Ok so being that I'm all the way in Las Vegas I was very doubtful that this would be a good experience. I called and spoke to the baker Johnathan. He was very forthright in stating that due to Covid he was baking from home but that all Covid protocols were in place. He walked me thru the types of cakes he could get by my deadline and I chose the Herman Chocolate Cake. I checked in with him the day before delivery and recd a text when the cake was delivered. The process was easy and flawless because I used CashApp. Now my dad is very particular about things re sweets due to diabetes but he told me that he hasn't ever tasted a sugar free cake so darn good. His cake was delivered on Saturday and since then he has talked about the cake. Even his wife was pretty impressed. Though I didn't taste the cake, I know it was delicious because my dad doesn't play when it comes to food. He said it was fresh and super delicious. And he couldn't believe it was super free as he continued to enjoy it!! Thank you for brightening up my dads birthday as none of us siblings are in the area and I know this made his year!! I was so happy to find someone who bakes sugar free cupcakes, as it appears that most bakeries in town simply can't accommodate. Jonathan runs this bakery from his home in Oakland. When I arrived to retrieve my order of one dozen sugar free cupcakes (vanilla and chocolate with buttercream frosting), the smell of butter and baked goodies permeated the air even through the door. OH MY GOD! FINALLY! If ever you have had to TRY to look for a sugar free dessert....sugar free anything really, but especially a sugar free dessert, you know you're going to have to deal with a few issues. Like first of all, where can I even go? I had previously looked for a fresh, sugar free cake, and got tired of calling bakery after bakery (sometimes being laughed at), and getting the same answer: No, we don't make anything sugar free. Then, I turned to grocery stores...which was also quite a hunt, but finally found a few options. But of course, it was not fresh, there were only a few options, and of course THE BIGGEST HURDLE: it didn't taste that great....or that good really. And even that one store I was getting them from stopped selling sugar free desserts! Fast forward to 2015....today, this very day. I figured I'd give it one last shot, so I turned to Yelp. I typed Sugar Free but before I hit enter I noticed sugar free bakery as an option, so I clicked it. BAM! First search result (under results for near SF,CA) was Mother McDowell's Sugar Free Bakery. I was like, no freaking way....is Yelp toying with my emotions? Am I hallucinating? I shook off the disbelief and gave them a call. I said hello is this Mother McDowell's Sugar Free Bakery....and when he said yes, I said YES! I had no idea what to expect being no one had yet reviewed them, but with no where else to turn, I decided to just go with the flow, ask some questions, and see what happens. Jonathan was more than happy to answer all my questions, and even accommodated a late request (a custom cake) which not only saved the day, IT MADE THE DAY! My diabetic sister hadn't had a piece of cake in years, and teared up when she saw what was there for her: a delicious (and I mean DELICIOUS!) chocolate frosting, white cake with huge strawberries, and strawberry filling. To be totally honest, it's better than most regular cakes I've tried. It was so good, I'll be ordering one for my birthday coming up as well! We had some other folks try the cake as well...real finicky, no sugar free eatin' types. And they couldn't believe how good it tasted. To be honest, it tasted SO GOOD, we even checked my sister blood sugar levels awhile after having the cake, and her numbers were great! I usually don't jump on Yelp so quick after trying something, but this experience, the experience Mother McDowell's Sugar Free Bakery made possible, made it more than necessary. Well I'll be! Because of the positive yelp reviews, I called Mother McDowell's to order a birthday cake for my diabetic mother. The ordering process is non-conventional, meaning you're not calling a store. You call a guy who is sometimes hard to understand because of his cell phone. Pick up is from a residence. It may feel more like a craigslist transaction than ordering a cake but don't let that dissuade you. If you go with it, you will no doubt be pleased. I ordered a strawberry cake with whipped cream icing vs buttercream. It was DELICIOUS. Fresh cream and fresh strawberries tucked between two layers of moist white cake covered in light fluffy whipped cream. I didn't tell guests that it was sugar free until after all had raved about it and no one would believe me. I hardly believed it myself. The cake was decorated with piping and strawberry halves, like a store-bought cake, but the whipped cream icing didn't travel well (but I know this from my experience with Chinese cakes) so if you're looking for something impressive looking, I'd stay away from the whipped cream icing. Just so you know. Personally, it doesn't bother me so much so I will order the whipped cream icing every time. The gent that bakes the cakes is a nice guy. The whole transaction feels like you're dealing with a friend who bakes amazing cakes- it's very casual. You'll feel good about doing business with him if shopping local and supporting your community is important to you. That said, it doesn't take away from the service. I ordered a custom cake and I changed the pick up time for earlier in the day and he was totally able to accommodate me and he didn't charge me extra for anything. Even if you don't give a sh*t about supporting the local community, you'll still be satisfied with the product and service. This is my go-to bakery for birthday cakes from now on, diabetic or not. read more

This is hands down the best sugar free bakery. Not your traditional if you expect a store front, but his customer service is awesome. I'm disabled and he made every attempt to accommodate me. I asked for a dark chocolate fudge with dark chocolate frosting. It was the best and a huge hit at my mom's 65th birthday. Everyone loved it. Place an order and take a chance. I ordered a cake for my dad's birthday and cupcakes for my god-mother. I read all the reviews and was hopeful but honestly not expecting the best. I was shocked and amazed at how delicious these desserts were. It was nothing less than magical. My family has a number of great cooks and bakers and we have no idea how Mother McDowell's got these cakes to taste so good. I was so impressed that I plan to order my cakes from these guys from now on, and I live in Sacramento so - yes, I'll travel to get this cake! No aftertaste, not oversweet, slightly different texture in the icing but I was good with it (and I usually have texture issues). I love this place. And on top of that, they were very accommodating. I just called Mother McDowell's and spoke with Jonathan (sp?)...I'd called to say how great it was to find a sugar-free bakery, and then I asked him could he consider doing both sugar-AND-wheat free baking? Instead of laughing it off (like others have) he said he'd check that out, said he'd call back the next day if he could make us birthday cake...now I'm waiting with baited breath. But you know, even if it doesn't happen I had to write to ask other Yelpers to give this place a try--if his sugar-free goods are anything like his integrity and sincerity (and the other great Yelp review herein), then us sugar-freesters have found THE place for baked goods....maybe anywhere in the Bay Area. Ordered a sugar-free cake for my mom's birthday and it was DELICIOUS and beautiful. My mom has diabetes and appreciated a cake that she could eat that doesn't have a bitter aftertaste like other sugar-free products. Just tried the Oatmeal Raisin Cookie and wow was it good. I usually do not like sugar free anything as it leaves a funny aftertaste. But these, I just tasted the Peanut Butter Cookie, were soooooo good. Sweet yet not overly sweet, buttery tasting and soft and chewy good. My really good friend is diabetic, but I just knew we had to have cake to help celebrate his big birthday bash. All the positive Yelp reviews helped me find Mother McDowell's. I ordered a half sheet of red velvet cake late on a Wednesday afternoon and Jonathan had the cake ready on Friday morning! He was so unbelievably sweet and easy to work with! The cake was beautiful, tasty and moist - you would have never known it was sugar-free!!! In a matter of hours, the entire half sheet was gone! This was such a find - the ordering process was smooth, cake was delivered to the restaurant where we had the birthday party and the red velvet birthday cake was sooo delicious. None of the guests believed that it was sugar free! Even my sister-in-law who is a good baker commented that it was a most delicious cake. I ordered two large cake sheets for my wedding (one chocolate and one vanilla) and Jonathan was absolutely wonderful to work with. He is responsive, has a great sense of humor, and truly cares about making something special for his customer. Not only did he agree to use gluten-free flour, but he also agreed to use my preferred alternative sweetener, xylitol and sent me a list of all the ingredients he was planning to use by mail. I was so grateful, as we have several dietary restrictions and felt completely at ease. He went above and beyond. We are from Eugene, OR, where there are many alternative dessert options, but needed to find something more local for our wedding in California. Everything was perfect and the cakes were in travel-appropriate packaging. We asked for specific decorations (our initials on one, and mountains on the other) and they looked great! I will post photos of the cakes if any of our guests were able to take some before we cut them. Cakes were a hit - everyone loved them. Thank you!! I was so excited when I saw that Mother McDowell had sugar free cakes. I am diabetic and just wanted something little to go. I live in West Oakland and headed to the address listed on this yelp listing. Got there but could not find the place. I called the number and spoke to Jonathan. He explained he is not a computer person and did not know how to update the Yelp listing. He now bakes out of his home and delivers and it turns out he lives just a few blocks from me. I went to his house and he wanted to gift me some cupcakes but I bought them and they are so so good. I normally do not like cupcakes because they are too sweet but these are yummy! I almost cannot believe they do not have sugar but I just tested my sugar level and it has not spiked. And the whip cream on top is yummy.... So give Jonathan a call....he will bake to order and he is the real deal!!!!!! HIs number is 415-571-1597. Right now, he needs 24 hour advance notice for orders.
