    Spicy Italian four square
    Amy L.

I was bummed to miss Buddy's on a recent trip to Detroit, but happy to discover a new location had recently opened that I could hit on an East Lansing/MSU campus visit with my kiddo. The whole place looked new and clean, and our server was great. The individual house salad serving was more than enough for the two of us, and the four-square traditional crust Spicy Italian pizza was just right. They graciously honored our request to leave sauce off my kiddo's half. To top it all off -- a Vernor's (Michigan-made ginger ale) ice cream soda. Yum. My only small complaint -- the Buddy's Old-Fashioned seemed a little off somehow. Too strong, maybe? Our server said the bartender was new, so hopefully they'll work out the kinks and hit their stride.... Overall, a great meal.

    Hair in food

Hair in food. The food already wasn't my cup of tea. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs with a side of buddy bread and a Caesar salad. The meatballs were overcooked (tasted frozen maybe), the meat sauce was a bit spicy, and the Caesar dressing was chunky. The interior is nice, with a small arcade and bar. Service was quick, and the staff are nice. As soon as I found a hair in my spaghetti, I stopped eating it and tossed it. Waste of money, especially the salad being $10.99 for a single (1-2 people). Thanks.

The pizza is good but jets is better in my opinion. The place has a 3 star average that's where I put it. Nothing special. The restaurant is brand new and is nice inside. Service was ok.

    Hawaiian

I'm surprised to see the negative reviews of this particular location. I did not have any issues with service or the food when I was here - the Hawaiian Detroit style pizza I ordered was absolutely delicious, as was the Caesar Salad I ordered. My server Jenna was absolutely wonderful - she was very sweet and made sure my experience dining here was a great one. Not sure what the deal is as to why some people don't like coming here but I certainly would eat here again next time I'm in the Lansing area.

THE FOOD WAS GOOD, reviews be misleading. Service was amazing and the food tasted great. I'd come here again. I got the mozzarella sticks too, it was amazing. Top 3 cheese stick and they gave 8. The food was gas! Buddy's is W eats

Oh, the bread. I have been dreaming about this bread ever since I had it. And I mean that literally, I was dreaming about the bread while I was actively eating it. It was THAT good. My pasta was delicious and had a nice kick to it. I knew it was supposed to be spicy, but even after reading the reviews I was still a little surprised by the heat. Thankfully, it was the good kind of spicy where you keep going back for another bite. Overall, a really nice spot with some seriously memorable bread.

Unfortunately, our dining experience was disappointing. We weren't allowed to order from the regular happy hour menu and were limited to a much more expensive fixed menu. The calamari was good, but the featured Jazzleberry cocktail tasted weak and watered down. The prosciutto and melon appetizer was served with a large piece of half-burnt toast, the melon was hard and underripe, and the prosciutto was dry and sliced so thick it was difficult to cut or eat. I asked only for a replacement piece of toast, but our server brought an entire basket of focaccia instead. Since we hadn't ordered it, we assumed it was a courtesy replacement. We were surprised to find an $8 charge for the bread on our bill. This was at least our third disappointing experience. Toscana has a lovely atmosphere and wonderful live music, but the food quality and service have consistently fallen short. I truly hope they can improve because I'd like to enjoy dining here as much as I enjoy the entertainment.

Here are all the things that went right: - we were immediately greeted by the bartender Jackson and presented menus and water and told about the featured cocktails -as we were deciding what to drink, I noticed a pretty impressive coctktail list and a list of some very good, rich red wines -the Angel's Envy Bourbon Berry Smash was delicious..spoken by someone who normally doesn't like bourbon but wanted to try an Angels Envy bourbon drink that was not too sweet. I chose the raspberry rosemary syrup as the berry of choice. My boyfriend had a well made gin and soda. -nice to see there were appetizer and entree specials. Makes you want to come back to see what will be on the specials list each week in addition to a nice well-rounded menu -Jackson helped us select among multiple good sounding entrees. As a pescatarian I wanted a seafood dish and decided on the suggested seafood risotto. My date was between a couple of fish dishes but after a discussion with the bartender and a further description he decided on the Maui Mahi with coconut risotto. We chose to split a salad rather than have an appetizer. -the meal--the salad came out on two plates so we did not need to divide the spring mixed berry and goat cheese salad. It was delicious and fresh and definitely enough for two side salads. We were also provided some warm crusty bread with olive oil and balsamic. Our entrees were of good portion size, visually appealing and HOT---not just warm---which I greatly appreciated and talked about after we left. The risotto was prepared perfectly by someone who clearly knows how to make a proper risotto--it was not gluey and set-up, but perfectly tender and creamy. The seafood was delicious. The scallops were seared nicely and not overly salty (something many restaurants don't understand is that you typically don't have to salt shellfish as it is salty/briny on its own). My boyfriend's mahi was sizable portion on top of an ever so slightly sweet and spicy coconut risotto. His was fantastic as well. We also enjoyed the sautéed zucchini that came with both..also nice and hot! -we had a delicious bottle of wine with dinner. After we paid for dinner and left with our remaining wine, we promptly came back in because of the heavy downpour of rain. We sat back down and finished our wine. The things that could be ever so slightly improved: -the lighting in the dining area is fitting of the decor and vibe of a nicer restaurant but the lighting at the bar is just too bright. Could maybe benefit from dimming them and possibly adding a few candals oe the small table/rechargeable lamps along the bar as it seemed wide enough. -the shrimp on the risotto should be two larger shrimp (8-10 size ) rather than the very small shrimp that don't seem to fit the vibe of the dish -there were only two options for dessert...maybe another one or two would be great -a little birdie told us that the restaurant will be having a happy hour menu soon (and a second location). We would LOVE for you to add some truffle fries with some sort of aioli...we can envision ourselves stopping in for those and some wine...often! Great addition to the limited higher end restaurants in the area. We look forward to many more meals there.

The server read it and took it back. My son ordered the steak and wanted mashed potatoes. Server came back and said he could not have them and recommended veggies. I ordered the Fra Diavolo which was spicy and good. My son's steak was decent but wished he could have had the mashed potatoes. We asked if he can have the sweet potatoes and she went to the manager and she came back and verified if he can have dairy. We verfied and indicated that he could have dairy. They made the sweet potatoes for him but I didn't think any dairy was in it or other allergens. As lunch was winding down we looked into dessert and asked about the vanilla ice cream (to see if he can have it as sometimes it has eggs in it). She came back and asked if he could have dairy (at this point, I answered and said, we gave you a list and it doesn't list dairy so yes he can). I was getting upset. So he was able to have ice cream. Overall, for a big party, I thought the service was not great. Then when we received the check, she listed dairy as an allergen which we never indicated he had. I'm 100% sure he could have had more options to eat. The server was told twice that he was not allergic to dairy (I get being precautious is a good thing but apologize for the mistake). I could have spoken to the manager but decided not - which I now regret. I would not go back to this place.

Toppings: 5/5 I have never seen so many topping before on a 1-topping. Americans go overboard on toppings generally anyways, so I never order more than two toppings on a pizza. But wow. Cheese: 5/5 The amount of cheese on this pizza was a double-cheese equivalent at Dominos or Pizza Hut. It wasn't fresh mozzarella (like they hopefully have on their hearth baked ones), but it was cheese galore. Sauce: 4/5 The two most important parts of a pizza is the crust and the sauce. That is what takes skill. This sauce is really quite good. Much better than you will find in any local chain like Howie's or Cottage Inn, and slightly better than Dominos or Pizza Hut. Not awesome, but good. It doesn't taste like that nasty and sugary stuff. Crust: 3.5/5 I don't go easy on crust reviews. 3.5 is actually good for America. 5/5 Is a good joint in Naples. The crust here was better than Dominos and Pizza Hut. It was somewhat light and did not get soggy. But at the same time the outer edges were compressed and not airy at all. Pizza joints should pride themselves on the crust, and not have the cheese go half an inch to the edge like this one. Anyone can throw a bunch of cheese down. Crust is what separates the truly good pizza. Overall, it's good pizza. I will be back. I can foresee them taking a lot of customers away from Cottage Inn if they were closer to the bars and had late night deals. I would like to try their hearth pizza next, to see if it comes close to a Neapolitan style.

A big group needs space and a huge menu so everyone can actually find something they want to eat. The college aged kids working the tables were running around trying their absolute best to keep up with the drink orders and the food. It took forever for anything to arrive, but honestly that part is understandable with a crowd our size. Things started getting weird when the entrees showed up before the appetizers and salads. I dug into my stuffed Chicago style pizza and noticed it was barely warm. Even stranger, it was sitting in this unbaked pan on top of some weird tray keeping it off the bottom. There was zero crusting on the pan at all, which makes no sense for a pizza that is supposed to bake for thirty minutes. It was just a lukewarm disappointment. Then the night took a massive turn for the worse. Halfway through the meal, the guy sitting right next to me jumped up because he saw a bug. He lifted his pizza up, and a live cockroach came running out across the table. One of our friends had to trap the thing under a glass. The whole table went into a frenzy, so we called for the manager. When he finally showed up, he was completely nonchalant about the fact that a live roach just crawled out of our dinner. He gave us a casual apology and walked away. After waiting around for another half hour, we spotted him just casually wiping down other tables. We had to confront him again to see what was being done, and he just brushed us off by saying the waitress would handle it. He comped a few minor things, but left almost the entire bill full. We had to push him a third time because half the table lost their appetite and refused to pay for food that came out of a roach infested kitchen. He threw a small discount at us, but still forced everyone to pay for their tabs. While we were trying to settle up and just get out of there, the staff started opening up to us. Our waitress told us she was quitting in a week because this kind of stuff happens constantly, and she was tired of dealing with the fallout. Another waiter mentioned it was only his third day on the job and he was already planning to jump ship. To top it all off, we walked past the kitchen and office area on our way out and the sheer lack of cleanliness explained everything. Unless you want a side of live pests with your lukewarm pizza, absolutely skip this place.
