I'm alarmed by the number of low reviews but based on our visits; we've rented many cars from this location for short road trips or if I need my car taken in for repairs. I've never had a bad experience. There's never a long wait when we check in and we have always found the service here (both in person and over the phone) to be exceptional. The cars we rent have always been clean inside and out. Staff always goes through a point inspection with us prior to handing over the keys. The prices are reasonable and occasionally they do promotions on their car rentals. If we ever need a car from Budget, we can always count on them to come through for us. read more

We were able to get a nice big car for our trip. It was like new even with 77000 miles on it. The desk person was helpful and polite. We were not able to pickup our car early though due to some Budget policy that said it had to return the same hour that it was picked up on the return date. But that was not really an issue. My only complaint is that we were not clued into the Hybrid car functions. We had no idea how to get the cap open on the charge port. And the mileage was 28 which is great for a regular gas car but not the 48 that the clerk promised. The battery was never more than 3% charged. The manual didn't tell enough to know if we were supposed to charge it in addition to gassing it up. So more instructions there would have been helpful. Also took 5 minutes to find the button that opened the gas cap. So nice car, nice ride, nice person. read more

I rented from here twice in a week. I decided to do prepay. One time my vehicle was not available and the second time I was told they would let me know. Also the car was dirty!!! Very dirty it was like someone returned it and they gave it directly to me without cleaning or sanitizing the car. If I could give a lower rating I would. The gentleman who worked there seemed very unhappy. Also, like he was overworked, and he just didn't care. Just returned a rental which at first was blocked by the owner Robert because the tank was not full. We were not given it full. We called the customer service and they asked to speak with the employee at the store whose name starts with a "d." The employee said no he would not speak to customer service and started acting unprofessionally towards us. Do not rent from them and honestly, just find a different company just in case. read more

Reposting this since Budget flagged it for removal. I am a real customer, and had a terrible experience here. Here is the original review from April 2018 they (most likely paid to have) removed: One star is generous since zero stars is not an option on Yelp. Let me qualify this review by stating I am a long time Budget truck user as I've moved a bunch, and typically choose them because of cost and friendliness. No more. We rented a moving truck in Louisville, and dropped it off at this location. When we picked up the truck, the woman let us know the gas gauge was just left of full, but that it should 'probably' be full. It's my fault we didn't look how far left the gauge was. This is pertinent. When we went to drop off the truck, the location had already closed and had after hours parking instructions with a key drop off. Before parking we drove approximately two blocks down the same street to a Shell gas station and filled the tank. When we started the vehicle it looked like it was slightly above 3/4 tank, so we tried to fill it again. And then one more time for good measure. All three times it would take no more gas. We figured, at this point, that the gas gauge was wonky and we wouldn't have to worry since the tank wouldn't accept any more gas. Low and behold, we were charged $45 for a gas and gas fee yesterday relating to the rental. When we called customer service, they informed us it was a valid charge because the location had to put gas in the truck. We explained what happened, and they said the best they could do would be to refund the $30 fee. Knowing we did nothing wrong, we requested the situation be escalated. That escalation ended up with a denial too. Thereafter, we stopped into this (Evanston) location and the man had absolutely ZERO empathy for our situation. He even admitted the gas pumps at that station were probably "bad" (not sure what that means, but ok) but that he had to put a little bit of gas in it, "had" to charge the fee, and he wouldn't do anything for us. He even went so far as to literally say, "you did nothing wrong, but I'm still going to charge you." He said this more than once. It wasn't even the fact that the situation went sideways. We own up to the fact that we could have come in the following day when they were open since the gas gauge looked weird. But to smugly say something like that, without an ounce of regard to customer service or basic human decency, struck a nerve. And now customer service won't refund the fee they previously offered since they escalated it. And the tier 2 people they escalated it to said it's out of their hands and they "consider the matter closed." Avoid doing business with this soulless corporate machine at all costs - they won't hesitate to ransack you for every penny they can get (with a smug smile, no less). read more

TL;DR: I rented and pre-paid for an SUV twice only to show up and be told they gave it away to another customer earlier in the day. If you need an SUV or a specific type of car, do not come to this location. In the last year, we have given this Budget a few shots and I am sad to have to write this review since the prices are so good and it is close to my home. We own a small compact car and rent SUVs to travel long distances since we have a baby with a large car seat. Unfortunately, we have rented (and pre-paid for) a small SUV three times and this location gave away our SUV in two of the instances before we got there to another customer. The first time this occurred, I had made the reservation (and pre-paid) for around 3PM. We did not show up to the location until around 6:30 PM and was informed that Budget's policy is to give away the SUV (so long as we have a car alternative) within 15 minutes of a no-show reservation. As conceded by the employees at this location, this policy is not written anywhere on the website or in the agreement sent after you pre-pay. I did, however, confirm with customer service that this is not a Budget policy whatsoever. So we ended up getting a car instead of an SUV and Budget paid us back the difference in price. The second time we rented at an early time in the morning and had no problem getting our SUV, likely because they did not have an opportunity to give it away to anyone that day. Most recently, a few weeks ago we rented an SUV for another long distance trip. I made the reservation for 5:30 and showed up only a few minutes late. I was told that the SUV I rented and pre-paid for had been given away earlier that day per company policy. I was offered a car. As we had a 7 hour trip coming up I told the employee it was unacceptable. He checked the records and realized someone was returning an SUV in the next 30 minutes so I could wait if I wanted to, otherwise I could take a car from there or go to Ohare (during rush hour traffic) to pick up an SUV. I called customer service and was assured this was not Budget's policy and that if I prepaid for an SUV, it should be there and should not have been given away. I waited for the returned SUV and left late on my trip. Overall, I am extremely disappointed by this location's actions. Budget has confirmed it is not company policy to give away cars earlier in the day. I will not be returning here. I gave the business two chances before writing this review, but realized that people (including the man in line in front of me who asked if he would get a truck later that week and was told it would be there) need to know that they are not guaranteed the car they rented, even if they pre-pay for it. read more

I've had absolutely no solid help from any of your crew. And none of your customer service numbers actually connect to anyone. We booked a 26-ft truck for a cross country move over 3 months ago. Today, less than 24 hrs before our scheduled pickup, we get a call that they don't have a truck. Anywhere in the Chicago area... really???? No location in the metro Chicago area has a 26-foot truck? What kind of operations allows that to happen? When the call was escalated to a representative in Colorado, he basically told me that budget doesn't ever guarantee a truck for a certain date and that I "should have read that fine print". Never once apologizing. In fact at one point Sergio said "You aren't being nice to me but then expect me to help you." When in reality, I'm just expecting your company to do their job, not trying to make friends. I've now been waiting for over two hours on some sort of resolution. What I'm realizing is that it's not an issue of not having trucks, it's an issue of not having trucks you are willing to send out of state on a one-way move. This has been one of the grossest examples of incompetency by a company I've ever experienced. At present I'm waiting to hear if there is "possibly, maybe" going to be a truck available at a location further away from me. Which, okay fine, I'll drive and get it. But also shouldn't that be your responsibility to get it to the location we agreed upon during booking. Or is that in the fine print too? Maybe your "fine print" should just say "can cancel and change your shit at any time we want." At least just be up front about how terrible your procedures are. ALSO, I have booked movers through Budget, yes I know it's a third party, but it was booked during the same booking process for the truck. How is it that you can let that happen? I've paid a partial fee up front that I won't be getting back for guaranteed movers that come along with a truck that is apparently not guaranteed. It's a scam. You know it's a scam & it's amazing companies like yours are allowed to get away with it. I've had to coordinate family members to help with this move from out of state, buying flights for babysitters, paying movers on both ends (through you), booking extra cars (through you), booking hotel rooms for the nights we are traveling. I would give a negative 5 if I could. Do not rent with Budget unless you are prepared to clean your own vehicle, maintaining it with oil changes and servicing the tires or want to be ripped off. I made the HORRIBLE mistake of sticking with renting from Budget because we had a 2 day voucher (due to the fact that we had to clean our own car and do an oil change) which they indicated they would honor as I indicated if they were not going to honor the voucher then we were not going to rent from them. Total of bill should have been less than $60....total they charged me $231 the first time and then when called them to bring it to their attention they screwed me over with charging an additional $215 and all this just before I leave to go out of the country. read more

Rented a car for graduation weekend--horrible experience from start to finish. I needed a minivan for my entire family, but when we showed up on time, they had no cars on hand, let alone our minivan (which we reserved two months ahead). The manager was passive-aggressive and rude, and kept referring us to call a customer service line, which in turn referred us back to the manager to secure compensation for waiting nearly two hours, and for getting an SUV (with one less seat than a minivan) with much worse mpg. This threw off our entire schedule for the day, putting us hours behind airport pickups and hotel check-ins. When we returned the car, we arrived exactly 3 minutes past closing time on a Sunday--because a street festival shut down the entire street in front of the store. We had to detour unexpectedly--manager had not warned us about it, and hadn't told us what to do if we couldn't drop it off in front of the store. The manager and his crony were rude and dismissive. He said "you were TOLD to be here at 3", and had to be reminded that you don't command your customers to do things--you ask them. This storefront is run and managed by amateurs who need refresher courses in professionalism and customer service. read more

If possible, I would like to leave a negative score. Very poor service. When I was at the store to pick up the car, the price the staff told me is 100 dollars more expensive than what I had online. After I told the staff the price discrepancy, The guy was very impatient. He refused to help us check what's wrong with the extra $100 and just gave us the customer service number. After we talked to the customer service, they finally changed the agreement and acted very impolitely seriously. Afterwards, when we returned the car, they charged us once again extra 100 dollars and not even told us why!!! You know we only rented the car for 2 days. 100 dollars are definitely too much! I cannot tell you how much of a positive experience I had this Christmas holiday renting from Budget Rent A Car! I booked my reservation online about a week in advance. I found a Budget Rent A Car discount coupon online for 30% off a weekend rental. I received a confirmation phone call from the location stating they had received my online rental. When I arrived at the location, not only was no one there (I was expecting 10 other people there. Great for me.), the attendant was fast, had my car in 5-7 minutes and off I went. I received a Hyundai Elantra which, I've never driven. Not great pick up but a great, comfortable car to drive to WI from Chicago in. When I came back, I dropped the car off and walked out w/in 1minute of arriving (Not an exaggeration). Keep it up Budget Rent A Car! I will be renting from you all the time now! Working close to this Budget location had it's advantages... I saved at least $20 when I rented here instead of in Chicago (thanks to those oh-so-lovely city taxes). I literally live next door to a Budget in the city, yet I preferred to rent here every time. The staff is friendly (though sometimes overwhelmed... it seems that the minute I walked in the door phones start ringing off the hook, or walk-in customers want crazy truck rentals... making me stand around waiting to get on the road) but that seems par for the course at all car rental joints. The wait is the only negative, but again, that's hit or miss & not really their fault. Silly customers... wanting things and stuff. Psh. They have a good selection of cars, cars are always clean, and 80% of the time I end up getting upgraded to a better car than the one I reserved on-line. Score!! Also, the new & improved location is much, much nicer than the old one down the block. Totally bummed I won't be close to this location anymore. read more

Anyhow, i used them twice - both times made a last minute reservation online and reserved an economy car and got the mid-size, more specifically Dodge Avanger (ironically the SAME one). Both times I extended the rental - it cost me an additional $10 only plus I paid economy price for a better vehicle. Easy, fast, courteous service. I rented a 10' truck to move a few furniture items. The truck worked well and was in fine shape. My only complaint was that we accidentally left a metal bed-frame bar in the truck. When we went back to see if it was still there, the truck was gone but we found that the bar had been tossed into the weeds. Twice I've reserved a 10' truck over the last 3 months, only to be called 2 days before the rental date and to be told they didn't have any trucks. On both occasions the reservation was made over 30 days in advance. The last reservation they cancelled was done 2 days before my wedding, I needed the truck to move all of the tables/benches/decorations and Budget left me without a truck. Luckily U-Haul on Dempster came through for me and helped out, something Budget couldn't/wouldn't do. I would not recommend using Budget at this point. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. I made a reservation online for a moving truck 2 weeks ago. 2 days ago we got a confirmation email stating all was well, and they'd see us on Saturday. This morning, the day before our huge move, we got a call stating they don't have a truck for us, won't have a truck for us, and never did have any trucks that size. There was nothing they could do, and basically, we were **** out of luck. After asking why we were even allowed to make a reservation (and get a confirmation email), the unapologetic dude on the phone just stated "It's company policy." Ooooookay. Thank goodness we were able to get a truck from Home Depot ,but I will absolutely never rent anything from Budget ever again, and I've told every single one of my family members and friends about this. I rented a car from this location this past weekend. I did not read the fine print that said if you choose to use your debit card, you are subject to a credit check. It is a blanket yes or no credit pass. I have rented from this place in the past and used my debit card with no issues, but somehow the owner, Curtis, said I did not pass and said, "something must have happened to my credit since then." This is bogus as I have excellent credit. It was like he wanted to create a problem for me. I did not have another credit card. I ended up calling my boyfriend, who lives down the street to help, and Curtis was not having it. He said the car could only be paid by a credit card in my name. I took an Uber that cost $15 one way and he did not care if it was going to cost me $45 or not. He said, "You need to do what you need to do." Now, because I booked within 24 hours of my reservation, it would have cost me almost double to cancel due to his stank attitude. So, I had to go all the way home to get a different credit card. Not done yet, when I was on my way back to return the car, I was possibly going to be late due to traffic in the city. I called and wanted to inform them that I was going to be returning within minutes of them closing to see if they would wait for me. Well, the first time I called, oddly we got disconnected. The second time I called, he adamantly stated, "We close promptly at 3," and could care less I was doing my best to get there on time. I have no doubt he would have charged me an extra $100 if I arrived one minute passed closing. I arrived with 3 min to spare - thank God. I had to do my best not to speak to him because I was going to lose my s*#t on him. This company, more specifically this location, does not deserve your business. I was renting a car on a Friday before a 3-day weekend and was a little nervous after reading reviews. I pre-paid for my car online and when I got there, the guy working at the desk was ready for me. I gave him my id and a card for the hold (which was only $100) and in less than 5 minutes I had the keys to the car. We reserved a huge moving truck weeks ago, only to get a lack-luster phone message from a guy today letting us know that they "just didn't have a truck for us", "theres nothing I can do for you." I normally have good experiences with this company. Until today. We were never told that pets weren't allowed, but today they wanted to charge us $100 to vacuum a scant amount of pet hair (we covered the seats whsowhole our dog was in the car). This is after we have spent nearly $1000 with Budget this month alone. I am seriously disappointed that they felt the need to charge us if we didn't vacuum it ourselves. Like Patrick O., I, too, had a great experience at this location this past holiday season. I only regret that it has taken me this long to get around to telling folks about it. Actually, I have been a regular customer of this Budget office for least least 15 years. But a friend's sister was working at one of their competitors so I agreed to send some business her way for a Christmas eve rental. Unfortunately, when I arrived to pick up my car, I found that they had apparently overbooked and were short two cars for their reservations, and I would have to wait 2 to 3 hours before they could get one from another location. Sadly, this was happening about 2 hours before I HAD to be in Racine Wisconsin for dinner. Needless to say, I was livid. I called my regular guys at the Budget office at 733 Chicago Ave. and they were on it in a heartbeat. The moment I arrived in the office the porter took off to go get the car. There was some glitch with my card, but Curtis (one of the co-owners of the franchise) spent about 5 minutes feverishly typing away on his computer and...problem solved! By that time the car was out front and ready to go. For many years, if I needed to rent a car, I have relied on this office. And I have NEVER had a problem of any kind. Robert and Curtis are always 100% professional and dedicated to ensuring that their customers are satisfied. Deeply disappointed in Budget. Their evanston location really dropped the ball on this one. I had done a reservation two weeks in advance and when I got there first thing at 730 am that morning for my pickup, I was told that there was no rental truck available for me. I was never warned in advanced about this and the person at the desk did not apologize and asked me to call customer service and did not go out of his way to service me considering that I was the one being inconvenienced. This caused a bigger headache for me as I had to leave my apartment by noon and I eventually had only 2.5 hours to move all my belongings into a different rental service through Penske that came through at the last second. This could have been worse as I had to legally leave my building by noon. Very disappointed in the service and all customer service could do was offer a measly 10% discount, which through Penske, I actually saved more money and did not have to wait even longer to get themselves corrected. I will never use them again. I am also not going to bother complaining anymore to customer service. That's been done and without even getting a resolution. Just awful read more

I have had the misfortune to deal with these thieves twice. The first time I rented a car my plans fell through. I returned the car less than an hour later, and they charged me a full day rate after telling me that they would discount it because I had the car less than an hour. When I called them on it, they said they would discount my next rental to $25, which was the next day. I returned the car on time, with a full tank of gas. They didn't give me a receipt other than the initial contract. Weeks later I got my AMEX statement and found that they charged me $40.59, and dated the transaction two days later. ripped me off for "refueling charges"! I admit I forgot to refuel the car after using it to go to a funeral. But first of all, $7.95 is a scam. and Second, they charged me for seven gallons of gas. I only drove about 65 miles. So either the Chevy Impala get's less than 10 miles per gallon, or they are totally scammers here. They were understaffed and no one even talked about refueling, nor did they document the fuel gage. Further, the parking lot for returning cars after hours is unsafe- no lights, very dark alley next to tracks, and it looks like it's been hit by a bomb. Similar to what others have said, this location is not a trustworthy place to rent a car or truck. Despite reserving a moving truck well in advance, I was called the day of our move and informed that they had no trucks of any size available and there was "nothing [they] could do." This left us in a horrible lurch, trying to find a rental truck at the last minute so that we could move our stuff to a new home. Nope, not again. They are flaky and rude at this location. I went in on a Sunday morning to rent a car, the guy in line ahead of me was returning his car, so what does the Associate on duty do? He immediately tries to give me the car that was just turned in. I say to him, "isn't it protocol for you to wash, clean the interior, and check fluids when cars are returned"? He gave me some song and dance. This was important because my intent was to drive out of town and knowing that the car was fluid-full was important. Anyway, about the return experience, I returned the car on schedule and the employee behind the counter was so dismissive, this guy wouldn't even look at me when I asked him a question, another guy simply snatched the keys out of my hand and off he went. These guys are totally clueless when it comes to good customer service, they do absolutely nothing to make you want to rent from them again -- and I won't. read more

I am very disappointed with the service provided by the management. I recently contacted Robert and Curtis due to a billing error - I was billed an extra day. I returned the car to the sketchy lot after their office closed but for some reason they didn't check my car back in until the following day after I was billed for an extra day. When I contacted them to notify them of the error, they were not friendly or helpful. I was told that they could not print out receipts or access their computer. I was told to call back. I tried to call back several times but could not get anyone to pick up the phone. I finally was able to get a hold of them and was told that they could not help me, they didn't want to help me and that I was to call customer service. Due to the locations incorrect information the national customer service line could not help me. They had me down for two rental days as opposed to the one day that I had the vehicle. If you decide to go with this company, I recommend the following if you return your car after their offices close at 6:30pm, make sure to return the next day to confirm that they checked your car back in otherwise you will find yourself in the same situation as me. I am very angry with myself for not returning to get an updated receipt the next day but I didn't want to be late for work.
