What I got was pretty impressive: a gentle patty, cooked to the medium rare I chose, and served on the seeded rye I chose, along with grilled onions, cheese, and a sauce sort of in the ketchup-and-mayo neighborhood. Good textures and taste, especially the beef. Only minor quibble was the minimal butter. Mini cup of coleslaw extra creamy. Pickle spear a nice palate cleanser. We back. I came here with my parents and it was soo good. The Nutella & Berries French Toast has easily become my go-to (can you blame me? I mean look at that beauty). I never thought that this would happen where this restaurant became mediocre but today had the turkey dinner. It was huge three huge slices of turkey, but I think it's deli, turkey sliced thick. This place is 50's style starting with the exterior of the luncheonette right down to the counter and booths. I set down at the counter and had to wait for server. The man responsible for the booths also handled the counter. I had an omelette with cantaloupe, no toast or hash browns. The substitution was free. I had the south of the border omelette; salsa, guacamole, jalapeño peppers and cheese. The omelette had to be three eggs. I don't know what they do to get them so fluffy. I am an old school diner guy and I LOVE this place. First time there (last week), I had the classic Benny with home fries and it was perfect. Next time (today), the Diner scramble with lox & onions and cantaloupe and it blew my mind. This will be a weekly go-to for me. Each time I've been here, I've gotten street parking within 2 storefronts, the staff has been fantastic, and the music is righteous - mostly classic stuff from the 70s and 80s but not the most obvious stuff (for example, instead of ABBA's "Dancing Queen" they played "Take a Chance On Me", "Morning Train (Nine to Five)" by Sheena Easton), loud enough to hear and quiet enough to not fight conversation or talking with your server. We didn't have to wait too long for a table and took some time deciding what to get. The menu has great variety it was difficult to choose because I wanted to try so many dishes. I opted for the truffle Benny that came with side of potatoes as well as pancakes and tater tots to share. The Benedict was cooked perfectly with oozing egg yolk and had crispy potatoes. The pancakes are huge, super sweet, and fluffy. The service was quick even during the busy brunch rush. I'll definitely be back to try an omelette and a one of their mini milkshakes. The interior decor is enhanced by the class photos from the local junior high school. You just feel a welcoming and charming vibe as soon as you enter. We easily found metered street parking a few storefronts from the restaurant entrance. We arrived as a party of 5 on a Tuesday morning and had no trouble getting a larger booth in the back. No waiting. The server promptly greeted us and served hot coffee for everyone in our party. The breakfast options are plentiful. I ordered The Waverly - two potato latkes served with two eggs any style (scrambled) and sliced smoked salmon, sour cream and grilled tomatoes. It is definitely a lot of food for one person, which makes this entree sharable in my opinion. My dining companion ordered the chicken and waffles. Solid entree and very filling. Service was attentive, but not overpowering and allowed our group to enjoy the conversation. I was really excited to try Johnny's Luncheonette with my family because it has a cute, classic diner vibe. Unfortunately, the experience was pretty disappointing.When we first arrived, it wasn't very clear where we were supposed to go, and the staff seemed to look at us oddly rather than offering any guidance. Once we found our table, the menu actually looked great, there were plenty of options and no complaints there. The biggest issue was the service. Our waitress gave off unfriendly vibes and made us feel like we were a burden rather than welcomed guests. On top of that, there was a strong unpleasant odor throughout the restaurant that reminded us of a porta potty, which made the experience even less enjoyable. Overall, it was a letdown because I had high hopes and really wanted this to become a place we'd return to. Unfortunately, based on this visit, I don't think we'll be coming back. read more

We did a lunch delivery from Johnny's today and everything went very well. We ordered four sandwiches, an order of waffles (they serve breakfast all day) and sides of sweet potato fries. I had zero complaints with my Turkey Club because every layer was perfect -the toast, the right amount of mayo, the lettuce, the nice tomato slices, the generous slabs of excellent bacon, and most of all the turkey. It was a very generous sized sandwich, served with a pickle slice and container of slaw. This restaurant has become a favorite for me during COVID. Easy, inexpensive delivery and any special instructions I note are always followed. The bags also come stapled shut which I appreciate. Also, if you like small but kind efforts, they always write my name nicely with marker on the side which I enjoy. :) Now to the food... I've tried a bunch of different things including lox and bagel, Huevos rancheros, "the deli" scrambled eggs with lox, "green eggs and ham" (I get without ham I'm vegetarian) with eggs, spinach, and pesto, the Florentine Benny, and the potato latkes. The latkes are really amazing. The bagel and lox is an easy, straightforward go to, and I like the unique egg scrambles they have. Pesto and eggs -- who knew it was so good. They also have surprisingly delicious coffee! It would be great if they had more bagel variety, and the eggs Benedict didn't have great hollandaise, but this certainly won't deter me from continuing to order here! I've met a friend at Johnny's for breakfast a couple of times. The servings are so large that we always split something. The kitchen folks have been kind enough to split the food in the kitchen and it's served on two plates. Earlier this week I had lunch there. Best tuna melt I've ever had! Why? I have absolutely no idea, but it was delicious. There's a choice of breads for the sandwich, and I selected challah. Yummy! It was a large sandwich, so I ate less than half and took the rest with me. I just ate part of the second half, and it's still just as good. Go to Johnny's Luncheonette! Get the tuna melt! They have plenty of seating both inside and outside, so even though we came during what is probably peak time on Saturday morning, we didn't have to wait at all. Their menu includes most of the classic breakfast items but also has some more interesting non-standards. I had the pastrami scramble and my breakfast buddy had the caprese omelette, both with home fries and toast. The breakfasts here are big, and can really fill you up for two meals. Both my scramble and the caprese omelette were good. The home fries were okay, pretty standard, and I prefer hash browns generally so it would be nice to have that option. Toast options are plentiful, though, and they give you quite a lot. Service is quick and food comes out fast. Overall this is a solid standard spot for breakfast. read more

In our continual quest to find me cheese blintzes, we found Johnny's while in the Boston area. We arrived just before they opened and took that time to look over the menu and verify there were blintzes, which of course there were. We were the first ones seated and the place got busy really quickly. I decided to get the combo which had two blintzes, crunchy French toast, eggs and bacon, and substituted the eggs and bacon for turkey bacon. Hubby also got the crunchy French toast entrée and a griddled blueberry muffin on the side. My blintzes were pretty dry and crumbly, but the French toast was packed with texture and flavor, and alongside the perfect turkey bacon, really were the stars of breakfast. Hubby thought so too and we scarfed them down. Two stars. The blueberry muffin took literally an hour to get to us because the waitress forgot and then we reminded her, and she forgot again. She was visibly distracted, talking with other waitresses and checking her phone quite a bit. It was hard to get her attention for coffee and the bill. Once the muffin did arrive, it was dense, hard, and really mealy, probably one of the worst muffins I've ever had. Service was poor, and attentiveness was pretty much nonexistent. Also one of the kitchen staff was late for opening, and all the cooks clapped loudly for him once he did walk in. They then joshed around with him, and made like they were going to put his face in the waffle iron, which I thought was really unprofessional as the dining room looks into the kitchen from almost all sides. Prices were ok, location is good, and parking is plentiful. Food is hit or miss, and service is a definite miss. Would not come back here because there are so many more places who can do what Johnny's does, but better, more professionally, and with better quality. read more
