I don't write many of these 1 star reviews but WOW this car rental experience certainly warrants it. Car rentals in general are a PAIN but this has to be the WORST experience we've ever had. Upon arrival in Hawaii, we were both hungry and ready to find some good food after picking up our rental. It was a poor first impression of Hawaii - the line was exceptionally long (and after reading some of the reviews, this seems to be a normal occurrence!). We waited for almost an hour in line (and the customer service was seriously lacking) in the hot and humid airport. If you are claustrophobic, you are going to be very stressed out. Patience was definitely running thin with the crowd. When we finally got our vehicle we thought it would be smooth sailing from there. Unfortunately, about 2 hours later, while driving to our hotel on the highway in rush hour traffic, the tire pressure light came on and cars were honking at us. It took me a minute to realize that one of the car tires was about to blow out. Perhaps we could've checked the car better when we received it, but isn't it the job the rental company to make sure the cars are in safe driving condition?!? It was completely terrifying but luckily we were able to exit the highway into a church parking lot. Budget does provide road side service but it was going to take them several hours to assist us. It was mid afternoon in 90 heat...we were going to pass out standing around. Luckily a nice gentleman offered his assistance to help us put on the spare tire. We ended up returning to the airport again to exchange the vehicle. I will note that the folks working in car return were much friendlier. We finally picked up our second rental - it was not as nice as the first one and didn't feel super clean either. However, at that point, we checked out the car thoroughly to make sure it looked safe to drive this time and we honestly just wanted to be on our way. This was not at all how we wanted to spend our first day of our Hawaiian vacation. I feel like Budget is large enough company that they need to find a way to better staff the location or streamline the process better. There are so many folks (and many families with young children) flying into Hawaii and this kind of customer service just is unacceptable. If we visit Hawaii again, we will absolutely not rent from Budget and take our business elsewhere. Saving a few bucks was not worth the stress and headache. read more

Literally the worst part of my trip was dealing with Budget! We waited for an hour to get through the line downstairs to pay, and just when we thought that we would have a car, we were sent upstairs to wait ANOTHER hour to get our vehicle. It was the most absurd experience I have ever endured in my life. After a 9 hour flight alone with my 4 year old, and waiting two hours for my car, I finally burst into tears and begged them for my car, and they gave it to me. This Budget is located directly across the airport which was convenient for picking up and dropping off my rental. I rented a full size car for the week via Costco and scored a deal. Cost was $192.00 for the week and I'm receiving a $20.00 Costco card via the mail. The Chrysler 300 was in great condition and had just over 25k miles. Service from the employees was solid but the counter person did try to up sell me on insurance and navigation. I would definitely rent again from this Budget in the future. read more

Our flight arrived around noon on Friday. We had to wait 1h and a half for the reservation we already had!! It sucked. The staff was very kind - sadly there were only like 3 staff members servicing a line that went way out the door. It didn't get any better while I was there either. Returning the car at the end of my trip was a breeze. Allow some extra time as you have to take a frequent bus back to the main terminal. I still stand by my previous review - I've now chalked up about 13 rentals with Budget in Honolulu (2 trips a year) and I still never have any problems. Again - Here's a few helpful tips: 1. Sign up for the FASTBREAK service on the Budget website - you can basically show up at the counter, show your ID and Credit Card and be on your way to snorkeling while everyone else waits. 2. If you have a Costco card, be sure to get the discount code from the Costco website under TRAVEL. This will save you an additional 10% as well as a decent discount. 3. Have your traveling companion wait for the luggage while you sneak across to the car rental. Get your keys and meet your companion back at the terminal. You've beat the crowd on are on you way! Also- ask for an upgrade if you are a Fastbreak member. We rent a cheaper model and they usually upgrade us upon arrival. I always ASK. Fastbreak is KEY !!! Horrible customer service. Currently on my way back to Budget with a tow truck. My car stalled several times as I was driving around with my family. I was fortunately able to drive them back to our hotel so they could still somewhat enjoy their day while I'm going to see about getting a replacement. While I understand that sometimes cars malfunction, trying to contact the Budget office was impossible. The number to talk to an actual person forwarded over to a voicemail every time I tried to call today. When I was able to talk to someone, they were just someone at a call center that couldn't help me. I ended up calling Roadside Assistance and they were able to tow me back. read more

I've never written a negative review on Yelp or anywhere else... until now. As others have said, the Honolulu Airport office and Budget are running an awful business. We were hit with a $250 cleaning fee for "excessive sand" a week after we returned the car. When I dropped it off, the attendant didn't say anything. She walked around the car, looked inside, checked the mileage and said, "Aloha." So when we were hit with cleaning fee we were floored. My wife made multiple calls to Budget customer service and they sent us back pictures to *prove* that it was excessive sand. Was there more sand than I would like, sure? But excessive sand for a car on an island? That's a bit of a stretch. We've left that much sand in almost every rental car in Hawaii and never been charged. Even if it needed to be vacuumed, we're talking 15 min of work by a minimum wage employee. Charge me $25, and I'm probably ok with it. But $250?! After multiple calls they offered to reduce the fee to $150. My wife refused on principle and asked to speak to a manager. They said the only people who *might* be able to reduce (actually refund!) the charge was a manager at the Honolulu Airport. I made 3 calls and left 3 messages, and no one returned my call. I called corporate customer service one more time, and the rep actually tried to tell me that I would always be charged with a cleaning fee if the car wasn't brought back exactly how it was when I picked it up. That may be what's in the contract, but no rental car company has ever held me to that standard. Even so, we *always* take out the trash, but there's almost always some sand or dirt in the car. She tried to tell me that the reason they charge so much is because they have to "take it out of the fleet" for cleaning when there is so much sand. That's completely untrue. They always clean the car before another person rents it, and if they don't customers will usually refuse to take it. At most, it took an extra 20 min of cleaning. Which is nothing compared to the 2 hrs we spent in line trying to rent our car when we arrived in Honolulu -- even though we had a reservation. After a contentious conversation (which I don't like to do, but she really got under my skin), the customer service rep offered to refund me $150 of the $250 they already charged me. I told her that it was still unacceptable to be charged $100 for this, and if she reduced it to $50 I'd accept that. She told me she couldn't do that, and so I asked to talk to her supervisor. She told me she could "offer" to put me in contact with a supervisor but they wouldn't call for 24-48 hrs -- which I'm certain will never happen. The fact that the Budget is willing to "reduce the cleaning fee" by more than 50% is a clear signal that this is basically highway robbery. They know it doesn't cost them much (if anything) to clean the sand out of the car, and they train their customer service reps to try and convince you that they deserve these charges. After all, "it's in the contract." Everyone knows that the cleanliness of a car is a very gray area, so this is simply the case of a company trying to find new forms of revenue in a shady way. You would think that convenience is worth it, enough to go with a company with low ratings, but it sucks when there is a problem and the company isn't willing to work with you, to compensate you for wasting your time! Budget is on-site at the airport, the primary reason I rented from them. I got permission to teach from here and intended to be here a month. But then my district decided not to teach in-person which meant I could stay in Hawaii longer, way safer here than California! I started calling Budget a few days before the last day of my rental contract, no answer, ever. Goes to voicemail, so I leave a message saying that I would like to extend my contract. Meanwhile, I try different ways, I try to extend it online and through their voice service. Nope, can't do it either way, says I need to call the branch, which never picks up, so it's a Catch 22. I call and leave messages almost daily until it's already 2 days past when I'm supposed to return the rental. For convenience, I want to extend so I don't need to drive all the way to the airport from the North Shore. Finally, the LIVE person tells me that I can't extend because I've had the car for a month and would need to start a new contract. Ok, nowhere was that information anywhere or else I would've just returned the car on time and gotten a new rental from a different company! From the lady, I got what I would pay for the extra days I had it: $1,475, an extra $145, reasonable. But the final cost ended up being $1,595! So I paid $265 for 3 days, not cool. No matter how much I argued that if someone had picked up or responded to any one of my voicemails, they were not willing to knock that down at all. So safe yourself the trouble. Don't rent here. Go with a company that has better customer service, even if it's a short shuttle ride away. read more

Unfortunately, the mystery car that my wife and I prepaid for 3 months prior to our arrival to Hawaii had issues with the sun roof top. When we picked up our vehicle and began to drive to our hotel ( Moana Surfrider) the sun roof started to fall apart. The side windows came undone and almost caused an accident on the freeway. This car was not only a hazard to us but others on the road. The sun roof would not retract to a complete close causing for it to open on its own while driving at speeds of 35 MPH. We only drove the vehicle 134 miles due to this un safe issue. My wife and I missed on many scheduled trips. I called customer service to address this concern but after many attempts and several hours of being on hold, we gave up. Needless to say WE WILL NEVER RENT another vehicle from budget again!!. A total of $510 was prepaid to only drive around Waikiki to and from the airport. We will be contacting customer service once again to get a resolution. Additionally, a few days after I submitted my review. I received an email from Budget (Kaimi A.) apologizing for the incident and that I would receive a partial refund....it's been over 4 months and nothing. Their service sucks-plan ahead for your return flight because you may have to wait (like us) for 30 minutes just to get a lift with your luggage to the airport. They take the courtesy vans to the Avis counter (sister rental counter) BEFORE coming over to Budget. We had to wait for 3 buses because on a busy Saturday the bus would arrive and say something like "I have room for 2" or "I can only take 3 more" and we were a group of 9. Also they seemed to have some tech issues at this location...when we checked in mid-day on a Wednesday, their computer link to the credit card company clearinghouse was not working so they had to call for authorization on every credit card which greatly extended the amount of time to get people their cars. When we came back on Saturday night to drop off the car, one of the check-in people wasn't able to print off receipts. They need to get some stuff straightened out at this location. read more

I wish I could give zero stars! When we arrived at Budget (HNL airport), the line was extraordinarily LONG!! Waited in line for over an hour to reach the counter! First car (Nissan Altima) had a problem with its key fob. After a few days, the fob failed to unlock the door and trunk unless I was right next to the car. But even the trunk failed to open with the fob close by and I had to open it from inside. Also, our hotel valet notified me that the vehicle failed to start unless the key fob was right next to the ignition; not in your pocket or own center console. And I later noticed it getting worse as the day wore-on, so I decided to swap it for another vehicle. And forget about calling for customer support over the phone...the endless re-routes or failed transfers that went no where. Really? I gave up after 20-30 minutes on the phone just trying to reach a human being and just drove to the airport. When we returned the car, we waited for almost an hour as 1 person was helping Avis and Budget customers (???). The second vehicle (Chevy Malibu) was returned the very next day because the engine was revving unusually high and not changing gears as expected. We did not trust the condition of the car for long rides so we returned it the next day. Luckily, the agent gave us an upgrade as I pleaded that I did not want to waste another 2 hours a day bringing back cars! It was such an inconvenience at the start of our vacation and for another 2 days to swap cars. I will NEVER rent from Budget from this point forward. read more

NOT WORTH YOUR MONEY! They are understaffed & the staffed didn't explain to use at the end that we needed to bring the car back with a full tank. This was our first time renting a car & did not know they would charge you extra for gas. We would have gotten gas outside but they ended up charging us $97 & our gas tank was only half way??? I don't get why the base charge is so expensive. IF THEY WOULD HAVE TOLD ME BEFORE I LEFT ABOUT IT I WOULD HAVE GONE TO COSTCO GAS INSTEAD. We wasted $115 total from gas +taxes. I called to see if I could appeal or get a lower fee that was a bit Jorje reasonable (mind you this was maybe a half cup of sand in the car). 5 min tops to vacuum. I was told they would look into it. Honolulu location..The heavy set lady behind the counter with dark bangs that covered her eyes was really rude and could not care less about helping us. Guessing she wasn't wearing a name tag because she really did not care to be there. She took forever, we were there either in line or with her for over an hour. I'd rather pay extra next time and get better service and shorter lines from the other car rental companies. The car was also filthy when we opened it. The outside was ok, but inside looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a long long time. It wasn't worth going back inside and waiting in a long line again tho. read more

Believe EVERYTHING you read about this location. BEWARE: The Mystery vehicle is ALWAYS the very old Ford Mustang. I believe the reason is...They have them in their selection but b/c they are truly only two seaters that guzzle gas...(15 miles to the gallon at best) they hide them behind that mystery ruse to get them rented. Most families on vacation in Hawaii don't need a car like this. And once you rent it you are STUCK. They will tell you they are sold out. They also don't clean any of their cars...nope...they get them checked back in and are rented out immediately (see pictures). I have been trying to contact them for 1 hour 20 mins. to get them to clean the vehicle. HILARIOUS that they stick a sanitized sticker on the rearview of every car. This car was so dirty when I climbed out of it I felt dirty. My hands had a gummy sticky feel...and there were several long blonde hairs all over the car to include stuck in the air vents. The car is totally black inside so it is easy to see the dirt. This car is aged and banged up (see pictures). PLEASE take pictures...if you don't you are subject to them blaming you. They just hand you a key and tell you to go to the garage and find your vehicle. I arrived in beautiful Honolulu and was in great spirits! We go through the check in process and were directed to the "pick up" area on the 4th floor. I said hello and gave the lady my information and she indicated she would call me when our Jeep was ready. After more than an hour waiting and have a dozen or more people check in....like I did, they all had their vehicles and were gone. The lady finally call me and said she had a vehicle but it's gray and if I didn't want it..."She will give it to someone else." I was like, of course I'll take it as my color was listed as gray on my ticket. Poor service. I had reservations for a rental car, however when I arrived at the counter I was told they had no cars to rent. They were sold out. How inconvenient at 12:30 am in the morning. There was at least 6 people being told to go to another company. So we were told to come back around 8:00 am. When we went back they had a lot full of cars. Shortly upon arrival to the Budget Rental car service desk, I was offered a JEEP instead of the sedan I originally booked (she called it an upgrade). When I changed my mind and said I didn't want the Jeep after all, nor did I want the effortless gas option of $95 (which she said would only be about $75), I was just left standing there for over 12 minutes by the (she) service agent. At which point I had to ask another service agent (him) to check if my transaction was completed or not?! Not only did the 1st original service agent (she) not even bother to tell me that my transaction was complete, she also did not tell me where I was supposed to pick up the vehicle from. I was really lost and confused! I walked around, asked 2 other rental car services where was I supposed to go and searched the vehicle garage (with all my luggage) for 42 minutes before I FINALLY found the parking spot where the vehicle was parked. This was the worst experience I have ever had renting a vehicle and it really started my vacation off horribly. I don't think I will be renting from this (Honolulu Airport) Budget location again due to this experience and horrible customer service. Update: Budget charged me 308$ for towing their car that didn't have a spare tire. On top of that I had to pay to fix the flat tire that probably had a nail in it from long before I rented it. I was just lucky enough that it went flat while I had it. I was also lucky enough to be stranded for 14 hours because Budget didn't have any way to pick me up with their 24 hour roadside assistance. Figured I might as well right a review on this particular Budget since I've been waiting at the "FastBreak" counter for 45 mins and counting. This is the second time I have the same experience at budget so I really don't know why I gave this location another shot. The employees were neither courteous nor rude. I really don't care either way I just want to get what I came for with minimal hassle. Apparently that's not possible here or at the regular counter downstairs. When I walked by, there were at least 50+ people waiting in line--all looking as miserable as can be. The best part about FastBreak is once you get to the agent said person doesn't hand you the keys and contract. For some odd reason, BRAC was the cheapest online for the weekend I booked (Sat. 6/30/12 for 2 days.) Normally I rent through Enterprise or Alamo. Prepaid online to get a better deal. Pickup at the HNL inter island terminal was fast & courteous. Check-in agent was pleasant and tried to upsell us a convertible Camaro, but we didn't go for it. There was a minute tax prompting the agent to collect from me even if I prepaid. He removed it without me asking. Got into a 2-door Jeep which was less than a subcompact for some reason. The Jeep definitely smelled like a rental. 3 downfalls: Gas pedal was super had to press, the plastic windows & canvas roof calls out to thieves (luckily nothing happened,) and manual door locks. Ended up being a great little SUV to zip around the island in because of it's short length. Returning was easy, quick & convenient. Would definitely rent here more often if the prices were more naturally competitive! read more

I booked a rental car through USAA and Budget was the company. It was $90 for 2 days including tax. There was no line when I got there. Smooth transaction. Of course they would try to talk you into upgrading and getting insurance through them and all that. Just say no! They were friendly. Make sure to check your vehicle for scratches and dents because the car I got had huge dents and scratches but they never mentioned on the paperwork. Smooth return too. read more

I don't even know where to start. First off, I want to say that the customer service at this place is a complete joke. They are not only very rude, but they don't seem to care to understand the customers opinion at all. My husband and I had booked a rental car 3 months in advanced. We were told we were able to pay the security deposit along with the rental fee on a DEBIT CARD. We called 3 times in advance to make sure, so things like this didn't happen, and we were told after a 6 hour flight, we weren't able to do it. The guy we spoke to, his name was 'Matty', told us that we weren't able to pay for it on a debit. After arguing back and forth, he finally took our card. He then ran the card without telling us and told us that it had 'declined'. That was not possible because there's just no way. We told him if we could have him run it again and he told us, "the rule for budget is we cannot run the car twice. This goes for every other car rental". Are you serious?? We left very upset, I checked the bank account shortly and they had charged us $590.72 in my bank account! I went up to the front desk and asked why it took my money out and all he could tell me was, "he has no idea what I'm talking about." Not only did we not get a rental car that day, we also lost about $600 from our account. This is ridiculous. Don't rent from budget! Lines are long. It's the longest line you see when you arrive. Maybe 50 people or more in line waiting for a car when i arrived at 11am. Every other car rental companies next to budget had no lines. I waited outside for 10 to 15 minutes in line when I finally got to step inside the door. I actually saw a sign that said they have a fastbreak counter upstairs for the fastbreak members. I wish they would have put that sign outside on the window so we could see it clearly I could have saved some time. I instantly went upstairs to find the counter and I got my car keys to the rental in 2 minutes. So fast. I'm glad I didn't have to wait for 3 hours like every one else. Thank you for having a fastbreak service. But y'all need to advertise it better for the long long long lines waiting outside so people know that they can go directly to the booth upstairs. read more

I went to visit my daughter in December to find she had no car available for use. I called around and Budget had "best," or so I thought rates. You won't find a car for $6.95 or $10.95 a day there. They also pull a charge here and there for everything. The staff member was really unpleasant. Then when I dropped off the car I accidentally took the keys with me. I came back as soon as possible and the car had been moved so I felt ok to know they had another set. Apparently, they weren't. I paid over $300 for the mistake, which I could ill-afford. I rented a vehicle at Dulles International on the evening of 30 September. Upon going to the kiosk, it took over an hour to speak with the representative. I flew in from Hawaii and, after a long 20 hours plus of flying, was grateful to finally get a vehicle. I advised the lady that I needed the vehicle for 9 days and would return it on 8 October in the morning because my flight leaves out at 1230 from dulles airport. She advised me that she would document an AM return. I returned the vehicle the morning of 8 October to dulles. When my payment went, though, there was a $299 charge for taking the vehicle back to where I rented it. Apparently, I was supposed to return it to Washington International. I called budget 4 times with no results. I was never credited with my money. If I was advised to return to Washington, I would have done so. However, I was never advised. I will never rent from Budget again. read more

I WAS satisfied until the final day of my vacation when I realized that the employee that I made the reservation with LIED to me multiple times. The first lie was that I was signing for the Car rental when in reality he had me signing for the $30/ Day for the Loss Damage Waiver, which I declined when asked if i wanted it. Yet he still put it on the rental and TRICKED me into signing for it by telling me it was for the car rental. So here I am looking at the receipt on the final day of my trip realizing i will be paying an extra $100+ than I thought because of this manipulative tactic. By the time I realized this mistake it was too late to do anything about it, I should have looked at the receipt before leaving but I put too much Faith in the employee AND your company. Lie number 2 involved the pre-paid fuel plan. Originally I was told that the pre pay would cost be more than $4 per gallon for the pre pay plan. I declined. THEN he told me the other options were to fill it myself before returning OR bring it back and Budget would fill the tank and that I would ONLY be charged for the fuel needed to fill it rather than the entire tank. Of course once I return the car I am told there is no such plan and that I was being charged for the FULL Tank, despite there being at least half a tank left. I tried to express my dissatisfaction to another employee who either did not understand or did not care about my situation. The person who rented the car to me was named Scotty. I don't believe this was mistake because I made it very clear when asked that I DID NOT want the Loss Damage Waiver and he clearly said to me that with the option I chose that I WOULD NOT be charged for a full tank. At this point I would NEVER recommend Budget rentals or use the service again. Your employee took advantage of my trust in the company and trust that he would give me accurate information. It's sad to read all the negative comments on this account! Very few good ones... I'm writing looking into a rental....but what grieves me is the attitude of the employees. Yes tourist are at the mercy of these companies...but employees AND management need to remember the people who rent are putting into their paychecks! Rudeness reflects on future business going elsewhere...and remember you are the beginning and ending of what their experiencing on our islands and our people...more Aloha needed! If your job is not a happy one....leave and find something that'll put that Aloha back into you...not worth all that unhappiness, company business and upsetting others! Management needs upkeep... Shared office with Avis. Avis had maybe 1 or 2 customers and Budget had an entire line of 30 plus renters. Whole bunch of people in line, 9 or 10 customer service counters but only 2 or 3 open. Took a horribly long time just to get up to the counter. I ordered "Toyota Camry or similar" and was told they don't even carry Toyota's in their fleet. False advertising for sure!!! Thats not all....get up to the 4th level to get the car. They have a whole bunch of people waiting in the waiting area with seats and all.....not enough rental cars. Avis, on the other hand, had an entire parking lot full of cars and no customers. Budget had a whole bunch of customers and no cars. As they were checked in and run through the car wash, they were brought to the pick up area. Cars were a little beat up. People for sure busted up the bumper area trying to get their luggage in the trunk. I was thinking that they should have been upgrading customers with the cars they did have or something just to get them into their rental cars and out of the airport. Too many people waiting. Too long of a wait. A month ago we used Thrifty and they were awesome. Didn't think there would be this much of a difference. Will not use Budget again!!!!! and now that i am typing this review, i saw all the previous reviews. i should have checked the reviews BEFORE I made my reservation!!!
