Walked in on a Saturday afternoon and there were some 5 to 6 people working, most behind the counter and one at the freezer/refrigerator area. There were no other customers in the shop when we arrived. Made eye-contact with two of the people behind the counter who just starred at me. My fiancee tried to say hi to the girl at the refrigerator who was starring at her like she had two heads. She hesitated and then replied with a vague hi and walked away. We stood there for another 5 minutes and no one offered us any help, but they did continue to look at us like we were not at all welcome. Some of the shelves had missing items and I was tempted to ask if they had more product in back but my fiancee and I decided that this place didn't deserve our money and we left, without anyone saying a word to us. We got the impression that their reputation has gone to their heads and they couldn't care less if they were hospitable. We both decided to go back to Angelo's in Petaluma, where we are always treated like family. Angelo's isn't as fancy or organized like Bud's (that's why I gave Bud's 2 stars rather than 1) but we were really put off by the attitude we received and wont be back. read more

I grew up in Rohnert Park, but had never tried this place until a good 7 years after moving away. It's fantastic! You know the phrase "Like a kid in a candy store"? Well, I love salt a lot more than I like sweet, so a more accurate phrase for me would be "Like Jocelyn in Bud's Custom Meats." They seem to always have the wild staples such as venison and wild boar, but they also occasionally carry some delicious morsel I've either never tried or have been craving since that one time during childhood that my crazy grandma caught and cooked it. My most recent purchases were elk chops (flavorful and unbelievably tender) and tiny little quails (which are almost as cute as they are delicious). I've also tried their venison and bloody-mary-marinated tri-tip. Yum! They actually have a variety of meats marinated in this raspy-voiced-hooker of a drink mix, and I intend on trying them all. I've been hunting wild boar for the past few years and have always gone to Bud's to process the pigs (2). They have always done a a great job. I was on my way up to Geyserville for wine tasting and I found this place saying it had delicious jerky. I knew it was a must visit spot for me since they sold wild game jerky. We used our GPS to take us here and after the exit we had to drive about 3miles into the town. All the commercial businesses had disappeared and it became farmland. Our GPS said our destination was 0.2miles away but when you looked around it was ALL farmland. Then we see a huge sign that said Bud's Custom Meats and saw the entrance. When you turn in you kinda drive through farmland property and my friend just kept saying, "the places I take them". But after you drive deep down into the driveway path you'll eventually end up at Bud's Custom Meats. I was a little scared to walk-in because I didn't know what to expect but the guy who was managing the front desk was super nice. He offered us a sample of the cowboy candy jerky which is currently their best seller and 2012 medal winner. We ended up getting the blood mary beef (2010 medal winner), wild pig, venison, and buffalo. All the meat had the same seasoning but it was interesting trying the different wild games they offered. I thought all the meats were very tender except for the venison which was a little harder to chew but that's probably because venison tends to be a lot more lean than other meats. I would have gotten the cowboy candy but we had so many jerkies and I had a sample of it. The only thing I didn't purchase was the cowboy candy, teriyaki beef, and grass feed beef. They had other meat in the fridge that we would have loved to buy for a bbq but we had no way of storing it... Next time I'd definitely come back for some cowboy candy. All the meat was $29.99/lb except for the beef which was $24.99/lb. I spent a little of $20 for everything which I didn't think was too bad since how often can you get buffalo jerky? I read in other reviews that they sell other types of jerkies so I'd definitely like to come back when they restock. read more

I really like Bud's! Bud's will be a standard stop when up in the Petaluma area - which is quite often these days. Pricing is great - I didn't feel gouged at all. And they are accomodating. I ordered a roughly 10-lb shank end ham for Thanksgiving. When I got there to pick it up, I realized I had forgotten to ask them to shave off a few 1/8' slices prior to packaging. No problem - they accomodated my need quickly. Looking forward to ordering up another ham for xmas! We have had a few of their tri-tips. The Bloody Mary being the best. The other's tended to be too sweet for us. Their ham and cheese sausage just effin rocks! Their 2010 Grand Champion bacon baked up nice and flavorful. We also really liked their mild breakfast sausage. There was some confusion with the lady at the counter as to whether they sold bulk breakfast sausage. Alas, the girls standing next to her were wrapping some up as I posed the question. We bough four packages and look forward to getting more. If you are interested in the bulk breakfast sausage, you may want to call ahead to see if it is a standard item. Bud's has a very visible sign from Old Petaluma Road/Hwy. Once you turn onto Petaluma Hill Road, prepare yourself for an old country road, a turn around a bend in the road (two-way traffic is dicey), and then - voila! Bud's is closed on Sunday's. read more

Vegetarian friends, avert your eyes . . . . I'm smitten over Bud's sausage - all meat, no grease or mystery bits that you need to spit out. And the seasonings are perfection. You can buy elk, venision, wild boar, and so much more in chops, stew, ribs, and sausage. Their bacon looks good, but I make my own. They sell an amazing looking smoker for the backyard - I'm told women love it because there are no fire flare ups to singe our eyelashes or hair. Plug it in, add the wood chips, add the meat or vegetables and smoke away. You can even bake bread! Service from the guys is always friendly and helpful. The long drive down the country road is always a nice trip for we city gals and guys. read more

Let's just say that I am so glad to have left my college-vegetarian phase long behind me. Bud's Custom Meats has the best meat on the planet (sorry, honey!) and I am not ashamed to admit that my mouth is watering at the thought of it. Of course, Bud's Meats are not for the beginning grillers & chefs, and I take no responsibility if you're disappointed because of the preparation! (Go to Safeway for practice meat before you try your hand at the good stuff!) A few of my tried & true favorites include the Bloody Mary Tri-Tip, all of the sausages, and the Corned Beef. (My mom will not use anything but Bud's for her St. Paddy's Day feast!) I'm not big on bacon (never have been), but Bud's bacon cooks up like a dream & I'm told it's the absolute best (especially when I serve it with waffles)! For those looking for an interesting, unique, or hard-to-find flesh ingredient - I can almost guarantee that Bud's has it. (If they don't have it, you won't be able to find it! If you love MEAT this your kind of place. My wife and I Love the Italian spiced Venison Sausages, while the premarinated chicken breasts and thighs can't be beat! We especially like the Lemon Chicken marinade - since the chicken is skinned and deboned a pack makes a decent Family Dinner for 2-3...depending on your appetite. While the drive there is off the beaten path - the meats and service are definitely worth it. We like to buy several different meats to be frozen and pulled out for nights when Safeway Rotisserie Chicken just won't cut it. When you're picking up 100+ lbs of meat, one might not think you'd need more meat, but they have such an incredible selection of other local/rare meats that it's hard to pass up. It doesn't get fresher.Very pricy top quality beef. Shockigly reasonable gourmet sasuage, hamburger, bacon and specialty meats. (Try the ground Bision, makes the best burger in the world!) WILL NOT PAY the 25 dollar a pound price cut on the premium beef. But I have a couple time and it's worth every penny. Take your kids here is they never have seen a butcher shop, 50 50 they will turn vegatarian when they realize meat is so.... bloody. :) Back in the day, before shrink wrapped steriity, you could find food like this. Family owned and operated, fantastic selection of meat, including some not so common items like bison, venison, elk, and even some exotic game meat like rattlesnake and alligator. Matt is one of the butchers, really knows his products and customer service. Special orders are no problem, and most are ready within a day or so. They also sell some BBQs and Smokers + accessories, nice high end ones. Its a really clean shop, friendly staff, and a great place to shop whether you're looking for something to grill, or entertaining 20 people on a nice rib roast. read more

I will never buy meat from anywhere but Bud's. The meat is always top quality and worth every dollar. I go in twice a month and fill up our freezer with all different kinds of meat from Bud's. Stopped in here while visiting a vineyard in Bennett Valley. The bloody mary jerky is really, really good. Buffalo jerky also tasty. They have a huge selection of other meats (sausage, ribs, etc.) to choose from, but we didn't have a cooler, so this review is based mostly on how good the bloody mary jerky was. Also, doesn't hurt to have 4 skinned pigs hanging up outside when you walk up, ready to get turned into tasty meats. By the time we left, they were gone. read more

We had them come out to our house and butcher 3 hogs. Two of them were to be cut and wrapped. The largest one to be cut down into large pieces. Several weeks later We paid the bill, picked up the meat and drove home. Unfortunately, after doing some inventory, we found that they had not followed our cutting instructions. They smoked over 60lbs of meat from each hog which we did not ask for. And of course they charge extra for smoking meats.... then after we called to figure out what happened, we also discovered that they charged us more than originally quoted to come out to our house. We had high hopes for this place because of its reputation around town. Unfortunately we'll be looking for a new butcher. read more

I recently bought a beef for the first time from Clark Summit Farm, who recommended Bud's Custom Meats. They did a great job and helped me to understand all the different options there were for the cuts. Walking into their store to pick up my beef was like being in a candy store... This is a good place to buy meat from the case. If you take an animal there, you are unlikely to get back the animal cut to your specifications. After giving specific instructions on cutting, I got "their standard cut' including Swiss steak and club steak. I have no idea what those cuts are - they are run through some sort of machine. After several phone calls, they did apologize and give me a shank for free - they ground my shank instead of cutting it for Osso bucco. As I work my way through my order I get irritated again and again as I come up with someone else's idea about what to do with an animal it took a year to raise. I bought a lamb from a friend that had the order cut at Buds two years ago. That lamb was missing a leg. I was charged by the pound, so I let it go, but after the one legged lamb and this experience with a steer, I'm done. read more

Good Evening,, Id like to follow up on a earlier post about Buds not Taking care of a mess up. Buds had left out a order to be smoked and we lost a lot of meats to be smoked. Buds called us after our post and wanted to make it right by offering some meats to replace what was lost and I couldnt be happier. People including ourselves are always quick to write a bad review but is just as important to follow up if a business makes it right. Mistakes will happen but its how a business steps up to make it right. Because Buds called to make it right I was able to enjoy one of the best cuts of meat Ive ever had. The Cowboys Steaks are epic. Highly recommended by my Petaluma bred daughter in law who says her family has bought meat there for 30 years ,even driving down from Clear Lake. This is my "go to " place for meat from now on. Avoid this place!! Stay Away! This place is very unprofessional! After the recent fires, we were given notice to move. I usually do all my own harvesting, and cut and wrap. But with having to move on short notice we decided to give Bud's a try...Huge Mistake!! We had Bud's come out to our house and butcher 3 hogs. Two of them were to be cut and wrapped. The largest one to be cut down into large pieces and hung in my walk-in. I never mentioned it to the office, but the guy that came out to harvest our pigs had hidden the head of my 900lb hog up on his truck cause he said he wanted it. He had never done a hog this big before and wanted it as a trophy. Next time ask.... Several weeks later We paid the bill, almost $650.00 for two hogs, we picked up the meat and drove home. Unfortunately, after doing some inventory, we found that they had not followed our cutting instructions. They smoked over 120 pounds of meat! Who wants 120 lbs of sliced ham? So, they charged us to smoke the meat we didn't want smoked. And I'm out 120 lbs of fresh steaks!! Our last home raised pigs! And of course they charge extra for smoking meats.... then after we called to figure out what happened, we were told they would make it right. You can also see Matt's reply below to Kacie, how we should just contact them and he would take care of us. Still to this day, after calling dozens of times and having them say they will call us back, They still haven't! Last Friday I was PROMISED that Matt would return my call before 5PM. Still Nothing. UPDATE: after threatening to call visa and dispute the charges, I finally heard back from his staff. I guess the owner Matt didn't feel it was worth his time. They said they would give me a $60.00 refund! And there is no way I have 120 lbs of sliced ham! Wish I could include pics of the boxes on the scale! Bottom line is I have now read other reviews and have seen the same issue has happened to others!! Guess I have to call the bank, and/or file in small claims to get my money back. I understand a mistake was made. Fresh steaks as opposed to Ham steaks. But 120 lbs of meat lost, and not even a return call shows this company just doesn't care! Bud's is our go-to for the best and most interesting meats! Only found it as my daughter went to Sonoma State and it's on the outskirts of that campus. We got our fresh maple-brined Thanksgiving turkey there and it was DELICIOUS. Best turkey we've ever done. Next up - Turducken!!! read more

Premium price for a below average product. Friends got us a gift card so we checked it out. The ribeyes were "trimmed" so one is paying for excess tip fat and the jerky flavor is pathetic, especially for charging $30 a pound. I've been to lots of little butcher shops across the country and this one is by far the most disappointing, I guess we should expect it in California and are spoiled in the Midwest and northwest with quality. read more
