I've felt so compelled to write 2 reviews in my entire life. This is number 3. I've been here before and it's a little more expensive than your typical auto shop, but it's a local business and I like to support them when I can. I recently took my car to get its oil changed because I don't have time to do it right now, and it's the middle of winter so I thought this would be more convenient. Long story short, I go to pick up my car for just an oil change and they tell me it's gonna cost $108. I'm in disbelief. The oil and filter is $40 tops. I'm like, "why in the world is it so expensive??" They tell me they put additional antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid in my car. My car is brand new. It didn't need additional fluids, nor did I ask for them. I said, "so you guys just surprise customers with additional services and charge them more?" They say that's part of their service. That's insane. They upcharged me for things I didn't want, didn't need, without my permission. THEN the guy tells me "it turns out I didn't charge you for any oil last time..." Are you kidding me?? That's not my problem! Can you imagine? "I didn't do my job last time, so I figured I'd screw you over this time around." Absolutely insane. I love Brookside. I go out of my way to support local businesses. But this local business is one that I hope goes out of business. read more

Brookside 66 You could start with a 50% refund! Doubtful so here are the facts. I requested new plugs and wires, an oil change and to check the breaks. Brookside 66 charged me over $1,300. They wanted to do diagnostics that were not needed. It specifically says in the summary further diagnostics are needed for the breaks. On newer cars the brake pad life Is listed, and I requested they take a look at them while they had it. I was informed about what I already knew and declined their further diagnostics request. They also said break fluid had traces of moisture though I gave no instructions for this test. I could tell from the phone calls it was quickly turning into a rip-off. Also, according to the write up they said the back plug was striped out and they could not get it back all the way and did not have the equipment to fix that. It's highly likely they striped it since the vehicle has 70k miles and has never had plugs put in or worked on, so Brookside 66 is the only one that has touched the plugs since the factory and is thus likely liable for damages. I was charged $600 for 4 hours of labor. Oil change and break inspection might take 30 minutes which leaves 3.5 hours for plugs. In no universe does it take 3.5 hours for a professional mechanic to change 8 spark plugs. Per the internet the higher end of mechanic wadges is $40 per hours but it appears to me like $150 per hour at Brookside 66. Finally, they did not even reset the oil life on the vehicle. read more

We thought we would go there to support local businesses. So we went there for a simple vehicle inspection so we could get our car license renewed. First, they never have appointments. The car was left there for days to get checked! Then, they came back with a "fail" due to an explanation of an extremely tiny windshield chip we couldn't even identify when they pointed it out. It's like dust. Rather than tell us we could just be aware of that, and get insurance changed for free, they tried to tell me to change the entire thing with them for $450. Never go there again. read more

I brought my car here for extensive repairs, including a new starter, and spent a significant amount of money. Less than a month later, my car completely stopped working again. Feeling frustrated, I took it to another shop, where they discovered that the starter hadn't even been installed correctly. They fixed the issue right away for a reasonable and honest price. I initially felt overcharged, and to now learn that the work wasn't even completed properly is beyond disappointing. I can't recommend this place based on my experience. read more

Greg took great care of me and save me a lot of money. Needed new A/C for thousands of dollars and he fixed it for a lot less. It didn't need a new system because only the belt fell off and just needed to be charged. read more

This place has all the markings of a good service station; great location in a good area + a classic car repair shop vibe that puts off an honest vibe. Tight space for a gas station, but to be expected with the denser area. I don't love going here unless I have to and as usual, I'll go to QuikTrip down the road if I can. Where I'm disappointed is that I need to get a MO Vehicle Inspection and this spot has just not been able to make that happen (or, to be fair, together we have not been able to make that happen). They don't take reservations for them... WHY? It seems so simple. Such an easy way to take these orders and get them booked/planned out. Instead they have people drop their cars overnight and leave them. That seems excessive for a quick inspection, and completely inconvenient. That simply doesn't work for my schedule, and one time they told me to come back early afternoon and see where it's at. When I did, they were a little disrespectful and told me that they already went over how the early morning/overnight is the way to go, forgetting the fact that we'd talked about checking back in. So not a fan. And REALLY not a fan of the painstaking process that is getting a Missouri vehicle inspected. I made a reservation at a nearby station that got canceled by them when I arrived. A 39th Street spot straight up said "No." Another Waldo station and they said "Not this week, likely not next." I have a feeling the stations just don't want to do them, but I say figure it out because we all got to get them done and might as well be efficient with it. read more

Here's what happens... My car, sometimes it gets low on gas. Just like I need coffee, my car needs it's own kind of fuel. I go to Roasterie, my car goes to Brookside 66. It's as simple as that. I drive in, all ol' school like, because the lot they're in is small (how did BIG cars of the past deal with the SMALL spaces of the time?!?!). I get out, I put my card in the thing and the nozzle in the hole, start to squeeze, and let the golden nectar pour down the gullet of my econobox. Then I get in the car and to do some texting or whatever until the tank fills up and I can get to driving again. I got my car inspected here for MO plates, and got an oil change, too. Buncha nice guys work here, probably been here for ages, and that's a good thing. Oh, I took the picture, the ONLY picture, for this damn business page on Yelp. Do I get extra credit for that? What you will like about my review in comparison to the rest of these brownie pointers who have previously touted their wonderful exuberance of fluff about a gas station - is that I'm not going to beat around the bush and guide you here because trial and error - more error ... Will determine why you probably don't want to support this place. Btw- thanks krystof for the review of the year on how to pump gas- really, exhilarating. Please write a how to book for dummies, I'm sure it will sell like hot cakes. Well, once upon a time in the year 2003, upon a return from a trip abroad, I had come back to the states and as we live in a gas guzzling society I had to get the machine inspected. Where to go, you ask? Well, I do try to stay local. I took it here, to the lovely convenient gas station. I explained my scenario- I'm returning to the states, the tags are expired, pls inspect so I can get this damn show on the road. 2 hours later, ring ring- it's the boys from Brookside, come pick up your wheels. So, I present myself to them and they tell me the car checks out. Great, I'm thinking. I wouldn't expect less. Only one Problem..... What??? What's the problem? "Well, you got a ticket for parking it on the street" Wouldn't you know it, dumb and dumber took my car after I told them it's tags were expired and put it on a street corner in plain view of passing patrol cars en route back to midtown police station. Really? I can't thank these Mensa members enough for their collective brain work. So.... I was pretty hot under the collar, because I sure as HELL wasn't going to pay for a ticket I didn't earn in my own. I had a nice little conversation with the owner of the joint about where I'd like to park his car for him, if only he's do an about face. Well, things got heated and I told him Ina few 4 letter words that he can pay for that ticket and on top of that can forget about any further business from me. I wasn't about to take the bs coming from this guy. I left and let him think about the %#€£@}# he had made of himself in front of his customers. Two hours roll by, ring ring, you guessed it- it's the Mensa collective once again. This time, he's reconsidered his approach for me to pick up my car and he'd take care of the ticket. I picked my car up. Paid. Vowed never to return here bc these brainiacs have no sense of following direction, or addressing customers well. Adios mofos. 1 star. read more

A bit of an excruciatingly embarrassing fact about Yours, Truly: I only recently pumped gas for the first time in my life. In fact I just passed my one year gas pumping anniversary and no, I am not 18 years old, no, I did not just get my driver's license, and no, I was not living in Oregon up until last year, either. Nor was I living in Jersey. In Oregon and Jersey it's prohibited for people to pump their own gas because in the 1940s both states were worried that people would handle the pumping incorrectly and cause environmental hazards. Imagine. And "they" had never met the likes of me. They must have just known I was going to be born some day. I'll be honest. I've been doing this gas pumping thing for a year and I *still* try and bribe the K to do it for me instead. I find it an utterly disgusting and practically upsetting task and I can't wash my hands soon enough afterward. I know, I know...how weak, how silly, how girly girl of me. Whatever. I just don't like to do it. Also, I sort of had it ingrained in me that it's not ladylike for a gal to pump her own gas, so it's not like I had this fabulous gas pumping role model or anything in my life. I won't say that it's a downright pleasurable experience here, or anything, but Brookside gets points for being small, less overwhelming and a bit old school, as others have mentioned, than, say KCMO's curiously beloved QT (seriously, I do not get the love for QT). I went in yesterday morning to the service station get my oil changed and it seemed a reasonable price, all told. Without me asking, they identified three potentially catastrophic problems with my car, too... Wasn't that nice of them. Still, even with this pending doom hanging over me, they didn't try and do any hard sells on maintenance or service, nor did they speak down to me like I was the kind of woman who doesn't like to get her hands dirty (by having to pump her own gas). read more

I found myself in the middle of a cross-country drive, in the dead days between Christmas and New Year's, with three kids and an overzealous puppy and...a flat tire. AAA towed me to Brookside 66, and they patched the tire, quickly and for much less than I expected (about twenty bucks). The mechanic mentioned that I was going to need new tires, soon, like very soon, probably after I got back across the country (not trying to upsell me, just trying to inform, as they weren't going to sell me these tires). Unfortunately, the patch didn't hold, and I was looking at figuring something out. The shop is small and they don't have an inventory of tires for replacement - best case scenario, I was going to have to wait until noon the next day, which is fine if you're a 20-something with no responsibilities but oh dear God three kids and an overzealous puppy. Even though they have no inventory, the mechanics realized that a customer had come in that same day to have all four tires swapped out, even though one of their tires was decent - they just wanted to do all four of them at the same time. That car, by some miracle of Christmas present, used the same size tires as mine. The mechanics changed my tire, gave me the new-to-me one, made me promise to have all of my tires replaced soon, like very soon, and charged me nothing for the extra labor or tire. There were all sorts of opportunities for them to say "listen, lady, it's 5:30 on December 27, we're busy and you can wait," but they went WAY above and beyond. Even with the craziness, I was in and out in about an hour and a half, and was able to start the next leg of my trip at 7 a.m. as planned. I'm typing this from the comfort of my home, all the way across the country. The new-to-me tire did just fine, and I'll be getting my tires replaced this week. read more

On the coldest day of the year at 14 below zero I had a flat tire. I get gas from this station on a regular basis. I was basically riding on a rim. I came into the service center where I saw two people standing there. I asked if they could change a flat tire. One gentleman was standing against the wall, looked to the other Gentlemen as if to figure out the response. The other Gentleman, who seemed to call the shots said in what I as they could not do it today. I looked in to the bay area and was somewhat confused. There was no work being done. I asked if I could just pull my car to another out of the way spot on their property to change my own tire. I let them know I was riding on a rim basically. I was told that that was not allowed by the Brookside establishment. However in there infinite consideration of a person willing to pay for help. I was told that I could pull behind Charlie Hooper's and change my own tire. By the way, the staff at Charlie Hooper's on Brookside get's my greatest appreciation. Thank you for allowing me to take shelter. And considering the dire straits that I was experiencing on that day. read more

Avoid this place! They will take advantage of you. Our vehicle needed a tire repair as it had a slow leak. As the vehicle is my wife's daily driver, she elected to bring it to this repair shop. She dropped it off and was told it will be a couple hours... Cool. At this point the shop was only under the impression that they were working with a pregnant, well dressed, working professional woman that was getting work done on a lunch break. I picked her up, while the work was being done. Some time passed and she received a call from the shop and was told the tire was unrepairable. The man said there was a nail through the sidewall of the tire and was excited to inform her he could replace it with the exact same tire... Woohoo! I was in the car so she handed the phone over to me, at which point his tone seemed to change. I told him we decline his offer and pick the vehicle up. We did just that and paid his $15 for looking at it. I took it to another shop to get another opinion and to hopefully see this nail through the sidewall. The tire was removed and the nail was found to be nowhere close to the sidewall. It was completely repairable! The guys that ended up doing the repair, and who I made aware of my situation, confirmed what I suspected... BROOKSIDE 66 WAS TRYING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF MY WIFE!!! read more

Gas is typically slightly more than the huge gas stations, but cheaper than any on the Kansas side. Service here is great though, we got our state inspections here and everyone was very helpful and nice. read more
