This review is based off my experience today. Prior experiences have been fantastic with delicious custard and cookies. Today, we rushed through our meal at Ducky's Chowder House down the street to make sure that we were able to arrive at your establishment before closing. We had a beautiful family outing, a day spent at the beach and showing our son's girlfriend around our lovely coast. They are visiting from Texas and it was an all around wonderful day. We finished our day with a trip to the brown butter, cookie company, literally to be the sweet ending. Unfortunately when we arrived, I walked up to the counter and the young lady with red hair at the kiosk immediately shifted her eyes to my exuberant toddler, who is three and tends to immediately grab anything in sight, which at that moment happened to be the handle to your cooler. He had not grabbed anything within the cooler. He was just touching the handle and starting to open it, the look on her face was quite scathing and almost made me wanna leave just from that moment I assured her he wouldn't touch or damage any goods inside the cooler and at that point I asked if we could just immediately order and if we could get the custard with the cookie special, she informed us that you stop serving custard at 5:30, this was news to me as I had imagined you would serve this up until closing. Very disappointing to us as we had planned our dinner and day around it. They all fly back to Texas tomorrow and will not be able to experience this. I had raved about your custard and just how wonderful your business was, not too thrilled about the customer service. Toddlers are people too, they just have a harder time managing their emotions, especially when it comes to cookies and ice cream. We have been enjoying brown butter cookies for many years, even ordering them to be sent to family in NY. we recently had the original cookies in the hard, pressed down square shape. while the taste is fairly close to the original, we missed the crunchy top and the soft pillowy middle. We met their corpse. The iconic rounds have been butchered into lazy, cold, industrial slabs, sliced into soulless squares like factory scrap. No hand-rolling. No joy. No love. Just blocks of blandness, cranked out in the name of "efficiency" and "cost-cutting." And the betrayal runs deeper. Years ago they separated the cocoa and original packs...forcing loyal customers to pay more for what they once thoughtfully bundled together. We gritted our teeth and bore that insult, hoping the cookies themselves would remain sacred. But now they've destroyed even that. After a weekend camping trip "roughing it" in Big Sur, we put HOME into Waze and found ourselves taking the coastal route towards SoCal. There's no way I will pass up an opportunity to stop by Brown Butter Cookie Company on the way up to (or down from) Cambria. We love this place, or rather, the cookies they bake, and no matter how many years since we first discovered them, they are STILL CONSISTENTLY WONDERFUL. While I'm usually a soft-textured cookie sort of girl, these buttery, crumbly, crunchy cookies are soooooooooooooo outstanding. Shortbread needs to have 3 things... crunch, buttery goodness, and not be overly sweet. Their shortbread certainly does NOT disappoint. This time, we bought their "original," plus their cinnamon version. We also bought a "tower," which had an assortment of cookies, some of which were not shortbread..... like oatmeal raisin, snickerdoodle, lemon, and a couple of other flavors that I don't recall. What was different about this visit was their covid-restricted rules. We can no longer walk into their store. They have it walled off, more or less, with a sheet of plexiglass protecting them from us. No more samples, either, at least when I was there, but that's okay. I know what I like, and even if I didn't know, I trust them enough to have everything taste good !! People are "supposed to" socially distance, and even though outside, we had to wear masks.
