They have more than tomatoes, they've got other fresh produce, and fresh food - a full kitchen, actually. Serving up soups and sandwiches and walls and walls of candy if you have a sweet tooth. The area in the back for food was actually quite busy (it was lunch time on a Saturday), so I decided on just getting some sauces and fresh produce for home. I literally spent a good half hour going through every nook and cranny of this place. It truly transported me to another decade. Thankfully, I live pretty close. It's safe to say I'll be going back more often!

I guess this is how they maintain a salad bar that's so fresh and so clean. (No Outkast.) You animals used your grubby, bare hands one too many times to reach for the croutons, and now look what you did. Now we have to talk to someone if we want a salad, and point at what we want like a child. It's all your fault! Actually, it's probably for the best because the salad bar did look delectable and immaculate. So many fresh a clean vegetables! They also have an area with soup and chili, which the staff will also help you with. There are some tables in the salad bar area, so you can sit and eat your food inside the shop. Mostly, though, The Famous Tomato is a specialty food store. Lots of old fashioned candy, hot sauce and barbecue sauce, novelty sodas, so many different flavors of Moon Pies, and random things like salted peanuts in the shell. It's also a little farmers market, so you'll find lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. The Famous Tomato feels like a hidden gem, even though it's right there in plain sight in Speedway. For some reason, I would pass by it and I thought it was a Fazoli's? It's most certainly not, though. When you step inside, you'll see that this is a special place, with lots of special and local foods.

I was able to try the Raspberry Earl Gray, Peach Bourbon, Plum Pom, and the Bourbon Persimmon Bread. I really loved the Raspberry Earl Gray, got 4 jars for presents (maybe one for myself). Plum Pom was my second favorite; I thought it tasted like cranberry sauce, which I love. I wish these were available in stores but I guess I'll have to make it out to the farmers market to get more. The farmstand was doing a brisk business, with polite, calm customers and a few friendly, kind people working there -- it felt timeless and like a mellow oasis. We bought two tomatoes, three ears of corn, one cucumber, one yellow ('crooked neck', aka Summer) squash, for $6.50. I think all the fresh, homemade baked goods were gone (mid-afternoon visit). We know we paid less than what is usually charged at any crowded Farmers Market in the center of the northside towns. The clerk told me that the melons were from Southern Indiana and the peaches (which looked beautiful) were from South Carolina. I picked up a half dozen bicolor corn. The corn as good. Some of the prices are on the high side (small watermelons were $10) and some are reasonable (corn at $7.50 per dozen). Parking is limited to about six spaces and the driveway is gravel covered.

They play live music in the Amphitheater for a couple hours. There is something for everyone. From fruits, vegetables and flowers to meats, honey, teas and food options for both breakfast and dinner just to name a few. They also have permanent bathrooms and plenty of places to park from the several free parking garages and on both sides of the library.

The market was festive with music playing and over 80 local vendors. Vendor tents are spread out with lots of space. A yoga class was offered near the amphitheater stage. We found a good mix of vendors with about a dozen selling local produce, my primary interest. The veggies looked fresh and I bought corn, dill and the most beautiful and freshest eggplants that I have ever seen. Prices were reasonable. Venders were selling everything from baked goods, local meats, fresh cut flowers and honey. There were some vendors selling craft and artisan items. Most notable to me was a vendor selling beautiful hand crafted leather items. We saw about a dozen food trucks selling breakfast items, coffee, smoothies, donuts and more. I thought the food trucks were on the expensive side but I only checked out a couple. Vendors were friendly and engaging for the most part. I like interacting with the local farm crowd.
