I had this contractor out for a small project (gravel install, concrete patch, and some miscellaneous work). The initial quote and communication were fine, but things broke down once the project started. The contract listed payments "upon demolition," "upon completion," etc., which I interpreted to mean after each phase is completed. The contractor clarified that he interprets this to mean payment at the start of each phase. I did not agree with that interpretation, and we were not able to align on payment timing. Work had already begun at the time this disagreement came up, which is why aligning on payment timing before continuing was important. Despite this, the situation escalated quickly. The contractor became argumentative and made personal comments, including suggesting I must have only worked with unlicensed contractors. When I pointed out the ambiguity, I was told, "the contract means what I'm telling you it means," which was concerning. Ultimately, he told the crew to stop and left the job. I've done many projects and haven't encountered this kind of disconnect between written terms and verbal expectations, combined with that level of communication. My goal was simply to ensure we had a shared understanding of the contract terms before proceeding. I would recommend making sure you are fully aligned on payment structure and scope before any work begins. read more
