Unacceptable experience with Budget. I was given a car I didn't reserve, and it had obvious pre-existing damage (cracked windshield) that wasn't properly documented. Budget later tried to charge me for that damage. After I disputed it, customer service acknowledged "discrepancies" tied to the Bozeman location and confirmed I would not be charged. Despite that, they charged my credit card anyway. This goes beyond a simple mistake--it shows a serious lack of internal control and accountability. I had to spend additional time fixing a charge that should never have been made in the first place. I will not rent from Budget again. This wasn't my worst budget rental pickup experience ever, but not my best either. Will start with the two staff members working were courteous and working very hard. The drawback is they were the only ones for a line of like 20 people, and given the nature of car rentals each person takes 5-10 mins. I ended up waiting 35-40 mins after a late flight and it set us back from getting on to our two hour drive. There was in fact NO fast break or Avis preferred line, although I saw a sign for one (so having that status didn't help me this time). The car pickup lot was a bit weird too, but had enough signs we were able to get out without much trouble (couldn't find an elevator though? I ended up leaving my mom with the bags and going up via the stairs). Despite this experience I would still rent from Avis/budget again :) but wish the process had been a little faster - again though, this had nothing to do with the actual service. If I could give a less than one star I would. I left a valuable pair of binoculars in a compartment in my rental car when I dropped it off at 6:30 PM Sunday, June 21. I realized it early the next morning and went to the Budget counter at the airport at 8:30 AM on Monday, June 22. I was told by the person at the counter the she could not help me as she was the only one at the counter. When pressed she gave me a form to fill out and said she would "maybe look for it at 3:00 PM." I almost started to cry - surely they could look up the car I left it in and trace the car. But no. Then the experience really deconstructed as I tried calling the general lost and found of Budget and was directed to their website (no live person) where I was to fill out a form - well there was no forms linked for the state of Montana. So I could not do that. Then I called the general customer service number for Budget and I got an official complaint case number. However, I was told to write Budget and refer to the case number and someone would help me. The person then gave me an email address which was clearly not correct (it ended in .com and had no @ sign). Then when pressed they gave me another email address which had the code of another country on it. Finally I googled where to email - and when emailing got into a circle again where I was told to fill out a form on the website (can't no forms for Montana) OR I could visit the budget counter where I rented the car. I have been renting cars for personal and business use for over 20 years. Nothing--nothing--comes close to the surreal incompetence and outright indifference we experienced tonight at Avis/Budget at Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport. I prepaid over $2,100 for this rental months in advance. Not "reserved," not "held," not "pending"--paid. When our inbound flight was delayed by four hours, I arrived at the counter to be informed, along with an entire plane full of equally stunned customers, that Avis/Budget would not be renting us cars tonight. Were they out of cars? No. There were plenty of cars sitting outside said the clerk. So what was the problem? Avis/Budget had oversold their reservations, and the decision had been made by this franchise owner that anyone whose flight was delayed was simply out of luck. Those cars? "Reserved for other people." Which people? When are they arriving? No answer. Is there a law that says reservations must be canceled after a two-hour delay? No. Why do you ask for flight numbers if you don't honor reservations when flights are delayed? No answer. Why can't you rent the cars that are physically on your lot to the people who already paid for them? Because, according to the clerk, "the owners decided." In fact--and this is not an exaggeration--the clerk told us there was a whiteboard in the back office that read: "Not even Jesus is getting a car tonight." Charming. So there we were: families, kids, tired travelers, stranded at night in Montana, left to fend for ourselves because Avis/Budget intentionally oversold their fleet. Every other rental agency was sold out. The only cars anyone could find elsewhere were Toyota Corollas--two-wheel-drive sedans--while it was actively dumping snow, with Big Sky over an hour away through a narrow canyon pass at night. Let's be clear: putting people in that situation is not just bad customer service--it's reckless. If someone had been injured attempting that drive in an inappropriate vehicle, Avis/Budget would absolutely share responsibility. To top it off, the clerk refused to give his name, fully aware that what he was being instructed to do was wrong. I don't blame him. I blame a company and a franchisee who has clearly decided profit matters more than honoring paid commitments or basic human decency. Hertz, by contrast, saved the day, somehow finding our family a small SUV that could safely get us where we needed to go. They earned a customer for life. Avis/Budget lost one forever. We've tolerated minor issues with Avis/Budget in the past--dirty cars, doors that don't quite close--because the rates were cheap. Lesson learned. Cheap rates aren't cheap when you're abandoned at night in winter with your family. Warning to future travelers: Avoid Avis/Budget at all costs. Your "reservation" means nothing. Your prepayment means nothing. If anything goes wrong--even something completely out of your control--you may find yourself literally left out in the cold. Pay more. Rent from Hertz or Enterprise. Or roll the dice with Avis/Budget and hope your flight is perfectly on time--because apparently that's the only contract they believe in. read more

We rented an SUV through Costco at this location. When we arrived on 9/06 around noon, there were at least 100 people in line with maybe 4 agents. It took over an hour to get to the counter, and once there, the agent tried to convince us to take a huge SUV gas guzzler when it was just the 2 of us. I showed him what I'd reserved and he ended up getting us. Jeep Grand Cherokee. It was a great car, but it was dirty and the windows were smeared and filthy. In short, if you rent a car from them, please expect the extra charge with the amount of at least one more day. Want your money back? Please expect endless back-and-forth, lots of angry arguments and a huge waste of time. After renting car from Budget twice, I figured out that this is how they handle things and how they make money. If you have a choice, rent the car early and avoid them to save your time and good mood. Here's the detail: I have rented cars from various companies over the years, but this was by far the worst experience I've ever had. 1. Dashboard Warning Light at Pickup Immediately upon picking up the vehicle, the dashboard displayed a "Maintenance Required" warning. I contacted customer service for clarification, but the representative was extremely impatient. He abruptly ended the call after stating, "If you feel uncomfortable driving it, go back to exchange the car. Even if you've only driven it for a minute or two, refuel it before returning it." This lack of courtesy and assistance was shocking. 2. Wasted Time and Lack of Support I wasted at least an hour running back and forth between the rental counter and the parking lot trying to resolve the issue and arrange an exchange. Not only was this frustrating and exhausting, but the support I received was nonexistent. Eventually, someone from Budget in the parking lot told me, "They just forgot to turn off the maintenance light. I promise you it will be fine," and manually reset it. 3. Warning Light Returned - Unsafe Driving Conditions Unfortunately, just 30 minutes into my drive, the maintenance light came on again. This made the entire journey stressful and uncomfortable, as I was constantly worried about the car's reliability. When I returned the vehicle and raised the issue again, the representative at the counter dismissed my concerns, saying, "We have too many cars to rent--some problems are normal. You're not liable." I certainly know I'm not liable, but it's deeply concerning that vehicle safety is taken so lightly. Saying "it's normal to have some problems" is unacceptable--what about your customers' safety? 4. Overcharged Due to Staff Negligence Although I returned the car on time and within business hours, no one was present in the parking lot to process the return. I confirmed online that the location was still open. When I spoke to someone at the counter, they assured me there would be no issues. However, I later received a receipt showing that the car was scanned at 4:00 a.m. the next day and was marked as returned late--resulting in an extra charge of $217, which is over 30% more than my original rental cost. This is completely unacceptable and feels like a dishonest practice. 5. Poor Customer Service and Mishandled Dispute I called the customer service line hoping to resolve this, and the person said she could investigate the matter. Then she ended the call. It was so irresponsible and intolerable. I called again, and later, customer service emailed me saying that I was supposed to return the car at 3:30 p.m., so it was totally fine to charge me an extra day since I returned it at 5:00 p.m.--even though I'm 100% sure I had adjusted the return time to 5:00 p.m. in the system, and there was no additional cost shown at all. Also, I picked up the car at 4:33 p.m. and wasted more than an hour running back and forth between the counter, the parking lot, and customer service simply because of the "maintenance required" light. In summary, this experience with Budget has been deeply frustrating--from the poorly maintained vehicle and dismissive customer service to being wrongly overcharged. I expect a full review of this situation and a refund for the unjustified late return fee. I also hope your company seriously reconsiders how it handles vehicle safety and customer support. read more

These guys have me faulty and dangerous car. 20 mins after my pick up I see maintenance due code. Next day I saw more error code - tire leaking air. I had to lose 2-3 to come back out of yellow strone West gate and fill the air. So every day of my 4 night stay the rear back tire would lose about 12-15 PSI pressure. I kept on filling air 2-3 times a day and pray that the car doesn't give up inside the yellowstone park. Also the car was unclean from inside. Food droppings, liquid stains and dust was found all over the insides. To add salt to injury they charged me an additional day at a bloated day rate while I returned the car -2.5 hours before due. They never provided any receipt but just deducted from my card. I called Costco member services few days after when I noticed that my card had a big deduction from budget and they(Costco) emailed me a receipt. 100% fraudulent car rental business they are running. They know that tourists come from far and away and they all may not complain and fight against their fraudulent practices. They are taking advantage of unsuspecting customers by providing them faulty and dirty cars and then overcharge them without even providing a receipt. If I can I'll give 0 star. We picked up the car at Jackson Hole, found the tank was empty, reported, and the front desk hand-written crossed the fule tank, added "EMPTY 92396" and signed. When we returned the car at Bozeman, we showed the receipt, but still charged for the fuel service. We asked for a solution, and they told me Bozeman Budget and Jackson Hole Budget are independent stores and I should call Jackson Hole Budget for a solution. even worse, the guy said "anyone can write something on the reciept"???!!!!! Prepaid budget 996.57 in March of 2023 for a June 30 to July 8th 2023 rental. Receipt stated 1200 miles free, 20 cents additional miles. I turned in car 1 day early and Bozeman Montana Budget stated they would reimburse me a 1 day charge. Got the bill. Budget charged me for driving 3,584 miles and 1 additional day charge. WTF!!! We drove no more than 800 miles the entire trip. Bozeman to Yellowstone 3 times and nowhere else. 84 miles 1 way to Yellowstone. Let's say 100 miles at Yellowstone. That's 810 miles. Charged me close to $700.00 on top of what I prepaid. Called and called and called, finally get someone they take my name, email, confirmation number. Then hang up on me. I'm appalled. We came to Yellowstone for vacation and received the rental optimiscally. The car was very dirty looking at it initially, but that didn't matter. 2 days in our car started to overheat. We were still 30 miles out in the middle of a blizzard and if it wasn't for the snow and downhill, we would have been stranded with no cell service. We barely, and I mean barely, made it to the edge of West yellowstone, parked and then had to buy our own coolant with our own money. The roadside service was useless. Apparently Budget doesn't do a routine check on their coolant levels as well as battery levels, because shortly after, our key fob died. They suggested we get our car towed to the nearest budget 88 miles away. The other ran out of rentals. We're now stranded in our home because of their negligence. 2 days worth of plans are now canceled! The car and even the budget service was not helpful and reliable. They kept trying to reroute us. Pick/up drop/off Bozeman airport Approximately 3 minutes after returning our rental car at the Bozeman airport on the morning of July 29th, I realized that I had left my wallet under the front passenger seat. My husband ran out back out to grab it, but the attendant said the car was already on the way to the Budget shop and we would have to speak to the desk clerk. No attempt was made by the attendant to get the driver to come back even though the driver couldn't have even been out of the parking lot yet. Poor customer service/experience. We go downstairs to talk to the desk clerk who was also equally unhelpful. He gave us a form to fill out and said "he would get to it when he could" We are from out of town and getting ready to fly out. We asked if he could call over to the shop, and he repeated again he would get to it when he could. Again, your company could have had rave reviews for excellent service if he simply called the shop and had the driver turn around or bring the wallet back. Poor customer service/experience. As of 36 hours later, we have not received a call or my wallet. My husband has made several attempts to call the lost and found option, however it just says there is a problem and hangs up. He is now on the phone with the 3rd representative who has told us to call the lost and found line and claim they can't do anything to help us. Last call with supervisor Michelle who states "we" have to call back tomorrow because the Boseman office is closed and they can't do that for us. Continues poor customer service/experience It is absolutely ridiculous that customer service did not resolve this yesterday, when it would have only taken a few minutes. UPDATE: The regional manager contacted me and he was extremely nice. The company reimbursed me for $803 charged over the fully prepaid rental fee. They believe it was some weird system glitch. ORIGINAL: BE AWARE OF THE SCAM!!!! First of all, the location is great and the local team at Bozeman is very helpful! Two minor issues: our car did not have an operations manual with it nor it had a scraper for snow, so we had to buy one as Montana gets a lot of snow and our car was completely covered every day. The issue is with the National office that is running a scam. I rented Standard Elite SUV on January 12, 2021. I prepaid the whole rental amount of $1,168.14 consisting of: Base Rate: $936.32 Rental Options: $60.00 Protections/Coverages: $0.00 Surcharges/Fees: $131.07 Concession Recovery Fee (10%): $100.67 Customer Facility Charge 5.00/day: $20.00 Energy Recovery Fee .60/day: $2.40 Vehicle License Fee 2.00/day: $8.00 Taxes: $ 40.75 When I picked up my car at Bozeman airport, it was an easy process. However, the car did not come with the ski rack for which I paid $60, so I expected the $60 to be reimbursed back to my card. My rental agreement states that, although I repaid, there will be a $250 hold at the time of rental, which I was expecting. However, the hold amount on my credit card at the time of rental was $803.29. I immediately contacted Bozeman location and asked them why my hold amount was so large (larger than the contract indicated). The young lady who answered the phone told me she did not know and that I should contact the national office about all billing inquiries. I just returned my rental and Budget is actually charged me $803.29 in addition to the fully paid rental. When I called billing at Budget and talked to Mark, he indicated that there was a modification to my reservation on February 13 (the rental pick up date), which changed my fee and I lost my promotional rate. When I asked him to show me proof who modified my rental and why, he said it was not possible to do. He asked me to send the original reservation email to budget for further investigation. Not even 1 star is deserved. We reserved two large capacity vans prior to arrival. Upon arrival, no vans available We rolled out in 4 different vehicles to accommodate our large group. The 2nd day of our trip, driving in Yellowstone along the river and steep grades, our tire went flat. We were being watched over as it went flat pulling into a visitor's center. We changed into the spare. Upon inspection, the flat tire had heavily worn tread, metal showing through. Checking on the other 3 tires, they were also in poor and unsafe condition. My whole family, my whole heart, was in that car. What could've happened still haunts me. And before you think I'm being dramatic, see tire photos below. Any business that would put a customer in such an unsafe situation-not worth any stars. Budget the corporate took excellent care of us, trading out our vehicle. However, if this business has 1 star on average, and folks (as we chatted with others) said "oh don't use them!" Then someone at corporate is asleep at the wheel. There was a big crowd of customers at Budget when we arrived. One of the staff member was taking time explaining the policy, fuel surcharge, etc, while I was wondering oh my, this will take long. I am sure she was genuinely an honest person and knows when she puts bread on her table at home, she earned it honestly and I really really appreciate that. When it was my turn, the manager (I think) who helped me with the paperwork, was quick and asked the most basic questions and wrapped up my contract in as little time as possible, again an honest gentleman true to his job and doing the right thing. Even though we thought he was grumpy, he too knows how to treat customers fairly and honestly. Both these individuals were best at their jobs and I definitely will go back to Budget/ Avis for my next rental as they do not lie or withhold additional fee information. I was actually returning a Hertz rental and picking up this one as a one-way rental with drop off elsewhere. Hertz was trying to charge me in excess of $500 for similar rental, whereas Budget had it reasonably priced and open in their surcharges. The Hertz at Bozeman is operated by a local franchisee owner, is full of cunning agents, who are sly, coy and dissimulative in communicating the hidden fees. Was told when we left Spokane that there would be a lot attendant at a minimum. We mentioned at the time that we thought they didn't open till 6am. This is a concern because the budget charges for fuel from the start. You show your receipt at drop off and they take the charge off. ($34). Unfortunately with nobody around we are unable to show the fuel receipt. This may be more of a Spokane issue than BZN but nonetheless nobody is here. Also want to mention that the return parking lot had a few lights out and the ones that are lit are not very bright. It makes for a dark walk at 5am. read more

Although the car was small, the service was great and the return couldn't have been easier. We rented a Mitsubishi here at the airport for a five-day period. The car was ready upon arrival and we drove it all over Gallatin County without any issues. That's what you REALLY want - no issues. The car was pretty crappy, but the price was good and I don't hold that against Budget - I would never own one of these. Another person at the family get-together we were attending rented a micro-Chevy. OMG, I didn't know that they rented cars this small in America. That one came from Hertz and it was half the size of our Mitsubishi. I would definitely rent from Budget again, based on my experience this last week. read more

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!!! Had a delayed flight which had us miss our connected flight. When we realized we had to stay overnight in Salt Lake City and wouldn't be picking up our PRE-PAID Budget rental car, we called the phone number on my reservation to let them know we wouldn't be picking up the car until the next morning. They told me not to worry, Budget holds the car for 24 hours. Again, IT WAS ALREADY PAID IN FULL! When we got to the Bozeman airport the following morning, we were told by the nasty, nasty manager - Matthew Belt - we "missed the 2 hour window for pick up so we rented your car to someone else. There are no cars available for me either." I was completely spoken down to and when I showed him my reservation with the notes that I called Budget, spoke with Alex, and he told me is wasn't a problem. He looked at the paper, semi-threw it back and me and told me "Well then, go call Alex to get a car because you're not getting one here" and turned his back and walked away!!!! WHAT??? How dare you speak to any customer like that! There were about 80-100 in line behind me, 17 of which had the same thing said and done to them by this horrible person!!! People came up to me in the airport saying how sorry they were as they heard him speak so disrespectfully to me and the other families. We had a home closing we needed to get to, another couple had a wedding i 2 hours and this man didn't give a lick of concern or compassion. I am still trying to get a hold of ANYONE at Budget to let them know how this horrible employee is jeopardizing their business. They are not concerned either, saying the locations are franchised and sometimes they don't abide to the home office restrictions!!! Asked to speak with management (again not a huge deal to wait 15minutes) BUT as the manager (light haired overweight white guy about 5'10"-6'). walked up he took off his name tag and was clearly irate, he proceeded to cuss and call my fiancé and I all sorts of names. F*** you guys I don't give a F*** what you say Get the F**** out of here The guy wouldn't calm down enough to even listen to what the issue was, he was riled up and saying obscenities from the beginning and when I finally got him calmed down enough to talk about the issue he instantly became enraged AGAIN to the point we left because I felt the situation was becoming unsafe. Zero customer service and absolutely no way of getting ahold of anyone who can actually help. My daughter accidentally left her Apple Watch in the car at the Gallatin/Yellowstone Airport. The second we realized it was gone I filled out an online report and began tracked it. Called it. Text it. Pinged it. Turned lost mode on. That night it was still at the airport. Next morning it was clearly ON THE MOVE as I could visible see it moving from the airport via the "Find" feature. It was either not found when cleaning and re-rented to an unknowing customer or stolen. Was basically told it's not their problem and if I wanted the watch back I would have to travel the 900 miles away to talk to someone and "What do you want me to do about it? I'm just someone who works in a call center in Mexico." Will absolutely NEVER rent from them again. My daughter is so so sad. read more

Returning a car here was such a nightmare! You park in an offsite lot, that is dark and scary and have to haul all your luggage through a construction site about half a mile to the airport. It was -11 and snowing while doing this. Then I got to the counter and no one was there...who knows what I'll be charged for my rental. read more

2/15/2020 experience: DO NOT RENT through Budget or Avis at the Bozeman airport (they are combined) - they intentionally overbook their inventory and then notify you when you arrive that you no longer have a car available. They give you NO alternatives or options - you just have no car. If you've pre-paid, they tell you to go back and negotiate a refund with Priceline (for example, who are notoriously difficult with $0 balance pre-paid cars). And then good luck going next door to one of the other car rental companies who gouge you with walk-up rates (Hertz was charging $500/day for a large SUV walk-up rate that night). Avis Budget at the Bozeman airport is HORRIBLE. read more
