Hip little wine bar in the Kingston Rondout area. We tried several wines from interesting (Gruner Veltliner and Chenin Blanc) to more exotic (a Cabernet Franc sparkling wine) and loved them all. There are lots of snacks and though we only tried the bar nuts (roasted, spiced almonds with the notable presence of rosemary) there seem to be many great things to choose from. This is one of the cutest wine bars I've ever been to. (And I've lived in Paris and San Francisco and now reside in New York City, so that says something!) It reminds me of the adorable aesthetic often found in Australian coffee shops, though I mentioned that to the owner and she wasn't familiar with that comparison. Rarely have I been to an establishment in which intention has been given to every single detail, from the thematic framed images in the bathroom to the fresh flowers in petite "bonne maman" jam jars on the tables. Everything about Brunette is spot on. The interior is beautifully designed -- light and airy during the day and cozy as can be come nighttime. The natural wine list rivals anything I've seen in NY or elsewhere, not to mention the beer list which is also fantastic. The snack menu is not to be missed which is always changing and always delicious. There are also mini bagels and mini bouquets from Hops Petunia (local florist a few doors down) on Sundays! You'll see one or both of the owners manning this quaint wine bar located in the "Strand" area of Kingston. We were promptly greeted when we walked in (our first time patronizing the establishment). Both of the owners (Jamie & Tracy) were working this particular night and both were super friendly and welcoming. You can sense their desire to be a part of the community and neighborhood. It is my understanding the menu, both wines and food, change on occasion. I had an orange flavored wine (I believe the Rkatsiteli Pheasant's Tears) which might sound strange but was actually pretty good, I was told they have customers that come in just for that wine. My partner in crime had a glass of Prosecco and then jotted across the street to get her hair cut. I was left to the job of drinking more wine and partaking in a cheese plate....a fine selection of cheese with water crackers and a few cornichons. The menu is misleading. It clearly says "glass of wine" but twice they only poured a half glass. That is being generous. It was probably less. Worse one glass was of hard cider. Never heard of a half glass of cider in a wine glass. If they advertised 1/2 glass on the menu that would be fine but it's misleading. read more
