I asked if they were open through the gate at 10:05 and a lady yelled back we don't open until 10 o'clock. She continues to frantically walk around in the back with an attitude and then starts throwing chairs around. I loaded my family in the truck and left Extremely uncomfortable and weird place. I work on base and today was my first time ordering from Brown Bag Deli. It was so good that I deleted the Subway app from my phone. Solid lunch place. My team swears by the pastrami. The turkey club has never disappeared. Seating can be limited, the restroom was out of service on our last trip, and the street people around the parking lot aren't great. I've been eating here for almost 40 years. If you are having a party, their six foot sandwich is unbelievable. You can choose any sandwich in the menu. Unlike most places that have a preset choice. And the price is almost half of what anybody else charges. They don't deliver that I'm aware of, and getting in and out of the parking lot can be a challenge but well worth it. The lady working there was the only employee today. She was really nice. Working by herself she made the sandwiches on the spot and in an efficient manner. That's about where the two stars end. The parking lot for this business is small and is shared with several other businesses here. The restaurant was clean but the soda fountain had tape across it and wasn't working. The lady stated she was out of bread, turkey, and bacon. This really limited the sandwich options. I opted for ham and cheese and added avocado. The sandwich was ok. Definitely disappointing given these reviews. The avocado was avocado at all. It was a runny liquid like a watered down guacamole or something. The bread was very dry and needed water to accompany each bite. The whole sandwich was flavorless. I was in a group of four and all of us were underwhelmed and wouldn't recommend this place. I have been coming here since 1989 when a large sandwich was 3 bucks. I went last week since I hadn't been there in awhile. Got there once hour after she opened, she was out of bacon. When I get home to Spring Valley my wife and I started to eat our turkey, guac and not bacon sandwiches. My wife opened hers and the guac spread was black. I have been visiting since 2009 and a decade later justified to say this is a San Diego Sailor staple. Very stream line layout, super professional, and price affordable for their costumer base. Resturant lay out - you order at the register and you can eat inside or outside, clean bathrooms, and very well maintained kitchen and dining area. Menu - all their sandwiches are fantastic and the food portions are larger then any nation wide sandwich chain. Not sure if they bake their bread but it's always fresh and taste homemade. Parking like everything else in this area is a headache. Costumer service - always friendly, professional, and attentive to their diners. Went to Brown Bag for an early lunch. I've been here on multiple occasions throughout the years, and every time I walk out full and satisfied! Brown bag is a delicious deli with lots of different combination options for a super affordable price. Not to mention, their "regular" size is an enormous sandwich. A consistent characteristic of Brown Bag Deli is that their ingredients taste very fresh. I've always noticed that the shredded lettuce here is super crispy, light, and refreshing. Would not be surprised if they cut fresh iceberg lettuce every morning for this stuff. The tomato slices are juicy and the perfect thickness to complement the rest of sandwich without overpowering the flavor dome. If you get the chance, try their homemade coleslaw on your sandwich!! Super tasty. If you go towards closing time, they will most likely be out of it! The kind lady who works the counter also works the kitchen and is exceptionally skilled at customer service and putting together delicious flavor combos! This was my second experience eating a sandwich from Brown Bag Deli. The first time, my boss rewarded me and some co-workers for completing a successful project by purchasing sandwiches from here. I really enjoyed the sandwich. Yesterday was my second time and this time I was purchasing sandwiches to thank an employee, who was leaving our company, for everything he did for our company. I was disappointed with my second experience and I'll explain why in my review. Due to the pandemic, Brown Bag Deli like most restaurants and food businesses are only doing takeout service. I'm thankful Brown Bag is able to service the general public. Brown Bag is located southeast from the 32nd Street Naval Base Navy Exchange and Commissary complex. It's situated within an outdoor strip mall next to a schwarma restaurant. I called in my order where I ordered a #2 large combo (Turkey, Ham, and Swiss), a #11 large combo (Hot Pastrami, Cheese), and a #20 (Turkey, Bacon, and Avocado). The lady on the phone who took my order was friendly and sounded very cordial. You have the option to pay for your food over the phone or you can pay at the restaurant. I was even told that they only needed about 10 minutes for my order to be ready, which is pretty expedient. When I arrived at the restaurant, I was greeted by a pleasant young lady, who I believe was the daughter of the lady making the sandwiches behind the counter. Since we ordered combos, we were told to select our beverages from a cooler and our choice of chips from a rack. I grabbed the large bag of sandwiches, everything else we selected, and left Brown Bag excited to eat my #20 Turkey, Bacon, and Avocado sandwich. The employee who was leaving our company and I decided to sit at some outside tables near a running track to enjoy our lunch. After my really good first time experience with Brown Bag, I was looking forward to eating the #20, which I had read from other Yelpers that this selection was delicious. Unfortunately, I would not be able to enjoy my Turkey, Bacon, and Avocado sandwich. When I pulled out the sandwiches, which were wrapped in heavy duty butcher paper, the three sandwiches were numbered with #2, #11, and #20. Keep in mind, I ordered the #20. The #11 was for the employee leaving and the #2 was for another employee who had to stay at the office and would be enjoying his meal later. I proceeded to open the wrapped #20 and started eating my sandwich. After a few bites, I realized that there wasn't any avocado or bacon. I was eating the #2 Turkey, Ham, and Swiss. The sandwiches were numbered wrong. Uhggggghhhhhhh!!! Someone reading this might think that I should have checked the sandwiches, but whoever was thinking that might be forgetting that we're still in the midst of having to contend with this pandemic. It would not be safe for me to unwrap the other employee's #2 to check if his sandwich was correct. I was really disappointed that I didn't get to enjoy the sandwich I had paid for. Besides this mistake, what really caused me to rate this experience 2 stars was the uncaring response from the young lady when I called to let them know about the mistake. I called and explained that the numbers on the wrapped sandwiches were wrong. Her response was thanks for letting me know about the mistake. Nothing was done to correct it. The #2 I did eat was good, but me not being able to enjoy what I ordered made me not enjoy what I had eaten. I was really bummed that my second experience at Brown Bag was not a good one. It started out so well, but it would have turned out so much better if the error of wrong numbering on the sandwiches was not made. Throughout this pandemic, I've been really supportive of small businesses by ordering takeout. I hesitated about writing a less than positive review about Brown Bag, but I would be derelict in my duty as a Yelper if I didn't give a truthful review. Ordered a large sandwich and got hardly any meat and a LOAD of large chopped onions..I mean alot!!! They dont spread the mayo and mustard around the bread..just in the middle?? For a side of Cole slaw....ok I should of taken a pic because it was in one of those containers for a 1oz. Salsa side! And no fork to eat it ! Ya was to go. Been there 2 times now will not go back. Hands down my favorite sandwich place in San Diego. This is my go to work lunch spot and was introduced to me in high school by my dad when he used to work nearby. The sandwiches are packed with everything and the price is unbeatable. The bread is made fresh there too so both Wheat and White choices are good. Parking may be in an issue during lunch hour and they're only open on the weekdays, but it is worth the trouble. As far as sanwhoches go, the bacon may be the only thing that is a bit much as it incredibly crunchy or overcooked. My wife didn't enjoy that as much but I love my bacon extra crispy so it may not be for everyone. Again, I love this spot and continue to go when I can. read more

"Dining in" just too fancy of a phrase for this place. - plain walls with NO decorations or posters anywhere. - at the entrance, you see the bathroom, the service counter, and the kitchen behind it, with the Kitchen appearing to be largely dedicated to mixing, baking, and cooling their own bread. - menu selection is 28 sandwiches in 4 sizes, plus 3 & 6 foot varieties - all sandwiches are the same price for a given size. My large combo, which included chips and drink, was $8.10 - mild banana peppers was the most exotic topping. The bread was fresh and soft. The lunch meat was good enough but not spectacular. I had #2 turkey ham & Swiss; try have more intense options such as hot pastrami liver wurst and turkey bacon avacado. - overall a decent place to grab a sandwich while near the Naval base, but I do not understand why I is so highly rated. - warning; unless you have a motorcycle or a go cart, parking is not a joy. Good alternative to other subway sandwiches and instead of burgers. Can be a little expensive compared to other options however its worth the extra few dollars. 2). Customer Service. Inconsistent. Sometimes they're good but other times not so well. More on the good side though. 3). Atmosphere. Small simple place with tables and chairs. Very hard to get parking and not located in the safest part of town. The place is nice and simple and the food is good. I overlook the parking and the inconsistent service because the sandwiches are worth it. I go here for when I crave sandwiches but do a quick U TURN if the parking is full. read more
