    Sugar Free Peanut Butter cookie!
    Shawn R.

OH MY GOD! FINALLY! If ever you have had to TRY to look for a sugar free dessert....sugar free anything really, but especially a sugar free dessert, you know you're going to have to deal with a few issues. Like first of all, where can I even go? I had previously looked for a fresh, sugar free cake, and got tired of calling bakery after bakery (sometimes being laughed at), and getting the same answer: No, we don't make anything sugar free. Then, I turned to grocery stores...which was also quite a hunt, but finally found a few options. But of course, it was not fresh, there were only a few options, and of course THE BIGGEST HURDLE: it didn't taste that great....or that good really. And even that one store I was getting them from stopped selling sugar free desserts! Fast forward to 2015....today, this very day. I figured I'd give it one last shot, so I turned to Yelp. I typed Sugar Free but before I hit enter I noticed sugar free bakery as an option, so I clicked it. BAM! First search result (under results for near SF,CA) was Mother McDowell's Sugar Free Bakery. I was like, no freaking way....is Yelp toying with my emotions? Am I hallucinating? I shook off the disbelief and gave them a call. I said hello is this Mother McDowell's Sugar Free Bakery....and when he said yes, I said YES! I had no idea what to expect being no one had yet reviewed them, but with no where else to turn, I decided to just go with the flow, ask some questions, and see what happens. Jonathan was more than happy to answer all my questions, and even accommodated a late request (a custom cake) which not only saved the day, IT MADE THE DAY! My diabetic sister hadn't had a piece of cake in years, and teared up when she saw what was there for her: a delicious (and I mean DELICIOUS!) chocolate frosting, white cake with huge strawberries, and strawberry filling. To be totally honest, it's better than most regular cakes I've tried. It was so good, I'll be ordering one for my birthday coming up as well! We had some other folks try the cake as well...real finicky, no sugar free eatin' types. And they couldn't believe how good it tasted. To be honest, it tasted SO GOOD, we even checked my sister blood sugar levels awhile after having the cake, and her numbers were great! I usually don't jump on Yelp so quick after trying something, but this experience, the experience Mother McDowell's Sugar Free Bakery made possible, made it more than necessary. Thank you Jonathan, and everyone who was a part of this. You are the best!

This is hands down the best sugar free bakery. Not your traditional if you expect a store front, but his customer service is awesome. I'm disabled and he made every attempt to accommodate me. I asked for a dark chocolate fudge with dark chocolate frosting. It was the best and a huge hit at my mom's 65th birthday. Everyone loved it. Place an order and take a chance. You won't be sorry!!!

    German chocolate cake. Delicious!

Are the desserts only made upon request? Are there desserts already made so you can go and check them out? What is the sugar substitute used?

These items are on request only. He is a home baker. I do not know what sugar substitute is used but Johnathan can answer all your questions.

Why the HELL have I never been here?!…read more for starters, I have a really bad gluten sensitivity, and finding a place like this feels like an oasis. Immediately after coming in, you are greeted with a shelf of delicious gluten free goods, a freezer full of REAL gluten free bread. Not the doodoocaca stuff you can buy at the regular store. I'm talking baguettes and sh*t. But then that's not all. They have an entire menu that you can dive into and munch on if you are just looking for a quick bite. What the f*ck Mariposa, hell yeah!

Let me begin by saying that I think this place has the best key lime pie I've ever tasted, and I…read morecan eat gluten. I also like that this location has longer business hours than most GF bakeries and serves breakfast all day as well as lunch items. Another big plus is the allergens are clearly labeled online and in the shop. However, I've had negative experiences here on 3 consecutive visits. I go here for my gluten free partner. On one of the visits, I ordered a stuffed bagel and waited for 15 minutes before going back up to the counter to say that I still hadn't received my order. It was busy, but by this time, the person standing at the counter had nothing to do. They apologized and made my order then, but the experience left a bad impression on me since it was my first time eating inside the bakery. On my next visit, I ordered several items inside the bakery to take home with my pickup order and received a pain de chocolate instead of a cinnamon donut, which I didn't notice until I got home. The pain de chocolate costs more and my partner wasn't able to share it with me due to a soy allergy. I suppose I could've been paying more attention, but these items don't have similar names at all, so I was not expecting this error. That said, I made a mental note to pay more attention when ordering inside the bake shop for future orders. On my next visit, I ordered a mocha cupcake and berry muffin, but the cashier rang me up for a hand pie instead of a muffin. Again, the hand pie was more expensive. This time I caught it and asked for it to be corrected. I work in customer service and I act with kindness when mistakes are made because we're only human. However, I believe 3 negative experiences in a row shows a pattern and warrants some attention. I will continue to patronize this business due to the reasons I mentioned at the beginning of this review, but I will now have to be vigilant in ensuring that I receive the correct items and am charged the correct amount. This of course is not ideal. I hope service improves.

They're in a location that used to be a Subway. I've only have their cookies, I'm a sucker for good cookies. I particularly recommend their Peanut Butter Miso (a flavor I don't think you can get at a lot of places, sweet savory), and Ginger Molasses. I've also been supporting them because they're part of the Rewards Network Dining. I subscribe to the program to get Alaska/Atmos points on qualified dining, and I'm trying to get as many points as I can, so dining with restaurants as part of that program is helpful. You can order full cakes as well as they have slices avaialble for purchase. I got a tiramisu slice for my mom, which she said she liked. Good addiiton to the neighorhood.

Their primary focus appears to be on their special order cakes-which look amazing. The woman at the counter was friendly and helpful. After asking a few questions, I decided on the Passion Coco cake($5) and the Brown Sugar Pecan scone ($3.50). I enjoyed the Passion Coco cake slice. The coconut, passion fruit, and strawberry flavors worked well together, although the passion fruit flavor was very subtle. The sponge was cake moist, and the butter cream was spot on with its melt-in-your-mouth creamy texture. The Brown Sugar Pecan scone was good, but it had more of a dense muffin texture than a traditional scone, and the flavors were a bit muted. They did not skimp on the pecans though, which was nice. I would have enjoyed bolder flavors and a more traditional scone texture. Overall, I found that the walk in options are limited, but a great spot for locals to stop in and pick up tasty baked goods-and I would definitely order one of their beautiful and delicious looking cakes for a special occasion.

Food looked delicious, I got myself a blueberry strudel cheesecake!…read more Service put me at ease when he told me about the options of historic cheesecake. When you go inside all the cheesecake and cookies, Peach cobbler just makes you feel so at home and feel good. Place was operating well, seem like a great business. I was surprised that no one spoke of business specifics in their reviews. There is a limit to how many can come in; and you are not allowed to touch anything when inside. There are also no prices listed anywhere. We thought this was odd. Our order: * Personal Peach Cobbler * Walnut Brownie * Banana Pudding For these 3 items, our total was over $25. The service was friendly but a bit awkward. You are only able to see cases of dessert options, it is more of a pick-up point, not so much a bakery location you can browse. I wouldn't suggest coming as a large group, there is no where to sit to enjoy your baked goods and parking is very difficult. While the cobbler and banana pudding were good, I wasn't a fan of the brownie. My partner enjoyed the cobbler a lot, but when we did the calculations, the prices were astronomical. I'm not sure what gourmet difference the items contained, but we likely would not come back to this bakery considering prices and parking. The location is cute, in theory, but with no actual location or displays, or price lists- what you pay for doesn't balance out. The lack of transparency for prices was very sus to us. I'm sure the business will continue on especially with how much they charged. I can't imagine the bakery location and building rent costing a lot as far as operating costs; as it is small, and not expansive at all. The price of the baked goods doesn't even go towards branded packaging. Which could be understandable. The only beverages available that I seen was Nesquik. Steep prices with no justification - especially when you have other bakeries in the area, in addition to Nation's for Pies, very affordable and classic as well. E&J's has a great banana pudding and cobbler as well for $6- they are also a Black-owned business and family operated. Absolutely no bad intent, just wanting to share transparency in my review so Yelpers know that prices are not listed, which means they are subject to fluctuation- in this economy that is not a fair way of doing business. One star per item we liked, for this review. As much signage is visible upon entry regarding rules and limited persons for entry at a time- not one area provided prices; only signs that tell you not to touch. It's required by law for prices at every establishment to be listed, according to SB 478 for general consumer goods and services in California.
