The next waitress was just as bad. until I walked out with a table full of untouched food did a so-called manager appear. With filthy and stained clothes he claimed to have just come but still in the waitrer's form uniform. Obviously not a manager. Argued with me on the street screaming and yelling about paying a bill for food I did not eat. Threatening to call the police because I refuse to pay A bill for horrible for frozen food. Love Buff's. This is just a quintessential neighborhood bar that happens to have the best wings I have ever had. I've also taken numerous friends from all around the country here and every time they leave satisfied and raving about the wings. It can get a little crowded at dinner time and on game days, but just put your name in and grab a spot at the bar and your table will be ready in no time. Buff's isn't great for groups of more than 4 so be ready to split up if need be. It is also cash only but the prices are so reasonable compared to other wing spots. The servers are always running around like crazy so be prepared for a unique dinner experience. Get the wings. Can not emphasize this enough. They are massive and juicy and so consistent. 10 wings and a side will usually fill me up (the onion rings are incredible). Honey hot is my personal favorite sauce, although I have enjoyed all the sauces except for the maple hot is a little funky for me. I was craving Chicken Wings so I decided to go to Buff's Pub for lunch. Not a fan of the service. There were not many people there and it took at least ten minutes before I saw a server to get their attention to take my order. I ordered a half order (probably 10 wings) of Chicken Wings, mild, extra crispy. The wings are good size, had a nice crisp to them, just lacking in the flavor department. The wings are the best that I have had in Boston. But if these same wings were served in Buffalo, they would be considered average, if that. I love Buff's. The wait and cash-only policy are both pains in the ass and the only reason I held back on five stars. When you finally get seated, the service and atmosphere are exactly what you will have been looking for. Lots of locals, lots of sports fan (this is Boston, after all), and amazing food. The wings here rival the best in the city. So juicy and big and perfectly crispy. There are great sauce options if you're into that. Apps are also a nice starter to any of the great pub-fare options you'll get here - awesome skins, fried pickles, poppers. The onion rings as a side to any of the well portioned sandwich/burger options are also really amazing with the side of delicious dipping sauce. You come to Buff's for one thing - wings. They are unmatched in the Boston area. I've only had better wings at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, where they were supposedly invented. My preference: Honey Hot (a perfect combination of honey and hot sauce) and a Miller High Life. I went to college in Buffalo where wings are a religion. The wings at Buff's are the genuine article - hot, crispy, tasty, served with celery and real blue cheese dressing. We have tried many places in Boston for wings and Buff's is the best. They usually overload their order - more than 10 wings in a single and more than 20 in a double. Other places fail the Buffalo standard for the following reasons: - Only one type of sauce, generally 'hot'. Buff's has a wide range. - No Celery. This is quite simply a sin. - No Blue Cheese dressing, only Ranch or often nothing. - Wings are not crisped up, I believe this is because they only bake them, not bake and broil. Best wings I've had in Boston. If they delivered, I would eat my body weight in them at least once a week. Mild or medium if you're not into heat, but even the hot buffalo isn't so spicy that it drowns out the flavor. Wings are big, meaty and taste fresh. They also make a MEAN French onion soup that deserves to get more love here. Service can sometimes be a bit spotty, but if you're very friendly to the staff, they are quite nice. Being a native Buffalonian, I know wings. If you're unfortunate enough to be born in Buffalo, your first food (after the bottle/breast) will likely be a hot wing. Don't get me wrong, Buffalo will always be my home town, my heart resides there, and it's a great place to be from... with the operative word being "from." Most high school kids can't wait to get the hell out of there, and rightfully so. But I digress... Just for the record - in Buffalo, they're just called "wings" (not "Buffalo wings" - there's no need to specify, since your arse is sitting in Buffalo). They are typically served hot, medium, or mild, with lots of places also offering other options like barbeque and suicidal (translated into Boston-ese: wicked hot). Only babies and the elderly order their wings mild. Everyone else orders at least medium, and truth be told, if you're a real man, you order your wings hot or suicidal. Thankfully, I'm a woman so I can get away with ordering medium. Most "Buffalo-style" stuff (prepared somewhere other than Buffalo) tastes like a mild wing at best... some places rise to the challenge and manage a medium, but that's pretty rare. And also - there's no such thing as "boneless wings" - those are called chicken tenders. And yes - in Buffalo, you can get them hot, medium, mild, barbeque, or any other of the myriad of styles that wings come in - but they're not "boneless wings." They're chicken tenders. Wings should have bones. That's one of the defining characteristics of the chicken wing. Everything else is just chicken. Lastly, in Buffalo, wings are almost always served with their party-food soul-mate, pizza. Pizza and wings. Pizza and wings. Pizza and wings. Say it with me. Like a mantra. Those two belong together... one is just not fully complete without the other. Of course, the crap that passes for pizza here is a joke. So maybe just go with the wings. It's laughable to me - the type of thing that gets labelled a "buffalo wing" here in Boston, or anywhere other than Buffalo, for that matter. Soggy, meatless, no flavor... the list goes on and on. However, Buff's gets it just about right. My husband can rightfully be called a Wing Connoisseur, and he gives Buffs wings a hearty, manly, dripping-with-hot-sauce thumbs-up. Me - I'm partial to the honey hots, and I'm more likely to order them in chicken-tender form, as I find wings pretty messy and I dislike having my fingernails stained bright orange. Tenders you can eat with a knife and fork, thus avoiding most of the mess (although if you scarf them down like I do, you'll have at least one token orange splotch on your shirt). This place has a cool, laid-back, neighborhood dive bar vibe. The perfect place to kick back and watch a game - although good luck getting a table on a Sox game night. Tucked behind a rotary off of the Mass Pike, in a virtual no-man's land on the Newton/Watertown line, Buff's pub is a small bar with a big reputation for tasty Buffalo wings. Listening to people go on about Buff's makes it sound like some sort of Mecca for Buffalo wings in Boston. Like it is the duty of every able-bodied Boston Buffalo wing fanatic to make the trip to Buff's for wings at least once before they die. As an urban snob, I generally have no interest in going to a bar that I need to drive to - even if it is only 10-minutes outside the city. It is not out of concern for the environment or even a drunk driving prevention. I just like the city and can't accept that something so great would be located outside of Boston. Since Buff's Pub is widely considered to be Boston's answer to the legendary Anchor Bar (the unconfirmed birthplace of the Buffalo Wing) I suppose I should be thankful that it is only 5.8 miles from my doorstep. Buffalo is so low on the list of cities I want to visit that the only way I could see myself making it to the actual Anchor Bar is if I were flying somewhere and my plane crashed in the area. And even then I would probably just watch the Bills lose to the Patriots and then call it a night. But I digress, back to Buff's. Buff's Pub is probably the most nondescript restaurant we've reviewed so far. If you're not looking for it, you will probably walk right by the door as there are no signs in the windows or even features on the façade to tell passersby that there are spicy wings and frosty beers on the other side of the plain, plate glass windows. There is only a small entryway underneath gold, almost two-dimensional letters, spelling out: B u f f ' s P u b. I generally try to approach a wing review with an open mind and an empty stomach, but for the first time I really wanted to dislike the wings I was about to review. When people put something on such a high pedestal, you naturally want to be the one to knock it off. Or is that just me? I wanted to laugh at the next person who asked me about Buff's and explain why any one of ten wing joints in the city has Buff's beat for a multitude of reasons. Every so often, something that it hyped to the moon turns out to live up to that hype. Many reviewers and many people have said that Buff's has the best wings around. I love wings. I really love wings. They are one of my guilty pleasures. Needless to say, my expectations were very high the first time I went to Buff's. And I'll be damned, they lived up to the hype. Big, meaty, perfectly cooked, just the right amount of spiciness. But as I much as I liked the buffalo wings, the honey hot wings were a revelation. A perfect mix of heat and sweetness, they are now one of my absolute favorite food items. Where have they been my whole life? A couple of notes, it can be hard to find parking here.
