As I tend to drive through Hendricks County most Saturday mornings on the way to my parents' house,…read moreI frequently find myself passing this small town farmer's market located directly on the Danville town square. Yesterday, I finally stopped. This is a weekly farmer's market that starts on May 10th and will go through September 30th. It's held on the East side of the town square on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. through Noon. Parking around here isn't particularly difficult to find, though one side of the square is blocked off for vendors. There are accessible parking spots, though given the crowd they may or may not be available. That said, finding a spot along the residential areas off the square is easy. While it can be somewhat busy, it's pretty easy for me to get in and out of my wheelchair without a fear of getting hit. Let's face it. For the most part, rural drivers are just plain nicer. Nearly all of these vendors are under a canopy. The first thing I noticed was that everyone was friendly. There are people of all ages that come here and there wasn't a sourpuss in the crowd. This was simply a very hospitable farmer's market. It's a small market, for sure, but it's a pleasant market. The other thing to remember here is that this is a producer-only market. There are no resale items allowed. Items here are all grown, made, or baked by the vendor. If you see a craft here, and you will, the vendor made it. That's pretty cool. This market, as you might guess, is sponsored by the Danville Chamber of Commerce and vendors are signed up (no just showing up). Preference is given to returning vendors. There's a committee that reviews/approves vendors. What kind of vendors can you expect? I've seen coffee, candles, produce, bakery items, floral, plants, pet-centered items and much more. This farmer's market feels like a more traditional market. It's less commercialized and I love the emphasis on producers. It's also a great way to discover some new Indiana vendors who will definitely get some of my business in the future. I was also pleasantly surprised that more than one person offered to help me get items to my car - as a wheelchair user, farmer's markets can be difficult and the hospitality here really makes me want to return.

Parking can get tight very quickly so come early if you want a good spot. The vibe at this market is so friendly and people having a good time, very pet friendly too, I loved seeing so many of the dogs!!! There's something for everyone at the market, I do wish they had another coffee vendor come through because the line at Hubbard and Cravens was long! BRFM is the place to go for sure!

We arrived ten minutes before opening to find a line of about 200 people waiting to enter. These people are serious shoppers that come equipped with carts, wagons and armfuls of bags. Seventy or so vendors are organized by produce, crafts, baked goods and prepared foods. Long lines of shoppers form quickly outside popular produce vendors, making it difficult to shop. The regulars know exactly where they want to go. If you see something you want, you need to buy it quickly or it's gone. The produce was locally grown and beautiful in most booths. Prices were high, in general, but shoppers were not deterred. I picked up some beautiful and reasonably priced eggplant. But I draw the line at $6 pints of cherry tomatoes. Several vendors were selling fresh baked goods. Bakeries from around central Indiana were present. I saw breads, muffins, cookies and more. I was intrigued by sourdough bread and bought a loaf. Music plays at a central location. Tables and chairs fill up quickly with coffee drinkers and people sampling the various food selections. We had trouble finding a seat to eat my breakfast pizza. People had dogs on leashes, lots of dogs. Personally, I prefer not to have dogs at the markets because they stick their noses in the food. Don't get me wrong, I'm a dog lover, but I leave mine at home. Parking fills quickly and we found backing out of our space to exit a challenge as cars kept coming. Some people park over in the mall parking and walk, which might be easier. I did not see rest rooms or other amenities. I think it's probably easier to shop after you have been a few times to the market and know exactly what you want. Bring a hand cart.

They play live music in the Amphitheater for a couple hours. There is something for everyone. They also have permanent bathrooms and plenty of places to park from the several free parking garages and on both sides of the library.

The market was festive with music playing and over 80 local vendors. Vendor tents are spread out with lots of space. A yoga class was offered near the amphitheater stage. We found a good mix of vendors with about a dozen selling local produce, my primary interest. The veggies looked fresh and I bought corn, dill and the most beautiful and freshest eggplants that I have ever seen. Prices were reasonable. Venders were selling everything from baked goods, local meats, fresh cut flowers and honey. There were some vendors selling craft and artisan items. Most notable to me was a vendor selling beautiful hand crafted leather items. We saw about a dozen food trucks selling breakfast items, coffee, smoothies, donuts and more. I thought the food trucks were on the expensive side but I only checked out a couple. Vendors were friendly and engaging for the most part. I like interacting with the local farm crowd. I'll be back.
