Closes early afternoon, and runs out of inventory quickly. Not sure why literally EVERYTHING has to be made EVERY day. Sure, then it's all fresh. But that also means they have less and less merchandise to offer as morning turns to afternoon. We would have loved to buy a loaf of bread at 1pm on a Monday, but none available. Of any kind. It also has probably THE BEST corner location in the village. Seems a total waste of the premium location to only be selling anything a few hours every day. Just weird. But the person we spoke to seemed to think it was normal. And was friendly enough. Hey, I'll rent out THE BEST location in town from ya from 2pm to 9pm and simply sell corn dogs, hotdogs, and fountain sodas. Crazy waste of location. read more

This place makes great baked goods. My family came here for breakfast a couple times, and what you get really depends on luck and what happens to come out when you show up. The first time we got to the front of the (long) line right when vegetarian and non-veggie croque monsieurs and a veggie quiche came out. Both were great! We also tried the morning bun which was delicious, although very sugary. The almond bear claw didn't have quite enough almond flavor for me. The second time we went they had a smoked salmon quiche along with the veggie quiche, but we didn't see any croque monsieurs. The currant scone was large and delicious, and the kouign amann was fine, but not the best I've tried. This place seems very busy all day, what you get depends on when you get to the front of the line, and all the baked goods are quite good. I search high and low all over the US for the best Kouign Amann and decided to come to Orcas Island today to try just that. I am happy to say it might just be one of the best I've had. Just enough sweetness and perfectly balanced with the sprinkle of sea salt on top. Beautifully flaky and buttery. Per their website, it is offered on weekends. Other than the pastry, I also tried the veggie quiche. We had to go back to get a second slice because my husband and I couldn't get enough! The customer service was some of the best I've ever had. There's also a cute little wrap around porch with outdoor seating where we enjoyed our meal. Not only is everything freaking delicious, the smell when you walk it will convince you that you're starving and must try everything!! Unfortunately, we visited during the off-season so we only got one shot at their phenomenal pastries, and were not disappointed. Stopped in for breakfast right around opening. We had the orange morning bun, pain au poulet, and pain au chocolat and all were great! The line was a bit long, but went really quickly and there wasn't a line when I was leaving. Staff was super helpful and even gave some advice on what to do on the island. Oh my god this bakery is good. It is an absolutely mandatory place to visit on Orcas Island. My friend (an islander) took me here for breakfast when we were visiting him. We ended up ordering $70 worth of baked goods. Oops! I can't say enough about the orange morning bun. They make it with croissant dough and it is crispy and flakey in the outside, soft on the inside and has just the right amount of sweetness. We also ordered the breakfast toast, quiche, chocolate croissant, and several savory croissants. All were super tasty. Pro tip: get here early in the summer to beat the line, optimize freshness and have the best pick of the litter - as some items may sell out before noon. I wish we had a bakery of this quality closer to where we live! 10/10 read more

Couldn't ask for more choices continually made fresh all day in the bakery. Individually made sandwiches are fantastic. Coffee and cream is the best I've ever had. The wait in line for service is well worth one's time. The seating area inside is small and fun with a counter and stools and a small community seating table. I hate sandwiches but after having the sandwich at Brown Bear I have changed my tune. Flavors throughout, made my mouth explode with excitement! We didn't only enjoy a delicious lunch but came back for breakfast and that was no different. I'm not a fan of French baking but Brown Bear has made me love it! Do it try them! Also the guy/owner helping with my selection took his time with me, even though the line went out the door and down the road. I ended up having a delicious sandwich, bread pudding that was to die for, a scrumptious croissant with chocolate, and one with chicken sausage. The apple croissant was my favorite, the fresh, locally sourced apple filling was wonderful and the croissant was very flaky. We also ordered a chocolate croissant, was not as good as we had expected, it wasn't so flaky, a tiny piece of chocolate for the filling. The bear claw with almond filling was good, but the apple croissant was the best. They had a peach filled croissant today, and it looked really good. The coffee served was just ok, we've had better. My latte had too much milk. Get there early, they have a line, almost all day long. All in all, well worth the wait, the store is attractive and all the baked goods are presented in a very appealing way. Lovie and I stopped for a quick bite before heading over to Friday Harbor for a day of exploring. What an absolute treat! We each had the house smoked salmon quiche and Lovie also had a jambon croissant. Everything was really, really good. The quiche had a custard-like quality that was so flavorful and the croissant was buttery and oh-so-flakey. We sat on stools overlooking the small kitchen and watched the baker work his magic. We didn't expect much from this corner bakery until we decided to grab a quick lunch. I ordered the Turkey Avocado Bacon, and although it took awhile to get my sandwich, it was the best one I've had! The pastries looked so good on the display case so I had to try a slice of their Tea Cake. Holy wow... it was amazingly delicious. Filled with nuts and oh so yummy goodness, I had to grab another 5 slices to take home. The staff are friendly, helpful and engaging. My wife's favorite sandwich...ever! Ordered the mushroom, swiss and arugula sandwich and 2 coffees (Americano and Flat White, both outstanding). The sandwich was absolutely killer, some of the best bread I've ever had, while the mushrooms were perfectly cooked and balanced with the swiss and arugula. Whoa this place was amazing. They have the densest gluten free loaf of bread ever. I will be eating it for days. They can make any sand which into a salad. I was disappointed I could mot have the sandwich on gluten free bread but that salad was so so good it didn't matter. On the ferry ride over, we attempted to plan out our restaurant visits and this place kept popping up in all of our searches. It's a bit overwhelming to walk into at first, since there are so many staff and not a whole lot of tables, but stay the course. It's worth it. We ordered the sandwiches, and just a warning: they're huge. We ordered the roast beef and ham/apple sandwiches for three people and ended up with a full sandwich and a half after we were all full! We also ordered pastries to go...if they have the rhubarb lavender scones, make sure you grab one. It's huge. We also got pain au chocolat and the nutella version but 24 hours later, they're still uneaten. It's a TON of food. Want one of their teeshirts next time we visit! read more

I specifically ordered my drink and pastry "for here" saying it twice and asking if my tea would come in a mug, and I was told yes. They STILL handed it to me in a to go cup with the lid already on. When I told them that's not what I ordered, they apologized and then told me they don't have a dishwasher so they can't use the ceramic mugs that are lined up on the counter (very deceiving!) For a small island bakery where you can almost see the ocean from the window, one would think they would be concerned about their plastic waste, not to mention all the to-go bags of pastries given to those of us who wanted to stay in. Or at the very least, make the plastic lids our option. 2 stars because the food quality was good and my husband loved his apple ham sandwich. I really hope they invest in a dishwasher and start using reusable dishes very soon. read more

I would say if you plan on going here, their specialty is deffinately their baked goods.( which makes sense as it is a bakery) One of the only complaints I would have is that there was not a great selection to order from. Most breakfast items were sold out such as the quiche and their breakfast sandwiches. Granted, we came a little late for breakfast so that may have been on me. I didn't have coffee here but my boyfriend did. The case looked kinda sparse when we walked in but what they lacked in quantity, they made up for in quality. We shared an asparagus croque monsieur that she graciously warmed up. The bread was nice quality, I think it was brioche. The building felt pretty cold, no matter where we stood or sat. I purchased the chocolate cookie, and the first bite had long brown hairs connected to the rest of the cookie. I hoped it was just in that one place so I broke off a different part of the cookie, and the same thing happened - several hairs from the baker had fallen into the dough and was intertwined throughout the entire cookie, which was disgusting. Instead of leaving a bad review, I contacted them for a refund. The manager replied and said he would do that, yet did not follow through. I sent a polite followup an appropriate amount of time later, and was ignored. I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt that they are a small busy team so I followed up a second time, and I was ignored a second time. I then later gave them a THIRD chance to reply and make the situation right, and they blew me off YET AGAIN, so I now have no problem leaving the review they deserve. In sum: Employees do not follow basic guidelines to leave hair out of baked goods, and the owners Lee and David actively avoid the work to do right by their customers. Spend your money elsewhere. read more
