I have long supported and enjoyed Bru Burger in South Bend. However, my last 2 experiences have not been good. One time I sat at the bar with a friend, and the waitress brought us waters and then disappeared for 15 minutes. We left and went to a different restaurant Tonight I met a friend and we sat at the bar. I ordered a lamb burger, that had very little lamb and a side of onion rings. There were 6 onion rings . But the worst part , was what I was charged for 2 vodka martinis. I ordered them using the house vodka and the smallest wedge of lime I've ever seen. I was charged 35$ plus 4$ for making it into a martini. I have ordered many martinis over the years and never paid that much for a well vodka martini. That is ridiculous and totally unacceptable. The service was chill and friendly, and I never felt like I was hanging out at a bar (I don't like bars in general). Will be back any time I'm in Indiana. This place is great!!!! Vibe is modern and relaxed. Big screen TVs but doesn't feel like a sports bar (it can be if you just want to watch the game ;). Reasonable pricing was the biggest and pleasant surprise. Previous restaurants in this location were way overpriced for what they were offering. We had burgers and there are plenty to choose from - artesian, jalapeño, goat cheese, bacon, bean, southwestern and a few other types all for $12 or $13!! Add fresh and delicious fries for $2. We hadn't tried this spot on Eddy Street and finally decided that we should. There are some great burgers to be had in the area, but these are just fine. Prices are a touch high given that burgers don't include a side (fries, onion rings, etc. are $2 extra). Our burgers were well-cooked, but the flavors weren't well balanced. I got the Hiki'Ole which was drenched in maple syrup (almost like pancakes). We also got the MexiCali BBQ burger. It was both bland, and yet there was too much going on with toppings. The plates are narrow, which I didn't mind so much, but made the food harder to eat without making a mess. Buns are a little oversized for the meat. We liked the drinks we got, so that was a plus. Came for dinner on a busy Friday night. We made reservations days in advance and we were immediately seated upon arrival. It was very busy and service suffered. The restaurant was very loud and was not conducive to conversation. Onion rings were pretty good. Nice coating and the house made ketchup is very good. It's very unique and tasty. The nachos were sad. 90% of the plate didn't have topping. The 10% that did was condensed in the middle. Just like they put a ladle of cheese sauce and scoop of chicken dumped right in the center of a large plate. Viking lamb burger was decent. Lamb was well cooked and flavorful. Spinach was a little much. Gluten free bun was good. Goat cheese added a nice layer of flavor. Mexicali burger was not as good as some of the other burgers I have had here. It was lacking layers of flavor. It was one of those burgers that became monotonous to eat. Overcooked and overall just not great. In all it is a very average burger place. In my opinion it is very over priced for what you get. Burgers don't even come with fries. There are much better "gourmet" burger places out there. read more

I would call our experience a solid 3.5 stars, but will round up since they are new. We went on a recent Saturday for an early dinner. It wasn't too busy, but service was definitely off. My husband asked for a beer menu, but had to wait to ask our server what was actually on tap. All the craft draft beers just listed a rotating selection and not the actual beer. It took about 15-20 minutes to for our beers and a couple of waters to arrive (actually longer on the water since she forgot the first time). We were sitting next to the servers station and she was obviously sidetracked and stood around chatting with other employees while we waited. Again, they are new so relatively easy to overlook the service issues. The food was great - we ordered the jalapeno mac n cheese which was loaded with shrimp and andouille sausage...tons of shrimp. It was light on the actually cheesiness, but still good. I ordered the lamb burger with fries and my husband got the stilton burger with onion rings. Food came out surprisingly fast and portions were huge. A side of fries or onion rings could easily be shared. All employees were wearing masks and tables were socially distant. I have been to the livery before (the old restaurant in its place) and just visited bru burger bar yesterday, it was amazing. What surprised me is the value for money. The menu is so good and pocket friendly. You have great choices with the burgers which all sound tempting. I really like this place. Stopped here for burgers after an impromptu visit to the Notre Dame campus. We had a party of 7 (4 adults & 3 kiddos). Let me start by saying I have been to Bru in the past and it was really good. I came to the restaurant tonight, for my birthday dinner, looking forward to a nice juicy burger. Well, that didn't happen. The service was lousy. Waited forever to be acknowledged. Finally got drinks. Our friends had to go to the bar to pick up their own drinks. My friend's salad came after her meal and only after she asked for it. I asked for salt and pepper. Server didn't bring it, my friend went to the bar to find one. There are a few other examples but I will spare you the details. As for the food, there were several problems but the most egregious being my meal and my friend's meal. My burger was almost raw, I ordered medium well. My friend's burger was well done and was missing the egg and bacon. They replaced his but I was completely fed up by that time. The manager came over and I filled her in on the situation. She was apathetic to the situation, no expression or apology at all. I told her to remove my meal and drink, I was most certainly not paying for the awful experience. She did take $25 off our bill, which was sufficient but not the full cost of my meal. I'm content with it, however. The best word to describe the experience is disappointment. I was so looking forward to my birthday meal and free birthday dessert, we are VIP members. We won't return.
