), and the metal vats where fermentation magic bubbles into being. It's one thing to drink a wine. It's another to see its origin story. We eventually made our way back to the table, finished our tasting, then slipped into that late afternoon golden glow. Before leaving, my wife said her goodbyes to Lucy with the kind of fondness usually reserved for lifelong friends or the last bite of a perfect dessert. We didn't take any bottles with us because we already had some back home in Texas. As we stepped outside into the California sun, I said, "Their wine bottles don't gather dust, they disappear gracefully after dinner." My wife rolled her eyes and muttered, "You're aging like wine, all right. Getting drier by the year." She's not wrong. Final thought? This is the kind of tasting that doesn't end when you leave the building. It lingers in your memory like a perfectly aged vintage. TL;DR: Petaluma charm meets Pinot perfection. Balanced, elegant wines served in a spacious, welcoming room. Lucy the wine pup deserves her own label. Gary Brooks delivers not only extraordinary wine, but an unforgettable experience. An ugly part of Petaluma. A beautiful tasting room and very nice people. I have to reach out to the staff to ask where they sourced the cheese. They said that it is local. It tasted European but they said that it local. Let's talk wine: I wasn't a Pinot fan when we arrived, but I walked out a convert with a six-bottle carrier. Pentaluma Gap and Panther Ridge are now on my shelf ... but not for long! "High vapor pressure" or whatever makes the wine disappear. Me HAPPY. read more

This winery offers spacious and tastefully-designed, contemporary interior that makes you forget that you're in an industrial part of town wedged between a law firm and a metal fabricator. I visited with a friend. We were greeted by a friendly, knowledgeable server. She instructed us to sit at a table then quickly brought over our first pours. After our first glass, she supplied us with a charcuterie board that had meats, almonds, fruit gelatin and delicious local cheeses. I loved all the wines they poured me. They make a lighter, elegant style of wine. I felt they were approachable, complex, delicious and competitively priced. read more

I went for a comedy night and it was a great time! It was my first time there and the space was cute, clean, and very stylist. The actual comedy set was held in the back where I think they bottle their wine. Which was cool to be able to see all the barrels. My only critique is that I wish there was more seating in the front, but I will definitely come back with friends again. read more

Been driving by this tasting room for years. It has a modern glass, cement facade outside and located on the northern part of Petaluma Blvd. So we stopped in. Lori greeted us and we proceeded to a table. There were other guest tasting and chatting. We perused the tasting menu and decided on a Pinot Noir from Mendocino. It was superb, not a typical fruit forward Pinot from Sonoma County. I could just imagine the tiny grapes basking in the cooler climate of Mendocino and Brooks Note magically developing and bringing out the best of this delicate grape. This wine tasting saved me a trip to Mendocino, one of my favorite places in the world and fantastic wines from that region as well. Lori gave us info on the wine, how it came about and also the wine club. They offer live music on certain nights as well. My only note( no pun) the acoustics in the room, There are high ceilings with all the industrial components exposed, cement floors, glass, and metal framed chairs so even normal level of chatting can really grate on the nerves and take away from the tasting of the wine but Brooks Note wines are definitely worth a stop, a taste a purchase. read more

I had no idea this place was here, which I think is the biggest challenge honestly. This is a wine tasting room located just past the terminus of Lakeville Highway on Petaluma Boulevard North. I have a fair amount of wine at home and multiple wine relationships, and as a result, I am often hesitant to "go tasting". But, this place has shown up for me in coincidental ways during the last wee or so, and as I was walking through town on a leisurely Sunday, I thought I would stop in and check it out. The tasting room is expansive, rustic beautiful, with higher ceilings and an adjoining barrel room likely used for events (such as today's "sip and paint" event. The attendants on duty were courteous and kind and welcoming. I sat at a high top table and was presented with a lovely cheese plate to accompany my tasting. The focus this month is apparently on the Petaluma Gap AVA, with multiple wines representing. Everybody has their own palate, so your mileage may vary. For me, the winners of the day were Pinot Blanc from Mendocino county, a single Vineyard Pinot Noir from Panther Ridge at the edge of Sonoma Mountain, a well balanced GSM blend, and a Blaufrankish -- a red from just south of Hwy 37 in Novato. If you are in Petaluma, this place is a great option for wine tasting. Off the beaten path a little bit, but worth the walk. I believe they have dedicated parking as well. The wines are reasonably priced, and the $30 tasting (if you don't buy any wine) Is quite fair for what you get. The wine is clean, well crafted and worth the visit. read more

My friends and I tried going to a different winery but it was closed, so we ended up here as walk-ins instead! There is a parking lot next to the building but it is actually not for this business, you have to park along the street or in a different lot if you want to avoid getting a ticket. We were here around 11:30am on a Saturday and were the only ones there. I was impressed with the interior design, it is a beautiful space that is very well-decorated. We were seated at a high-top table and the host brought out a meat/cheese tray to accompany our tasting which was a nice surprise. A friend in our group is pregnant and could not participate in the tasting, she requested something else to drink besides wine. I paid $5 for her to have a non-alcoholic drink to sip here which was fine, but every other tasting room over the weekend gave her something to sip on for free without her even asking. We did their Current Release Tasting which was $30/person. I know most flights have more reds than whites, this one came with 5 wines to taste--4 reds and 1 white. Pinot Noir is my favorite red, so I was glad we got to try 2 different Pinots! We also had a GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) and then our host added a Syrah tasting to the lineup so we could taste that component separately. We got to take a tour of the facility since we were the only ones there, it was cool to see where the wine is made and stored! I enjoyed getting to hear more about the Petaluma Gap and specific regions where they source their grapes. They had a map at our table that was labeled with the different regions, it was helpful to have a visual. It was not my favorite tasting of the day but overall we had a good experience here; I'm glad we were able to come despite it being a last minute decision! read more

I've visited Brooks Note Winery two times now and this is an absolutely wonderful addition to downtown Petaluma! During my first visit, Gary, the owner and winemaker hosted myself and a friend and was very passionate about the wine and sharing his knowledge. During my latest visit, his staff provided a wonderful experience too. You get so much more than just a wine tasting when visiting Brooks Note. They also provide a charcuterie plate to pair with the wines during your tasting. For the price of $30 for the tasting,  this is a steal! The fee is waived with the purchase of 3 bottles. The atmosphere is very modern, welcoming and warm with large windows and lot of sunlight and lounge type seating and comfortable chairs and tables throughout the tasting room.  During my last tasting I tried: - 2021 Rose of Pinot Noir - 2019 Chardonnay  - 2019 Pinot Noir, Marin County - 2019 Pinot Noir, Petaluma Gap - 2019 GSM I thoroughly enjoyed each wine and my favorites were the Marin County Pinot Noir and the GSM too.  In addition to being a tasting room they also have many events including music, comedy nights and paint nights too. Petaluma has certainly become a gathering place for all things wine tasting, with brand new wine tasting rooms to brand new winery estates, the wine growing region known as the Petaluma Gap has had a number of new wineries open up to the public in the past few years and this burgeoning renaissance has been exemplified by the opening of Brooks Note Winery. Located on Petaluma Boulevard North in what was once a garage that once was a manufacturer of Formula One automobiles, Brooks Note Winery is a small family owned winery that focuses on balanced wines sourced from regions that even the most ardent wine lovers may not be as familiar with. Although owners Garry and Joanne Brooks chose to focus on Pinot Noir wines, they also produce wines as varied as Chardonnays, Roses and Cabernet Sauvignons. What brought me here on a weekend afternoon was a friend who not only lives in the area, but has also tried Brooks Note Winery a couple times in the past year that they have opened and highly recommended Brooks Note Winery after her past experiences. So one day that we had some availability, I was game for a visit to sample their current release tasting which cost 30 dollars a person. Although we didn't have reservations, the staff graciously accommodated us by placing us at the end of a long table that was reserved for a future wine tasting party. Upon entry to Brooks Note Winery new tasting room, visitors will instantly notice the beautiful interior remodel job that their team has managed to perform. With natural light coming from their front door one can take in their roaring fir or sit in a welcoming seating area complete with plush chairs. The team at Brooks Note Winery, as led by tasting room manager Sean alongside his associates Bernie and Carly treated us as if we were V.I.P.s, as they poured us wines beyond their current release tasting menu. Our journey began with their 2022 Pinot Blanc which was sourced from Mendocino County and had a nice scent of grapefruit on the nose. With a bold taste on the palate this wine would have paired perfectly with a nicely cooked trout, but luckily we got to sample it with a wide variety of bites thanks to a generously plated charcuterie plate that they presented us with, which included three types of cheese, salami, rustic crackers, almonds, dried fruit, and berries. For our second pour, we enjoyed a special pour not listed on their current tasting menu, their 2020 Pinot Noir North Coast, which was sourced from four wineries across Marin, Sonoma and Mendocino counties. With a scent of maraschino cherries on the nose, this super light red wine inherited the title of a Tuesday Night pizza wine, which is right up my alley as it paired nicely with the wedge of Cowgirl Creamery cheese that they provided for us. For our third pour, we received their 2020 Pinot Noir from Weir Vineyards in Mendocino County. With a unique perfume in the nose, this wine had more floral notes that one would be used to with Pinots and paired nicely with the deli meats on our charcuterie plate. And for our fourth pour, we enjoyed their 2021 Pinot Noir, which was sourced from a vineyard in the nearby Petaluma Gap in Novato that we learned that benefits from the winds coming in from two different directions. This was the darkest of the Pinots we had all afternoon, with scents of Earl Grey tea and blackberries, and was one of their wines they serve on tap here at Brooks Note Winery. A wine that is richer and drier than most of their other wines, this would pair nicely with a hearty steak. For our fifth and sixth pours, we enjoyed two wines sourced from San Benito County, which is not necessarily a huge producer of wine; their 2020 GSM, which was a combination of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, and their 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon. Their GSM was highlighted by the Grenache as it was not as heavy as would have been expected, and would have paired perfectly with scallops. Their Sauvignon didn't have too many tannins in it, which was nice and could easily be drunk on its own without any food, but not on a warm day. Just as we were all wined out for the afternoon, Sean poured us their 2020 Syrah from Stolpman Vineyards in Santa Barbara County, from a bottle which they normally don't have open, and it was light and less tannic than their other wines, and it too would have been a nice wine to be savored on its own. We tasted so many wines and paired them with so many lovely bites, this was a wine tasting experience to savor. After ten years of making wine, Brooks Note Winery now has a beautiful home to showcase their winemaking abilities. With this lovely tasting room that visitors have been coming to from both near and far for the past few months, Petaluma is lucky to have this new tasting room in its respective portfolio, and we are lucky that they even exist to produce and pour wine to anyone who loves them. read more

Gary Brooks the owner is often found here pouring wine and chatting with the customers. The wines are all excellent - every one of them. I have not had one yet that I didn't care for. I am not a Chardonnay drinker and I came home upon joining in February with two bottles of Chardonnay - lol. Savannah has been our wine host a couple times and what a wealth of knowledge she has. Without being pretentious, she delivers lots of information in a perfect way so we can understand more about these beautiful wines. Each tasting comes with a local cheese/charcuterie board. The wines are made by their wine maker and the grapes are grown locally. Brooks Note has fun events for locals and for people that are members. DISAPPOINTING..! I've heard good things about this place but in the aggregate, I wound up leaving with a bad taste in my mouth. The wine, touted as "excellent" was pedestrian. Food is basically non-existent unless you count 3 ounces of mixed nuts downloaded from a Costco container for five bucks. It's also five dollars for a bag of chips. That's the end of the menu. The real annoyance for me however was the manner in which you pay. The owner stands behind the counter and puts in your credit card, she then spins a 17-inch screen in your direction. On that screen, there are options for tipping. While she peers over the top of the screen watching your every move, you feel guilted into tipping way too much. You're tipping 20% to the owner (who is not supposed to be tipped...) who has simply poured a serving of wine from a bottle into a carafe, poured the contents of the carafe into a glass then turned and handed it to you. All in all, I felt like I paid for a decent dinner and just wound up having a couple of glasses of average wine and a handful of nuts. The building is nice though read more

Petaluma's own. This is not a distant tasting room... for a subset of a label... of a conglomerate cell ... of a wine corporation. And the fact that it is small, excellent, and specific makes it perfect for Petaluma. Here we get local-focused wine made by local-focused wine makers, so when we take our friends here, we know it represents part of what makes the area unique. These folks are the only ones I know making wine in the city limits and serving it in a comfortable tasting room just 25 feet away from the barrels. Totally unique and delicious.
