I came to retrieve a reserved vehicle. We entered and was greated. The paperwork occured and instructions for vehicle pick up was given. We checked Two(2) vehicles. Most of the the fleet were filthy on the outside. The inside was filthy as well. After debating on going back the counter, we took the keys back. We were told the car wash was down. But when the vehicle came back from being "cleaned" in which they washed the outside #but the car wash was down so they said. But they never cleaned the inside. Needed a car for a bit of driving during the week that my wife and I stayed near Myrtle Beach, SC. As usual, checked Costco's travel site and the best deal was for Budget's Intermediate car. Everything turned out OK. It looks like prices have returned to pre-Covid levels, with a week rental quoted for $272.67 for a Saturday to Saturday rental at RDU via Costco. The nice thing about renting a car through Costco is that they don't require pre-payment resulting in no cancellation fee if plans change (another benefit is automatically free secondary driver). We were able to enter my Fastbreak number, which allowed us to have our car already prepared, letting us skip the possible line. However, because my wife's info was not entered as a secondary driver, I went to the counter to get that added. That's when the counter agent told me that Budget allows automatic secondary drivers if a spouse and that I didn't need to stand in line since my car had already been reserved under by Fast Break number. Looking at other reviews for this place (and confirmed by the agent), lines can be VERY long at this location. In terms of getting to/from the rental location, it's not ideal: taking a dedicated shuttle devoted to Avis/Budget from the baggage claim area of the airport. You have to know that Avis and Budget are the same company, since once an Avis branded bus was there. This is old school, showing that each rental agency has to take take care of everything itself. The journey was more than 10 minutes long, so not particularly quick and not walkable. More modern systems will have one large generic shuttle running from the airport to the shared rental center, benefiting all renters. The best being able to take a airport train, which the newest airports have. We ended up getting a Mazda CX-30, which was perfect for the two of us. It was a newer model, with keyless entry and push button ignition. Because it was new, it had Car Play but only through a direct wire (not bluetooth). There was no cigarette lighter charging port, but instead only two USB-C ports (not the typical -A). This meant having to find a store that sold the C to A adapter, to make our navigation work. North Carolina doesn't have that many toll-roads so a transponder was not in the car. Dropping the car off was consistent to what we were expecting, considering how we had picked it up. You need to follow the signs for Budget, go through multiple tiger teeth barriers, park your car as directed by the attendant, and then wait under the hot sun until it's your turn. This took a while, and no receipt was given at this location. One was emailed to me soon after, but found out that the charge was about twenty more than the quoted price, with no explanation why. Will need to follow up on that, contacting Costco Travel first (one small disadvantage of not prepaying first). read more

Rented a car in VT to return here at RDU. The vehicle was dirty with stains from beverages, long hairs throughout out the van. I brought this to the counter agents attention at BTV and he said I don't have any other vans to give you. I told them to notate the agreement which he claim he did. Speaking of agreement I was told to take a photo of the rental agreement since he cannot give me one. I asked for it to be emailed and told only if I was a reward member. So my wife and I wiped off the spill stains and hairs from the door, middle arm rest, steering wheel and seats. The rest of the seats were stowed since we needed the space. I returned it to the RDU airport and explained to the woman about my service and she apologized. One lady walked the exterior and the other looked in the vehicle at the mileage and gas levels. I asked if it was all set she said yes I will email you a receipt. 6 days, yes you read it correctly, 6 days later I get an invoice for excessive cleaning of the vehicle in the tune of $250! I will attach a photo of the mat that has dirt on it, possible pebbles who knows but I was charged an insane amount of money to vacuum the vehicle out. I was never told this when I returned the vehicle that it had to be spot free. Sorry I drove through rain my whole trip down from the north I'm shocked they didn't say the outside had water stains. I tracked in pebbles or maybe grass and am I expected to clean that out? I didn't see it on my rental contract because I was never given one! What I suspect is happening is I booked this thru a third party site aka Priceline so I got a discounted rate from their daily rate. So to make up for that they whacked me a trumped up excessive cleaning fee of $250. Now mind you after I left that vehicle and my rental contract was closed out would expect the vehicle was in the condition they expected it to be in. But 6 days later you slap on a fee? Well I've locked my credit card for that rental before they had a chance to process the charge. I've also let budget know this and I refuse to pay this bogus fee. They said it's valid and they won't refund. It's fine it's not on the card nor will it. If it does I will dispute the charge and if that doesn't work I will continue with legal counsel. I've rented vehicles for many years and never had this issue before. Guess travel is down and using Priceline upset them. I know I should've paid the rate I had with Hertz since I have elite status with them but the wife said let's save us some money. Who's to say when this happened since it wasn't addressed with me at the time of drop off. What a scam budget is running. Next step is better business bureau. read more

This is a review of the Cary Budget location on Maynard Rd, but they do not have their own page on yelp so hopefully this will still help warn people away. I made a reservation for a car over a month and a half in advance. When I arrived at the pickup location, several minutes ahead of my 12pm noon pickup time, I was told there were no cars available and my only option was to wait for an undetermined amount of time - "hopefully within an hour or so." I watched multiple customers return cars, and had the staff at this location tell me I couldn't rent them because there were "other people ahead of me," despite there being no one else present, or because it wasn't the same class of car that I had booked. Even the manager was working, and told me he "did not like this back and forth" when I politely asked him to explain to me why there were no cars when I had made a reservation. I waited for an hour and a half for a car to be returned and the staff were not only unhelpful during this time, but rude and hostile to me for even asking why there were no cars or for how much longer I would have to wait. Finally, I spoke with my family and changed my travel plans, and asked the manager to please cancel my reservation so I would not be charged a no-show fee. He assured me I would not be charged since I didn't pre-pay, but here I am being charged a fee. I will never be using Budget again. read more

Looking at the previous reviews, there are many reasons for the negative reviews. I will add another one. First we asked for a compact car and got a Dodge Charger. All good right? Well not really because we noticed the check engine light was on after about 30 mins. So we took it back and they gave us a Nissan Murano. Once again the check engine light comes on but at this point we were an hour away. Then we thought to check the gas cap because when it's loose sometimes that is the cause. Turns out there is no gas cap at all! It was missing. We told them and they acted like they had no idea what was going on. We ended up having to buy one and never got reimbursed. They gave me a car that had been in an accident and the bumper was hanging off... then I wanted to return it 30 Min later and tried to charge me $600 for 30 min, which jumped the overall price to $974 for 2 days and your useless customer service Couldn't fix it over the phone. Absolutely unacceptable experience at Budget. I booked a premium car for $429. When I arrived with my elderly parents, I had my digital driver's license (official from my DMV) but not the physical copy. The agent was immediately rude, dismissive, and talked down to me. When my father, who has a strong accent and sometimes needs time to find his words, tried to rent the car, this agent kept interrupting and cutting us off--three times in less than a minute. When I asked him to let us speak, he refused to help us any further, refused to call a manager, and flat-out said he wasn't going to help. He showed no patience, no respect, and treated my elderly father with utter disregard. It was insulting and dehumanizing. On top of that, they tried to overcharge us--$600+ for a downgraded car, even after a $100 credit, which made no sense. It felt like a bait-and-switch to avoid honoring an Expedia booking. We left and went to Enterprise, where they treated us with respect, accepted my digital license, and gave us a better car for $385. Budget has no problem mistreating elderly customers, overcharging, and being flat-out rude. The bad reviews are well-earned. Only thing redeeming about my experience was that at least the staff were friendly, despite being utterly clueless about mostly everything. From the get go I knew it was going to be rough as I overheard one of the people at the counter tell a customer "oh yea it's an auto fob but with these new cars it's a new feature, it can't just be in the car, you have to hold the fob up to the start button and then press it..." Wrong, that is if the fob battery is low/dead. Just straight up misinformation going on. Then the line is moving oh so slowly. I'm a little reassured though given I've done everything in advance, reservation, payment, etc, so it should be fairly straightforward. But oh was I wrong I get to the counter and she starts going through policies and how I won't be able to do certain things. I tell her I already payed a fee to allow me to do that, which she should've seen. She then states but oh, that fee is per day so I'm going to have to pay. I stare for a second and then reply my rental is quite literally for under a day. This back and forth about things keeps going about other things as well where they are either uninformed or just not checking the information, and I, the customer, am having to inform them about their own policies and everything I've already done in advance. Finally they hand me some keys and I go to the lot to find the car, only to find that the front bumper is falling off. Somebody ran over a curb and reversed out. Now I could easily fix this, just pop it back in place (which I did in the end) but I want to ensure that it is documented in case they try to charge me when I return the car and I want to get my $250 deposit back. I go inside, and I have to wait so long in line again. When I finally get up to the counter, I informed them to which they respond "oh, no" She brushed me off and says it should be fine but I insist for some kind of documentation, i'm not asking for a new car, as I am already super delayed due to their sluggishness, and I also recognize that the damage is not critical. The representative next to mine overhears, looks over and says "oh yeah, we're supposed to fill out a slip for this." It is documented and I finally get back to the car for a second time now. I turn on the car and the first thing that I see is a giant alert, saying that a service is due on this car and that the oil needs to be changed now. At this point, I'm extremely frustrated and I just decide to go along on my journey, even though this is a ridiculous thing to happen. Just overall horrible service, cars are not maintained, information is unknown, and the staff are utterly clueless and slow Once the rental was over I was also supposed to get a gift card through the Amazon link, which is advertised on their own website. I try calling them as I never received it and they just never pick up. Finally get the larger customer service line on the phone and the first person doesn't even know about the Amazon program and the policies, I am having to inform them again of their own policies advertised in their own website. Nothing happens so I call back and luckily this new person does know what he is taking about, what I am referring to, instantly recognizes the error, and begins the process to fix it, but I guess we will see in 1-3 days if it is actually fixed. read more

Was greeted upon arrival with an insane line with no directions - I asked around hoping that many people were waiting to get their car after checking in (which is the case sometimes but there was so instruction) but no, it was one line to both check in and receive your car keys for two car rental brands. Waited here for over hour which is the longest I've EVER waited for a car. Even with online pre check in it didn't make a difference. Reserved a car with Budget today (8/15/25) at RDU and after waiting more than 30 minutes for a shuttle, I gave up and rented from Alamo. Two Budget shuttles came in those 30 minutes, but the first shuttle took one passenger from the 10 waiting. Fifteen minutes later another shuttle came by and took three customers. In the meantime, four empty Hertz shuttles stopped and three Enterprise shuttles came by. Pathetic customer service. Budget shuttle driver clearly didn't give a sh*t. No local phone number. They never get it right. We have rented from Budget at RDU too many times. Rarely does "Fast Track" come through which translates to a long and ever so slow line at the counter. Never do we get the vehicle we reserve (once we watched as a couple drove off from our preassigned location with our preassigned car). On my most recent trip to NC, I opted to rent a car. When I got off my flight, I easily found the shuttle to the Budget / Avis rental car area to pick up the SUV that I had rented online a few weeks prior. The line to pick up the cars was rather long, and I waited about 40 minutes to get to an agent. During this time, I noticed that 3 people left to get their cars only to come back to say when they arrived at the car that another customer was also told to pick up that car. I made a mental note and hoped that would not happen to me as I was rather hungry and approaching hangry in this line. When I got to the agent, he was super nice. I will say that the person who helped me was extremely personable, I just believe Budget does not have proper systems to equip their staff for any sort of success, hence the one star. While looking up my reservation, the agent's computer crashed three times. He then had to manually input my reservation details on paper and after about 15 minutes sent me on my way. When I get to my car, another couple was loading in their luggage. So I returned, got another SUV and went on my way. I don't understand how a rental car place can have an issue sending multiple people to the same car, but I hope that they are able to fix that process as it is rather frustrating from a customer perspective. Traveled to Raleigh on Oct 5 2023, had to fight our way on to the third Avis/Budget bus to get to the rental car lot where we were greeted with a 2.5 hour wait to rent a car. We had relatives in the area that rescued us after 2 hours. According to the Avis bus driver its always like this but we have plenty of cars so no worry. Spent a lit of money with Avis the last couple if months, I'm done with them. Hope they're happy with understaffing the Raleigh airport location. It was not a fun experience. I arrived exhausted after 2 layovers and waited in line for what I felt was excessive amount of time due to lack of desk employees. One of the two was constantly interrupted by previous clients who either had reservations and showed up to find they didn't have their reserved van for a family of 6 available and other clients whose cars had issues. The foreign man on the phone kept misunderstanding my reservation numbers and I had to repeat my name and numbers multiple times. Still couldnt find my account so then the key number. Finally after about 10min he found it and put me on hold to find out what time first shuttle to airport leaves. Got back on after a few min on hold to aay they begin shuttle at 4am. So I returned the car the night before and ordered an uber to pick me up tp take me back to my hotel. The man at drop off told me theyre open 24hours and could have taken me in ahuttle anytile. Unsure who is right but it was just very poor communication. The man on customer service would not allow me to speak directly with the Budget counter at the Raleigh airport which would have cleared a lot of this up and saved me $40 in uber back and forth to airport. I dont think Ill ever chance using Budget again. And especially not out of Raleigh airport. Worst rental car experience of my life. This Budget in particular lets broken cars off the lot without regard to safety or convenience. I made it 7.6 miles before stopping for food post-flight, only for the car to have no battery charge. Made it 14 minutes into the drive, yet it took them 6 HOURS to get roadside assistance, for which they tried to charge $218. It would have been a hellish drive with how loud the car was, which we realized during said 6 hour wait was due to the plastic window siding which was falling off the car. The second car we received came with all tires at 39 psi except for the front right, which was at 24 psi and I had to pay myself to fill. I was hopeful this would resolve the wheel alignment issue which had the car driving straight while the wheel was tilted at an angle greater than 10 degrees. Awful driving, awful customer service, awful cars. I will never rent from Budget again, and this location in particular should be ashamed. read more

Friendly staff at the front desk and nice shuttle drivers but it says on the website that this is a Fastbreak location, and they even have a Fastbreak board out front, but as a Fastbreak renter, I still had to wait in line 20 minutes to get my car. Then the computers weren't working great so it took even longer to get the car. It boggles my mind that with Zipcar, I can just walk up to a car, swipe my card and "boop"...just like that get in and drive away. Budget has had all my details on file for over 15 years so why do I have to answer the same questions over and over again (especially when I answered them when I made the reservation online). And like other Budget locations, you get to hear the gentle rhythm of dot matrix printers as they print out your agreements. Scammers! We arrived early in the morning and all the cars in line (that were already dropped off) were running with no one in them which I knew was suspect. Sure enough, when I got my receipt they charged me for fuel and fuel charge fee. We literally filled up the tank at the gas station right down the street! $11 fuel charge and gas, it was $22.88 total. That doesn't sound like much but they are stealing from the customer if they are running cars so the gas is lower and they can charge me for gas. Unbelievable! I rented the cheapest small compact car on Expedia for this location. I made a mistake with booking the car and told them I'd be picking it up at noon when my flight was actually arriving at 8AM. I tried calling Expedia and they said the change can only be made with the rental company. I tried calling this location and the number goes into a general Budget line. Based on the reviews I thought this was going to be an utter disaster... My flight landed. The Budget shuttle arrived within 15 minutes and got us to the rental office quickly. Upon arrival there were three employees standing around doing absolutely nothing as the line grew... Eventually a woman who was pleasant assisted me and thankfully everything ended up being fine! We got our keys to a newer model Kia Forte quickly. It took me a few minutes to realize the e-brake was halfway down causing an alarm to go off and the car to drive really slow. Oops! I'm not used to using an e-brake, ever. The car was clean and speedy. I fell in love with the Apple Carplay feature and actually bought it for my car at home. Returning the car was no problem. Understaffed. Only two reps staffed that afternoon with long line. We picked up our first car but it had a terrible smoke smell. We exchanged for another car. Everything was fine until we hit the highway. The car made a series of loud sounds when braked. We tried to call to pre-arrange a car before driving 30 minutes back to the airport. We tried calling numerous time to no avail. We kept getting the recording. We went back the next day and exchanged for the "smoke smell" car. The drivers and rental agents are all friendly and you can tell they know what they're working with. My first car was an old Civic that smell like cigarettes and had a crack windshield, who would rent a car in that condition!? After going back in to exchange the car I was giving an upgrade but with less than a third of oil in the engine!! I took in and I'm in it, if it burns, it burns.
