We were told the default for the restaurant is fish sauce, they will use vegetable sauce when they know you are vegetarian. With that out of the way, choosing tofu as the protein opens up almost the entire menu, very nice. We had Pad Thai, Pad Cha stir fry, and tofu soup. All were very well seasoned and outstanding. We ate at the sidewalk seating on a glorious evening. Not much more to say. Order at the counter, get a number, find a table, food will be delivered and the table cleared. When we arrived there was a line out the door (maybe 20-25 yards); this line was constant from the time we arrived til we departed. We ordered what we usually get at Thai places: pad see ew and Thai ice tea. It's spot on. I forgot to ask for no spice for my fiance though because I never think about spice. Wow. Just wow. This is not a typical Americanized Thai Restaurant. Some dishes have a more North Eastern flair. First, there is neighborhood parking, so that was nice for NOLA. It had a clean, but simple flair. We ordered Thai Green Tea and Thai Tea. I ordered a lunch special of Pad Ka Prao with Beef. It was a smaller portion, and still more than I would eat. We had fish cakes from the appetizers. It didn't sound too good to me, but hubby was excited, and I really liked them! Hubs ordered Spicy Somtam Papaya Salad with Grilled Pork Shoulder and Sticky Rice. He ordered it Isaan style which has fermented fish sauce. We ordered the shrimp Drunken Noodles and the shrimp Tom Yum soup. Both were very good--would order again. While the Drunken Noodles were a different type of noodle than I've had a number of other times, having an open mind found me devouring them. Best Thai, no contest, in NOLA and probably even Louisiana. I enjoyed a well made Thai Tea and perfectly made shrimp drunken noodles. The flavor was incredible. My group shared the fried dumplings (I could have eaten about twenty more.) It was extremely packed due to the parade close by but they sped through the line, service was top tier, and the food came quicker than some of the red lines down here. This place is awesome! I'm from Philadelphia and have eaten Thai food all along the East Coast. Budsi's is truly authentic. We had the Pad See Ew with chicken, spicy (the level below Thai Hot) and it was hot and spice! The noodles were perfectly cooked and the fish sauce base was excellent and smokey. We also had the Ka Prow lunch special with chicken (spicy) and it was damn near perfect. My wife and I visit New Orleans frequently and this will always be a stop on our tour at least once, probably twice, when we visit. I wanted to buy a Budsi shirt, but they were out of large. I never eat leftovers. Budsi's, what did you do to me? This is why you give places second chances. Under the guidance of NOLA's own local expert, Sa'Rah H, we had a lunch meeting at Budsi's and she has made a believer out of me. Budsi's is vegan-conscious and they have an entire menu for us. In addition to that, they will be able to tell you what can be made vegan if it's not on that menu. All curries are premade with a little shrimp paste, but you know what? I'd gladly give up traditional green, red and even pumpkin curry when there's an entire menu of other delicious options that include the aforementioned drunken noodles as well as a spectacularly bright and silky tom kha soup. I ordered both and took home leftovers. I do feel that experiencing Budsi's for a late lunch made a big difference, as I wasn't ordering from the bar, which will still be a barrier for me if I'm dining here at night (possibly not a bad thing for my liver or my wallet). I had the sweetest hibiscus iced tea imaginable and normally I hate sweet tea, but this complimented my food very well. Also props to the awesome staff. The woman taking my order was very much in the know about dietary restrictions. The ambiance is super chill and casual. There's two ways to dine...order and drink at the bar or order at the food counter & seat yourself. This is a very good, and very popular restaurant in the Marigny in New Orleans. If you don't know the Marigny, this is a good place to start. The food is good, and fairly prices, but I advise you to get there earlier rather than later. Orders are taken at the counter, then you go sit while they prepare your food, and they bring it to you. A lot of places are going to this style, but it can make things difficult when it is busy, and seating is at a premium. You can sit at the bar to be waited on, and you can do takeout. The menu is pretty standard, and has options for both vegans and vegetarians, but be sure to let them know about your dietary restrictions just to be sure. You can get "spicy" food here, and they will ask your preference, but don't think that their standards are equal to yours, and don't assume they completely understand English. I ordered a Red Curry, and asked for spicy. It was good, but it wasn't spicy. Someone else at our table had ordered the same, so I asked the server who brought my food if this was the spicy version? He didn't answer me, but instead went to get a small cup of crushed red peppers that perked it up nicely. This confusion with heat is pretty typical for any restaurant of this type. What I liked most about the restaurant was 1) It was in a neighborhood, 2) It still had a distinctive New Orleans feel about it, and 3) It's pretty good. read more

The location of this restaurant has certainly helped with Budsi's popularity as it is very convenient to some of the more popular areas of New Orleans. Budsi's Authentic Thai is conveniently located at the intersection of North Rampart and St. Anthony Street just a few minutes away and 2 blocks away from the New Orleans French Quarter. The food I've had here so far has been good although the price and portion size didn't seem to be as good a value as some of the other Thai restaurants in the area which would be expected due to their location. A wonderful neighborhood gem in the Marigny, this casual Thai beckoned to me by the amazing aromas of lemongrass curry and garlic, long line of hip patrons and the full sidewalk tables. Having just thrown out a rather bland muffalata that did not fill my NOLA crave, I decided to stop here to make my tastebuds perk up. I had the beef larb - it was spicy hot, aromatic, the larb powder galangal and basil providing a lovely contrast to the pepper and onion. The seasonings were perfectly blended and flavor was delicious. They serve the cabbage in bite sized portions which made an enjoyable eating experience.
