My coworkers and I did a team bonding event with Brushstrokes and Beverages. Our theme was creative night, so we were able to paint whatever we wanted. This was a plus for some and a little more challenging for others. The fact that it was BYOB was definitely something we enjoyed. It allowed us to be able to bring whatever beverages we preferred, instead of having to choose from what they offered. Our teachers were Delissa and Misty and they were very helpful. If you had any questions on how to mix colors or what you should do/add to your painting, they were very helpful. read more

My first time painting with B and B was two summers ago, and we had a great time. We returned a couple weeks ago for an Open Paint night, which was a markedly different experience. Now B and B has a designated studio space on Broadway and Linden, so that was nice to see. However, I think the Open Paint night is too unstructured for me. Students are told to select an image on their phones and then to get started and the instructor comes around to guide students through painting this image. But the instructor did not come around often enough to supervise or provide guidance. He was even a little pushy toward my friend who was happy with his painting. The instructor kept telling him to add more elements, even though my friend did not want to. He made fun of my friend, too, which was not okay. I could tell that we weren't the only ones who were frustrated. A couple across from us got completely stressed out and started arguing and both of them were unhappy with their paintings as well. I would recommend for first-timers and novice painters to take the more structured class in which all students paint the same image. Then the steps in creating a beautiful image will be more structured and clear, and the class will be more enjoyable. read more

Good, bad, and ugly. Good: Friendly staff and fun environment! Bottomless mimosas! Everyone was so welcoming and had a great sense of humor. Staff walked around and assisted. They were also very encouraging. Bad: Food prices are a little high. Corkage fee is high ($15 or $20). Ugly: I felt a little deceived. I emailed the staff asking if I could use my Amazon Local deal after the expiration date. I received confirmation that my request had been booked. Upon arrival, I was asked to pay full price. I explained my previous email, but I was still required to pay. I was told that they don't make a lot of money from those deals, so they can't afford to make allowances. The receptionist added that had the expiration date been within a week, they could make an allowance. I told them that my expiration date was within a week (6 days), but they still required me to pay full price. I guess they hadn't counted on me saying I was within the one week timeframe. I am not complaining about having to pay full price. I understand it is my responsibility to use my deal within the allotted time. My dissatisfaction involves them not being upfront about that. I was very clear in my email. I should have gotten a clear response prior to my arrival. My other issue is the fact that they did not make an allowance after it was stated that one week would be acceptable. read more

WE had a lot of fun painting and drinking but.... I cant say I think much of the two instructors. The instructions were terrible. People had not idea what they were doing. They Probably should not drink while working and spend time teaching rather than just complimenting. The shading wasnt explained and the picture looks amateurish. He skipped things the original had as well. It was still fun but I could have done the same on my own or watching youtube. (which my friends plan to have our own paint night via youtube. It cant be worse than these people) It was rushed and my friends didn't finish. And worse off is they rush you quickly out. Also the set up was terrible. There is a table that couldnt see any of the instruction. The lighting was so bad I couldn't tell iff I had unpainted canvas or yellow paint. It was too cramped. Definitely no place to eat n drink. I requested during my reservations to sit with my other friends and more mistakes by brushstrokes, one of our party was sitting alone. They seem nice enough to accommodate just not very professional. (One of our friends thought the person teaching was mean to her.) Make sure you double check EVERYTHING with these people even asking for more instructions. Double check your reservations and any requests before the event. But it was $20 Groupon I guess thats ok read more

Awww, I love painting and sipping wine, but unfortunately I can't write a glowing review of this particular event. First, I should point out that this review is for a Brushstrokes and Beverages hosted event that took place at another venue--the Michael's Pizzeria in downtown Long Beach. It is possible that being at the venue on 4th street would have improved the experience. The Good: - the instructor was friendly overall - I got a great deal on passes for four people The Meh: - I've done a few of these, and this was easily the worst artist I have had as an instructor. It was bizarre actually. The version of the painting (fireflies in a jar) that he did during class looked much worse and nothing like the original. Naturally, ours also looked much worse too. - To add insult to injury we were rushed at the end because apparently we had used too much time completing the first part of the painting. Of course, we had no idea how long to allot, so the instructor would have been the one to tell us. - Trying to balance a food order or even a drink on the narrow table along with the canvases was no small task. We ended up awkwardly perching items on our laps. I might give this company another shot at their studio, but not with this same artist. We had fun, but ended up throwing out the painting. I wanted to try painting for several years and in 2012 I finally joined Michael from Brushstrokes and Beverages at Alegria Cocina Latina on a Sunday afternoon (during happy hour). The painting was a red/orange sunset with palm tree silhouettes. Michael spent about an hour and a half (two hours total) teaching a group of about 20, step by step through the entire time offering advise for novice artists and encouraging veteran artists to create their own masterpiece. Every few months I look at the Brushstrokes and Beverages calendar and pick the next masterpiece I want to try, or perhaps I will choose a painting depending on the restaurant location. There are about 15-20 different locations around Long Beach who host B&B painting parties, they will host paintings at private events, and they also have their own location in the Arts District to host classes and display local artwork. After attending over 30 painting parties, I have met so many new people and made new friendships as a result! We often message each other to join up for a last minute painting event or meet up for other activities. I highly recommend Brushstrokes and Beverages to anyone living or visiting in the the Long Beach area. There are so many benefits to getting out, meeting new people, learning, creating, laughing, and having an astounding time while painting and enjoying beverages. I hope to see you there! read more

Me and "artist" let alone "painter" might as well be an oxymoron. but somehow this class helped me create something that doesn't look like it was created by a 3 year old and finger paint. I was really impressed with the professionalism and organization (and cleanliness!) of how the class was run. All the supplies you would need are already laid out, including an apron. The teacher does a really good job of explaining each step and walking you through the painting with the right amount of breaks that allow your painting to dry/allow you to DRINK and EAT! (Or pee). The entire class is about 2 hours from start to finish. Also, there are a couple other staff present that are good about offering assistance throughout or cleaning up spilled paint (woops). The class I attended was held on the second floor of Asha Mediterranean in LB. The setting was cozy and the wait staff was very attentive as far as drinks and food. It was a little funky navigating food around a plate of paints, but I magically survived not accidentally dipping pita into paint water. I'm rather pleased with how my painting turned out (and amazed I created it). I highly suggest this activity for couples, friend outings, birthdays, etc. Definitely up there as far as one of the more unique dining experiences out there. read more

Overall, a great class given I was able to complete my first painting! I like the setup of having the classes in the restaurants to ease the anxiety and to make it a more casual affair. Encouragement is good... but, things would certainly have been better if the instructor walked around more often to teach the techniques on a more individual basis (which I felt was lacking). It might be a good idea to see who are first timers when it comes to painting at the beginning of the class and to focus on teaching some basics for these individuals since they (aka me) have no clue in doing things that others might take for granted such as to how color mixes together. In the end, it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend Brushstrokes and Beverages to friends. read more

My GF and I have attended 3 of their classes now at various locations. Last night we were able to catch one of their 2 for 1 deals they email out from time to time. I personally have no artistic skills but have been able to create nice works of art in these classes. The staff is always so helpful and fun, which is rule #1 have fun! Loved! loved! loved it! So far I've done three classes and all three have been great. The first class, I did feel a little rushed but the instructor Michael was very patient with me and addressed any problems I had. The second class I took with my sisters for girls night out. It was so fun and perfect for a group of friends, family and etc... The various locations of the classes are nice but I must admit that District Wine is my favorite. Arrive early have a glass of wine and relax until the class start. This is a social gathering so it gives you a chance to meet new people. Attended a Creative Night last weekend and had THE BEST TIME EVER!!! The minute we walked in, Michael and Marty greeted us with warm smiles and the room was filled with such amazing positivity. The night was a group of 10 people, plus my friend and I, and we all had such a blast. This was my first experience at one of these events with Brushstrokes and Beverages and I found both the staff and the venue a fun and enjoyable experience. I would highly recommend this company. I have never painted with water based acrylics but the staff made it so easy to follow. The instructors created an atmosphere that was super fun that had the group laughing throughout the afternoon. If you are looking for place and company to get a few friends together for an afternoon to just relax, have a few drinks and get your creative side flowing, then look no further! Brushstrokes and Beverages, Long Beach, California, is the place to go to. The only thing that was unclear was that no beverages were included in their package price and that wasn't mentioned in their ad for this particular event. If it weren't for the venue extending their Happy Hour prices to the group it could have been an expensive one. Thank you Alegria Cocina Latina, the venue for this event, for the great food and beverages. The prices on your Happy Hour menu were very reasonable. Bottom line we had eight drinks and an appetizer for about $55.00 including tax and tip. At the end we took a group photo still laughing and complementing about the time we had just spent together. We've done Paint Night with Brushstrokes and Beverages for two different paintings at two different venues, and both were a pleasant and truly enjoyable experience. The instructing artist is very animated and personable and goes at a nice, steady pace, allotting enough time for the class to work on their painting before going on to the next step. The assistants who walk around are extremely helpful and encouraging. They offer to take pictures from your phone and will take pictures throughout the night from their own iPad for the Brushstrokes and Beverages Facebook page. Those are usually available for viewing the next day. There's also a server who walks around before and during the class to take any food or drink orders the venue offers. Food and drinks are not included in the package; you pay for that separately. All in all, such a fun event to do, either on a date or with a group of friends. read more

this was really fun! i've been to so many painting events in utah and was excited to find one in california now that i live here. i found this place on yelp and the reviews are not wrong. i chose the firefly painting and it was at district wine. they also have a studio where they have creative art nights, but most of their events take place at local restaurants. we came early to check in, get our seats, and to enjoy some wine. michael was our teacher for the night and roe was his assistant. what a fun duo! roe got us anything we needed throughout the night and was very helpful with any questions. michael was a great teacher, was so positive, and had an upbeat personality. he had fun trivia questions for us while we were waiting for the paint to dry before moving on to the next step. we'll definitely be doing this again soon! check on the 21st of each month as that is when they usually release their calendar for the next month. read more

I have attended 3 different paint nights, and enjoyed each one! First was in September 2012 with my coworker. He was really helpful, patient, kept us all on track, and encouraged us to listen to our own inner artist. You don't have to stick with the same colors. Second painting was unique with three flowers on top of a blended background. I really enjoyed learning different blending techniques, and brought my boyfriend. Final time was with my coworker again painting palm trees at night using dark colors, we loved it! This was my first time trying an event like this. I did it with 3 other girlfriends and we were celebrating a birthday. We had a blast. The instructors were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. The subject matter was a magnolia tree and was pretty abstract. We all had fun interpreting how to create the painting and all of our paintings turned out very different. The venue was Linden Public which was really nice. My only complaint was we had the class outside in the evening and it was pretty cold and windy. I wished they had let us know that ahead of time. Also, the music they were playing was a bit loud so I couldn't always hear the instructor. I highly recommend trying it out. It is a FUN evening. read more

I am probably in the minority of the reviews here but I had a not-so-great time at Brushstrokes and Beverages. I usually go to one of the other paint and drink companies and like it a lot more. This is going to sound like a complaint list. but here are the pros and cons: PRO -Many venues around Long Beach. Our venue was actually really nice, it felt like we were painting al fresco -Easy to use living social, groupon, etc -Can book online CON -Paintings are not appealing and many times you don't even know what you are going to paint until after you sign up -Hard to get into a class. Granted it could be that there are just a couple of instructors but they fill up fast. -Set up is minimal. We spent a good 10 minutes grabbing our paint on flimsy paper plates. The instructor gave us minimal instruction on which colors to pick, options for other colors if we wanted to change the shades used in the painting and the assistant was less than helpful in most instances. -The venue was outside, but the instructor spoke to the canvas so those more than one row from the instructor couldn't hear. -Loud music at the venue and we asked to lower it, which the assistant did. When the instructor came to check on our progress, he told her to raise the volume. We told him it was hard to hear him with the music and he said, "well, that's what she's here for, to assist. Put the music up." Umm. who's the customer? -He did a hard sell at the beginning about his business, which cut into our painting time (we were supposed to start at 3 and we didn't start until 345 gathering paint until 345). -The assistant was just hanging out in the back the entire time, or painting along. And spilled an entire tumbler of painty water on us by accident (it was windy). -The instructor rushed us at the end because we were over our 2 hour time limit. Um who's fault was that? However, spent 15 minutes arranging us for a photo on facebook. -No information on parking was given ahead of time. Overall, I didn't feel it was very professional and I would not recommend to anyone. read more

Short and to the point: This would have been 3 stars, but after tonight, it's down to 1 star. Why a 3: I learned about this through Living Social and bought a bunch of vouchers. I've also gone to other peoples' classes, which is why I would give this one a 3. Leader is pleasant, casual, unconcerned with the finer details of actually teaching you to paint. Just have fun, he says. Why a 1: This evening, when I went to print vouchers to take to class, I was not sure which are used up and which are good. Living Social showed them all marked as used. I phoned/texted teacher who responded and said he redeemed them last night, which is why they now show as used. Not to worry, just come on down. I even added "so I don't need to print the vouchers, you've checked us in already?" and he said yes. I send my family down to art class, and he would not honor his word. Said he needed voucher numbers. Said we had already used up the vouchers on previous classes----why then did you not take my call seriously when I contacted you to confirm voucher #'s PRIOR to the class? Why then did you let me send my family down to Long Beach to your mediocre class, in the first place? Very uncool. My family hung around until about 8 pm, after which they left, not having painted. read more

I recently moved to the area and was looking for a new studio to take painting classes at. This place is GREAT. It's a little smaller, but it's a great atmosphere for getting creative and having fun. My boyfriend and I went to the Saturday "Creative Night", where you paint whatever you want, and Delissa was so helpful, supportive and fun through the whole process. Living Social Buyers Beware! I bought two Living Social deals for this company. The company has a website on which you can book your event and also gives you dates when the next calendar will be released. Although I tried to catch the newly released calendars on the dates they were released, the classes I could attend were always sold out. I tried for 5 months to book a date and each time, classes were sold out. Although I have had a couple past experiences with difficulty booking dates for deals I've purchased on LS and Groupon, the merchants have always been helpful and understanding and it's worked out so that I didn't loose the "Promotional Value" of the voucher. However, I cannot say this company offers the same kind of customer service to it's LS customers. As my voucher was within a month of expiring, I called B&B's to ask for help in booking an event before my voucher expired. The rep for the company was less than helpful and that's putting it mildly. I will spare readers the details of the rude and arrogant comments I was given about how I had six months to use my voucher and how "I'm sorry our classes are so popular that they book up fast". The overall tone of the conversation was "You bought something for a discount so therefore, you get what you get and you have no business asking for my help". The rep welcomed me to retain the "purchased value" of the voucher which does not expire and pay the difference toward a full priced event.....uh, NO THANKS!....not after this conversation! I'll just send my Congrats to the Director for running such a successful business that he can afford to offend new and potentially repeat clients. I'd also suggest that he take some of the profit from his wildly successful business and purchase a LS deal for some lessons in customer service....and hope that the classes aren't sold out! I am sad to write such a poor review because I am a huge supporter of local businesses and anything that promotes art. I use groupons and living social deals to try out new businesses and if the experience is good, I am happy to continue supporting it as a full price customer. However, I will not be supporting this company in the future due to its POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. So my advice to prospective LS or Groupon customers in regards to this company? 1. Don't hesitate to purchase deals that support your neighborhood businesses. 2. Check out the calendar before you buy the deal to make sure there is some availability on the events you are interested in. 3. If you run upon the same difficulty as I did with classes being sold out, don't expect any understanding or help from B&B's. Just save yourself some time and call Living Social.....they credited by vouchers to go toward a future purchase and gave me $10 on top of it for my trouble. Good Luck! read more

What a great evening for a night out! I have gone a few times and love it! I have taken my 12 year old daughter to go paint at their studio and she loved it too. They are so supportive and encouraging. I had only painted once before I painted at their studio, and they made me feel so comfortable. I will be back to paint more! I have to say I'm very disappointed in the experience I had with Brushstrokes and Beverages. This was my first paint and sip, and I would go so far as to say it made me not want to do another one again. My partner and I planned this special night out as a celebration. I was excited to find a Groupon that made the experience only $25 each, but I feel even that price wasn't worth it. No drinks were included in this price, not even a drink ticket for one glass of wine, which I feel would have made it a little more reasonable . We went to the paint and sip at District Wine, a local spot I usually love, but the service for the event was disappointing. I know it's not something the painting company can control, but they should communicate with the restaurant about the experience they are providing. The servers seemed irritated that the painting was taking place. When we arrived, we had to wave some one down, as no one came to take our order. After being served, no one came by to check on us, and we had to flag a server down when we wanted a second round. The most disappointing part , however, was the actual painting lesson. With no drinks included , you're basically paying for materials and a instruction . The materials were poor quality. My partner had a grey smudge on his canvas that he had to try to cover with paint. The brushes were dried up and stuck together . Everyone was given one paper towel for drying and one paper plate for mixing . You could ask for another , but the assistant instructor passing them out spent most of the time in the corner on her phone and was hard to flag down. We went on a night with a "moderate" painting, so we expected a challenge, but our instructor rushed through every step without much explanation. Everyone seemed lost and looking around most of the time, but she motored along and walked by once the whole night to check on us. To make matters worse, she would blow through steps and promise more time at the end , telling us we would have about 25 minutes to a half hour to add finishing touches. We ended up being given 6 minutes and being rushed out by the instructors, who were eager to clean up. To top it off , all of this was done in the dark. If you've been to District Wine you know it's very dimly lit, and we were stuck in the darkest corner. I'm talking so dark all the colors on my plate looked black. The instructor brought two lightbulbs and hung them on the wall, but they did little to help. It was so bad that everyone at my table was painting holding their cell phone flashlights up to their canvas. The woman mentioned they have been holding paint nights at District Wine for 7 years, so you think they would have figured out lighting by now. Not only was this frustrating , it made the night feel more like a chore and less like a fun experience. All we had to show for the $50 dollars we spent on tickets was a large bar tab and two unfinished paintings. Bottom line, if you want to try a wine and paint, go somewhere else. Our paint night was a waste of money and I feel taken advantage of. read more

I've taken many of these types of classes with different companies (Wine & canvas, Painting w A Twist, etc.). I brought a friend to paint Fireflies at Alegria. It was her 1st time and she enjoyed it. Because we came a little early, we got to sit closer to the instructor. I don't know if we'd be able to see the painting in the front of the class from some of the seats that were further away due to the long rectangular setup. I appreciate that the instructor had a mic, but it cut in/out though we could still hear him. At other places, they usually have music playing the whole time which makes it more relaxing and fun, but the music was off for part of the time in the restaurant. The thing that put me off the most about this painting session was how the instructor rushed through some portions of the instruction by jumping to the next step without checking to see where most people were with the painting in which I noticed that many people were still doing the previous step. Then we would miss out on some instruction because we felt we had to rush. All in all, I still enjoyed myself and the concept of the class. read more
