I love Detroit style pizza. Every time we visit Michigan we get Detroit style pizza. Mostly from Buddy's. We love the Super 6 Mile with added Italian sausage. The crusts are Crispy and delicious. Their Antipasto Salad Is perfect with their vinaigrette dressing. We get the Family size so everyone has enough. Their classic Greek salad is great for vegetarians. Great to order multiple pizzas and salad to feed a crowd. read more

I'm sure there are tons of other spots where I could have tried Detroit Style pizza, but I was actually recommended by a family friend to try Buddy's. Stopped here on a road trip and was pleasantly surprised. Let's start off with the so-so. I had a custom Detroit Style Pizza with sausage, green peppers, mushrooms, caramelized onions, and garlic with Wisconsin brick cheese. Don't remember tasting caramelized onions now when I think about it, but no biggie. The toppings just seemed ok to me, nothing was extraordinary, toppings seemed like what some other chain pizza sports I've had. My wife had a the hoagie but substituted steak with chicken. Another one that just seemed ok. The bread was great but the chicken needed some more seasoning and the sandwich needed a sauce. Basically is a philly cheesesteak. We had horseradish on the side, but I don't think that really fits with a philly. Since it was happy hour we also got the veggie sampler. I didn't like the zucchini at all but the cauliflower and broccoli wasn't bad. Food was just ok. Now the good. The inside was sparkling clean and it didn't look like other pizza chains. My wife was also surprised and thought it looked cute. I could tell they were a little understaff as well but that didn't affect the type of the service they gave with how busy it was. If I come back I'm getting 2-3 of these for the family. Ordered a 4-square Detroit Public TV Pepperoni. Smelled great. Tasted decent. Bottom was so tough you can't cut it. Biting it hurt my teeth and the roof of my mouth. 6/10 Service- On the slow side. It was not very busy. Took very long to get items. Waitress was very pleasant. Sorry but this is the 4th time I've tried Buddy's and it's not just the new staff and unseasoned pans. We got a 6 mile pizza that does have onions... but not this many. I mean like it tasted like we got 10 times the onions as a normal topping. Here is just one bite where I pulled out the onions for the next bite. This one was unique enough as that onion was barely cooked and about an 1" or more in diameter. I love onions but come on. Who wants to eat that and kiss their wife after? Gross. Oh I wish you could give more than 5 stars! My family comes here QUITE often. Especially for the loaded fries ! like I've said before in previous reviews, I'm somewhat of a French fry connoisseur! The loaded fries have everything you would want and more, gooey cheese, crispy bacon, seasoned to perfection, dip them in the house made ranch and you have a WIN! The tenders, oh chicken tendys! We ordered to go and this was our first time at Buddy's. They do have good options for vegetarians. We got a Greektown pizza, spaghetti in marinara sauce and house salad. House salad was fine , maybe we should've tried a different one - the chickpeas did got blend with the salad , they were boiled and bland; maybe roasted might have added some flavor - but that's just how we prefer it. Greektown pizza was good, the veggies were less and way more bread for us - again our first time trying Detroit Style pizza. However, it did taste good and loved the crunch on the edges. Spaghetti with marinara was a hit! That was supposed to be a side dish but it turned out to be a star. It's simple and the sauce was really good. We have done both take-out and dine-in now. Yesterday we dined in for the first time and had a nice time! I liked that the audio from the televisions were kinda piped in through a speaker so you could actually hear what was going on. I don't see that often! We got the Greektown Pizza and it was so delicious. It had feta and red onion and tomato and spinach and a garlic parmesan sauce. It was served with Greek dressing. Be prepared to spend because prices run about $16 on average for a 4-slice pizza. The meatballs were also around $16 and came with four meatballs and four triangles of ciabatta. So if you have something to celebrate or wanna impress a client, this would be a great place to go! The service was prompt and the ambiance was inviting. read more

After reading a few reviews, I was skeptical. However, figured when in Portage Michigan....gotta try what's here. We ordered the loaded fries, chicken strips and an 8 square pizza with red pepper, sausage and red onion. First tried the chicken strips, wow! Crunchy yet juicy, delicious. Dipped them in delicious ranch, bbq and hot sauce! Wow! Fries were good dipped those in ranch too, the pizza....yum! Crispy, yet gently made with not all the heaviness some pizzas have. I also had a piña colada which I don't think had alcohol. Great service and clean, a little cold but great because it keeps insects away! All in all, if we visits again, Buddy's we will be dining at! I'm only giving it a 3 star because the pizza was decent, but the price was outrageous! $20+ for 8 square slices? $10 for "loaded" fries?? Wait: (1 of 5) Walked into the restaurant and we were seated right away. However, we sat at the table for more than 10 minutes before the wait staff arrived. Looked like very poor communication between the host seating customers and the wait staff serving us. Cleanliness: (4 of 5) The building and tables seemed to be pretty clean. Silverware wrapped in napkin. Plates stacked below the wrapped silverware. Atmosphere: (2 of 5) It was a cross between Applebee's and a pizza place/bar. Classic rock playing on the overhead speaker. We were sat in the back behind a wall and directly below a speaker so it was a little loud. Service: (1 of 5) Very poor. Waitresses walked by our table multiple times and never even looked at us. When she finally came to the table she said she didn't know that this was her table (it was literally right next to her other table). After we ordered the appetizers came to the table pretty quick and before our drinks. I'd have to say this was the worst service I've had at a restaurant in the Kalamazoo area. If I could go negative stars on this portion of the review I would. Food: (3 of 5) Drinks - Coke and Moscow Mule. My wife ordered a Coke. But the waitress kept bringing some sort of Cherry Coke. The Moscow Mule was good. Appetizer - Buddy's Wings. Crispy and flavorful! I really liked them. Should have ordered 16 vs the 8 we ordered as this was the best part of the meal. Pizza - We ordered a "Build Your Own", 8 square, sausage, green pepper and onions. For Detroit Style Pizza I gave it a 6.1 (out of 10). I think it was slightly better than Jets because it is not as greasy and the crust was more inline with regular pizza dough/crust. Price: (3 of 5) $47.14 for our meal. It seemed a bit high. However, prices have been going up recently so this might be inline with current market prices. Overall: (2 of 5) The service was poor... very poor. Of the 3 food items we had... The wings were #1, the Moscow Mule was #2 and the Pizza was #3. Maybe someday in the future I'll head back to Buddy's to give it another try. read more

We loved Buddy's Pizza when we lived in Dearborn and now that it's in Kalamazoo we are elated. After not having it for 16 years, it didn't disappoint. Amazing pizza. Had a friend tell me I HAD to try this place out. I'm so glad I agreed! Cheesiest pizza I've ever seen! I mean it just went on forever. Unfortunately due to dietary restrictions. When we first walked in the place was empty. That should have been our first clue to not go there. Buddy's Pizza is so thin for a Detroit style pizza. So disappointed on so many levels. We ordered the garlic bread with cheese, antipasto salad, and a four square pizza with Italian sausage. Our server was nice, so this review is not about her only the food. The cheese bread was ok, not amazing but not bad. It's worth about $6. The salad was decent, I didn't care for the dressing that came with it. It had kind of a sour/tang taste to it. We ordered the medium so if you do go there ( I advise you not to) it would feed about 5 people for about $13. So not a bad deal. The pizza... it was awful. Detroit style is supposed to have a buttery thick crust. This pizza did not have that. It was thin and dry. The sauce was too acidic and too sweet at the same. Not sure how that is possible, but here we are. At least they give you decent toppings but that's the only positive thing I can say about it. Overall, I am very disappointed. I don't remember them being this bad. If you want true Detroit style, head on over to Jet's Pizza or try the Motor City Pizza that you can get at the grocery store, those are ten times better. Also, as a side note, do NOT get Buddy's frozen pizza. They sell it at Fresh Thyme locally. That's a story for another time... It is way too expensive and inedible. read more

Visited here this past Sunday night, which was our first time here. The restaurant environment itself has a great feel. Very inviting, well designed, cozy place. Ordered an eight corner bbq chicken pizza, breadsticks, and chicken wings, all of which were excellent! I highly recommend each! Total came to around $40 which is not bad for the amount of food that we received. The service was fantastic as well, and we will definitely be back soon. Hands Down: THE BEST PIZZA WE'VE EVER HAD! Honestly, we used to be loyal Pizza Hut lovers....That all ended yesterday afternoon when we walked into Buddy's! Our waitress Erika was so friendly and kind. She came and checked on us regularly and promptly got us anything we requested. The front hostess staff was friendly and funny upon entry. A manager came over and asked us how we liked our food when we were finishing. The experience itself was wonderful. The food though....they seriously have outdone themselves! We started with the Buddy Bread with marinara and ranch for an appetizer and we were not disappointed! Seriously I wish I had an unlimited supply of their homemade ranch! We tried the Detroiter Pizza, one of their Signature Square Pizzas. It was dripping with cheesy goodness. But that would be okay if it were yummy GF Detroit style pizza! I pick it up and get home: there is NO sauce on my pizza! None. There definitely was suppose to be. I double checked my order and yes I had ordered a Gratiot, GF crust, regular sauce. But they forgot the sauce! So it was just cheese bread. Sad face. That moment you unknowingly order food from a "new to you" restaurant after moving to the area only a month ago ... only to find out one of the cooks is your friend! My son ordered the Meatball Hoagie and said it was "delicious and filling," while my other son ordered the Spaghetti and Meatballs, and not one bite of it was wasted. He hardly eats all of his food.
