I was a little skeptical about Mexican food in Lakeview, but I was pleasantly surprised that the food I had was truly Mexican food and not Americanized Mexican food. I had the beef with vegetable soup and the Carne Asada plate cooked medium rare. My friend had the Chicken with vegetable soup. The flavors were on point and the steak was cooked perfectly medium rare. The complimentary chips plus salsa was also delicious and had a kick to it. Service was attentive and kind. Only complaint is the meat in my beef and veggie soup was a bit sparse compared to the ton of chicken in my friend's chicken and veggie soup. Good food for a cheap price. I think our bill was under $40 and we got an appetizer, two entrees, and a pina colada. The guacamole was OK, seemed like it was missing lime juice/salt. The entrees were very delicious and the pina colada was amazing. The complimentary chips were ok but the green sauce was nice and spicy, we used that to top off our entrees. I got the bistek a la mexicana and my gf got the chicken fajitas. I really loved my dish and I think she liked her chicken fajitas. It seems to be BYOB, but this was a random pick for dinner. Oh, Gawd. Every time I get excited about trying one of the umpteen untested dives in my neighborhood, I always get burned. Rarely do I have luck at these icky little Mexican food places. My Sunday lunch started well. The waiter--no older than 16--was really nice and attentive. The interior was clean and tidy; the place was nearly full but the service never went down. I thought, Great...I finally found a place that might be my fave cheap Mexican restaurant. The good feelings ended about the fifth bite into my Burrito Suizo when I found a bone mixed in with the below par chopped "steak." A few bites more, and I hit a large patch of gristle. Oh, no...I started to seriously wonder if this meat came from a cow or some poor three-legged animal that came too close to the restaurant's back door. So I asked the waiter to take back the Burrito Suizo Meat Surprise and bring me a simple cheese burrito--no sauces, no sides of beans or rice. Just a plain ol' burrito. Well, that's what I got. A burrito filled with nothing but shredded cheddar cheese. Oh, joy. And that's how the meal ended. read more

They have the absolutely best salsa!! I have tried a lot of places in the area and this really has enough kick that doesn't completely burn your tongue. Next time I might buy a jar of it (saw that they actually sell jars on the online menu). It's a pretty small restaurant so I usually will order takeout. The food is always ready to pick up whenever I go so I have never had to wait for it. Prices are lower than Ceasar's which is only a couple blocks away and the food just tastes better. In the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago we're lucky to have so many great cafe's, bars and restaurants so when a spot stands out amongst its peers that's saying something. There is nothing I can't rave about when it comes to Buena Vista. A true family run place that's been in the neighborhood for about 15 years, give or take, I believe. We have been around the neighborhood for most of our lives and this was one of my ma's favorite spots. She loved the fact that it's all about family here and you can feel it when you walk through the door. She used to like to dine ala cart, a little of this and a little of that and a little doggy bag at the end, you can do that at Buena Vista. When we all get together in the neighborhood we can be a crazy little family and at times can be difficult but these folks always treated us so well and knew how to handle our craziness. We always bicker and argue like family does and they seem to smile knowingly. Like ma used to say "that's just how we do it". Because it is truly a family run business with mother and father, their kids and extended family working the floor, register, kitchen etc. they know how to treat people as family. It seems they always make time to come out to the dining room and say hello to visit with customers. To be treated like they matter to people means the world. It meant the world to my family I know that. It is cool to see their family and kids grow up over the years whenever in for dinner and hearing about their experiences and successes. I can't say enough about these folks! The food is outstanding and they keep the menu relatively short yet what they do offer they do really well. We always started out with the guacamole which is always fresh. I'm a soup guy myself and the caldo de pollo and pazole are incredible seasoned just right and with enough to take home. I've had everything from the tortas and burritos to the dinner entrees and have never once been disappointed. There is something to be said for freshness and quality and here they have both. You can taste the fresh in everything you taste. There is a great little patio to dine on and take in the urban landscape and you simply cannot beat the BYOB. You have to make sure you get their just in time on weekends because they understandably get packed quickly. The decor is clean and inviting with the walls representative of the Mexican culture. This place is a traditional neighborhood upscale Mexican cuisine spot. I still stop in from time to time with my little brother and occasionally my sister. It brings back wonderful family memories as we make new ones. Soon my daughter and her family will be going there. I took myself out to a sit down dinner tonight and i'm so glad I chose Buena Vista! I was craving Mexican and had walked by this place in Lakeview a bunch of times. It's definitely a hole in the wall, there's only like ten tables so I would caution against going during peak dinner times. The waiter was really nice when I came in and I love how they give you free chips and two types of salsa. The prices were really reasonable conspired to most places in Lincoln Park/Lakeview, I got a huge plate of enchiladas, beans and rice for $11. The food was great too! It's also BYOB which myself and everyone around me seemed to be taking advantage of. The table next to me brought margarita mix and tequila which I thought was inspired. The food I ordered from Buena Vista was delicious. I discovered this restaurant via Grub Hub. Any time I've ordered from Grub Hub it's been hit or miss so I didn't have any expectations from Buena Vista. I was impressed by the selection that they had to offer. They offer many of the traditional dishes that a lot of the Mexican restaurants in the area don't offer. The food was delivered a little bit earlier then projected so we were excited. My boyfriend wasn't 100% sold on the restaurant so he ordered tacos but he was thoroughly impressed when he tried them. For a $2.50 taco they were absolutely delicious. We were a little surprised that the tacos were delivered on paper plates when they first arrived but the plates kept them from getting shuffled around during delivery. I ordered the steak burrito along with a steak taco. I wanted to see how the tacos tasted since I knew my boyfriend wouldn't want to share if they were delicious haha. The tacos were good but I'd definitely recommend putting the sauce on it because it'll help moisten the meat. I was extremely impressed with the burrito! From the first bite it was warm, extremely moist, and so flavorful. I would highly recommend the burrito because it's the most bang for your buck and you won't be disappointed. I didn't get the burrito with the mole sauce so I can't comment on that one but from all the photos on Yelp it seems like a popular item. If you order beverages they deliver the drinks in a cooler to keep them chilled. That's a great touch because having warm food and a cold drink gives you the effect of being at the restaurant. This is a really cute little Mexican place on Broadway. There are probably 10 tables altogether. I came in with a bitchin' hangover and mowed down on the chips and both kinds of salsa-- the red is a little spicier than the verde but both have a serious kick and are delicious. For my entree I had the steak flautas. They were pretty good but I blame myself for not ordering something dripping in cheese given my current tragic state. That's on me though, not them! I really enjoyed the dollop of guacamole on my plate as well as the refried beans. I've had bland renditions of both items before and that definitely wasn't the case here. Service was fine too-- she kept my water glass refilled and remembered not to put sour cream on my meal so I was more than satisfied. I definitely liked this place and will go back again for sure when I'm running errands in Lakeview. I think maybe I could have done a better job ordering but I'd like to give them another chance. I've had their mole which is fantastic as well followed by their chips and salsa which is amazing. You really can't go wrong here. The wife and I decided on the nachos as an app and then I got a burrito al pastor. The nachos were better than your average pub's nachos and the burrito was very good, but a little low on meat. I only got the a la carte option but it's huge and certainly more than enough for lunch. My wife ordered a chicken and an al pastor taco. They were ok, but nothing you can't get at just about any Mexican place. Overall it's a good option for a quickish lunch or dinner. Came here expecting good things, and we ate good things :) Delicious chips & salsa: the chips were firm enough to hold the salsa and crispy enough to get a satisfying crunch without any excess oil or salt. Both salsas were hot, but I loved the salsa verse better. The Queso Fundido was as fun to eat as it looked: the breakable fried tortilla shell played double duty as bowl/chips and the queso was creamy and flavorful. The chorizo added enough heat to boost the bite in the cheese. The Enchiladas Verdes was a delicious blend of chicken, corn tortillas, a delicious sauce, and topped with green salsa, cheese and sour cream. The sauce and toppings were not overwhelming the tortillas (they stayed firm and not soggy), and the rice and beans were light and savory. The Steak Fajitas dinner was just my style! It came out sizzling on a skillet, the crisp thick cut veggies and tender chunks of steak covered with a delectable glaze was the dish I was looking for! It took eight corn tortillas to finish the platter; the rice and beans were on point here as well. For dessert, we received a $free$ Nieve Frita for checking in on Yelp, and just like to entrees, this ice cream was a very large portion! I have never tried this before and I enjoyed the contrast in textures from crispy shell to velvety center.
