After 20 years of using Buckeystown, I am leaving. I do not trust the veterinary team there. Rude and completely wrote off urinary issue of dog without the urine analysis being done. Shame on them. He wrote it off as his seizure meds and told us to contact our neurologist. My wife had to tell him "can't we wait for the urinanalysis results?" "Oh yeah". He then proceeded to not read them. The vet did not even notice a warning printed on urine test by their IDEXX system, warning of significant protein in urine. The machine literally flagged it for him, and he didn't notice. The neurologist stated that is not a side effect of the medicine, and pointed out the thing he missed - a huge warning. Time to move on. It's a shame. It was a fantastic practice, but when Dr. Miller retired it went off the rails. read more

We have taken our dogs to Buckeystown Vet for over 25 years! Our two Dalmatians lived long, healthy lives with their care. After their passing, we adopted a Lab mix from a local rescue and she lived 15 healthy, happy years due to their care, which included spaying, dental surgery for a cracked tooth, an eye ulcer, and joint pain as an older dog. The front desk staff are amazing! They are friendly and always greeted our dog by name. Over the years, we have had several veterinarians care for our dogs, but our most recent is Dr. McKissick. She is caring, thoughtful, and an expert in the field. When our sweet Lab had a stroke, they were kind and caring when we had to put her down. We were allowed to stay with her until we were ready to say our final goodbye. I highly recommend Buckeystown Vet for the care of dogs! THEY KILLED MY BABY GOAT. They prescribed my baby goat a medication to supposedly make her feel better. Upon arriving home after picking up the meds, I realized they were not filled properly, took pictures and immediately contacted the vet. After arguing with them (telling me multiple times many people checked the dosage and quantity), they finally asked me to come back in to get it corrected. Okay, that's fine. After administering the meds, my goat became weak, lethargic, and then eventually stopped breathing the same night. After talking to multiple second opinions, I have learned that the medicine they prescribed ONLY works if given with a supplement. If the supplement isn't provided, the medicine does the opposite of the goal, and it is actually dangerous to take. Because they did not think to prescribe or even communicate that my animal needed a supplement as well to ensure that the medicine worked, I never had the chance to give it to her, and she died due to symptoms caused by the prescribed medicine. I emailed them to let them know. Nobody has gotten back to me. This was two months ago. I've now learned that they haven't had a farm vet on staff for months. WHO PRESCRIBED MY GOAT MEDS IF THERE WAS NOBODY QUALIFIED TO DO SO?! This practice is a sinking ship. I'm surprised they've not had malpractice suits filed against them. Yet. read more

DO NOT COME HERE FOR ANY REASON if I could give 0 stars... my bunny went in for what they told us was a simple procedure to file down his teeth and for whatever reason my bunny did NOT come out alive! Understanding that sometimes things happen, we were shocked that they are charging us $80 to DISPOSE HIM! Not to give us ashes back, to simply get rid of the bunny that died in their hands! They are acting as if we should be grateful that they aren't charging us for the medicine that killed him or the medicine they gave to "revive" him. My dog got sick after the surgery (7/10/2024) at this hospital and I asked them on the 12Aug2024 by email the details of the medication provided to him. It has been more than 1 months ( 47 days as of 27Sep2024), they are yet to provide the information. I have emailed them thrice and they responded to my first email on 16Aug that they are working on the information and will provide it to me. After that email even after weekly FUP emails no response from them. I would appreciate if they could provide this information so that I can make sure that he got the correct medication/dosage during the surgery. read more

Customer since 2007 and will NEVER return.. Ive heard many people say the same too. Incompetent customer service and care, sending my dog w/rear with blood/infection all over his rear was great for my kid to see, rude conversations, and changing prices/dates several times sealed the deal. Ive spent thousands since 2007 on 4 dogs and 2 cats + referred dozens but now Im just done. - Called for anal gland issue. Informed could fit us in for extra $108 "Urgent Care" emergency fee at 11a. - Arrived 25 min early, next in line, but waited 15 minutes while 3 sloth-speed staff moved and had personal side-conversations... despite 3 customers behind us. - Upon check in, front desk girl said "Oh we put you in the empty 11a slot". I asked "If this was a empty appt slot, why upcharge me emergency?". She looked at me, ignored what i said, and looked back to working... He needed seen ao we just kept quiet...... but this was a total ripoff! - We still werent checked in and the girl had issues loading printer paper... instead of HOLDING our "emergency time slot" they gave to the person behind us who also had 11a .... She finished with us 1 MINUTE after they took him back?!? and we had to wait another 15 minutes around 1115ish. - Finally took us back and had to wait another 20 MINUTES in room for our "emergency visit" that warranted a $108 upcharge for no reason apparently..! At 11:35a ish we hear "Oh, did anyone bother with room (3) (us)?" And someone said "Ohh no.. oops haha". Im glad you forgetting about your "emergency $108 appointment" was so funny to you... it wasnt to us. - The tech and vet came examined him and it ruptured. They took him back and worked it. - Vet quickly explained what she did, but failed to explain variables why, how, changes in diet, habits, etc... and just left kinda quickly saying "we ll talk next appt". Wait what?? - At this point, Wrigley is squirming, leaking blood/infection down his backside. He keeps plopping on the ground in pain blood.everywhere. Im afraid so I open the door and ask a lady wearing a stethoscope "Hes squirming and getting blood all over the place and himself, its bleeding a lot more. Im afraid of infection and really ripping it open more... what can we do and....." She just blank deadeye stared at me, very annoyed, and said ".... well it already did rip open so........... go home and put boxers on him" and just stopped awkwardly. I said "Ok..........." and shut the door. - They sent us on our way and we left with Wrigley having blood and infection all over himself despite us telling staff. Nothing happened. - At check out, i was told come back around the 31st. - My fiancé called in a few days later and dealt with a snippety lady who was having a bad day and kept interrupting and being quite rude. She simply wanted to know the date again AND how much the next visit would cost. SHe was told Jan 31st and around $60ish as well. - I call Jan 29 and a tech started quasi-lecturing me about not coming in 10 days. I informed her we were told by 2 people the 31st and she said Im wrong?? I know what was said..... She offered an appt 2 weeks away and which i thought was odd theres ZERO appts for two weeks?? I inquired if the cost will still be $60ish as we were quoted and she said no... I said we were told twice it would be $60ish and just said Im wrong. Another WELL KNOWN/popular vet fit me in NEXT DAY, no $108 up charge, and his next follow up visit will be $31 not a full check up fee. Taking advantage by up charging us in an already open appt is a rip off! Not training basic fundamentals to desk staff, like delegating appointments or printer paper insertion techniques doesnt help. Rude attitudes isnt how you do business. And sending our dog home covered in fluids is NOT ok! I will say Dr Emory who Ive seen many times is a great vet there... I feel ripped off and very upset. In my opinion, Buckeystown Veterinary Hospital is a complete ripoff!!! Stay away, you now have been warned. Wayyyyyyyy over priced for the services provided. And make sure you get a price before dropping off your animal(s), because they will treat you like a blank check if you don't perform your due diligence because they are not transparent with their pricing, as this place lies in wait for the "trusting customer." Additionally, BVH apparently doesn't accept the records of other veterinary practices, forcing the pet owner to submit to accept one of their examinations/shots, before BVH will allow grooming services. BVH is the equivalence of a rip-off auto repair shop that gouges unsuspecting customers and has the art down to a science. It seems to me that this business possesses a sense of entitlement and arrogance and gets away with it; not me and definitely no more. And looking at several other below reviews of BVH, it seems like price gouging is a common theme. We've had very good experiences with Glade Valley Animal Hospital in the past, unfortunately they don't do grooming. We are definitely going back to Glade Valley and having the cats groomed elsewhere. Next stop, Google reviews and Facebook. There are no qualified pig vets here as they claim. Our potbellied pig Buddy has a hurt hoof so we called asking if someone could come take a look. They sent us 2 very small ladies who were absolutely terrified of Buddy and would barely come near him. The appointment ended with me having to hold him in place (because they were not physically strong enough to hold him) while the "doctor" stabbed him behind his ear multiple times trying to give him a shot. After he was already bleeding she then decided to double dose him and give him another of the same shot because she didn't know if she got his vein - after now consulting with other vets we are lucky this didn't kill him! Multiple days after the appointment his ear that she gave him the shot in looked HORRIBLE - so we called asking to talk to the vet, they said she would call us back and she never did. This was over a month ago and his ear has still not healed. Do NOT trust these people with any pigs - Buddy is just a pot bellied pig! I can't even imagine how these people handle bigger animals like pigs, cows, etc. read more

My pig fiona went to this practice for years and when she was extremely sick we brought her here hoping they would help. Instead they let a doctor that knew little about pigs treat my pet. They were not transparent enough with their actual knowledge about pigs which was little to none. As a result Fiona was improperly medicated my pig causing her to eventually pass because the medicine that the prescribed did nothing but waste our time. I actually called months later and they didn't even know she had died because there was no follow up to check on Fiona's progress. And when I tried to speak to them about my feelings they said their manager would give me a call the next day and they never did. The only time the address my issue was on a google review because I had left one star so it seems to me like they just want to cover their asses rather than actually make the situation right. I am extremely disappointed by this establishment and how they handle their patients. I would give anything to have my pet pig back. Rest in peace to my baby Fiona. read more

I have received excellent care for my goats from Buckystown Veterinary Hospital, and received the same feedback from a client who sought care for her young goat last summer. It can be hard to find a veterinarian who is skilled in goat care, and the advice I received was very helpful and pragmatic. The cost was also very fair, and the veterinarian did not try to talk me into doing additional procedures. I have also trailered a young horse into the facility where she was seen in the parking lot by another highly skilled veterinarian. She also gave me excellent advice for a very reasonable price. I am sure when this practice started, the vets cared more about the pets they were treating vs. how much money they could make. But, like so many other vets this has changed dramatically. Perhaps they are increasing revenue to be sold. The receptionists are not friendly, even argumentative (specifically Denise) when you question a charge on a bill that the doctor stated would be less. No true customer service at all This is the second negative experience I have had with them so I will not be back. They requested I review them, I gave permission for the not so hot review to be posted online. So far no review online - it's been two weeks. One would think they would call to find out what they could to do improve based on my experience and review. I just had my seconds visit. The first visit was fine. My dog got her exam and medicine she needed to treat her stool issue. Second visit, they charged for another exam when she was only supposed to get her vaccine. I was told by the doctor at that visit that they do an exam each month. Those are $60! I wish they would have been more transparent about that from the beginning. read more

I work in the veterinary field and been in many veterinary hospitals over the years. I have to say Dr. Makowski was wonderful with my dog! She adapted to what made him comfortable and he didn't even know he was getting examined. She was patient and took the time to let my dog get to know her. You do not see this style of veterinarian often at all - when she is down on the floor at his level!! He even gave her kisses at the end. I took my 6 year old Pom there on March 21, 2017 for a routine teeth cleaning. He died in their care. Basically they said they did not know why he died and that they attempted to resuscitate him a couple of times. I was required to pay for the procedure anyway. They did cremate him and provide me with his ashes after initially requesting payment for that too or I could have taken his dead body home. I had used them before with another Pom and his teeth were successfully cleaned there without incident. I now trust no one with my current Pom who is 5 months old now. I have been unable to take him anywhere to be groomed so far as I don't trust leaving him anywhere. I have been in the room always when he has had anything done and I am scared to get him neutered because of anesthesia needing to be administered. read more

Beware their estimates and quotes and plan for at least 1.5 times as much. I've been using their services for about 3 years now and I'm finally done being ripped off. For example: we boarded for a long weekend, my pets were due vaccinations, which I agreed to along with the required visit fee. 4 weeks later, we had to board again and they wanted to schedule another visit/vaccination fee because one of my pets was due for another vaccination. How could that be? Well, they were due for an update of one of the vaccinations A WEEK after the first visit, so they didn't update that one then. So there would be another $150(ish) fee added to my bill, plus the vaccine. A separate time I was having grooming done at another location and she called to request the vaccination records be sent to her (the groomer) and was told that my dogs had never been seen there. So I called the office and was told that they had not been seen since 2015 (it was 2021 and that was untrue). The groomer canceled my appointment with her and I had to physically walk in and request my records in order to keep a copy on file to prevent the same in the future. Most recently I had grooming services done at this location (which I've had done previously, but always in conjunction with boarding, so I did not remember the cost). I called in an asked for a price for the services (which is an outside contractor) and was told $40-$50 per dog depending on weight. I have large dogs and was expecting the $50 price. Upon pick up, again, I receive a bill for $75 a dog. It seems that the staff who gave me the quote gave it incorrectly and that I "should have known" because that's what I paid last time (even though I called in and asked directly what the charges would be). I always ask for an estimate so I can know if I want to use a service and when it's constantly significantly more, it's not good business practice. Boarding services were adequate as well as veterinary services. We will be using another service in the future, likely Glade Valley Animal Hospital. I don't like leaving poor reviews, but others need to know the disorganization. read more

If i could give no stars, i would. They don't care about any of the animals they see and will rip you off with no treatment done. Have brought several animals we have rescued here on several occasions. DO NOT BUY MEDICINE HERE! They will not give you a prescription if you don't buy pet meds there, and if they do it's a miracle. We purchased a medicine that was 78$ online for 380$!!!!!! Never made that mistake again, and now will not prescribe the dog a medicine that has bad pain and our only other option is to put him down. I have so many other stories but this is the worst veterinarian i have ever been to and have rescued over 15 dogs. Stay away from this place unless you like waiting to see the vet for at least 15 -30 mins, then having a vet who literally acts terrified of your dog, and finally getting rude treatment by office staff. The office manager is inept. They boost using their online service for prescriptions but don't mention that it takes over a week not the 24 to 48 hr turnaround. Again, office manager involved. This place is like Jiffy Lube in that you go there for simple maintenance but you'd never let them replace your engine. Took my pet in for a very noticeable condition. They ordered a test, performed it and told me they needed another test, this time for more money. Performed it and told me they needed yet another test. Each test took weeks to schedule since they seem to have to bring in outside specialists for almost everything. The last test required exploratory surgery. After a few days, my pet stopped eating and moved very little. Called BV and was told that this could be related to the pain medication and that I could bring my pet to an animal emergency room at a different pet hospital since they were closing for the day. Sadly, we didn't need to make that appointment as my pet died shortly after that. The real kicker was the test that the exploratory surgery was done for was never completed. I was told, it was yet another additional cost. A week later, I was called and it was determined that I had actually paid for the test. A week later the results of the test came in and what my pet had was completely treatable. I will say everybody is extremely friendly and I'm sure this is a good place for vaccines and grooming / boarding. read more

They presented alternative treatment paths and helped me to understand the pros and cons. Used to be OK when I first took my pets there. My last experience was no emotion or empathy, but money was made extremely clear. I took my sick dog in to get checked out, within minutes notified I would owe for that visit and recommended to a specialist for tests $1k-$2k. Made an appointment for the same day, and my dog passed away 2 hours later. I got a brief "I am sorry" do you want an autopsy at $400? No one mentioned the cremation for $350. (surprise bc that's all that kept coming up was how much everything is) They called my EX who's number should have been deleted to say I owed $776. Then called me to discuss autopsy report + payment. 1 week later calls me AGAIN to ask when would I pay, can I do it right now over the phone? I said no, and the reply was "Well what exact day are you going tp pay so I can tell my manager." My dog dies unexpectedly on July 5th and instead of showing ANY sign of sympathy, all you are worried about is your money. What a shame. read more

After over 15 years of being a patient with numerous animals here, I am calling it quits. For the most part the staff is very nice and accommodating. I am confident that they can provide adequate care however, the price gouging and over charging is just unacceptable to me. McKissock is the worst, and has an attitude to go along with it. It is difficult to fill prescriptions unless you use their online pharmacy that once again is 3 times the price of other locations. I have located another clinic that can provide the same level of care for a fraction of the cost and also doesn't price gouge their clients. I am sad to be leaving after all these years but I can't condone being taken advantage of, over charged and the difficulty in obtaining my pets prescription. The older lady at the front desk was extremely rude! I was TOLD on the phone to COME IN and pick up a prescription and when I walked in she was VERY rude and unprofessional. I understand having clients wait in their car but maybe they should communicate that to clients & their employees! I've come here for over 7 years and spent a lot of time and money here! I'm extremely offended to be talked to that way when I was not made aware I needed to wait in my car! This isn't the first time I've experienced/witnessed her being rude and unprofessional to me or another customer! I hope this review helps Buckeystown realize how she treats their customers (everyone else has always been super friendly) and I hope it helps so others don't get treated the same way. I recently had to put one of my rabbits down and the staff was extremely compassionate. I had my rabbit cremated and just picked up her ashes this week. am sorry to have to write a very unpleasant experience with Buckeystown Vets. My dog Sadie required ACL surgery and had already gotten some X-rays from a different vet. The folks at BV said that their "travelling surgeon" required additional X-rays. That was another $200 plus dollars. We were told that someone would get back with us but they never did. We call after a week following the additional x-rays only to be told that the travelling vet never got back with them and will most likely not be able to perform the surgery. There is clearly something wrong with this picture and as far as I am concerned, you folks at BV owe me for the X-rays that your travelling vet never used. The staff has promised to send Sadie's records to another vet that we will be using. Of course this will have it be done manually as they apparently do not digitize records....what century are you guys living in ? This will likely require us spending additional dollars on yet another consultation I trust that they will be able to accomplish that before my dog dies of old age.. Thank you Buckeystown Vet. Very caring veterinary staff and groomers. I've been taking my 2 cats here for the last 4 years. I used to live in Frederick, but now live in NoVa and it's definitely worth the hour drive to take them somewhere that's reasonably priced and where they will get treated with care and concern. The staff is very gentle with my little guys (even my 23 pound cat!). Their grooming services are excellent (really appreciate that they can sedate my big boy so getting a haircut isn't so traumatic for him). read more

I love this practice. You don't wait long to be seen. The boarding is fantastic if you have to board your pets. I was walking our dogs to the car, and two of the vet techs who were walking dogs not only knew the names of the dogs but came over to say how much they liked the dogs. Did I mention the K-9 police board their personal dogs here? I would use these vets for our dogs' routine care except that we live in Gaithersburg. If we have to go out of town, I would not hesitate to bring the dogs here. Excellent customer service and caring! read more

Took 2 of my males for semen collection and analysis. Young vet was very rough on them, especially on younger male who had never had this experience before. The main vet was not in and when I called to speak to office manager following my appointment I was told I'd get a call back . About a month later I did receive a call from Dr Miller who offered for me to bring my males back and she'd see them. I declined her offer. Never was any offer of refunding any of the high cost of her associates poor technique. Took both boys to another practice, cost me more money and fortunately my younger is fine. I'd never recommend this practice and warn any stud owner to consider going elsewhere. read more

Well my 2nd review is just as bad. It's terrible because when I started going here with my two dogs things were a lot better - but the last year or so things have gone downhill a lot. I never really liked the way they do things through check-in. They don't take your pets immediately like they do at other places. You stand there with your dogs, cats, etc and everyone else is standing in line with you (with their dogs, cats, etc) while they have you fill out the paperwork. And if the pets need to be weighed, that's all done out in the open too. Now my dogs are not out of control. But some other peoples' pets are. And once one pet gets barky or lungey or aggressive, they all start getting that way. So there's a whole check in area full of aggressive, leash-pulling pets whose owners are trying to patiently wait for either the line to go down or for the admin to get them checked in. I'm not sure why they don't have a holding area for the pets? Or could the policy be like everywhere else we've been where you get there and they immediately find out who you are and take your pets where they need to go so you can easily and calmly get the paperwork done without everyone trying to control their animals? That part has always been pretty awful. But now it's 100 times worse because the admin staff is not only extremely slow, but they don't care. They just. don't. care. This is the 2nd time I've been in just to drop my dogs off for a grooming and the same exact thing happened. I was the only one there and I had one dog with me and one in the car. I should be able to just give my dog to them right then and there and go get the other one. But no. First I waited for someone to acknowledge I was there (keep in mind - I was the only one there and there were 4 admins up front). Then I went up and she called for a groomer to come get the dog I had with me and started with the paperwork. She didn't acknowledge me again for at least 5 minutes. I wasn't sure if the paperwork was done or if she needed to do something else or what. Usually they ask what kind of cut, etc, but she didn't ask me anything. I stood there with my dog as he sat at my feet patiently waiting for the groomer to come out. But - no groomer. In that 5 minutes someone brought a dog through the waiting area and it lunged toward my dog and barked so of course my dog lunged back and then it was a battle to try to hold him there. Still no groomer. So I looked back at the admin and she picked up the phone and called the groomer again. This time she got a person and actually told the person there were dogs here for her instead of just announcing over their intercom. But another 5 minutes passed. In this time someone brought in a dog and a cat. And it surprised my dog so he started barking and wagging his tail and getting excited, and the dog barked and lunged so my dog lunged and scratched the top of my foot with his nails. I held him back and got him to calm down and sit, but by this point I was truly aggravated. I turned back to the admin and said quite angrily "is anyone going to come and get my dog? I have another one in the car." She rolled her eyes and then asked if I wanted her to take him back to the groomer (which by the way is through a door that is about 10 feet from where I was standing). Yes. I would like that. So she took the dog I had and I went out and got the other dog out of the car. When I came back in, the admin and my first dog were gone and then the groomer had rushed out and greeted me. I could tell someone had spoken to her about making us wait because she was doing a sticky-sweet thing that I could tell was a put-on. Look - I got there a good 15 minutes before that. I had every right to be upset about the fact that I had been standing there that long anyway... but then to add insult to injury they have that weird policy of checking all the people in while they stand there with their animals barking and hissing and lunging at each other instead of taking the pets immediately and then having the owners do the rest of the check-in. It's absolutely ridiculous. On top of that, the last time I took the dogs to the groomer here, one of them came home with his foot bleeding. I don't know if it's a new groomer but I decided to give them one more chance today and if something else seemed fishy I was going to go somewhere else. Of course now I'm worried because I could tell the groomer wasn't happy with me complaining that no one had come to get my dogs. This place just isn't the same as when I started coming here 3 or 4 years ago. I will still kennel them here because they do seem like the best for that kind of thing (even though the check-in process is the same annoying procedure!) but I think after today I'm going to have to find another groomer. I just can't stand to be the only customer in the building and still wait 15 minutes for anyone to take my dog (all the while having to fight off other cats and dogs). Just a note. If your animal needs medicine BV does not want you purchasing it from anyone but them. They make it extremely difficult to get the simplest of prescriptions (heart worm meds). My dog has been taking them for 9 years and no problems. I ordered through Pet Meds in the past and it wasn't an issue. Now they are making it impossible for you to go outside of them to get this medication. Apparently they have a pet pharmacy that you can order through online. I haven't checked it yet to see how much they charge but wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be a lot more than Pet Meds. This to me is not caring for animals and it sounds like it is more about money!!!. They would rather have me not give her the heart worm medicine then to just email a prescription or deal directly with Pet Meds to get this cleared up so I can give my dog her medicine. Again, this is NOT the first time I have ordered through Pet Meds and it went smoothly before. This time BV refused to sign the authorization that Pet Meds sent. Terrible!!!!!! read more

I have gone to Buckeystown Vet Hospital for at least 10 years. I think the actual doctors are very good however it doesn't matter how good of a doctor you are if you are surrounded by support staff who are arrogant and rude. My dog was sick all last night and it is apparent she has worms. After explaining the severity of her messes and the fact that it was continious from11pm to 2:30 am, the scheduler asked me what day would I like to bring the dog in. I was like "Um today". I can honestly say I have NEVER been treated so poorly. I asked if they would keep my dog after giving her the worming medication and her response, and I quote "Why would we ever keep your dog over night?" I explained that I heard of dogs with worms staying over night to ensure the entire worm is expelled. Her response and I quote "Nope. We give you the pill and you take them home". RUDE RUDE RUDE. I know that they have a huge facility there, but I WILL NOT give them one more dollar of mine and I will tell everyone I know about my experience. I even called back to the facility to get the schedulers name so I could file a complaint. A lady name Lori gets on the phone. While I am talking her we are disconnected (not sure why). No one from the Vet Hospital calls me back. read more
