We had a wonderful experience from beginning to end with BYOP! We were a little skeptical in the beginning (especially after getting multiple bids with pool builders that were so high) - but we have ended up saving literally THOUSANDS of dollars partnering with BYOP. Doug was a pleasure to work with and is VERY knowledgeable every step of the way! BYOP is the only way to go! We would do it again, and again and highly recommend using them. It is such a big investment and BYOP exceeded our expectations. Thank you BYOP!!

This is the only way to go when considering an owner build pool. Absolutely the best investment I made for this type of project. Todd is incredible - his advice, suggestions, and foresight is unprecedented. You save a ton of money going about this on your own, and you do have a partner in the project - BYOP. I called/emailed quite often for questions, and received quality and cost-saving advice throughout the ENTIRE process, not just the initial setup. You will not be disappointed, building a pool can be challenging, daunting, and overwhelming but these guys know how to make it go smooth and put your concerns at ease. 10 stars if Yelp could let me.

Just finished up our pool build with the help of BYOP and we are very pleased. After meeting with 7 different pool builders we were shocked by the price quotes we received. Then we were turned on to BYOP from friends of friends that just had completed their project. We were very skeptical as neither my wife nor I have any background in construction or even project management. But after talking it over with someone that had just completed their pool and was happy we decided to give it a go. With the help of BYOP throughout the process, we made it through and felt confident during each phase of the project. Now don't get me wrong, we were very nervous on the first couple of days of excavation, but every trade that BYOP referred us to was very professional and did an excellent job. Overall we saved money and still upgraded our project in several areas. Thank you BYOP for the support and we are happy to our pool done and ready for the 2019 summer season!

Ask the Community - Build Your Own Pool

What area's do you provide your service? Do you have subcontractors for customers in California?

We can design a pool for any area.. Yes, we have trades that work with BYOP in California.

Do they recommend subcontractors for various parts of the job? Or just design the spec?

It depends on what you are looking for. If you are BYOP customer, they give you all the contractors for the job. If you are looking for a certain trade, let me know and I will try and assist.

    Bluewave Pools & Spas

We decided to use Blue Wave on the recommendation of our daughter's father in law who had had a…read morereally nice pool built. We also did our due diligence and got quotes and proposals by a couple of other pool builders. Steve came out to measure up and do our pool design. He listened to everything we said and was able to incorporate it all into a beautiful pool. We love our backyard, and because we have a good sized side yard that is where we wanted to put it, even with the zero lot line design of our community's houses Steve was able to do this in a way that worked well. We were looking for a pool that my husband could do laps in, I could float around in, and our grandkids could play in-with a seat down the entire length of one side, along with a big bench area. The pool in total was 40ft x 10.5ft, and included a waterfall, and we added on additional travertine decking and a pergola. Once we had decided on the design, Steve went through every single feature and pool option to make sure we knew what each item was and what would work best for us, to get our final quote. After signing the contract, the most annoying part of the process commenced. This was not the fault of Blue Wave, we just happen to live in a county island so Maricopa County was in charge of issuing the pool permit-with the longest waits for approval, and it didn't help that we were also building a golf cart garage at the same time. Other cities in metro Phoenix will allow for the hole to be dug prior to the permit being issued so they get a head start and reduce the total length of time for the whole process from start to finish-not so in a county island. However, as they will tell you, pool construction will take 6-8 months from the time you have your hole dug. For us it was 6 months. Yes, it is frustrating to have piles of earth around the construction area, but there's nothing you can do about that. What I will say about Blue Wave is that we found all the subcontractors to be excellent. I talked to all of them while they were doing their thing. It's a fascinating process to watch. They were all very respectful of our property and cleaned up afterwards. All the contractors showed up when we were told they were coming. Even when there were a couple of hiccups, as there will inevitably be in a large construction project, they were quickly dealt with. Blue Wave was great about me changing my mind about the pool tile a couple of times during this, and when I was still agonizing about my choice (I was a bit particular) they were able to bring out an extra selection of tiles that had one I absolutely loved. They also made a couple of other changes for us during the process with no problem in doing so-we changed to colored lights and expanded the travertine and the size of the pergola. The pool is now finished, we are just waiting for an ozone bulb to be replaced and the trim on the pergola legs to be installed imminently. The pool looks fantastic, better than we expected, and we can't wait to take our first dip in it. Michelle who supervised the schedule, and put up with my emails, was fantastic. She was very responsive to any questions we had. If she didn't answer an email the same day, she got back to me the following day. Jason and Shane the construction superintendents were also great. They were able to answer any questions we had when they came to do their inspections. Steve came up with the perfect design for our particular space and needs. John the company owner called us personally when one of our options was unavailable for the time of installation due to supply chain issues, and suggested a comparable alternative so there would be no delays, which we were happy to take. It's a bit of a nerve wracking process, and not without a lot of dirt in your yard, but I would choose Blue Wave again in a heartbeat to build our pool. Thank you Blue Wave, my pictures don't do it justice. Hi

There are far too many issues to list in detail, but the overall our pattern was clear: lack of accountability, and a complete disregard for customer satisfaction. What should have been a straightforward experience turned into a frustrating and stressful situation not once, not twice, but again and again. I gave multiple chances for things to be resolved, but nothing meaningfully improved. It's always been the same on going issue again and again. Save yourself the headache and look elsewhere!!

Because we don’t sell weekly service or remodels, 100 % of our attention and gear goes into answering a single question: “Where is the water getting out?” Every truck carries the core toolkit: hydrophones for sound tracing, precision pressure rigs, and bright-dye tracers. When a pool’s design demands extra sleuthing, we dispatch rotating specialty tools such as gas sniffers or thermal imagers to zero in on hidden pipe runs—no reckless deck demolition required. After testing, you receive a photo-rich digital report that lists readings, leak locations, and relevant visuals so you can see exactly what we found and decide next steps with confidence. People matter even more than tools. Our technicians cross-train in plumbing, hydraulics, and construction principles, and many hold open-water SCUBA certifications to inspect tight spots safely. Most detections are booked within two business days, and we arrive in clean uniforms. Flat pricing is posted up front, repairs are quoted in writing, and every job is backed by ROC licensing and full insurance. The result: conserved water, smaller bills, and a pool or spa that goes back to holding water instead of losing it—all delivered with transparency and neighborly care.
