After overdosing on gumbo and po-boys, and blackened red fish topped with crab meat, I needed another cuisine. Rather than pursuing a burger, I decided to try this well regarded Chinese restaurant across the street from my hotel. This review is based on one item I got for takeout: Szechuan Beef. I am never one to equate quantity with quality. I'm also not well-versed in authentic Chinese. I'm mostly familiar with American Chinese. I ordered Szechuan beef expecting a dry stir fry of beef strips tossed with dried Szechuan peppers. Instead I got a 1 quart container with a zesty, moderately spicy broth loaded with tender strips of melt-in-your-mouth beef. This was pure heaven, and was an explosion of tangy flavor. The quart could've easily served a family of 4. That would just require another side of rice. This was just outstanding! I've eaten here before and the food is decent, which makes this experience even more disappointing. I ordered a dish with shrimp and simply asked to substitute broccoli for the rice. When the bill arrived, I noticed I had been charged extra for the broccoli and also charged for shrimp--even though shrimp was already the protein included in the menu item I ordered. I politely questioned the charge, and the explanation I received didn't seem to match what was stated on the menu. I then asked to speak with a manager so the issue could be addressed. After quite a bit of discussion in the kitchen, the server returned, but instead of a manager coming out, I was given essentially the same explanation we had already discussed. I calmly explained why the charges didn't make sense and expressed that I was unhappy with how the situation was being handled. Unfortunately, there seemed to be little interest in resolving the concern or retaining my business. The food is fine, but my advice is to carefully review your bill before paying. Based on my experience, management does not appear particularly concerned when customers raise billing issues. read more

Decided to have lunch here before we left the great state of LA. The food was amazing! We had a mixture of appetizers and an entree. The service was fast and friendly. We were trying to decide where to eat, when we saw Dian Xin, we've previously enjoyed our meals at the other location. So, we stopped in and ordered several items to share between the 3 of us. Cucumber salad, was so good the first time, but fell flat here. The pan fried pork dumplings were also better the first time, they were good, but not as good as we remembered. Price: is very reasonable for the amount of food served. Staff: friendly and attentive Venue: it has simple decor, the restaurant itself is clean. One con, when my mom and sis went to the restroom the night of 11/20/24, they said the restroom they went to was dirty. 11/21/24, they tried the other restroom and they said it was much cleaner. Went last night as well as a few years ago and it still is amazing. The quality of the food here is still top tier. The Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) are the best I've had in New Orleans and are a must get. We also got the pork shu mai and Mongolian beef entree. All were amazing and very affordable. Hot pot disaster! I love Dian Xin on Decatur. But the one on Conti... We ordered hot pot. I have worked in China on and off for years and have eaten many varieties of hot pot in China and Taiwan. This one was ridiculously bad. Like they dont even know what hot pot is. The sweet waiter tried to explain the concept of hot pot, but it was clear that he was not familiar with the real thing. It was cubes of chicken, celery, tomatoes and peppers in a lukewarm broth. Took forever to get hot enough to cook our extra vegies. The vegies didn't look fresh. There were no a la cart sauces. The waiter pointed to the soy sauce and chili oil that were for dumplings and told us that sauce doesn't go with hot pot. My advice is to go to the other Dian Xin where there is no hot pot but the food tastes authentic. read more

For our main dish, we ordered Beef Ribs Hot Pot Style with ramen, hot pot beef slices, fried tofu, prince mushrooms, and bok choy (listed as daily greens on the menu). The broth was flavorful with peppers and beef already in it. We added the tofu, beef slices, mushrooms, and bok choy to the broth to cook as we went. Everything cooked perfectly in the broth, and we filled up quickly. We ended up taking back leftovers. 1.5 containers worth! This place is quite small and popular so it can get quite crowded. However my family of four came on a Friday night and were seated within ten minutes. While the place seems really authentic, there are options that also appeal to the American palette. Our server seemed pretty distressed as it seemed he was the only one for the whole restaurant. We got the Crabmeat and crawfish Soup Dumplings which were delicious. I loved seeing the crawfish too like blending of culture. The garlic veggies were also delicious, my favorite part was the taro. I wish I knew what was inside this sauce because it was the perfect amount of spice, sweetness, and umami. I tried to recreate it at home, and couldn't quite capture the deliciousness that this was. - Shrimp Har Gow: standard dim sum dish, always a must have in my opinion. -Xiao Long Bao Dumplings: another standard dim sum dish; held up to expectations. The wrappers didn't tear as easily as other XLB I've had across restaurants. Don't forget to top a few of them with chili oil! - Steamed Veggie Bao: a skippable dish - it wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything to write home about either - Basil Popcorn Chicken: perfectly crispy, super hot, and well seasoned. I ordered this at the recommendation of a coworker and was not let down. While I wish it came with a sauce (and I dipped it into the wonton sauce), it is still a strong dish on its own. This is a second location for what was apparently a pretty popular entree into the New Orleans food scene. Chinese was not a big focus here until pretty recently. I didn't have time for hot pot, but was happy for some small plate kind of options for lunch. Their chilled noodles had a fantastic fresh texture; the spiciness they promised was not huge and they tasted more of black vinegar, but tableside chili oil enhanced the flavor. They had veggie dumplings, which had a pretty thrilling mix of noodles and minced vegetables, and likewise took very well to condiments. I seem to have eaten them without taking a picture, perhaps because they were so delicious. A pu-er tea (which is fermented tea leaves) was quite substantial and strongly flavored. This place adjoins an alleyway (where the sadly departed Green Goddess once sat, which no longer has any other restaurants) and is small but offers a splendid atmosphere. I am not a chopsticks person, but the mostly Chinese people eating here were, and I left happy that the food scene of New Orleans is always evolving. read more

Obsessed. Veggie hot pot. Spicy. She's real spicy, but without heat it's too plain for me. I love to add additional lotus, bok choi and ramen. It'sa whole ordeal to cook at table, but so delicious. And so much food, definitely could share with friend or two. I recommend getting some apps too. My fave is the veggie bao- two heavenly soft and fluffy bao filled with minced veggies. It's tucked in tiny spot in French Quarter along one of the cutest little pedestrian ways. If the weather permits, it is fun to sit outside and people watch. The servers are quick and kind. Egg rolls were below average in my opinion meat was dry and falling out of the egg roll. The shumai was lacking flavor, but good texture, and needs the sauce. The wonton soup was good nothing special about it, but if you want something soupy order this. The stir fry noodle was very good order with extra XO sauce and it has a very shrimpy taste and noodles are cooked perfectly. The soup dumplings were really good, great flavor and texture no complaints use chili oil if you like spice. Pork bao buns were amazing delicious filling and great bao. All around amazing. Dian Xin looks to be a staple of dim sum / Chinese eats in New Orleans with their two locations. We ended up going to the #2 location (by mistake), so the menu and seating was not too extensive. That said, we still had a pretty good experience. In terms of dishes, we kinda went overboard and ordered a lot of dishes / variations of dumplings to see if this place would live up to our expectations. Ordered - Spicy Xiao Long Bao (4/5). A nice take on the classic XLBs - Crab Meat Xiao Long Bao (3.5/5). Not as good as the original but a fun and creative spin - Pan Fried Dumplings (4/5). Not too burnt and oily so a win in my books - Stir Fry Noodles Combination (4.5/5). This was quite tasty. A little oily but the noodles were on point with that wok-hei - Shumai (3/5). Pretty standard Cantonese dim sum item - Hargow (3/5). Pretty standard Cantonese dim sum item Overall this was a solid choice.
