Detroit is one of my very favorite cities in the country. It gets a bad rap, but the people are great and there is a lot going on there. However, I am not a fan of Detroit Style Pizza... at all. As I've said in many pizza reviews, I'm from the Northeast, we prefer round pizza, paper thin crust, decent amount of sauce and cheese and not too crazy on the toppings. But a friend of mine from Michigan talked me into trying this place, because they had a "thin crust" pie. So, I was in Kalamazoo recently and saw they had one of these in the neighboring town of Portage. So I decided to give it a try. The restaurant itself was beautiful. They had a friendly staff. They had a wonderful and lively bar area. However, I was fairly tired and just wanted to take the pizza back to my hotel. So, I ordered a thin crust pepperoni and roasted red pepper pizza to go. Now, when I order thin crust I'm expecting a round pizza, cut into slices (triangle slices). I was surprised to see that it was just a thinner version of Detroit Style. Nevertheless, I went in with an open mind. The pizza was good, but the sauce is definitely lacking, which is the biggest problem with that style... too much bread/crust and not enough sauce. I loved the old world pepperoni though. The cheese was brick cheese which is also the norm for that style. It wasn't my favorite pizza ever, but very decent for Detroit Style and I'd definitely eat there again. Definitely wouldn't mind watching a game at the bar, having some beer and pizza sometime in the future. If you like Detroit Style, I can tell you that this place tops the list. read more

Giving two stars only because of customer service. Ordered online for curbside pickup. Followed directions and text when we arrived. Received a text to let me know it would be brought out shortly by a set time. We waited almost ten min past that time. Went inside and our pizza was sitting in the warmer. I have been religiously coming to this place on my weekends. I follow the rule of threes, Buddy Bread, Buddy Beer, and Buddies! Best enjoy led with the power of all three B's!!! Even the water slaps! I highly recommend the Detroiter as the sauce compliments the cheese like smooth R&B and hot, passionate love making. The soundtrack in the dining room can be used for a wedding, as it perfectly reflects the ambiance Buddy himself would have wanted. The wait staff is phenomenal and I would give six stars if I could. Yum yum in our tum tums. Love Buddy's. My gpa used to take us to the original on McNichols & it's simply the best. Happy we now have Buddy's over in Kzoo. The garlic bread was floppy instead of crispy & our medium salad had a big chunk of core, but they are working w a new crew. They'll get it soon enough. 8 Lk MI pie was perfection, loaded w toppings & oh, that crispy crust. Happy to report, they have that down! They made the space their own & it is cool with some D flair. Loved the Motown playing throughout our whole meal. Our server was pretty good & the manager popped over to say thanks for coming in. I like that sort of thing :-) People want to know about covid precautions now too, so here's the scoop. Masks on everyone, servers wearing gloves, paper disposable menus, seating tables with social distance in mind, foot pull on bathroom door, & saw them sanitizing tables as soon as people left. If I could give this restaurant a 1 star rating I would. I have lived all over the world and I have never had service like this ever or a restaurant manager who is so incredibly rude, treat customers they way that the manager treated our family. We arrived to the restaurant (5 kids + 6 adults) around mid afternoon to a half empty restaurant. The college aged kids working at the front desk were the most useless hosts I have ever seen. Three of them discussed where to sit us (in a half empty restaurant!) for at least 10 minutes (please keep in mind we have 5 very hungry kids) before they advised us we would have to wait for the one other big table to leave. So we sat and waited and the kids read books. There were empty tables everywhere and the excuse was that they were short staffed and they couldn't seat us. But here is an idea. Instead of having 3 people staring at their phones and messaging people and ignoring you all while you wait with no updates, why don't you seat the customers and serve them. We ended up ordering from the bar so that when the table left we could then sit down. Again let's remember this is a pizza restaurant - how much service do you need? Water/Drinks and then bring the pizza! After a 40 minute wait with no updates we asked if we could eat the pizzas at an empty table - again we were strongly told NO. The manager then came out and started screaming at us that we did not know how restaurants worked (umm....I eat out almost every night and my brother is a chef so I have a pretty good idea) and that it did not work that we would be able to sit down in a now mostly empty restaurant because they were short staffed (whilst the 3 hosts were sniggering!). The manager yelled at the adults in front of the kids. Disgraceful. We were completely disgusted with the entire experience - we took the take away pizzas which were average at best - and had a tailgate party in the parking lot as the kids made up what our reviews should look like. They said 'no stars' which I wish was an option. Shame on you Buddys - your level of service and complete lack of care for the customer is something beyond what I have ever seen - and I live in New York! Do not go here if you actually would just like respect, never mind pizza. Do better and replace all of the front house staff - especially the manager. read more

This looks like a great place on the outside. Servers are nice but the food was so over priced for the quality and the amount. I got the Sicilian and it wasn't awful but nothing special. We spent almost 50$ between 2 personal pizzas and an appetizer that was 4 pieces of burnt bread. I had a 3$ vernors that was not refillable.. it was a can. We never complained. I have been here twice and both times the food was terrific! I sat at the bar while waiting for my take out the second time and the wait staff/bartender were friendly and super positive. You can tell they really care about doing a good job. The staff actually got along and joked and smiled with each other. Drink while waiting was tasty. This is the second Buddy's we have visited and it did not disappoint!! Such good food and service. Our waitress Kerri (sorry if I spelled that wrong) went above and beyond as she served us and other tables while also being the bartender. We ate at Buddy's Pizza in Portage, Mi. We enjoyed Detroit style pizza for the first time. We had the 6 mile pizza. Loved the buttery crisp crust topped with ham, pepperoni, green pepper, red onion and Brick cheese. The cheese had a great pull. Yum! Kerri K. Was our delightful server. She was very knowledgeable and really new the menu. And she gave us great service checking back several times to see if we needed anything and to make sure we were enjoying our pizza.
