Had a great experience with Build Your Own Pool out of Mesa Az. They helped me with all the subs and helped create my design for the permits and for the subs to use. I did have some doubts about going through build your own pool versus a local pool builder, however after some of my ridiculous quotes from local pool builders (like 30-40k higher than we built it for) and talking to several homeowners that also used build your own pool I decided to go for it. Now I have subbed out for homes we have remodeled and a few flips so I might have been more comfortable through the process than others might, but I think if you need more help they'd be there for you. I worked a lot with Ryan for the plans at the beginning and then with John Green who we also ordered the equipment through. John was extremely helpful and did not get annoyed with my calls or emails on my many questions. From breaking ground to completion it took about 5 months. The pool builders which we talked to were about 10-12 months out and basically said we wouldn't have the pool until December or January when we were getting bids. Still a lot of work to be done but we finally have a pool. Starting from day 1 of excavation we managed to have the pool built and completed within 2 and a half months. Takes time and effort but worth it in the end. Every question was always answered, and all the subs were easy to work with. Looking forward to having the rest of the yard finished. Please remember that you are the GC. Ive seen reviews like the one before where they pool light was too short. This is stuff you are responsible for noticing, as a GC you should know how long your light run is and how long of a light cord you need. I worked with John and he was great, we even had issues with a drain and he had a rep come out immediately and resolve the issue. I worked with Roy during the design stage and I made several changes over and over to the design and it never took Roy more than 24 hours to make changes or respond to questions. Poor quality and attention to details. An error in hard scape qualities that the contractor based his bid on caused a $2,600 change order. When I asked them to help with a some portion of this cost I was told it was my responsibility to verify their work. They also tried to tell me I gave them the measurements, which I did not. There were other error that cost me money, but this was the most significant. I signed up for their so called "Premium" service agreement. There are other companies offering a higher level of assistance that I recommend you consider before deciding. Good luck building your own pool as a first timer. read more

YOU are the contractor, you must be involved throughout the process so please keep in mind you must check emails daily, place calls to the companies you want to work with & it's a great learning process along the way! I can't believe just how helpful our guy Roy was, we described what we wanted in the drawing & he did exactly what we described, however Roy took it one step further and offered a second drawing (which we chose) of a completely different pool plan & we absolutely loved his recommendation! Roy was available every time we needed him, John was also extremely helpful too! I know, had we gone with another pool builder, our pool would have been out of our price range but thanks to BYOP & Wholesale Pool Equipment, we stayed very close to our original budget! Now that the summers here, we will stay cooler than last summer & it's all because this company cares about their customers! This is the only way to build a pool. I received bids from Shasta, Presidential and Cal Pools before calling BYOP. That gave me a ballpark cost and also provided me with a professionally done design of what we wanted. I took the design to Ryan with BYOP and he used that as a template to create my final pool layout and plans. I paid their fee ($1995) and almost immediately got a huge list of contractor bids for every phase of the project. All I had to do was pick one for each phase, call and schedule. BYOP gave me a "timeline" for the project so I knew what order to schedule the phases. They also gave me a packet with everything I needed for my permits. I walked into the city permit office and had zero issues getting my permit. When I began scheduling contractors it was obvious they were all familiar with the BYOP process and were very helpful, making sure I hadn't missed any details. I only had a couple of questions for Ryan but he answered calls and texts immediately. The equipment bid from their Wholesale Pool Equipment side was also the cheapest I could find anywhere. From the first phase (existing yard demo) to swimming was about 10 weeks. Maybe a bit longer than having a pool company do it for you but it was so easy it was worth the wait. We did our entire backyard with top of the line equipment, finishes and landscaping and paid about $45,000 when it was all said and done. Doing the math the same job from a pool company would've easily cost $65,000 or more. If you're skeptical, I get it, I was too. Now that I've taken the leap I am so glad I did. This is the third pool we have built. We are in the construction industry and we thought the service provided by BYOP would make the process a little easier. The BYOP representative convinced us we would be best served by paying $ 2,500 for the premier service. Additionally we paid a $1,000 to have them design a ramada. Our package which was supposed to include a complete backyard design, email & phone support as well as 3D drawings. Lets start by saying the 3D drawings were not to scale and somewhat rudimentary. Essentially this is sorta cool but useless. We never received backyard planning designs. If our rep is feeling ambitious it takes about a week for him to email or call us back. As far as our pool plan, we received a plan that we would have gotten with the basic package. (When you look at their packages online, notice line 11 on the preferred package is the same as line 4 on the basic package) The pool plan was sent to us with the wrong address, which we requested to our rep to please change. We have never received a set of plans with the correct address. This has resulted in our telling our subcontractors offices that the address is incorrect. However the subcontractors seemingly just give their personnel the plan with the incorrect address, leading to my fielding multiple phone calls asking where we live. It actually led to one sub calling me questioning, "Why do you need us if you already have a pool?" To which I replied, "You are in someone else's backyard and that you should probably leave sooner rather than later." I am curious how many subcontractors went into that backyard and how heavy a sleepers those people are. Another issue was that we requested our pools structural engineering so that we could seek bids outside of the contractors that BYOP sent our plans to. We were told we could not have them. Several of the quoting contractors contacted us and BYOP requesting them and were also told that they can't have them. So our quotes were complete with caveats and contingencies. We were told that our plans and engineering were submitted to the city and that we should receive a permit in a few weeks. Two weeks later we contacted the city and were told that nothing had been submitted and that they had no record of our address in the system at the time. We contacted our rep who told us he doesn't handle that part so he can't say for sure what was going on. The next week we learned our plans had been submitted a week later than what we were told initially. We scheduled excavation and requested our in floor pool design. When the excavator had finished we tried to schedule a plumber who said they needed the in floor design which we had been waiting weeks for. When I pressed our rep for the in floor design I received an email from the in floor designer with a plan for a residence in Mesa (We live in Peoria) for people with the same last name. We are building a square pool and they sent a kidney shaped pool. I had to point out to my rep that this was not my pool. So you can see how much attention to detail and customer service you get with the premier package. Three days later we received an in floor design that was correct. At this point I was still requesting the design for our ramada, which they sent me a few days later (seven weeks in).The design and engineering were nothing remotely like what we requested or the 3D rendering BYOP had sent us prior. We had sent pictures of exactly what we were looking for which the rendering matched. We had been asking our rep should we be meeting with anyone to discuss the design, to which he answered no they knew what we wanted. "We have a picture." I was a little more than disconcerted that the premium service. Keeping score we had gotten a pool plan with an incorrect address, no landscape design, an in floor plan for a pool in Mesa and a ramada that looked nothing remotely like what we asked for or their own 3D rendering. Our rep took the tact of blaming literally everyone else for all of these errors. He told us that the way that BYOP had been restructured he had almost zero ability to resolve our issues. I am an extremely patient person so I politely asked our rep to redesign the ramada and let me know how soon we could get a correct drawing. I assured him that I understood how busy construction was and that I get it these things happen. Three weeks later my wife contacted our rep who hadn't been responding to our calls or emails. He responded that we were the cause of the delay and since we didn't accept what they sent us initially we would need to pay quite a bit more money. My wife told him this was unacceptable. She asked him why this wasn't brought up three weeks prior? He told her, "you are in construction why didn't you just handle this yourselves." My wife asked to speak to his supervisor and he hung up the phone on her. Probably go with the basic package and cross you fingers. Good luck. read more

Just finished up our pool build with the help of BYOP and we are very pleased. After meeting with 7 different pool builders we were shocked by the price quotes we received. Then we were turned on to BYOP from friends of friends that just had completed their project. We were very skeptical as neither my wife nor I have any background in construction or even project management. But after talking it over with someone that had just completed their pool and was happy we decided to give it a go. With the help of BYOP throughout the process, we made it through and felt confident during each phase of the project. We started a Build Your Own Pool in October. Initial sales and consultation was great. Ongoing consultation has been good also. For a $3k fee, BYOP measures everything; provides a design spec; gives you a list of equipment to purchase from their sister company, Wholesale Pool Equipment; recommends subcontractors and helps with any questions/issues. Excavation started in November, we were told if all goes well, two months total so we ordered equipment in November, $14k worth, seemed like a good deal at the time. Plumbing and rebar in December. Gunite was backed up due to heavy demand, January. Then we had an ice storm in TX, which wreaked havoc on many existing pools and new pool construction. Equipment, construction materials became scarce and expensive. Tile, coping took about a week, however it took a month to schedule. Same subcontractor did the deck, which took over a month to schedule. Long story short, electric work was done in June and the electrician, recommended by BYOP, went to install pool lights and one needed a longer cord. We called Wholesale Pool Equipment and were happy to hear they can exchange the light for same model with 150' power cord, for difference in price, and they had four in stock. The next day, John, the head of sales at Wholesale Pool Equipment, told us, sorry, we can't exchange the light because 1) the box had been opened, and 2) it was purchased more than 60 days ago. So, now we're stuck with a $700 paper weight :( read more

My wife and I were excited to use build your own pool due to the many positive reviews. We bought the best premier plan. Unfortunately we didn't have a good experience. First, we were never contacted after we bought out plan and had to make many calls to get out pool plan. We never received the 3D pool plan as stated online for the premier package and never received the help we needed to build our pool. Thankfully we had a friend who built his own pool that walked us through the process. The biggest issue we had was that they had the wrong dimensions on our pool plan. This caused several issues as our pool was bigger than what the plan had. We had to have the contractors rebid after the excavation due to the difference. We would have built a smaller pool due to the increased price after the accurate dimensions were given but it was too late because the pool was already dug. This caused a huge issue when we had the inspector come because the permit information they submitted was incorrect. We had to pay additional money to revise the permit and had to go three different times to fix. Overall, this was a terrible experience and caused many more headaches than benefits. We would not recommend build your own pools. read more

Ordered 2 energy efficient variable speed Hayward pool pumps on a Friday and picked them up on Tuesday since I live in the general area. The sales force is super and the pricing is great. I live a block away from another pool supply chain in the valley but they were quite a few hundred dollars more than B.Y.O.P for the exact thing. Online or in there showroom they can't be beat. I will be using B.Y.O.P all the time now. Installed the main variable speed pump and the water feature pump in a couple of hours and they work great.
