I stopped by The Olive RestoBar in Downey with my friend Brittany after a busy day, and it ended up being the perfect place to unwind, catch up, and enjoy some good food and drinks. The atmosphere was beautiful and lively, and our service was great. We started with Mexican candy shots and tried a couple of their tequila cocktails, which were a fun way to kick off the evening. The food was definitely the highlight! They brought out their house green sauce with fresh bread, and that sauce was SO good. We also tried the Batata Harra, which had a nice kick but was packed with flavor. The *Filet Mignon Sliders with goat cheese** were easily one of my favorites. OMG! The combination was so good. We also ordered the Grilled Filet Mignon Kabob, chicken kabob plate, and steak plate with rice and a side salad. Everything we tried was flavorful and enjoyable. Service 5 stars I want to give a big shoutout to our amazing server Evan. He was exceptional all around. Regrettably, I didn't get to enjoy my meal because we were so uncomfortable due to the heat... over 90 degrees hot out and the AC was just not working properly in an open space restaurant set up like this one! The patio was packed with fans exited to watch the World Cup match between Egypt & Australia. We joined them since his sweet fur baby was with us. Juan, our waiter, was kind enough to bring her a bowl of water, and the lady at the table next to us gushed over her. After we placed our order, Juan brought complimentary pita for us to share. It was warm & soft and the accompanying dipping sauce was delish. Mikey had the Kings Lunch (Ribeye steak kabob & salad) along with a Margarita, Spicy Mango Margarita, & Voodoo Ranger IPA. Their calamari was well seasoned and thankfully not so heavily battered-- but still crispy and the batter held rather than crumbling off. I really enjoyed the chicken picatta, I think you could put that sauce on anything there and it'll make everything taste better. My only complaint was the beef filet mignon kebabs (not pictured). From the moment we walked in, though, we were greeted with such warm hospitality it truly felt like genuine Middle Eastern hospitality. JJ was our server, and he was absolutely fantastic. He was attentive, kind, accommodating, and gave us wonderful recommendations throughout our meal. His service made the entire experience even more enjoyable. One thing worth mentioning is that my husband is Middle Eastern and is usually very critical of Middle Eastern restaurants because he has high standards. Even he was pleasantly surprised by how authentic and flavorful everything was, and he genuinely loved every dish we tried. That alone says a lot! We tried a variety of dishes, and every single one exceeded my expectations. I was literally doing a happy dance after every bite! We started with the hummus with meat, and wow it was delish. The hummus was so creamy, rich, and full of flavor. Next, we ordered the hot mezza sampler, and the kibbi and cheese rolls were definite standouts. They're an absolute must-try! For our entrées, we had the Kings Kabob and the King & Queen platter. The steak was perfectly seasoned and grilled, while the chicken was incredibly juicy and packed with flavor. The platter also came with French fries that were perfectly crispy. I loved that there was a mix of thinner fries and larger, potato-style pieces & it added a nice variety. We also tried the gyro plate, which was another delicious choice. To finish, we ordered the crème brûlée, affogato, and their chocolate dessert. We met up with my friend who works around the area and noticed it was located in a big shopping mall with other restaurants and stores. It is conveniently located off the freeway and there is plenty of parking. We ordered 2 drinks, 3 appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 desserts to share. We started off with the strawberry mint cooler and mango sparkling soda. The strawberry mint cooler was my favorite out of the two. It was refreshing, had chunks of strawberry bits inside and was sweet but tart. It was perfect for the warm weather we have been having. The mango sparkling soda was light but refreshing as well. We ordered 3 different appetizers. The mezza sampler came with 4 different dips which included hummus, spicy hummus, loaded labneh and yogurt and cucumber. They were all full of flavor and made fresh. The mint gave the labneh and yogurt a fresh taste. The spicy potatoes were thin and crispy. The deviled filet mignon was tender and the mango chutney paired well with the meat. The Olive kabob platter came with 2 kabobs of your choosing. We got the filet mignon and salmon. Both had a nice smokey flavor. The surf and turf had these delicious orange mashed potatoes that were super garlicky. The orange is because the restaurant uses chipotle butter. The shrimps were massive and meaty. The ribeye was cooked to perfection. It was lean with some fatty pieces. We finished our meal with the chocolate croissant bread pudding and pistachio cheesecake. The bread pudding was warmed and came with your choice of ice cream. We wanted the pistachio ice cream and something about eating warm and cold things just goes well together. The two times that I've been here, the food and service was a 10/10 experience. The servers are attentive, friendly and very helpful when it comes to answering questions about the menu. The first time I came I had the pleasure of being served by Battol who was funny, friendly and welcoming as it was my first time. My second visit, I came on a busy day due to the World Cup games being played, my server Oscar was attentive and there when we needed anything. My favorite dish here is definitely the deviled filet migñon! Each bite you take is full of flavor with juicy tender meat! My favorite drink I've had would be a tie between the pineapple coconut mojito and the raspberry margarita. Every drink I've tried here are so refreshing and well made. I love the pita bread they serve you with the tahini sauce. This is such a nice and cute place to visit whether it be on a date, with your family or even your girls. Here from out of town and Greek food always works for our group. Truth be told driving up it has a strip mall vibe so I was a little concerned, however after parking and as we walked up you could tell of all the restaurants this one was packed. Thankfully we were able to be seated right away Once sat down my friend instantly noticed the incredible large shrimp being eaten next to us then my wife mentioned the rice on another table. Let the mouth watering begin. We all ordered a drink and some appetizers. The waiter sold us on the calamari but surprisingly for the sauce to dip it in, HE WASNT WRONG! I went for appetizers last week and it was so-so. The issue that I had was with the chicken empanadas, as they were dry, doughy, and lacking flavor. A change to a puff pastry type of dough, adding seasonings complimenting the ground chicken, and perhaps adding a fatty element to the chicken in order for it not to dry out may work better. I really enjoyed my couscous with lamb skewer at lunch, the salad was weirdly fishy. It it might have been served or prepared with other salmon dishes, two from my lunch companions. I don't know if it was worth bringing up though, so I didn't. I did order a family meal that was supposed to feed 4-6 people, believe me it was meant for maybe 6-10 people. Tender cubed lamb, beef and chicken plus kefta and shawarma - chicken and beef, plus half couscous half pilaf and more salad. It was a lot of food for a small group of us at home. I found this restaurant on Yelp when I was looking for something in the area. I was surprised by how large of a menu they had. We had both the chicken and steak kabobs. Both were cooked perfectly and filled with flavor, but the steak was fantastic! I also tried both, the Watermelon and Hibiscus martini. Today is My 55th birthday. AKA Super Bowl Sunday. My 'newest year of Life' motto is to "find cool places to go that are close to where I live" and The Olive Restobar fit the bill... and then some! The food is tasty, creatively plated - I eat with My eyes first - the drink I had is super yummy with pomegranate arils & a blood orange floating on top (so fancy!) and I even scored a surprise dessert that I wasn't expecting. But all of these details pale in comparison to the human beings I encountered during My birthday adventure slash visit: Millie, Marco, JJ - especially You, JJ - Jalene, and other anonymous but still friendly faces who connected with Me, wished Me happy birthday (I see You, Isabel & Hector, Cindy, and You too, Art!) and a very, very special shout-out to Arial, Jose & Miguel who serenaded Me in two languages: a trio of Musicians that never lost their joy (despite being forced to compete with all the football noise; tbh I would have been perfectly fine with all the TVs being shut off but I 'get' it, from a 'doing business' perspective). If you have a large party, I would say you should call in to reserve. Now on to the food, which was phenomenal! We had never seen filet mignon Kafta, and it was so tender and flavorful! After this, we wouldn't ever want it any other way! Also hadn't seen hummus served with filet mignon on top. We got it spicy, and that was my favorite savory dish of the day!
