    Bbq baked pork bun
    Tiffany P.

Stopped by randomly exploring Oaklands chinatown, from the outside you wouldn't tell its a bakery but once you enter in you can smell the aroma of the fresh baked pastries and bread. When I arrived around noon there was maybe 5 people ahead of me and only waited like maybe 2-3 mins to be called up next which was fast. Once I began to order the worker didn't understood me since I spoke english so she had to get another worker that spoke English. He was really nice! For bbq pork bun it was really soft, there was a lot of filling. However the taste was different than I was used to. It wasn't bad but not my preference. The mini pineapple buns were definitely delicious! The hot dog bun id pass it was pretty salty. I got everything for about under 8$ i'll definitely come by to try other items!

We were in Oakland Chinatown, so we had to pick up some baked goods from Wonder Food Bakery. Pineapple Buns, Taro Pineapple Buns, BBQ Pork Buns, Lo Paw Bang, Cocktail Buns, and Custard Tarts.

I had a wonderful quick experience looking for snacks for the kids. Chance upon this place after lunch in Chinatown. Everyone was pleasant in the store and I paid less than $25 for a lot of goodies. I tried a couple of them already and they were great. Place was clean and organized, which I totally appreciate.

My go to place in Oakland Chinatown for don tots (egg tarts), cocktail buns and small pineapple buns. Cash only. The ladies speak English too! Support local!

Traditional Chinese bakery with reasonable prices and high turnaround for their freshly baked goods. Cash only. Ordered a sampling of a few items; plain pineapple buns ($3 for 5), custard-filled pineapple bun, baked BBQ pork bun $2.25, pineapple moon cake $3, lotus paste with salted egg yolk pastry $2.75, a flaky taro with salted egg yolk pastry $2.75, a ham and green onion bun $2, and their egg custard tart $1.75. All were made well and tasted nice with a medium amount of fillings overall. I bought 15 of the plain pineapple buns (no filling) for Lunar New Year to share and they were a hit with my friends. Love that places like these are still open and running in Oakland Chinatown.

Food: Hot Dog Bun (8/10) - Big in size and worth the price! It was warm when I got it! They tend to keep all of their items warm and fresh. It has green onions which is a topping I love. The wiener was normal but the cheese was also a really good pair with it. Pineapple Bun with Red Bean (10/10) - Also big and worth the price. It was soft and warm with a flakey, sweet, and crispy texture of flavor on top. There was a good amount of red bean inside and was yum. It's overall not too sweet either! Service: Very straightforward ordering at the counter and it helps if you also can speak Chinese. Ambiance: Wonder Food Bakery is a small local and known Chinatown bakery, with people coming in and out and trays of fresh pastries lined up. It's nothing fancy, but it's exactly the kind of spot you swing by for something quick and tasty.

This spot is cash only! I have to say I found this spot because of youtube and it didn't disappoint. I got the bolo bao and it is pretty similar to my favorite spot in SF. Prices are affordable as well!

Really enjoyed the bakery treats I purchased at Wonder Food Bakery. The hot dog buns, the pineapple buns with taro, custard or red bean, the corn and ham bread, you really get to taste an array of flavors. Not to mention they also have egg tarts. Go in the afternoon as they have more selection to choose from.

I have visited this shop once before a few years ago and I was so surprised with all the pastries they had. I tried the egg tarts and hot dog bun at the time--which are huge! I enjoyed them a lot and service of course was very fast and professional. I also appreciated how clean it was inside :) More recently, I've been gifted a few items from here. My new favorite items are their lotus paste flaky pastry and cocktail buns (which are also HUGE!). They are sooo good!!

A great bakery place in the heart of Chinatown, Wonder Food Bakery offers many different types of pastries, including pineapple buns and egg tarts. Today, my friend and I grabbed a couple of custard buns to try. The service is quick, and I recommend bringing cash to the bakery. The bun that I got was quite large and was split between multiple people. It was not too sweet, and I liked the texture of it! Next time; I'd love to try some of their savory buns.

Do the pineapple buns have actual PINEAPPLE in them? Searching high and low for the buns with FILLING.…

No they do not. They're called pineapple buns because the top resembles a pineapple. If you're looking for the ones with filling, Napoleon bakery on Franklin Street has some with custard, taro, etc. Otherwise, Pineapple King in SF and Fremont has…

Is this place still opened? I swung by today and the doors were closed and I couldn't see inside.

Yes, they are still open. Open til 6pm everyday.

    Do they take card?

    It's cash only.

What are the pork floss buns called? They look like cinnamon rolls and are in the oven-looking racks behind the counter. Not the oval-shaped ones inside the glass case with pork floss on top.

They're usually sold in bags or if they have it individually it's usually sometime in the afternoon. I just say the pork floss buns but the circular version ones (tho I usually say this in Cantonese).

What is the price range for 1/4 sheet cakes?

$32-40 depending on the filling I believe.

What are the Top 3 pastries I should try at Wonder Food Bakery?

For everyone it’s going to be different. Because the limited English with the servers, ordering can be a challenge. My personal favorites are the egg custard tarts, custard inside pineapple bun (if you find the correct name for this, let me know!)…

    Do they have sachima?

    Unfortunately they do not.

Do they do the pineapple buns warm with cold butter? I know butter is not common (usually), and I know about Pineapple King in SF, which sells them with butter, but looking…

They come out of the warmer they are in but they don't add butter to it. Butter isn't a normal ingredient in Chinese baking.

Outstanding Asian bakery located on Grand Ave in Oakland! I came here at 1 pm on a weekday, and…read morethey had the full selection of their current pastries. The women working at the counter were so sweet and patiently explained the menu to me as I was picking out my treats. I ended up getting their Okonomiyaki Danish, Banana Milk Milk Bun, and Yuzu Meringue Bun. The danish was probably one of my favorite savory pastries I've ever had! I loved the crispy layers, and the flavors were absolutely on point. The Banana Milk Milk Bun had a great banana milk custard filling that was prominent yet not too overpowering. The bun itself was incredibly soft and had a topping that reminded me of a pineapple bun or a concha, which I loved. The Yuzu Meringue Bun was slightly on the sweeter side, but it was filled with a delicious, tart yuzu creme that paired perfectly with the crispy exterior. Aside from their iconic Okonomiyaki Danish, they rotate their menu with different flavors of milk buns, cream buns, croissants, and other baked goods, so I'd love to come back to try their other items. It's also an Asian-woman-owned business, so I will definitely be recommending this spot to others!

I was ecstatic to try their Yuzu Meringue Bun, but I was quite disappointed with the packaging. I…read moreunderstand it's challenging to find a box that closes securely without ruining the beautiful, photo-worthy presentation, but please consider leaving it open and allowing the customer to close it at their own leisure. Yuzu Meringue Bun -- Spot on with the cruffin and meringue combination. The yuzu flavor was generous, although it leaned a little too tart for my personal preference. I wished there was more meringue -- perhaps having a layer of meringue in the center would have made it absolutely superb! Brown Butter Mochi Bites -- These were alright, but nothing particularly special. They were missing the signature mochi chewy texture, so they didn't quite feel "mochi" enough to truly be called mochi bites. Sesame Cookie -- Unfortunately, it was too hard and crisp for my liking. Crossubi -- A very unique concept and not bad overall. I just wish the interior wasn't quite as hollow; a little more filling would have elevated it.
