We initially had a company that our home warranty sent out to fix our heater. They wanted to do major work, stating the heating element needed to be replaced, that it was very "dangerous " to leave the unit running. I did not trust this and called Browns. The good: They got my furnace working again. My repairman, Jesus, was friendly and patient as I asked questions. The just OK: I ended up paying $225 for a $40 thermostat installed to replace my old one, so even though everything works, I didn't feel like I got a super great deal. Moved into a new condo and the furnace wasn't working. Jesus came out. They charged a $75 visit fee that would be waived if I used their services. He diagnosed that my thermostat was broken and installed a new one. Answered my questions, was patient and helpful. Got everything working. A little pricier than I would have liked, but have nothing to compare it to since he was already here and I just wanted to get it fixed. read more

The only reason I gave them one star, is their responsiveness on Yelp and for a few follow-up questions. The rest of the service we received was useless and down right misleading. Very similar to a recent review posted on July, 9 2020 by Kelly O. We scheduled our visit and received our quote through Yelp. We chose Brown's because of their star rating and responsiveness. The service guy looked at our Nest, then ran outside and swung the fan with a tool to start our air ... then proceeded to plug his gauge in and measure a few things. He tried to tell us there was a small leak (of course there is when you initially secure the gauge to the valve. Anyone who has ever filled up a tire knows what I am talking about.) He essentially told us we just needed to buy a new air conditioner. We pushed back and eventually he said we could try to save money and buy a new motor ($800) vs. the new air conditioner (around 4000). Of course, you have to decide all of this on the spot, or your price goes up and you are charged more service fees. We didn't feel we could do this on the spot. We decided we'd just use his trick of spinning the fan for a bit longer and get a second opinion. Which we did from a different company and so glad we did. They came out with a bunch of tools, looked at it for awhile and tested several different things. Eventually we just had to get a new motor. Man, you really need to watch your back with this stuff. read more

It's always hard finding good people that you can trust, especially when it comes to our homes. We have been trying different places for a few years now with no luck until today. The gentlemen whom came out, and I mean gentlemen, wore blue disposable booties over their shoes each time they came in the house. The problem we ended up having turned out to be just a little plug, so no additional costs! There was none of the oh you have this wrong and blah, blah, more money, technobabble. We had a very positive experience with Browns Heating and Cooling. They were very responsive, quick to schedule someone to come out to address our HVAC issue even though it was new years day (yes, they sent someone out on New Years day--we didn't ask them to, it wasn't an emergency, but they voluntarily offered up a time window for us and we had the day off of work anyway). What I really appreciate is they are upfront about their costs as well ($75 for inspection and diagnosing, we were notified about this before they showed up. Also, minor point but shows respect for their customers--the repair guy sent to our house brought indoor shoe covers. I thought that was a nice, thoughtful touch. I have learned that the HVAC industry is one that is not reliable or trustworthy. I searched for many months to locate a company to repair my AC unit, most never returned my calls, some called many weeks later, or they tried to rip me off with the price. I was very discouraged and thought I might have to contact one of those franchise companies who I knew was going to charge me crazy prices. I decided to go on Yelp one more time and search, and that's when I found Browns on the second or third page. The start of a new heating season and the heat won't come on. This was embarrassing after just passing a section 8 inspection and now the heat won't come on and I'm getting a new tenant ‍ I called Brown's Heating and Cooling and they had an opening the next day. Turns out I only needed a new low water level cutoff switch which he got and installed. This helped me so much because I didn't want there to be an issue as soon as a new tenant moved in and now it doesn't have to be one. They were prompt, knowledgeable and reasonably priced. Furnace went out on a below freezing Chicago february day; I called Browns and they had a technician in the area ,and was able to get him to our furnace within 20 minutes from our phone call! Wow! Fantastic service by Browns. We needed a new water heater installed and my fiancé contacted them on yelp. The dude got back to my fiancé immediately and was able to give a rough price estimate by email after my fiancé described in extreme detail the issues we were facing. Then they came to pay a house visit so we could get an accurate price quote. During the guy's assessment, he put on SHOE COVERS (!) which was a nice gesture that most contractors don't do. He was fast, efficient, polite and quoted us around 2K for a new water heater which was cheaper than a few other places we got estimates for. They came in for an estimate on Wednesday and the guy came on Friday, so fast ! The water heater got installed before noon and he came at 9. We were very impressed and we would use them again for HVAC services. read more

I hired Browns to do my winter maintenance on my furnaces. The technician, Rahmad, was friendly and professional. He took time to explain to me the tests he was running on the furnaces. He also asked before replacing any substandard parts. He explained why he felt the part needed replacement along with the cost before giving me the option. A few weeks later, the draft inducing motor on my upstairs furnace was starting to fail and make annoying noises near our bedrooms. Rahmad came out again and replaced the motor. When the new motor had different noise issues a few days later, he immediately came back and replaced the whole assembly with the OEM full motor assembly for no additional charge. He then took the initiative to follow up on new assembly in the week that followed. I found Browns to be a fair company that charges reasonable prices and has good customer service.
