I had placed a reservation 3 months in advanced for a Standard SUV (aka Ford Flex). I called 2 days before, and was told "yes, we have plenty of AWD ones for you to pick up on Sunday" I arrive, and I'm told my "Dodge Journey" is available. I asked if it was AWD, and she said, oh it is front wheel drive, it should be fine. (as it is snowing) I asked if there was an AWD drive available, and she said there wasn't one available... it wasn't until I specifically asked if I could go down a class in vehicle to get an AWD. We rented an SUV and chose Avis First for our trip to Kauai. The Avis First option was awful and waited over 40 minutes for our car. We followed the instructions on the app for First pick up but apparently the app did not update properly so we sat and waited. Called Avis and they were clueless and could not transfer me or get a message to the Avis counter for us. We were on our way to walk to the Avis counter with large amounts of luggage when the app finally updated to say our car was on its way, so we went back to the pick up spot and waited some more. Our car was not an SUV and our luggage almost did not fit, had luggage on our laps and floorboards. The car was a Mazda and I had to spend 10 days holding the back door open for my daughter each time she got in and out so the car next to us did not get dinged. The back door needs to open into the spot next to it in order for an 80lbs girl could get in or out. Crazy! The car drove awful and we all decided we would never buy a Mazda. Taking the car back was easier and they did meet us at the curb in a timely manner. I was taking out the little trash we had when the gal said that was ok because it was part of the Avis First rental so I stopped. There was sand in the trunk of which I was told that was ok too. Unfortunately for us that was not ok and we were charged $250 for cleaning. Speaking with customer service was very frustrating because the call center was very loud so you are hearing other CS reps talking as well as the "I don't care attitude". We will never be renting from them again as the communication with respect to expectations was the worst and we did not get anything remotely close to an SUV and out another $250. read more

If you want to survive, do not rent from them. On August 25th, I booked a rental car through an agent over the phone and specifically requested a smaller vehicle multiple times. Despite this, upon arrival at BZN Airport, I was handed a large SUV ("Previous Veh": 56030052). The agent insisted it was the only option available. This forced me to cancel my plans for the following day and drive 1.5 hours to West Yellowstone Airport to exchange the vehicle and add my friend to the rental. What followed was a chain of unacceptable failures: First car: flat tire. Second car: filthy and completely unacceptable. Third car: usable, but provided with only ¾ of a tank of gas (immediately reported to Doug). The most alarming failure, however, was Avis's negligence in supplying a car with a nonfunctional GPS system. When traveling back from West Yellowstone Airport to Yellowstone Park, we lost satellite connection and attempted to use the in-car GPS. The screen displayed "Insert SD card," but no SD card had been provided. As Doug is well aware, cell service in that area is extremely limited. As two women in our 60s, we were left disoriented and vulnerable on isolated mountain roads. At one point, while attempting a three-point turn on the evening of August 30th, around 8:45 pm, the car nearly went off a cliff on a gravel road with no guardrail. This was a terrifying, life-threatening experience that I will never forget. The absence of proper navigation directly endangered our lives, and this failure rests squarely on Avis's negligence. To make matters worse, Avis compounded these failures with billing discrepancies: I was promised a $295 refund by one representative, only to later be told there was "no record" of the conversation. Another agent, Norma (Job ID: 75328888), promised $204.52, but only $196.66 was refunded. Despite my repeated notification to a representative on August 31st at approximately 10:00 am that I was returning the car with ¾ of a tank, I was inexplicably charged $74.10 at BZN Airport. Oh Avis! At check in we waited in the preferred line (with several other people) and watched all the customers in the regular line get served first (even the ones that got in line after all of us). Then they told me they didn't have the car type I reserved and only had a mini van. No one was wearing name tags so I can't tell you who helped me but she had very short hair. We popped a tire in the middle of Yellowstone National Park without any service. I had to contact my boyfriend via satellite phone for him to contact a tow service. It's been four months since my original Rental and I am still fighting with Avis for over $1000 worth of fraudulent, shady business dealings. The young man said they did not have the car for me and offered first a 5 person car and then a 2 WD minivan. We begged for something else and for them to look around. unfortunately, we had a very dangerous and negative experience at this location. We had called ahead knowing we were going to be skiing in Big Sky. We were told all full-size trucks would be 4x4 and only the full size. So we upgraded to the full-size vehicle. I called roadside assistance who was willing to help, but when they were calling the location to get a vehicle they were told I was not approved for an exchange. We rented a 4WD Suburban for a week-long ski trip. We pre-paid for a full tank of gas. By the time we drove to Big Sky, the low oil pressure warnings were constant. I returned a rental on November 11th at about 6:00 pm and tried to get a new reservation under Budget. Had I known that avis and budget were the same company, I would NOT have booked with this company again. Their attitude was hostile and uncivilized. Their customer service was inexistant or below basic business standards. In the many years that I have dealt with businesses. I was trying to rent a new car and got horrible service. Kyle said I could only get a minivan which I didn't need. He also wouldn't disclose the total charges despite the fact that my existing reservation through Expedia included taxes and airport fees. I would not rent from this company ever. They charged my credit card MUCH more than what was stated in the paper contract that I still hold. This is for the rental that I had returned. These are fraudulent practices. There were also multiple additional $30 charges that I never authorized (about 9 transactions). Kyle who lacks proper training and professionalism, swiped my card despite the fact that I asked him to disclose the total charges first. He didn't know what he was doing and just decided to charge my card. I could also see a few minutes after I got dismissed, that when they got a white business-like male customer, the man looked like he was treated with more respect from what I could see and hear. It looked to me like my case was about discrimination on the basis of gender, age, foreign name and presumed origin. I was bullied by Kyle who told me I could not use my personal phone for some reason. Larry - if that's the right name- the 'manager' on duty on 11/11/25 at 6:00 pm, was hostile and told me ' I had a few seconds to make up my mind and get out of there'. His hand was shaking while he was saying this. He also said he was not interested in what transpired with Kyle. Also with the initial reservation, Kyle accused me of causing pre-existing large scuffs and scratches on the car when I reported those. Beware of this. This is how they 'do' business at this airport. Rented a vehicle for 1 day and refilled with fuel. I was still charged 132 dollars to refill the fuel even though it was full. I do not recommend renting from here. Staff lacks experience and no attention to detail whatsoever. The company never sent a receipt until I called and asked for one. Funny how things happen that end up really making a big impression. This was one of those experiences. We had reserved a truck with Avis. When we arrived at the counter, a very nice lady named Kaitlin helped us. Kaitlin was friendly and efficient and before we knew it, we were off to pick up our vehicle. When we arrived at our vehicle, the first thing we noticed was how dirty it was. This truck looked like it had been mudding as there was mud caked on the sides and wheels. Not wanting to make a big deal out of it, we attempted to proceed. Well sitting inside was a bit tight. This truck only had manual adjustments. Thankfully there were several other vehicles in their same area so we decided to check out some of them. We found a couple that were a better fit and went back to ask if we could switch vehicles. We were able to make an even switch and ended up with what was a much nicer vehicle in our opinion. A top of the line F-150. This was a really nice vehicle which in turn really made for a much more enjoyable vacation for us. All thanks to some great help from Kaitlin at Avis! read more

They are real problem solvers and I will rent from Avis/Budget every time from now on. Oh, and the rent price was extremely excellent given July is a high season. We picked up our SUV at Bozeman airport yesterday and have two problems: 1. The car stinks of dogs and my daughter is allergic. 2. We picked up the car 7 hours earlier owing to our flight change. The rep said we would be charged an extra day which seems odd because our pick up was after the 10 am return time next week. I checked my Amex and it was charged ~ additional $450 for the extra day. I may have to do the two hour round trip back to get a new car and we are supposed to be skiing today. I feel taken advantage of by Avis mainly because of the $450 extra charge on my Amex. The rep may not have known about the condition of the car. I wanted to share an update. I drove an hour back to Bozeman Airport to swap cars. I got a nice Suburban and also found out the over charge for early pick up was $250 not $450. The extra $200 is a temporary security hold. I had booked a large SUV (Tahoe or Expedition) 5 weeks prior to my arrival at Bozeman. I had actually hoped for a free upgrade due to my Preferred Plus status. Upon arrival, I was notified that "Corporate" made a mistake and did not order enough large SUVs. I was obviously upset, because we needed the space due to a large group. The manager offered to give me a $100 discount, to which I assumed was the difference in rental prices anyway and agreed. He went to the back room and returned after 5 minutes or so to let me know that he could not issue a refund because I had pre payed. So not only did they not have the vehicle I rented, they wanted to charge me for it and then give me a smaller vehicle. Absolutely unacceptable. The manager did his best by offering a free tank of gas and throwing in insurance I didn't want to make up the $100. Then, there was no staff to show me to the vehicle. They simply gave me instructions on where to find it in the garage. The car could have been started to warm up given the extremely cold temperatures, but it was not. When I got into the vehicle there was trash left from the previous renter, empty coffee cups, etc. what a joke of a rental service. I would have given 0 stars if it were an option. read more

we rented a Kia Sportage for four days, unbeknownst to us the two front tires were bald. we got a flat at our vacation destination two hours away from Bozeman , the spare was the tiny kind where you could only drive 50 miles per hour and only for 80 miles so we had to drive over an hour on the 80 mph highway going 50 mph to drop the car at butte airport then we had to get a ride to Bozeman... a hassle and expensive, we were lucky both tires didn't go flat... so two hours on the phone with them and they don't want to refund us the money.... Avis at the Bozeman Airport provided the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my entire life. I don't think I have ever complained about service online, but this absolutely deserves it. Avis reservation # 34597719US2 at Bozeman Airport, BZN We chose the option to bring the vehicle back on a full tank. An unfortunate toddler tantrum caused us to forget to fill the tank. This has never been an issue with any rental company I have ever worked with previously. When I went to speak with the man checking vehicles in he informed me they would charge $15 per gallon to fill the tank. I then asked him if I could just go fill the tank up and bring the vehicle back. He informed me that he already closed the rental as filling it would no longer be an option, but that we should speak with customer service. He closed the rental without ever speaking with us. Customer service was worse. The agent, Jessica, was downright nasty to us and refused to provide her full name. She scoffed at us when providing the Avis customer service number and mockingly said "Good luck with that" when handing me the number. She told us Avis Corporate would not do anything to make this right. She also told us that the man who checked us in was the owner of this Avis franchise and that she couldn't override his decision. Why would the owner send us to customer service? He could have just told us who he was from the start, but he instead chose to send us running in circles. The owner COULD have chosen to make things right, but he refused to even converse with us. Hertz, National, and Enterprise have never treated us this way. We are always greeted by an employee, asked how our trip was, asked if the vehicle fit our needs, assisted in removing bags, and then we confirm that we no longer need our vehicle with them. Atrocious service. Atrocious behavior. I fully recognize that I forgot to fill the tank, but I was willing to make it right quickly. Avis couldn't be bothered and treated us like cattle. Walked by two of the vehicles they claimed to not have on our way to their lesser replacement, only to find that vehicle with garbage from the previous renters. If walking to your destination is an option, its a better choice than Avis and you might get there in the same amount of time based on how long and inefficient their customer service is. First of all, they don't answer the phone. And this is not a super busy airport. Second, our flight was delayed by 1hr. Avis knew we were delayed, but they closed the Avis rental desk anyway. Several people on our same flight were left w/out vehicles at 1am. All other Rental Car company desks at the airport remained open due to the delayed flight. Avis was the only one closed. So we had to take an Uber and return the next morning for the rental vehicle. Third, I had reserved a premium XL size SUV several months before the trip, due to 5 people in our travel group with ski equipment. When we arrived, I was told that the class of vehicle I reserved was not available. I then saw 10-12 of the correct class of vehicle in the available-lot. When I inquired about those, I was told those all had "maintenance issues". BS! - I don't believe them. After I exhausted my attempts to get the vehicle class I reserved, I told them we required AWD/4WD vehicle due to snowy/icy conditions in Montana. Only to be given a 2WD Ford Explorer. I had to return the vehicle after 1 day of the rental because it was unsafe to drive in the snowy/icy conditions. I again asked for a larger class AWD vehicle in the class that I reserved. Again I was told by the desk clerks that none were available. A few hours later, I received a call from someone else saying that several vehicles in the class I had reserved were available. By then, I had already rented from a competing provider. He also let it slip that it is their standard tactic to talk customers down from the class of vehicle they had reserved. Seriously! Avis fraud! Look at their reviews before booking and don't be fooled by their lower prices online. Our reservation was for a pick-up at Salt Lake City airport August 9, 2023 at 10:00 am, and return at the Bozeman Yellowstone airport the following day (Aug 10) at 10:00 am. The price due at pick-up was $481.92. We ended up dropping it off early - the same day as pick-up at 6:35pm. We asked the guy at the return if we could get a receipt and he told us we don't need one because they have a license plate reader. Avis recorded the return on August 10, 2023 at 2:45pm - and charged us $919.20 as a late drop off. We have photos of the drop off, photos that include the man who told us we didn't need a receipt, photos that show it is the Avis at BZN. This review is just to warn other people not to believe them if they say you don't need a drop off receipt. Get absolute proof that your car was returned. I also suggest taking a photos or video of the car at drop off. This is such a scam! read more
