I have to admit that the rates I got through Costco for a 3 day car rental was so attractive (9/29-10/1) and I took a chance regardless of the comments and rating. Nothing more to say, I learned my lesson. 1. My booking was to pick the car at 12:01 am and I reached the location at 11:30pm. The agent, Justin told me to wait till 12, otherwise the system will consider it as an additional day of rental which is totally understandable and I waited. 2. Checkin, walked to the parking lot and found out that I got an unclean Chevy Malibu with 35k+ miles and full of scratches. They didn't give me the inspection sheet and I assumed no need to do it at that point of time. (I learned it when I returned the car). Put my stuffs in the car and turned the ignition and found that the Tire pressure light is on. Took all my stuffs and went back to the location. When I raised my concern, Justin told me to pullover to the other side of the building and someone will fill the air. I asked another rep for a replacement car and he said the same. Got in the car again, spend another 10mins to get the air filled and I drove out a car which got different air pressures for 4 tires. 3. On my second day 9/30, I realized that the car registration was getting expired on the same day. Called Budget customer care and they told to exchange the car at any location. On 10/1 morning, I stopped at Ann Arbor location and they didn't have any cars. The rep over there told that he is so fed up with getting such beaten up cars from the DTW airport and they always do it to him. So, I ended up driving a car with an expired registration. 4. I had to refill the tire twice during my trip and I put my family's life in danger. Thanks to the reps at airport. When I returned the car, I asked for the manager (Keith) and explained my horrible experience. He was kind enough to take off $25 from my rental. (The only reason I gave an extra star here). However, it will never make up for what I and my family went through. read more

This is very slow service you'll ever see in rental company. Staff acting so slow and long line waiting for cars. Doesn't seems that anyone of the employees care about customers at all. Everything about this experience was unprofessional. We waited nearly a half hour for the shuttle only for the driver to complain about her back pain the whole way. When we arrived we stood in line for 2 hours to pick up our car. We made this reservation 3+ months ago, and even after standing in line we were told the car would still need to be cleaned. It shouldn't take longer to pick up our rental than it took us to fly here! There was no apology for the wait, or explanation of why the car wasn't ready. In addition the building was dirty with trash on the floor and no toilet paper in the women's bathroom. I have nothing positive to say about this experience. read more

The wait here was nearly as long as my flight from halfway across the country!!! Their 'systems went down', but despite getting things back up it still took 20+mins to process each customer, even if you pre-paid! Despite the excessive delays, nothing was done to compensate anyone for the hour plus waiting, and the 'apologies' were severely delayed. If a basic system crash from a thunderstorm shuts down the whole operation, it's clear their infrastructure is still stuck in the 90's. Simply a pathetically bad experience. Stay AWAY! I returned the car after driving 40 miles. I filled up at the Speedway by the airport, 1 mile away. I told the person checking me in that I filled up the car. My bill shows out 8/8 and return 8/8 on the tank. I still get billed 15.99 for fuel recovery. WTF. This is why I started using Hertz ten years ago. Paid ahead to rent a car, had the confirmation took the nearly mile long ride to the Budget/ Avis . They asked for my credit card so that they could charge a $200 security deposit. I was going to Michigan to bury my father I did not have a great deal in my account or on my other credit card, I had barely enough for the $200 but the moron tried to charge both cards TWICE for $250, which was not there. The man's supervisor came by and TOLD him it was only to be $200. Too late, was locked out on both cards. I called my bank and confirmed live that the money was there! The moron asked I had another credit card he could try ! They told me maybe I could find an ATM for cash, mind you it was already tight for gas and food money. Now I am stuck a mile from the terminal at 9pm in pitch black Romulus they will not give me the car I rented because of an incompetent employee! Would go 0 stars if I could. Rented a car from Newark because my flight was cancelled. Drive 10 hours overnight to Detroit and return the rental car at 3am. Was originally told the $200 deposit would be returned in a few days. Fast forward 3 days later and I get a message that my rental car is 3 days overdue. So I call and spend 10 minutes explaining to customer service where I dropped the car off (at their lot), what time I dropped it off, and where did I put the keys (in their overnight Dropbox). I am then told I will be transferred over to a specialist to close this out for me. The specialist Zaelia, starts off by asking how she can help me. So I now have to give her my confirmation number, name, and all the details again. She then put me on hold for 10 mins so she could "take care of this for me". Well after 10 mins of holding she comes back and says she will have to escalate this to another team and they will contact me in 5-7 business. I told her that is unacceptable, they have cameras that can show I returned the car, I shouldn't have to wait another 2 weeks to get my deposit back. She told me that is standard because there is an order it has to go in. I asked how often do they lose cars that they have a line you have to wait in to find it. While we were happy with the car and service before we returned our car, that is when this nightmare started. Be very careful not to leave anything in the car, because it will magically disappear. My husband left his Hall of fame Jacket from Florida Shuffleboard in the car at Detroit Metro, Lucas Dr. location. As soon as we got home to Florida, I check the website and the jacket was listed as found. I filled out the required forms and sent them. I get an email back that the jacket hadn't been found and when I again checked the website the and the found jacket was no longer listed. So, someone has a very nice jacket that says Northern District Shuffleboard Florida Hall of Fame Player with the name Rick on it. He worked very hard to earn the jacket and just wants it back. There's literally been this one customer standing at the counter tying up a teller for over an hour. A+ for understaffing! So today we had snow. Big surprise since it is January in Michigan. THE CAR IS A HAZARD. There was no fluid in the window washer....so...I refilled...IT DOESN'T WORK. The wipers also are way past needing replacement. See the attached photo. AND with tires that are literally at the minimum (I checked) I got the privilege of doing circles on the interstate (5 to be exact) due to a spin out. The service and wait times here are mixed - upon arrival in Detroit, I waited with a reservation for over an hour in a line of around 10 people while one customer service agent tried to get everyone their rentals. That definitely felt frustrating after a delayed flight. However, upon return of my rental, there was an extra fuel charge on my rental, even though I filled up right before returning. they should get a zero star for trying to steal from people. i rented on 12-16 to 12-19 and the pick was great, professional and pleasant staff but when returning, i stopped at the BP on the corner and refilled, and then dropped off my car, the loser checking me in lied and said i wasn't refueled but i took a photo of the gas and have a fuel receipt. when checking my email they charged me $97 for refueling!!!! watch those you drop off to and request a receipt in person bc they are shady! i learned my lesson and will never trust those doing the check in. read more

It was my first time using Budget out of DTW. The shuttle service from the airport to their facility runs often and was there immediately. It's only a short ride and next to all of the other rental car facilities. Walking into the building there wasn't much of a wait line. Unfortunately they didn't have many customer service agents working so it took some time for them to dwindle the line. They also didn't have any self service kiosks in the lobby. That would have helped immensely. Once we got up to the counter they were great and very friendly. We reviewed our reservation and were on our way without any problems. Upon returning we thought it would be easy like many other rental companies. With Budget you have to go inside to check out. Strange? Yes. This really isn't convenient for people who are in a rush. I just hope they install kiosks for speedy check in and out. I wouldn't mind using them again. I just hope the company can do something about their check in process. read more

not a fan. don't pick mystery car, even though it's cheaper you'll get a truck that costs $100 to fill the tank up. they don't have a shuttle to get you to the rental, it takes you to the airport where you have to "figure it out yourself" you don't get any money back on a day you won't be using the car and possibly charged a fee for returning it early. read more

THE BAD -- Super long line to get a car and even with several people working the counter, I had to wait 30 minutes before I spoke with anyone. -- I filled up my car with gas before returning it and the guage only showed it was 3/4 full. I thought to myself - "Maybe I didn't fill it up all the way" - and tried again only for the car to remain showing that it was only 3/4 full. On the way to the airport the guage never rose to full, so I had to explain it when dropping off the car so I wouldn't be charged. We reserved a car with Budget online weeks before our trip to Detroit. When we arrived we found that it was not the type of car we reserved and the truck that they gave us was substantially damaged. We noted the damage on the inspection form and turned it in at checkout. After we returned the truck Budget then sicced a collection agency on us to collect on the damage that had already occurred to the vehicle that we had noted in check out. This was simply nuts: how could they not have had a record of the damage to the truck BEFORE we received it? Perhaps the DTW Budget office had not informed corporate about condition of the truck and then they were doing a CYA by trying to ding us for the damage? read more

Well Detroit, it's places like this that give you a bad name. As soon as someone gets off the airport, they are ripped off and treated like garbage. My reservation was for 1 day, and yet, Budget charged me for 2. When I told the lady at the counter that my reservation was for one day, she said that as soon as the 24-hour mark hits, she automatically charges a full second day instead of using late fees. Then, when I returned the car, I filled the tank up at the BP about a half block down the road by the McDonald's. The needle was at full before I filled up, and was even higher after I put in the 3/4 of a gallon of gas (I only had the car for a day, see above!). The man at the counter said he would remove the charge from my credit card, but he just showed me a sheet showing that nothing was charged on my card. I was amazed that he was so calmly able to flat out lie to the customers right to their face. I ended up getting charged $16.48 for gas despite the fact that the gas tank was already full. If I could give negative stars to this place I would. Yep, Detroit, it really is you that is the problem, not anything else. At the very moment I got off the airplane, and then as I left, you left a nasty stench in my mind that I couldn't wait to wash off. Your city is full of liars and cheating low lifes. Ah the joys of traveling....When my bride and I arived inDetroit last weekend we were hoping to upgrade our car to a different vehicle and it's not like we haven't been down this path before. The wait wasn't bad, and please remember this name: Don Cline. Don took good care of us and got us into the car we wanted even though we were told that the car may take an hour to be ready for us. We appreciated his honesty and no sooner had we requested a different car it was ready to go, because he took care of it. Long story short we wanted a convertible, and we were going to get put in a Mustang convertible. I'm a Chevy man and belong to a Camaro Club and would probably never hear the end of it. We all had a good chuckle about this and Don put us in a Camaro Convertible SS. I have an SS, know it pretty well and have rented a convertible Camaro before from this same rental terminal. Stay away from Budget at Detroit airport (DTW)! They are represented at the Avis lot. I picked up the Avis bus and did 3 laps around the airport before being dropped at the Avis lot. When I got there, the line was outside the building. The staff at the counters were slow, grumpy and obviously overworked. A number of the counter workers would just getup and leave, or go chat with their coworkers. Poor attitudes and poor work ethics! It took me an hour-and-a-half to get my car! One of the delays was due to the folks bringing the car from the lot to the building. When I got up to the counter, I said, "I've already setup and paid for my vehicle online, can I just walk the lot and pick up my car? I don't care where it is, I have an appointment and I have to go." He told where it was I went and got it. Was out of there 5 minutes later. I asked for a non-smoking vehicle, got one that smelled like 50 people had been smoking in it. I had my car from 8/14/20 - 8/16/20. Was scheduled to return the car at 3:30 PM, my flight changed so I dropped it at 11:10 AM on the 16th. The wait to drop it off was long. Took me nearly 30 minutes to drop it off and get on the shuttle. The guy checking me in had a horrible attitude and was not helpful at all. I had a run-in and someone broke the tail light so I had to fill out a claim form. Dude was clueless. Finally got the form filled out and asked him several times if I was good to go. He said yes and handed me my copy of the claim form. I did pay for and have the Loss Damage Waiver had a receipt for that. I thought this was the end of my rental experience with Budget. Now, roll forward to yesterday, 11/29 when I got a knock on my door. It was the USPS with a certified letter. The letter said I had 3 days from the receipt of the letter to return the car. Really?! I had dropped it off 13 days before! So, I called Budget and got this guy named Abraham, not only was he difficult to understand as English is not his first language, but he had a bad attitude. I told him I don't have car and that it was returned on 8/16. He didn't believe me and said I needed to return the car or have proof. I told him he needed to look in his system for the vehicle. He found it and said I could disregard the letter. I asked him if he could send me an email stating that. He said no. I told him I wanted something in writing from Budget clearing me of responsibility for the vehicle. He said he would email me the receipt. He didn't discuss what was on it, but I was like cool and we hung up. Fast forward an hour, finally got the email receipt. It said I had returned the vehicle on 8/18/20, and was charged an additional $394 for the extra 2 days rental (late fees, rental fees, LDW fee, tax, etc.). So, what does one do when they are overcharged for something? Call back of course. Got through to Budget customer service and again got someone who could barely speak English. She was much nicer than the previous person, just difficult to understand. I told her about the car being returned on the 16th and that I had a receipt for the 16th. Took her about 30 minutes to try and confirm but she still couldn't and said I would have to talk to Budget claims since I had a receipt. I called them and they are not open on weekends. Overall, pretty miserable experience. Stay away from Budget and especially Budget and Avis at Detroit airport (DTW). I would give them 1/2 a star if I could. read more

The rental pickup at the Detroit (DTW) location of Budget Car Rental was the worst experience of my life. We waited in line for - I'm serious - 2 hr and 45 min on Sat 6/30 at 11:00 am. Four people were working the counter and judging by their performance the staffing should have been about 5 times that. They mentioned a shortage of cars. The van we paid for was not available, so we had to wait at the counter until they could call one down from a different lot and vacuum it out. I am really kicking myself for not checking reviews for this Budget location before booking it online. Please do not make the same mistake I did. Really poor service. When you know you have people waiting in the line, you need to get going. I see 3 people behind the counters, just one working, the other one is constantly on her phone and you can tell its personal and not professional. The third one is trying to impress the passengers with lame jokes, when really what they need is a car. I feel like time has stood still, feels like geography class to me. I m here returning my car from yesterday and exchanging it for a better one. The car we rented Cruize had some issue with the acceleration wherein there was some noise everytime I was accelerating. Suspensions felt like there weren't even there. I m hoping I get a better one now that I will be traveling to Niagara from here and back. Least professional budget I've experienced. Traveling for business often and for years we've used budget. The car we rented reeked of marijuana and had marijuana roll ups left under the seat. We travel for dairy work and so the floors were left with sort on them( no more so then usual). More than two weeks later they charged us $470 for a cleaning fee. That is above their maximum standard. They would not take our dispute into consideration. That is the last time we will give them our business!!! read more

I had the worst experience dealing with this company. This was my first and last time ever using them. What should have been a simple transaction turned into days of me having to argue with customer service reps about money that was taken from my credit card unauthorized! I prepaid for my rental a week before picking it up. I chose the mystery car option. Total was $111.14. Fast forward I returned the car,with a full tank of gas under the mileage. A few days after returning home I noticed that my card was charged $184.18 So immediately I called budget to see why I was charged any additional money. The first individual I spoke with named Oscar Id # 38466 was extremely rude. I'm sure quality control can listen in on that call and hear him telling me that I could not speak to a supervisor and that I could just hang up if I wanted to speak to someone else. Amongst other things. On my Third call I spoke with BRENDA ID # 38136 she was also ridiculously rude and incompetent. Overall I'd suggest staying far away from this company. I have yet to be issued a refund for what they have found in their investigation to be a legitimate reason. I will be sticking to ENTERPRISE! read more

This is for the Avis-Budget combined rental service at Detroit Metro Airport. First, the shuttle drivers back and forth were fantastic. The man at the actual counter was irritated from the get-go. I reserved and PRE-PAID for a mid-size car. When we arrived at the counter we were told that there were none available and the agent would have to search and it would be a wait. Then we were offered a truck, we refused because it wouldn't work for us. Then we were offered a Toyota Forerunner SUV with no upgrade charges. We accepted because we were not able to wait any longer. IT WAS TOO BIG!! Hard to drive, drifted, hard to brake and unwieldy steering. It was a terrible upgrade when all we wanted was a normal mid-size car. We thought we had a bad experience, but judging by these reviews it has been par for the course. Our car had a STRONG smell of marijuana, we reported the smell and went on our way because we were in a hurry. After a while we started searching the car for weed because the smell only intensified, this is what we found: A scale with weed residue, two lighters, and a bottle of Franks Red Hot. We still haven't found the weed, but judging by the intense smell there has to be some hidden somewhere. We called Budget to get a new car and they said there is nothing they can do. Let's hope we don't get pulled over and arrested. Update: our family members also rented from Budget and their car also smells like weed. This has been the worst car rental experience I have ever had. I very often go to Detroit Michigan with my wife and get a rental every time I go. But this time with Budget Car Rentals it has been the worst. I received the car extremely dirty and the smell of throw up all inside it. On the way to my hotel from the airport the car stopped on me and my wife twice. I was extremely worried so I called customer service and they gave me a location to go pick another one up. I went there the next day and the clerk there was very rude shouting at me "we don't have a car here for you go to a different location" multiple times. I called customer service again and they did not care about what happened, they just sent to another location. I went there and they too said the same thing. So, I called customer service again for the third time and they finally told me that they don't have anything available for me. My entire trip was ruined because I had to use Uber nearly the entire time I am in Detroit. Extremely disappointed at what happened and I do not recommend anyone to rent a car from Budget. We reserved a car months in advance. Arrived at the rental building at DTW via shuttle bus (nice, capable driver) at 4:00pm on a Thursday and it took until 5:00pm to make it through the line and drive away in a dirty car. Some effort had been made to clean it but it was dirty inside and out and the windscreen had smears inside that I had to clean off. The car performed fine. When trying to return the car at 5:45am on the following Tuesday the return gate was locked and a security guard told us that Budget returns were being taken in by Avis. We made it fo the Avis intake lot and left the car (no attendant - can only hope that this was the right thing to do and works our) and caught the shuttle to the terminal (again, the driver was great). Except for the drivers there was a big lack of attention to the customer. Not just me but thirty or so people ahead of me in line. I will not rent from Budget at DTW again. read more

Horrible service. The shuttle left us standing in sub-freezing wind for over 20 minutes. I tried to call Budget from curbside at DTW to let them know we were waiting there, but the listed number connected us to some helpless call center that certainly wasn't local, and ultimately instructed me to go back inside to baggage claim to call from the "Courtesy Phone." Why? I was already on a phone! I called the number listed! We were on the frickin' phone! And now it's a courtesy to give us the run-around? That was useless, so we waited longer in waning faith, directly under the Budget sign in the sub-freezing wind, wondering if the Budget shuttle would ever come around. Then finally an Avis shuttle came, said they would pick up Budget customers, but delivered us to Avis "Because Budget closes at midnight." After dillydallying at the customer pickup curb for 8 minutes, the shuttle driver drove slower than Kamala Harris on dope, and got us to Avis at.....12:03! Seriously? It sure seemed intentional! Thanks, Avis! Then the Avis rep took literally 20 minutes just to get the Budget computer system working so he could pull up our reservation while dozens of groups of customers behind us got their cars and were on their way quickly. Upon return of the car two days later, at about 5:30 pm, nobody received the rental return and we had to guess what to do with the car based on minimal signage and previous rental car experience with companies who actually had real live humans. Humans that do their jobs: what a concept! Budget needs to improve their archaic, lackadaisical, incommodiuous and troubled systems at DTW. Budget should be downright embarrassed. (And so should Avis). I reported the experience to Budget, but have received no response; proof that they really don't care. I wish I could give 0 stars. We picked the truck up, it was dirty, outside had paint chips all over. Then best of all, we got a 7 sweater because we need the space. Here's the back seatbelt. We've been on the phone with them for an hour getting limited to no help. Transferred to 5 different people. And we leave tonight for our trip.. the ball was dropped at so many levels. For paying almost $1,000 you'd expect better. Horrible company. We went through other competitive companies prior and will be going back to them in the future.
