The chicken and steak meat are well seasoned and yummy. But the whole thing is a confusing mix between a street taco and a Tex-mex style one. I think they should go straight street. Also they charge you for spicy salsa which I wasn't a fan of. read more

They have really good chips and they make their pico de gallo to order from scratch. They have a good number of fish choices and for a pescetarian, that's a huge plus. They seem like nice folks and have excellent professional service. Their spicy hot sauce was on the timid side to me. The burritos are half the size of what I would expect from a Tex-Mex place and are not a good value considering the price. The fish in my burrito was pretty bland and tasted pretty fishy. I'm not sure it was very fresh. The rice was gloppy and may have been of the same vintage as the fish. I don't think I'll be ordering from there again but will investigate the many other options available at the French market. read more

One of the fine food vendors in the fantastic Chicago French Market. Today the conference I was attending did not give us much time for lunch, but I still hoofed a quick walk to CFM to experience more international cuisine. I ordered a two taco combo, one beef and one chicken. The beef was by far the best of the two. My tacos came with Mexican Rice and Beans and I will tell you both were beyond fast food quality. I could have easily eaten another side of beans, they were that full of flavor. After I placed my order, I saw that they had tamales. I wish I would have known sooner, the one's I witnessed being served looked like true authentic tamales. Oh well, there is always the next visit. Buen Apetito is not Taco Bell (thank God) and it's not Rick Bayless, but it is a happy place in-between that provides a good Mexican lunch. read more

this place is part of the French Market found at the basement of the Olgilvie Transportation Center in downtown. meh, the place is OK, nothing about the food really sets it apart. I ordered the chicken tacos here and they were mediocre. The corn tortillas on the tacos were not really warm and were definitely not soft; it broke apart too easily and all the meat just comes tumbling out. For the price its A-OK, for downtown prices -- about $2.85 for chicken tacos each. I once got the taco salad and it wasn't all that impressive either, but it was relatively cheap at $5. all-in-all, nothing really impressive about the food and i was hungry by about 2:30PM. BATHROOM REVIEW: Not applicable, as this was a food court type establishment. Although I suppose I can review the Metra bathroom, which is right outside. And lemme tell ya, it smells horrible like homeless people live there. Definitely a squat situation. read more

I walked by French Market every other Tuesday and this is my first time tried their Quesadilla. It's a bit too hot for me, but the cheese and chicken filling is soooo great. I appreciate they're still working hard during such special time, and the staff there is really nice. read more

This place definitely hits your Mexican food cravings if you work around the French Market. I'm talking about tamales and enchilada cravings, not burrito or tacos cause let's be real, you could go to Chipotle for that craving. I get the enchiladas here. I've tried chicken and steak but I'd suggest the steak. The chicken was a little too over cooked for my liking. The spicy salsa is really good so definitely ask for it spicy if you like flavorful heat. I'm not sure what other reviewers were saying about not being able to get spicy salsa right on the food. The owner suggested and encouraged that I get spicy if I like heat. He's super nice and even gave me a sample of horchata when I stopped by during my first visit. I always go to French Market before noon to try and beat most of the lunch crowd. It's great cause then you can interact with the vendors and ask questions about the menu, and the vendors are more inclined to chat since they aren't super busy yet. I like trying all the spots in the French Market and this one is definitely worth a visit. I think the food is fairly priced for it being at the French Market too. read more

Not worth it. At all. Decent food but it falls short particularly when you compare it to the other fast food Mexican joints in the area (Burrito Beach, Chipotle,Habaneros, etc.). The steak and rice were extremely dry and not a good value for the money. Both tasted as if there were sitting in a corner of a grill or reheated.. .... The most appealing aspect of dining there is it is inside the French Market and offers Jarritos and Mexican Coca Cola. Absent that, it's a thanks but no thanks spot. Consistently FRESH taste - juicy but NOT greasy. We had steak tacos, salmon tacos, burrito bowls, chicken torta sandwich. A very good blend of ingredients (beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, cheese, lime) and the ratio of meat was on point - not skimpy at all. Every bite has a "bite." I loved the taste of their green salsa. The red sauce was also flavorful with the right amount of kick. Oh yes, very personable and attentive staff (clean space as well.) Just discovered this place and I'm kicking myself that I wasn't eating here years ago. 15 minute walk for lunch but worth it. They are doing things right to try and survive and you should go support them tomorrow. Bad reviews must be some bs from the past. Burritos are excellent and they have different tortilla options and you can order it normal or spicy and get it in a bowl just like that other place that does't need your business right now. The spicy can be a kick in the tamale but not over the top and I like it hot. Tacos follow same trend, great. $2 Taco Tuesday. Parroting Stephanie's review about the owner...dude really just needs to get out of the way and let his food do the talking. Because it's good! Awkward experience with my co-worker. We both ordered steak tacos and asked for spicy salsa and on the tacos, not on the side. The owner broke away from whatever he was doing to INSIST we get it on the side because it is real deal spicy (copyright Guy Fieri). Even after saying it was ok, he continued to press the issue. Then he went on some screed about the authentic quality of his food, how we've never had anything like this (spice level included), etc etc...all we could think of is: did he think we were dumb white guys who don't know what hot means? Lol In the end, the food was good as mentioned. And the salsa packs a punch for sure, but nothing I would have gotten upset about or felt tricked by. On multiple occasions we have come back to the French Market, thought about Buen Apetito and ultimately passed because of this bizarre experience. read more

This is "na-ch-o" place to eat in the French Market. The owner is a bully and the food is nothing special. My friend absolutely cannot eat onions for religious reasons. She ordered a taco salad, asking the owner to omit the guacamole and beans because they had onions in them. The owner gave her a taco salad with onions, even though onions were not listed on the taco salad description. The owner forced my friend to pay for two taco salads: one with onions and one without. He refused to cancel the charge for the taco salad with onions. My other friend and I came over to discuss the charge with the owner. We are female professionals in our twenties. The owner took us aside, yelled at us for being "unprofessional" and tried to intimidate us by telling us that he was a former police officer. He stuck his hand up and said he wouldn't talk to me because I hadn't ordered the salad. He also informed me that I am "a terrible person" for standing up with my friend. He admonished my friend for forcing him to omit items from her salad, saying that she was not entitled to a refund because "he did everything for her". Once my friend regained her appetite, she was barely able to eat the salad because it was so mediocre. If you're craving Mexican food and are near the French market, check out Habanera Baja Grill or Asada Mexica Grill instead. Better food and customer service by a landslide. I have never written a negative product or Yelp review before. read more

*Ok so i just got screamed at by the owner at my last visit to the french market over this review. He called me a child and threatened I better take off this review in front of everyone. He even followed me throughout the market until i had to tell security. WOW what a professional. I got FOOD POISONING from this place. I confronted the owner and he was defensive about it and not the slightest bit apologetic. This experience completely ruined burritos for me. Buen Apetito translates to "Good Appeitite" Well I guess you better be able to stomach a hospital bill too. read more

This is 4 stars purely for classic tacos if you know what and how to order. The meat will dry out if you don't specify them to make it spicy (it gets cooked in a sauce that is not as spicy as you would think). I've had the steak and chicken plain before, and frankly they are miserably dry. Their tilapia and salmon tacos are amazing, delicious, and fresh and if you like fish tacos it would be remiss not to get them (cooked spicy). read more

And my KGB pals, well, they have a Gulag in the vicinity where I'm an inmate on a tenner. The French imperialistic excursion ultimately failed. The Mexican retaliation is likely to do the same. And I'm awaiting liberation. War is hell. History lesson over. I've had Buen Apetito on deux occasions. The first time I tried the tortilla soup. The second time I tried the chicken taco. The soup was thin and just okay. The chicken taco was more than half lettuce and the rest a clearly in the minority chicken. The chicken was actually good, but there were no accompanying tastes like you'd expect with a taco. Plus, the corn tortilla disintegrated with the first bite. They should think about double shelling the tacos. Based on the line Buen Apetito sometimes has I expected it to be good. (Mind you, they're crushing Market Cafe right in front of them. Nobody, but nobody, eats at Market Cafe). My expectations were not met. And at $2.65 per taco, ya. Fool me twice, shame on me. I'm done. Dose stars. read more

I don't work very far from the French Market so I frequent it fairly often. This place is usually my first choice. I either order two steak tacos with avocado and sour cream or a steak taco salad, both around $8. The steak taco is the better value because the tacos are really small. I like the food because it tastes really fresh. The steak is always flavorful and tender and I like that they use sliced cherry tomatoes. This place isn't the best Mexican food I've ever had and I don't know how authentic it tastes. Also, other than the taco salad, the portion sizes are very small for the price. This may be because of the rent at the French Market but $8 for 2 small tacos is v. pricey if you ask me. I'll still keep coming back though for that succulent steak! read more

I've never waited so long for a two taco order. Then, the food was remarkably underwhelming and unsatisfying. The "succulent steak" and dry and devoid of flavor or seasoning, as was the shrimp. The tacos were bland and painfully uniform, using only the least imaginative ingredients (onion lettuce and tomato) carelessly tossed atop each. By far the worst meal we had in Chicago. I work in Mexicantown in Detroit so I have the luxury of having WONDERFUL Mexican food all the time. We went to Little Village and had great food there. I was very impressed with how clean the grill was, how friendly the guys were, but it ends there. I ordered two veggie tacos. Every where you go corn tacos are put on two tortillas because they are thin and break easily. I got one tortilla and couldn't even pick it up before I had a taco salad in my styrofoam box. The veggies were tasty, but the beans were oh so bland. I was glad to see black beans, though. That was a pleasant surprise! The rice was completely lacking in flavor. What totally ruined my experience is my veggie tacos (yep, I am a vegetarian) had a hunk of fat in it. I am absolutely positive it was fat. Gross. Take the bus and head to Little Village if you want good Mexican food, because this is not. My meal was almost $10, for that I would have preferred Taco Bell and the extra $4 in my pocket. read more

Joined a friend here for lunch and he said they some really good tacos. So my mouth is watering at the menu of chicken, cilantro, onions, rice, and beans.. I get my plate and I go OH. By American standards, I would consider this like a toddler meal. The taco was the size of the palm of my hand and the meat was like a half balled up fist. Kinda disappointing, but oh well. The food is flavorful and the people are really nice. I am not in a hurry to get back with so many other places in the French Market. French Market prices are a no-no. 3 Tacos with rice and beans without a drink runs you about 12 bucks. The food here is still pretty decent though. -They put a good amount of lettuce on there, it's more than I ever see. I like it since I usually ask for extra lettuce at Chipotle, but I can assume everyone else hates it -The salsa is HOT and I love it -The steak meat is very good, it's what I used to love about La Cocina's steak meat (which is not good anymore) -DO NOT get the shrimp or tilapia tacos, they definitely screw you over on the quantity of protein -rice and beans are meh, rice is a little dry and the beans are too dense, not sure how to explain it... Good for a quick Mexican fix, but the prices will keep me away most of the time. read more
