Verdugos is so delicious! Service is alway great and very attentive. We came in Thursday evening, only a couple of tables but it was still early. Our server was amazing I didn't catch her name but very sweet and a great server. Myself I ordered Ribeye steak and let me just say it's one of the best steaks I've ever had. Very very savory, flavor and seasoning is on point and chef cooked it to perfection. My daughter ordered kids spaghetti and added shrimp. Flavor was delicious it's more like a shrimp Alfredo, the shrimp are big and seasoned nicely, my daughter ate all of it. We also ordered asparagus as our side, cooked perfectly not to over done and still had a crunch. Let me talk about drinks, I had a Paloma it was so so good, strong but still tangy and sweet. I also I ordered Ruby slipper, tequila with watermelon, it was refreshing and tasted great. Both drinks have a Tajin rim. All in all .. Appreciate the effort but not up to par with what in my opinion is a "white tablecloth" steakhouse. But, maybe they don't want to be that level of restaurant. I'm asking because when walking in it feels as if the décor and seating is offering Downey a white tablecloth dining alternative. The restaurant was at about 30 percent capacity at 6:30 on a Saturday night. Looked to be getting busier as we left around 8. But before I get into those details let me start with the positive. Service was good. Started out a little slow with getting our first cocktails but then picked up once we ordered. The food came out well timed. Meaning we got our appetizer then a slight pause before we got our entrees, dinner wine and dessert. The service staff is sufficiently attentive and polite. The Old Fashioned was well balance but my wife wasn't to keen on the Mezcal drink. It was supposed to have a spicy back end and when I tried it I found it to be gassy and not spicy as described. If your into mezcal, the cheaper mezcals tend to have a gasoline or diesel fuel profile. I saw one lady send it back. The food was satisfactory. The bone marrow appetizer was good. Used some of their house made chimichurri which added a nice kick to the flavor. Had the 16oz bone-in ribeye done medium rare and it came out as ordered. My wife had the boneless version and it was prepared the same. What I would recommend is that the it be served on a hotter plate so it doesn't cool off so quickly. Sides included garlic lobster mashed potatoes, roasted brussels sprouts and a vegetable medley. For dessert we shared the crème brulee. The caramelized topping was even but the custard was a little dry. Now for the some of the details that keep me from giving it a higher rating. It has to do with ambiance. For example. The desserts are displayed at the hostess area as if I were entering diner. Put them on a cart and bring them to the table once you see that the customer has finished eating. It may be minor detail but this gives the feel that your dining at a restaurant that is into presentation and service. Another thing is dress code. If your presenting the restaurant as a "white tablecloth" steak house alternative then at least enforce a dress code. Not saying people have to wear suits but its odd to walk in well dressed and then literally be seated near a guy wearing flip flops and or guys in worn out flannels and dirty jeans. Not to mention the ball caps. I'm a ball cap wearer but not when I'm out for nice dinner. Couples are coming in well dressed and then there are some people dressed like aforementioned and then guys coming in with t-shirts, bomber jackets and ball caps. I assume you can afford to eat at a nice place but lets loose the ball cap at dinner. I found out the owner also owns Buena Mesa so maybe there's that influence of casualness or maybe it says more about Downey than anything else. Pricing is a bit less than going to Dal Rae and way less than Flemings, Morton's or Ruth Chris'. Lastly cheers to the singing waitress. She has a beautiful voice. She knocked a Whitney Houston song out of the park. If you could, put a piano in the far corner and let her sing later in the evening. read more

Social Media let down! Came into Verdugo's on Sunday 9/24 for dinner to celebrate my husband's birthday. Prior to making reservations we chose to support the restaurant due to "experience" videos we had seen on Instagram. If your choosing this restaurant based on social media presentation, think again. Our first let down was ordering the Paloma Drink, we had seen videos on Instagram that advertised a "torching presentation" on the drink which we did not receive. Our second let down was when we received our food most of the food, specifically meats, were cool to the touch already. My father sent his meat selection back which was rewarmed. As this was a celebration we ordered the tomahawk for our table which has been advertised with a table side "cutting presentation" which we did not receive. Instead the waitress told us that The Butcher was on break when we ordered but we could turn around and watch another table receive their tomahawk cutting presentation. Knowing that this was a birthday celebration if we would've simply been asked we would not have minded waiting to receive our presentation as that was the main reason we chose this restaurant. At this point we started to question what was going on with the customer service we were receiving and it started to bring down the excitement we had for this restaurant. We also were disappointed that the Caesar salads are advertised as grilled on the menu but we received 2 cold salads. When we asked about the salads being grilled and the waitress said that they no longer make them that way. Now rather disappointed with our dining experience we were just ready to finish up and go. When the buser came to clear the table the dollar store cutting board that the tomahawk was served on broke causing the board to fall with the large bone knocking cups over. Water and other beverages spilled on my mother, that was our last straw for the night, we asked for the bill. My father then asked to speak to a manager as we experienced multiple mishaps and felt there should be some compensation for the inconveniences. After waiting a while for the staff to figure out what to do, the waitress returned with our bill which had a $14 discount. The manager then came over to speak with us and implied that they compensated us with a birthday dessert and taking "some off the bill". My husband and I had already been told by the waitress when we first were seated that they do a complementary birthday dessert and sing so we knew that that was already a deductible cost. For the two hours that we spent, at a restaurant that was nowhere near busy that night, we were greatly disappointed with our experience especially because it was a celebration and there are many restaurants to choose from in LA. For the price we paid and the lack luster service/experience we received we won't be returning or recommending this restaurant. read more

So today on Easter Sunday after church we went to our usual spot but because it was Easter a lot of places were closed. We wanted to have a special dinner to celebrate my daughter's birthday this past Saturday. We thought of a few local dinner houses and decided on Verdugo's based on positive reviews on the Downey fb page and Verdugo's website page. Once we were seated, we ordered drinks and appetizers. Cocktails were great and so were the appetizers. We then ordered dinner and I asked for a wine list...NO wine list! The waiter pointed at the wall and said here are our wines! I asked, do you have a Cabernet Sauvignon? The waiter said we have Josh and Decoy...okay. Dinner arrived; everything was delicious. We all had ribeye steaks, we shared garlic mashed potatoes roasted brussel sprouts and carrots. No complaints about the food. I wanted to really like this place. But sadly, the ambiance is something to be desired. As mentioned, it was a special occasion, Verdugo was a fail. I felt we were in a sports bar with white tablecloths. I have not had a good lobster bisque since I came back from New York and was really looking forward to it since they offer it here, but I was disappointed, it was really salty, hardly any lobster and it had, potatoes, carrots and zucchini? Verdugos Food is incredibly scrumptious with rich flavors and delicious taste. I had the buttery sauce spaghetti with chicken and it came out amazingly tasteful and along with the medium rare Ribeye steak?! Oomph juicy and tenderized. On point! I want to give commends to the chefs.. that steak was mouth watering. Every bite was filled with amazing flavor and texture. I also had some wine flights that were a sorted wine for tasting. I had a side of Brussels sprouts that were actually pretty scrumptious to say the least. The staff were so cool and thoughtful.. our server was so sweet and friendly. I loved that the owner Ralph , was on the floor greeting and treating the customers with courtesy. The atmosphere was great and makes you feel warm. the meal came out so fast which I was impressed by. Overall the whole meal was delicious and satisfying. I'm so well pleased and I recommend this steakhouse for the finest steaks and meals in the whole local area. For a new restaurant that just started, I gotta give props and shoutouts to the staff for making our nights enjoyable and entertaining. From the bar-back drinks, to the good laughs, to the presentations. Our party had a great night. If your looking for a place of excellent food and atmosphere, you found the right place . We had a reservation for 8pm on Valentine's Day so I knew the place was going to be packed. But I didn't expect the front to be busy with waiting people. The waiting area is so small and the service was very slow. The reservations started overlapping with others so we didn't get to actually sit until 8:10-8:15. The place itself looks ok. Kind of awkward because it's just one big space and everyone is just packed like sardines. I think playing white and black movies was weird and having multiple screens showing a fireplace - kind of cheesy. The food was not spectacular either. It's ok and avaerage but nothing compared to restaurants like Mastros. We got the asparagus which was very bland. The spicy shrimp was intimidating because they're huge with this battered coating and topped off with this sauce that was too much. A few things we did like was the Ruby Slippers cocktail. My partner said it tasted like watermelon candy and was good. Also the oysters was good but some oysters had very small potions like the shell was big but the actual meat was tiny. Overall, this place is not something to be over the moon about. Definitely mediocre. ALSO: Keep in mind the place is very loud. When we first came in, there was a live singer aka just another employee not a professional third party. It was hard hearing or trying to have a conversation with my partner because she sang too loud and too much. I just want to enjoy my dinner with a nice calm ambiance and not some karaoke night. read more
