This store really sucks. We brought a bag of really nice cool clothes and they took none. So we said ok, then lets buy some items. we walked around the store and we noticed that the clothes was really expensive for a second hand store. The employees were very rude and not friendly. They don't even got style themselves, they want brand names, either S M or L. Sorry plus size people, don't even waste your time because the clothes are too big. But if you got clothes that are costume like vintage, boring generic "white people" clothes (brand name of course) this is your spot! I like this Buffalo. You have to go here with reasonable expectations though. I have a bunch of large suits that I own because I'm an immigrant and I internalized my parents' belief that I would never stop growing into things. So, when it came time to clean up my closet because I got some nice things that fit, these suits, as good condition as they were in, went to Salvation and Goodwill, along with shoes, which are hard to come by for men my size. There's some things you just need to donate which while they may not do well for your wallet, will benefit others. There's a variety of organizations, from public assistance to health to programs for people with lupus, all of which could benefit from someone having a fresh pair of business clothes for interviews or for their day-job. Your Costco leather jacket as well. So all that stuff you have that you're parting with that is in that frame, there are wonderful places for it. Buffalo is for your chambray shirts, your unique but not ridiculous patterns, and, in a very basic way, casual wear. And a good way to think about what they buy is to take a look around the neighborhood that particular Buffalo operates in, and see what most people wear. When they buy, they have quality in mind, but they also have in mind what they can actually sell where they are. This can explain a lot of the variance from neighborhood to neighborhood. So I was able to sell some shirts that, honestly, when I'm out of shape, I just can't fit into. They were my goal shirts (as in, when I lose weight, I'll fit into these), but instead I just bought larger shirts, because that's how I address obstacles in my life. Essentially, these are things that I was okay parting with. They looked nice, they were good quality, still had color in them, but they just were literally a bad fit for me. It was really nice that Buffalo bought some, and since they are having a coat drive next week, I was able to donate some coats which they couldn't buy (because it looks like they really do have a ton of winter stock). Different sellers have different personal tastes. For men, it's fairly easy to sell things because if you're a guy in the Mission, you either currently wear stuff you can sell there, or the entire idea of places to sell your clothes confuses you. Basically, it's hard for a guy to live here, and blend somewhat into the neighborhood, and not have something in the wardrobe that they would take depending on season. For women, there's a wider span of styles and personalities, so it can be a little bit more of a challenge. So, that shirt and those shoes that one seller really was into, another one might really dislike. And they're all gearing it towards the curating of the store, but there's also a little bit of personal discretion in there. So, you might have variance between sellers, but again, I think the best marker to go by is look at the sort of things most people in the neighborhood in the Buffalo demographic, even specifically just going down Valencia or 18th on a packed day, are wearing. If you have a unique, or strong quality version of that, that's probably your best shot. To be honest, though, I've always thought of selling clothes as 'maybe I'll get a few bucks instead of nothing, and maybe I won't. Either way, my current value for them is nothing since I don't wear them, even though I would like to, they're just occupying my closet and I think someone else would wear them way more often and really, really like them.' So when they decided to sell a shirt for 15 bucks or 22 bucks, and they give me 4 dollars or 7 dollars, I feel like 'look at these nice people, giving me a free case of beer!' That's selling. I hope it's helpful. As for buying, I've found I really like their t-shirts. I was really surprised by the quality of two shirts I bought the other week. One was a vintage motorcycle event shirt, it was a muted olive-green, made in Japan, lots of images on it. It fit great, and I really like it. It was 7 bucks, which is fantastic. It's really hard to find a t-shirt that looks unique that is actually unique as opposed to one of thousands of prints. So I liked that I was able to do that. They have another shirt which was actually half off, this blue, long-sleeve, hooded shirt, and again, it fit just right and it's my favorite shirt now. With discounts, it was ten bucks. They have some beautiful casual button-downs, though they really range in costs and fit. The jeans section for men is definitely more prominently focused on the sizes 34 and below. So, you'll get more variety if you're in that group than not. Again, these are the sizes most people wear. In really active years, I might imagine that I wore them too. I got some big red Converse shoes here. They were reasonably priced. So, expectations are important, and the particulars of your taste are too. I liked this place a lot. I have never been in a buffalo exchange before. Where I am from we have a clothing resell place called freestyle. This place was very similar but a bit more expensive. There wasn't a whole lot of selection for girls Large and up but the jewelry section was great! My husband ended up picking up me a beautiful necklace for about $12 and that was defiantly worth it. He picked up an h&m sweater that was $12 and too high priced in my opinion but he liked it. Lots of selection here and the people were really nice. One word: Racist. I dont usually give 1 star ratings and I'm usually lenient with my reviews, but my experience here SUCKED. I came in with my sister to sell a BUNCH of clothes. From my sister's batch, they picked absolutely nothing, and from mine, my Van's bowling bag. I honestly felt a little racism going on here. The day we went in, it was pretty busy at the line where you sell your clothes. There were about 4 people in front of us, all non asians. It took soooo long for us to get our turn but in the meantime, I was observing what they were picking out from the other customers and I thought, Hmm, I'm pretty confident they'll take some of my stuff after looking at the other stuff they took from other customers. Sooo, it's finally my sister's turn and they made her dump her clothes out on the counter so they can ''look'' at what she has. I say "look'' cuz I was watching the guy, who had no kind of emotion in his face btw, that was helping her and he barely even looked at her stuff, he was basically just picking it up and tossing it back in the bag like it was some kind of dirty laundry. Finally, he was like ''Unfortunately, we're not gonna buy anything today." My sister then looked at me and gave me an ''oh well'' shoulder shrug. Then it was my turn, they did the EXACT same thing as if my stuff was some kind of dirty laundry. They finally picked out my Van's purse and bought it for 22 and i got like what 6 bucks back? Whatevs. I took the cash because I was definitely not coming back to this location. Honestly, most of my stuff were super nice and most were worn only a few times. This goes for my shoes, heels, belts, pants, shirts, dresses, skirts that I was trying to sell. Some of my items still had tags on them. Yes, I brought in a variety of clothes only to get NOTHING picked and when I was watching the things they were picking from other ''non asian'' ppl, my stuff was definitely waaaay better. They were picking some grandma looking clothing, but picked absolutely nothing from mine. The lifeless guy was even like, "Unfortunately, you dont have anything we're looking for thats fitting for this season." You mean, summer? Cuz I couldve sworn i had a lot of nice blouses, racerbacks, skirts, dresses, floral stuff that are super fitting for the summer. WHATEVER. The thing that pisses me off even more is that they're a thrift store, a PICKY thrift store. I mean, give me a break, YOURE A THRIFT STORE. Call it what you want, but when it comes down to it, thats what this store is. I'm sure I can sell my stuff for waaay more at a garage sale and ppl will be more than happy to buy it. The selection is hit or miss. For the past few years its been mostly miss. Selling here isn't the greatest experience. I sold here once after going to a job interview and I got some subtle snottiness about being "traditional". Whe I sell here and I show up in my skinny jeans with a flashdance style sweatshirt, I sell a lot more. Beware when browsing. I found a pair of jeans on the rack that had a ton of menstrual fluid in the crotch- seriously, I can't make that up. the best selling experience i've ever had. and not because they bought everything, cuz they didn't. now, i wasn't one of those hauling my junk in there, hoping to get enough cash to pay my rent or store credit to buy a new identity. seriously... suitcases, people?? so, of course they bought all my betsey pieces, but passed on some good nine west boots and enzo, prob too "conservative" for them hipsters... (i'm a career gal now and hung up my mission garb a while ago...) ha. it was the best experience because of their PEEPS! i observed as i waited for my turn to sell, (btw, odd set up, they don't give you a sign in sheet, so it's the honor system, which is kinda out of place in the mission? honor and system??) anyway, i digress, so i was waiting/observing and i was totally, pleasantly surprised that they were all so personable, genuinely engaged, and actually seemed appreciative that you are selling them inventory WHICH is the livelihood of their biz. wtf with these joints that make you feel like they are doing YOU a favor by buying your clothes? i mean really, their biz model exists because of us. the other places i've sold, these raggedly bitches that are prob just pissed that they can't poach your stuff cuz they look like they get the munchies way too often and down the pints at zeitgeist like it's water. MOST IMPORTANTLY, i was impressed by chris the manager who helped me, but i have to give total honorable mention (shoot, didn't get his name) but to the tall, thin guy with blond hair that was helping some chick that was... check this out, trying to sell two paper grocery bags full of panites. um... really?! and let's just say that it totally looked like she probably made some dirty dollars in them! ick. BUT that saint of a guy helping her, was so diplomatic and personable with her. dude, i have to say, i would have been, "what is wrong with you?!" this ain't the goodwill AND btw, goodwill doesn't even take your panties. some peeps... some tips... if you've designer stuff, professional garb, or overall stuff that looks like marina yahoos would wear, this prob ain't the best place to try and sell it. if you have outdated stuffs, especially for those of us over 30, some kid in the mission will think it's "retro" and buy it. sad, but true. also, seems like this joint is the best if you are selling kooky stuff; i.e. accessories, bandeau (really??) tops, screen tees, pseudo hip hop/hipster/skater/bad suburban sport gear stuff, like anything converse, puma, adidas (maybe), but prob not nike or under armour, that's too marina-esque. shoes, def should be in good condition, but that's luck of the draw, i saw everything from betsey to soda (cheapy) to colin stuart (total VS line, that's victoria secret's) other brands i saw (amusingly so), h&m (really? just buy yourself some new shit, how much cheaper can you go?) oh well, now that i think of it, target brands were there too! funny to see j crew in the mix, not a fan, but suppose for those hipsters that are interviewing, would buy it?? i did see one sweet marc jacobs jacket, but at $38 for someone else's stuff, hmm.... you can check out ideeli, blue fly, rue la la, loehmann's and get it new for not much more... overall, i would plug this place and it is the first buy/sell store i ever have recommended. good luck selling your crap, i mean stuff. ;) read more

I went there yesterday and the day before, both days to browse, but could not resist making purchases. Naughty... really irritating experience. I called because that's what the website said to do to see the process as it was my first time. She said to come on in and they price clothes based on quality and brand. I said great, I have tons of stuff, thinking I'll come out a winner. I had over 5 bags of clothes folded and ready to be sold - GOOD, name brand clothes - didn't care what they gave me for them, just wanted them to go somewhere. I got there, waited over 30 minutes in line as they took their time with the customers ahead laughing and then stopping to help other customers in between. Finally, my turn. I get to the counter and start taking out my clothes. Of the 200 pieces I put in front of her, she gave me back all but 3 pieces. Huh? You are picking what you want? Nobody told me this. I'm surprised to see so many negative reviews about the selling experience here. I've unloaded stuff here a couple of times, and that's pretty much the way I see it: I'm getting rid of some shit I don't want anymore. I can either do it here, where it's convenient and I might get something in exchange; or I can drop it at Goodwill. I've never felt "judged" by the buyers - if anything, they tend to be chattier than is really necessary, almost as if they're trying to overcompensate for not taking what is, once again, your castaways. Whatever, it's not like you come here to make friends or have your ego stroked. Either way, the selection and prices here are hard to beat. I've stopped in to get a dress to wear to a wedding, sweats for yoga class, shoes, work clothes, you name it. No matter what I have in mind when I walk in, I find it, it's nice, and it's cheap. And actually, some of the stuff I've gotten here is just unbelievable: I scored an awesome Minnie Wilde jacket for $24, a really cute MJ miniskirt for $18, etc. I don't even set foot in Anthropologie anymore because I can just come here and get whatever I would have gotten there for a tenth of the price. I'm used to being treated like shit. I've bartended. I've worked downtown. I've dated musicians. So, what a pleasant surprise to get no attitude at the Valencia Buffalo Exchange. The buyers are mellow, the cashiers sweet, and the dressing room helpers helpful. I think the selection is great and there's a ton of turnover. I don't think you'll find any amazing deals, but the prices are fair when you find something good. Yesterday I scored three fancy tank tops, two adorable sweaters, and a wink from a hipster 10 years my jr all for $73. read more

This place deserves a NEGATIVE 10 star rating. I just brought 5 bags of Lululemon clothing, some designer clothing and shoes to this place. The total value of my clothes and shoes was well over $600. I am talking brand new with tag items and didn't even get $100 for all of my stuff. The black LAMB booties alone are brand new, in season and cost $400, they are in their box with the dustbag. New in their box Nike Shox worth $200, Lulu clothing that is all in season, size 4! I am so disgusted by how ripped off I just got from this place. I had no hope for my old clothes, that I haven't worn for a while. But, thankfully I remembered my friend told me about Buffalo Exchange, not to long ago. And thought what did I have to loose. The staff was really friendly and explained how it all went down, from signing in and how they determine if your clothes are qualified for re-selling. So, they didn't take everything I had... but that's all good. I could have gotten 40 bucks in cash, but wanted to check the spot around. And I stumpled uppon some Coach shoes. This is my favorite location in San Francisco. The staff is really nice and it isn't super crowded if you wanna sell your stuff. I usually get really good deals. I like that there isn't a bunch of tourists here (like on the Haight). In comparision, I think that this location has a lot better street wear (tees, jackets, flannels) and the one on Haight has "nicer" work wear. read more

This buffalo exchange was really small and the shoes were so disorganized it was ridiculous. I've found out that the best exchanges are in trendy neighborhoods; that being said this neighborhood has little going for it so this exchange was a reflection of that. There wasn't a vibrant selection of anything and I went through every freaking rack! Skip this one and go to the one in the Haight, it's so much better read more

I hate to say it, but this is one of the lesser locations for Buffalo Exchange. Too bad it's the one closest to where I live. The clothes feel much more second-hand and worn than other locations and things are poorly displayed. With so many other options out there for thrift stores (especially the HUGE Salvation Army just blocks away), it doesn't make much sense to shop here. However, I'm still giving it two stars because they have very nice staff. read more

I'm there all the time, and I snatch up all the bangin' size 4 jeans...ha! Ok, so the bad stuff first. I will never again waste my time bagging up all my old clothes and then separating them into a stack that I am going to take to B.E. because I think they might buy them; they won't. Also, although the staff can be very friendly and the music is cool, there is occasionally a whiff of the very distinct odor of "I'm cooler than thou" floating around...also, the prices are edging up into the realm of unreasonable. I paid $29 bucks for a frock that would have been on sale at Wet Seal or something for like $11.99, but then I guess that's my fault for avoiding places like Wet Seal. i came here hoping to get a little cash for some clothes i wasn't using anymore. i brought two pairs of jeans (one Gap, one Clairborne Men's), and Old Navy thermal, an Old Navy polo shirt, and a KREW allover print hoodie. I admit, the thermal and the clairborne jeans were faded, so i wasn't expecting them to buy it, i just wanted to get rid of it. So after having the woman check through my clothes, she only decided to buy my Gap jeans for only $12, but since you only get 35% of the selling price, I got $4.20. I was kinda bummed that they didn't buy my Old Navy polo, it was only last season and worn once. They really look for high-ended brands, i guess. They do have a pretty good selection of jeans, though. I was really surprised to see some Obey jeans, and a couple from Hundreds and Recon. I really was tempted to get a pair of Obey jeans, but it made me think just HOW used they were, if they were indeed used. I noticed that they were selling a pair of Vans Rob Williams Chukka shoes, and being a fan of Vans shoes, I knew that they were released in Fall 2007. But they weren't in great condition, creases all around and the rubber underneath was getting worn down. So it really made me wonder if this store was really looking for good condition, current style clothes, or anything that just looks nice but still used. I'll probably come back in the future to sell some clothes, but probably not faded ones like i tried to do. read more

This is my favorite Bay Area Buffalo. The one on Haight is so freakishly picked over and it's on Haight so it's just all around stressful and packed. The Berkeley one is fine and usually I find good stuff there, but maybe it's just the ambiance of the Mission and the fact that there are other promised little Mecca's of clothing lying just blocks ahead that makes this particular Buffalo superior to the rest. I have never had a problem with Buffalo's pricing, but I know others have. But if you think about it, this stuff has been selected pretty carefully, is in almost brand new condition, and is about a fourth of the price of what it retails fully. Don't take issue with Buffalo for offering you very REASONABLE marked down prices, take issue with the original manufacturers for selling so high. Or the economy. Just blame the economy. read more

Had a good experience selling unwanted clothes, shoes and jewelry that were in almost new shape. They were courteous, helpful and fairly efficient. I didn't make a lot given all they took but it will pay for a nice dinner and bottle of wine! read more

My experience is similar to others on here: brought in some fairly expensive, gently used clothes from some grown up brands and all of it was rejected. What got me was that he did it entirely based on the labels. He wasn't looking at the clothes themselves, just looked at the label and threw it into a "no" pile.
