Cute roadside restaurant just outside of Shenandoah. Food is decent and homemade, service is warm, inviting, and friendly, and prices are good. I had the soup and salad bar, my husband had the meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Nothing extraordinary, but it was satiating after a day of hiking and I like to patronize mom & pops when I can. Driving around the countryside on a mini-road trip from DC and craving breakfast, we came across this neat diner with great people, food, and a bit of an interesting past (ask about hurricane Fran). Becky was amazing and made sure we got what we needed. She also made sure our five year old had a great experience. First time for lunch. Food was excellent. You could tell it was made from scratch. Husband's fish was perfect. Awesome coleslaw. Heard about their dinner buffet so went back that night. Not a whole lot but enough to fill you up. Barbecue chicken fell off the bone. Had real hamburger patties in gravy and mushroom, not some mystery meat patty most places have. Nice salad bar. Had homemade desserts. The coconut cake looked awesome. Staff very nice and attentive. I love the morning staff especially. One of the cooks was actually a close neighbor. This will be our new favorite place since there is not a whole lot in Luray. read more

While we were staying in Shenandoah, Brookside Restaurant was the first place we would pass coming down the mountain into Luray. We finally stopped to eat here one of our last nights there. It's a cute place with friendly service and lots of locals. I decided to be adventurous and try their veggie steak. It says on their menu it's their top secret recipe and I was really curious. I was pleasantly surprised! It was kind of like a pancake and it tasted like stuffing. My only suggestion would be to have a side of mashed potatoes with it instead of fruit. I also thought their sweet potato fries were very tasty. I would go here again if I came back to Shenandoah. Tip: If you come here for dinner, keep your eye out for bears if you're driving back up into the mountains. Both of our bear sightings were in the car as the sun was setting while we were driving back to Skyland Resort from Luray. read more

Go elsewhere for dinner. Very little to choose from on the "buffet" so don't stop in here expecting something good. The night we ate there they had Stuffed Peppers, Baked Chicken, Fish Cakes as the main courses to choose from....... It really wasn't worth what we got charged, and I would recommend for people to take the short drive into town and grab something there, instead of eating at this place for dinner. If you are forced to eat here, DO NOT eat off of the Buffet line. read more

This is a lovely place. Just a stones throw from Skyline Drive and the AT, it is the picture perfect country diner. The food is terrific and the staff wonderful. The Peanut Butter pie is not to be missed. read more

We ate here for breakfast three times and dinner once. Breakfast was good diner quality. The pancakes and waffles are great as are the breakfast english muffin sandwiches. I'd skip the ham (a bit watery) and opt for the delicious bacon. The hot chocolate is excellent. We never tried the buffet but there was one available each time we went. Seemed to be a mix of breakfast and lunch options. Dinner was eh. My crab cakes seemed off but the chicken parm was edible and very largely portioned so we were able to share. Dessert - the peanut butter pie is definitely something to order. That was the upside of not enjoying our entrees. Service is friendly. It got a bit slow on the weekends but understandably so given how packed it was. read more

Interesting place to eat. There were seven of us, and we had a number of meals to share. I had the steak, and it was extremely chewy with just ok flavor. The clam strips were old. Great home cooking style restaurant right outside the Luray gate to Shenandoah National Park. This place has a lot of character, and great food as well. For $7.95 they serve a lunch buffet that's filled with delicious items such as meatloaf, chicken, potatoes, and other home cooking specialties. Overall we really enjoyed our meal as well as the atmosphere. They also offer really nice cabin rentals next to a bubbling brook next door, and a gift shop. Great place to stop after traveling sky line drive! -Don't forget to check the back parking lot and look for the pet peacock! read more

Stopped here for dinner after hiking in Shenandoah. It's a cute little place on the side of 211. I got the salsa burger and my boyfriend got the Reuben. The salsa burger was really good and my boyfriend really liked his Reuben. Both came with fries which is pretty standard. The pricing was pretty good as well, with both of our meals costing less than $10. Note: We carried out our dinner so can't comment on service really besides the ordering. We visited Luray Caverns and saw that this restaurant had good reviews and family friendly so we were looking forward to having lunch there. That was NOT the experience we had today 12/4/2022. The woman at the hosting station (Older woman, short hair, and glasses - she seemed like she was the owner or manager - she was ringing people up as well) from the minute we walked in she was not friendly or welcoming. We had 5 adults and 2 kids in our party and she gave us a hard time saying we should've made a reservation. My mother in law apologized and even mentioned we were from out of town and we weren't aware that we would need to make a reservation, she continued to be rude to us about inconveniencing her to have to push 2 tables together (even though there was space to accommodate us). There's a buffet and they provide gloves for everyone to use to get their food. Some of our party got the buffet and left their gloves on the table after they got their plate and she made it a point to come over to our table grab all their gloves and say in a rude tone, "you can only use these once you should have thrown them away." We understand keeping everyone healthy and safe and we appreciate that, she just didn't need to come over and say it the way she said it. At the end of our meal, we tried to pay our bill on a card and tip our waitress in cash and that same woman gave us a hard time saying "She can't accept a cash tip, it's illegal and has to go on the card if we pay with a card." It was just completely unnecessary comments by this woman that made for a terrible experience. Side note: The food was decent and our server was very nice, BUT those things were overshadowed by the woman at the front that made the experience unpleasant and unwelcoming and I would NEVER recommend this place ESP if you're not a local. She seemed very pleasant to all the locals, which made it an even worse experience because we felt like outsiders. read more

We were struggling to find somewhere to eat in Luray during our recent stay at the local KOA. This restaurant was perfect for what we were looking for. The waitresses were friendly, the service was quick, and the food was delicious. The restaurant is very kid friendly and just down the street from the Jellystone campground. They also offer a dinner buffet which includes dessert and salad bar. read more

Yummy food and excellent service. We got a recommendation to come here from our zipline instructors (half mile down the road, Bear Mountain). They described it as a great local diner and recommended the Brookside burger and fries. We were there on a Sunday at about 3pm. Seated right away. There was a buffet option (salad bar, fried chicken, roasted pork, fried butterfly shrimp, and variety of comfort food sides. It looked good, but I ordered the chicken tenders basket (craving) and fiancé got the stuffed flounder. They were both great! Quaint, country kitchen type place. Menu you'd expect, though there was a fair amount of seafood. I got fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and southern style green beans, and all were hot and quite tasty, and the in-house baked bread was so good we bought a loaf to take home. Great country/home style restaurant. We stopped here before hiking in Shenandoah National Park for brunch. It was almost noon and they were nice enough to still serve a few of us breakfast. A great little roadside place, biker friendly. They serve buffet style, but I stuck to the menu for both of my visits. Great ambiance and the ladies working here make you feel at home. The pie was excellent. This is a great spot to grab some grub while out touring the mountains. read more

We came here after checking out Luray caverns. This place is quaint and quiet. I was kind of skeptical about trying the food here at first look, but don't let the looks fool you. We had a group of 8 people and we ordered items off the menu. Everything was fantastic and it was delivered super quick. They also had a buffet but it didn't look that appetizing. Plus, if you did the buffet, you were only given the option of one trip and basically had to load your plate on that one trip. So we stuck to the menu items and all of our group members were satisfied with their meals. I personally had the cheeseburger with onion rings and those onion rings were delicious!!!! Our waitress was super attentive and very friendly. If you guys are anywhere near this place, don't let the exterior deter you from trying out this place! read more

So the staff was awesome. Super nice ppl. We opted to get the "buffet". There was not much there but we thought what the heck let's give it a try. The chicken was good but everything else was not great. It was only $15 a person for the buffet so I didn't expect much. The macaroni and cheese had broccoli in it which I thought was odd. Then there was a hushpuppy thing that had broccoli in it. The salad bar was your standard Sysco style food. Imitation bacon bits and croutons that were definitely stale. We had a dessert that was a little bit old I think. The frosting was hard. And while I was disappointed with the food the atmosphere was wonderful the people were nice and friendly.The buffet is very small so don't have huge expectations. Additionally the bathroom is literally right next to the Buffet. And I mean NEXT to the buffet. Awkward if ur in the bathroom. It's a very casual atmosphere and you definitely don't need to dress up. I think it was a lot of locals to be honest. Everyone was really nice though. If you're looking for something with a little more substance to it you probably want to look elsewhere though. read more

I liked it because it's a throwback to 1970's fare. The price is fair. The help was friendly. Is the pretentious 'Whole Foods crowd' going to see this place on the Travel or Food channels anytime soon? No. This is not the place for a foodie who would not put anything less than freshly picked-off-the-vine into their mouth. Stay in Reston if you don't want your corn swimming in a cup of butter. However, I will say that there is a disclaimer on the menu indicating that only canola oil is used to fry foods. Rejoice! Again. This place is perfect after a day in the park. This restaurant is a super great place to stop in. It is very clean (the young girl busting tables was quick and efficient), the restrooms very clean, the service was wonderful, and the food superb. My wife just learned she is gluten intolerant and the waitress and owner were more knowledgeable than us and made sure she ordered all the right foods. The gentleman who checked us out was super friendly and even told a funny joke! What a great way to end our visit! The only suggestion I would have is to carry a gluten free dessert (ie. Bryer's ice cream is gluten free). Other than that, I would highly recommend this restaurant! read more

Brookside is a very family oriented restaurant. You will feel very welcomed and you get in. There menu does not have a lot of options to choose from but they have a very tasty food.they have a buffet option for $11 something and its all you can eat salad main dish and dessert, it was pretty reasonable as price and food wise.Costumer service is excellent. Overall we enjoyed out quick stop for dinner and would definitely go back in the future.. Don't miss the lemon meringue pie and the chocolate fudge pie :) read more

We had a bad experience today during brunch. We got there and the lady at the front (Cece is her name) didnt even bother to look at us, never said hi. I hope it is not because we are not Caucasians. If not for our server Rebecca who was extremely nice all though out our stay, we would have left the restaurant. My granddaughter was embarrassed by the same lady (Cece) when she thought that we're going to do buffet. She is 5 years old, she walked to the breakfast buffet and this same lady asked out loud if she is 'authorized' to do buffet. Scared and terrified, my poor granddaughter returned the plate and Cece said again outloud that she is not supposed to put back that plate which my grand daughter already touched! My granddaughter almost cried and Cece didnt even bother to say anything after that. She was so rude! Nevertheless, the food was not that good either. This will be our first and our last. Not worth the next visit. If only that lady would be a little nicer and kinder to young non-white people. It is a sad place to be. read more

Hate to do this as the people working there are nice. But today's experience, and the last few, are prompting this. I usually stop here when I do a weekend ride on my MC through the area. Used to love their Cinnamon Toast among other items for breakfast. Today's bread was stale and just doesn't taste the same. More bland. I also had biscuits with sausage gravy. I hate to wait until new biscuits were cooked. It wasn't real busy so not sure why they would run out of biscuits. The sausage gravy was bland and almost tasted like it came from a can. Steakburger was tasty with grilled onion and fresh tomatoes/lettuce. Served on a thick cut of Texas style toast, the sandwich was topped off with a savory steak sauce and delicious steak filling. Service was top notch and our waitress was ultra attentive and welcoming. Delicious sweet tea - not too watered down and not over sweet - just perfect! (overheard the waitress say she made it in batches herself!). Menu prices were very reasonable. The decor was very down-home. The outside looks simple and blended with the character of the area. Inside, the restaurant was very clean and had a welcoming atmosphere. The Brookside Restaurant is conveniently located close to the Caverns, Yogi Bear Campground and Shenandoah National Park. The food is clearly "country" with plenty of meat and potatoes. We chose the homemade meatloaf, mash potatoes and gravy, green beans, fresh home baked bread and a single trip to the salad bar. The salad bar was fresh with a nice selection. Staff provided exemplary service. We were "stuffed" and disappointed that we were too full to sample one of the many fresh homemade desserts. read more
