We came here because Nit Pixies was booked. They begin by combing to check for lice, which is $35, followed by a $90 treatment and de-lousing; combing with the special comb. The treatment is coating the hair with their conditioner which is very high in peppermint oil so it can sting, especially on young children. After the first treatment, they strongly recommend that you purchase all of their products, including shampoo, conditioner, roll on oil, and upholstery spray. All of these are completely unnecessary. They want you to use the shampoo/conditioner treatment every day for 4 days and then come back for a second treatment/follow up. They admit that using their products may irritate your scalp since both are very high in essential oils. As a comparison, Nit Pixies does not recommend any of this and their process is just as successful. read more

Ok - So, what would you pay to have someone else run their fingers through your child's lice infested head and treat it? And then what would you pay to have that treatment be all natural without harsh chemicals and carcinogens? Calling Bug-a-lugz was a no brainer for me. I specifically chose this place because they advertise the use of natural essential oils. The kids I took enjoyed the cooling sensation that the peppermint oil gave them, especially when I told them that I was envious, that I too enjoyed that cleansing feeling on my scalp and usually bought mint shampoos especially for that reason. (I, in fact, bought some of the conditioner for my own hair - partly preventative, but mostly because I LOVE the smell!). Sure, it's not cheap but what ALL natural, essential oil products are? I found the staff to be lovely and knowledgeable about lice and the treatment of them. Caring, professional help when I needed it. Maybe I could have done this myself at home for less but the real question is 'Would I have wanted to?'. HELL NO. Lice are GROSS! So if you or someone you know has a problem with these funky little critters and their gross little spawn, I suggest you call Bug-a-lugz immediately. They are great! p.s. The ladies here are very nice and explained that the treatment on our son's head was to loosen the lice eggs so they could be removed. There were so many that after trying to treat ourselves with chemicals, we headed right over. They found over 500 eggs and 24 adults. I love that after two treatments they were all gone and we could come back for free for 30 days if anything turned up. I sleep better knowing that they back up what they do. The only thing is that I would have liked to have purchased one of those metal combs but they do not sell them. read more

I brought my kids & myself here to get checked after my son had been itching for days. It's a very cute & kid friendly place. In the sitting area they have books, toys, chalk board, tv plus all the techs there are very sweet. My kids were scared to go there but once they experienced how good they were they calmed down & relaxed. For a head check its $35 a person (no discounts for other family members) if you have lice its $95 treatment which is about an hour & then you have to go again for a second treatment for another $95. They sell all their natural products that you "need" which was about $70. So it can be pretty pricey. They accept HSA/FSA as well :) read more

I totally recommend this place. I have tried to get rid of my daughters head lice for a while. Just when I think I've cracked it their back again. I wish I had gone straight to the salon rather than wasting my time and money trying to do it at home. My daughter was scared about getting treated in the salon and someone seeing her. Once inside the place she felt comfortable right away. The rooms are private with enough room for a few people. Bug-a-lugz is set up for kids, it is decorated in bright colors and has a great selection of movies to make the time pass quickly. I was happy the treatment took only half an hour as I didn't want to be there all day. We went back for the second treatment and are lice free. The staff were amazing and I can't believe the bad review. My only guess is that they didn't follow the advice about washing clothes backpacks vacuuming the furniture etc read more

Thank you Bug-a-lugz!! I was horrified when my daughter came home from school with lice. I spent hundreds of $$$ and HOURS trying to treat it at home. Then my husband and I ended up with them. Fortunately a friend referred me to Bug-a-lugz I was able to book an appointment right away. Yes, you do need to provide them with your credit card to hold the appointment and there is a cancellation fee. But that's standard practice at any salon. We went to their Bush Street location in SF - plenty of street parking. I was surprised to see how warm and cozy the place is and it's definitely kid friendly. The staff are friendly and were able to treat us at the same time. So we were done in less than an hour. After a follow-up visit, we are all lice free - yay! They do offer you their all-natural products. And after torturing my family with the toxins I used at home, this was definitely a relief. I didn't know we can ask our healthcare provider to cover some of the costs, but I'm going to ask about now. The staff at Bug-a-lugz are also experienced at doing lice checks at schools which I'm going to talk to our principal about. Thanks again. read more

When I called back to say I got an earlier appointment they suddenly said that I had to pay 50% for not coming in. "Fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice, shame on me." This review is not for the women who work in the salon as they were great. However, the prices we paid for the service rendered is crazy expensive. Family of 4 @ $100 each * 2 visits = $800 + $44 for shampoo & conditioner = $844. Each treatment took ~30 minutes which equates to about $200/hour and consisted of sectioning the hair, applying conditioner and combing it out with a metal lice comb. I just bought the same comb on Amazon for $10 and noticed they also sell 'all natural' shampoo & conditioner sets for less than $20. For $30, we'll do this at home next time. To top it off, there is a sign on the desk when you check out that says 'Gratuities not included, but greatly appreciated' and the receipts they print out conveniently have a line to add a tip. We felt compelled to leave a tip (which I assume goes to the women doing the work), but this felt like leaving a tip for the dentist or doctor. This was our first experience with lice and we felt taken advantage of...had I not been freaked out about getting my family 'treated' quickly, I would have more research and realized there is no special certification or licensing required for this service. Getting a $35 mani/pedi is more time consuming, more enjoyable and requires more 'training' than lice combing... The saga continued...I went back for a 3rd check and was told I was lice-free. Two weeks later, we were on vacation on the east coast and my daughter found another louse. We spent several days of our vacation getting treated again and when I told Bug A Lugz, they assured me that this was a 'new episode' and therefore no refund was offered. The place I was treated at this time told me it was VERY LIKELY the same case given where the nits were on the hair shaft (i.e. the hair had grown and the nits were 1/2 inch versus 1/4 inch away from the scalp). Luckily, the treatment at the place on the east coast worked (a combination of yeast and enzymes that actually breaks down the shell of the nits and kills the lice) and was considerably cheaper. Haven't had any issues since (3 months later). read more

Not a fan. Basically they comb your hair with a ridiculously expensive product (you can buy the equivalent tea tree oil shampoo at your local pharmacy for a fraction of the price.) The big key to their service is a metal comb which they don't sell. I figured this out after paying $400 for my son and I to have the combing and buy the product. After being told I had to come back in four days for the combing again, I found their comb online for $15 and combed myself. I was rid of them in two days of washing and combing. I've had them since and gotten rid of them as fast-- not rocket science. I believe their method prolongs the cycle and infestation of these creatures to their business advantage because in those four day cycles the lice comes back-- just get a good metal comb and use it every day, the concoction doesn't seem to matter much. FYI, Nit Pixie's does sell the comb I found online as part of their kit. read more

Well I didn't go to the salon due to work conflict. . But I tried to use the harsh chemicals on my 2yr old from the store.. poor thing I cried after.. the next day I called and got Dolores to come to my house. She treated my daughter with a safe organic solution and checked my head. When I went to write a review I was very surprised by all the negative ones. All I experienced was professionalism and thoroughness. I went in with my 2 children and husband and we all received the treatment. Which none of us thought stung as much as people are saying. I mean it is peppermint people. Then we came in for a follow up treatment. We have been lice free ever since and that was 6 months ago. why would we want to use chemicals when we can use all natural products that effectively work?! I haven't tried other places but I can tell you if we get those little buggers again, we won't. We will be booking with Bug A Lugz! read more

Really had a good experience. The lice checker seemed to do a really good job and really knew her stuff. Excellent service. Lice check for $35 is really reasonable. I told her that we had done a few lice comb and olive oil over-night treatments, which reduced the lice to almost nothing. She said to space the next over-night olive oil treatment to 4 days since the last one. We did and we're lice free. read more

A delousing salon for lice removal - better alternative to others (this is my third, including Hair Fairies in the city). Fixed price and they charge 1/2 price for follow up visits, which is important so that you do go back for follow up (you need to!) GREAT with kids (videos, drinks, etc.) You have a dedicated private room and treatment person, not someone who is answering the phones at the same time as going through your head and charging you by the minute. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. I ended up going there to treat my daughter when she got lice for the first time. Pros: convenient location, easy to make an appointment. Cons: they give you nothing but a basic comb-out treatment that you can easily do at home by yourself and charge you $200 for it ( 2 treatments are required to guarantee their service/ over $100 each with a tip). What they do is just cover your dry hair with tons of conditioner and comb lice and eggs out with a lice comb (note: no, they don't have some magic conditioner. Any thick conditioner you buy in CVS and a proper lice comb you buy on e-bay for $4 will do the job. Their "special conditioner" simply makes lice less mobile and more easy to comb out). They try to sell you their products, but really there is in no research to support that any conditioner or shampoo can stop your kid from catching lice at school. After the first treatment, I inspected my daughter's hair and noticed over 10 eggs that they had missed just in one spot-- they were visible with naked eye and should have been combed-out during the treatment. My conclusion: if you don't have an able/willing adult to comb your own hair out for you-- go to that place and spend $200 on yourself. It is nearly impossible to comb out your own hair properly, so professional help might be necessary and worth the money in this case. For others in your family, buy a lice comb for a few bucks and some basic conditioner, watch You Tube videos on how to comb out lice properly and save yourself hundreds of dollars. read more

Just thinking about this review is making my head itch but I have to say, I LOVE Sharon and Fiona!! This is the second time my family had to visit Bug-a-lugz in the past two years and it's worked like a charm. The staff is warm and friendly and extremely competent. I give it 4.5 stars instead of 5...only because It is an expensive treatment, but for working parents or anyone who doesn't have the time, energy and know-how to get rid of these little pests, it's well worth every penny!! Two treatments and my girls heads were lice-free! Their products are really nice as well and they make sure to send you off with instructions for maintenance!! read more

This place completely took advantage of me. I went to the first appointment for my daughters treatment. I paid $95 as the website advertises. Afterwards they said come back in 4 days for a CHECK UP. She said "what time on Friday??" Nothing else. So I gave her a time, thanked her and left. I come back today for the CHECK UP and as I'm about to leave they tell me that's another $95 !! I pulled up the website that states "Step 3: We will braid or pull your hair back, provide you with homecare instructions and schedule your follow up appointment in 4 days." I say I thought this was a CHECK UP...they say no its another treatment. The receptionist says that the lady who did my daughters hair only suggests a 2nd treatment. Well that's BS and I say so right in front of the lady who treated my daughter. I say "you didn't SUGGEST anything. You said come back on Friday for a CHECK UP, what time??" Of course the lady just stares at me and says nothing. When I tell the receptionist the lady found 0 eggs and 0 bugs in her hair today so why am I paying $95 for this CHECK UP she has no answers. She will not return my money even though she admits the website is misleading. I ended up speaking with the owner on the phone who gave me a run around and eventually left without my $95 back. They knew they made the mistakes and decided not to do the right thing and as a struggling single mother who works 16 a week in a restraunt at minimum wage, that $95 was so much to me. I will never go back here and hope to bring knowledge to those who do decide to come here. Do not think the CHECK UP is free even though they advertise this and push to make another appointment by giving false information. These people really have no shame. read more
