There was a new flavor called pineapple upside down cake that had caught my eye so I handed him my credit card and told him to hook up the household. It's nice that you get credit toward future purchase discounts which are appreciated. I ordered a large that comes with 4 scoops. Besides the new item, I added cherry vanilla, rocky road, and butter pecan. Guess I was feeling a bit nutty. The pineapple was a little too cakey for me but I'm glad I tried it. We've been passing this location for years now and decided finally to pop by. It was rainy, so I wasn't expecting a crowd. I was right, but that still may be a bit unusual in SoCal, where we all scream for ice cream all year 'round. Large parking lot was mostly empty when we arrived and only filled in slightly for other businesses by the time we left, around 3:15pm. It took a minute for us to get noticed by the one person working, who we called out to a few times. She took our orders and got to work filling them. While we waited, I did a bit of inter webs research on why Bruster's resembled the same set up as Handel's. Turned out Bruce (the man behind Bruster's) worked for Handel's and had some of his own ideas about changes to the Handel's way of operating that, let's just say, Handel's wasn't open to trying. So Bruce went his own way, building on the same concept of ice cream made fresh daily in-house, unique flavors and a walk-up window. Interesting. Also interesting was the small portion in my waffle bowl. It was meant to be Medium, 2 flavors, but it looked more like a small, 2 flavors. In addition, the 2 scoops were offset with one flavor hanging over the edge, rather than in the bowl. Wonky. Lots of room in the bowl, why was it hard to aim the scoops into it? No one was being rushed, no line forming. This is a treat. Something special. Take a beat for the presentation. Especially if you're not giving full scoops. Make that bowl look like you filled it as best you can with the small amount you're dishing out. If you visit on Thursdays, you can BYOB (Bring Your Own Banana) to get half off. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make it for that discount, but the treat was still good! You get three scoops: vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate topped with strawberry jam and another fruit (which I wasn't too sure of; I think it was pineapple?). It is then finally topped with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. I haven't had a banana split in FOREVER (maybe 8 years), so this was quite the treat! I am surprised I have not reviewed this popular local ice cream spot. I've stopped by the walk up window and ordered pints to take home from raspberry swirl and vanilla to banana chocolate chip. When I have visited Bruster's, I always want to purchase their banana cream pie but, they don't seem to have it. Brusters has good ice cream but, it's not my favorite. Customer service is usually courteous and friendly. They offer you samples if you're unsure what to get which I have been on the last couple of visits. I'm sure I'll be back. 3 stars! read more

Ehh. This is what I felt after trying this spot. I ordered cherry vanilla and pistachio ice cream and it wasn't mind blowing. I would prefer pieces of cherries rather than a whole cherry in the cherry vanilla. I had a bad feeling as I was watching the vanilla ice cream being scooped.  It looked like soft serve rather than frozen ice cream.  A bad sign was when the containers were dripping melted ice cream on the counter, in the parking lot on the way to the car, the car, and the cooler I put the ice cream in.  When I got home ice cream dripped in the freezer as I transferred my half gallons to the freezer. Orange sherbet was soft and very sweet with orange flavoring.  Better than what I had at Vons but not as good a flavor as Handel's. Vanilla had an inconsistent texture.  Mostly creamy with a small of ice crystals due to the ice cream having melted and refreezing in my freezer.  Nice vanilla flavor which reminds me of Fosselmans. Blue pop Italian ice was cold and icy.  Loved the sweet and tart flavor which is raspberry based. Green tea ice cream was rich and creamy.  Green tea flavor reminded me of the green tea ice at Benihana. Cherry vanilla was rich and creamy with sweet vanilla ice cream and cherry pieces which gave this ice cream burst of sweet cherry flavor. I enjoyed some of my Bruster's ice cream but the vanilla was not as good as it could be.  I was very disappointed in how Bruster's was not able to keep some of their ice cream frozen solid.  You are not suppose to let your ice cream melt and then freeze it again.  It also made a mess in my car, cooler, and freezer.  It's unlikely I will return as I can get better quality ice cream from places that sell their ice cream in pre-packs that come frozen solid. read more

While driving around, I found Brusters ice cream. I saw the sign that said nondairy flavors while I was sitting at the light so I made a U-turn and got some nondairy strawberry ice goodness. They have Sundaes, Banana splits, ice cream cakes, pints, quarts and half gallon sizes . Also waffle cones, sugar cones. Since it was our first time, I ordered a large bowl which I didn't realize comes with 4 scoops...well more to try! I told the sweet server to choose the flavors for me, just no coconut. The 4 scoops were Graham Central Station - swirl of chocolate flakes with homemade graham ice cream (best seller I'm told), Cherry Vanilla - creamy vanilla with a lot of whole Maraschino cherries, Chocolate Chip - vanilla ice cream with rich chocolate flakes, and Butter Pecan - smooth butter pecan ice cream with whole pecans. Another ice cream spot I have been passing by and have not tried yet that was until today and in the morning. I waited about 5 to 10 minutes, and there was no cashier insight. I walked around and out came a young lady to take my order. I ordered 2 peanut butter shakes to go one for the hubby and one for me. Honestly, it was a little early for a shake, which was fine as these shakes will be our dessert this evening. I was the only customer at the time as they had just opened and had a delivery.
