We had takeout from this restaurant several times last week. It was delivered by Takeout Central. We ate pork barbeque, barbeque beef brisket, fried catfish, hamburger steak, fried chicken, fried okra, collards, mashed potatoes, Brunswick stew, salads, coleslaw and banana pudding. Everything was awesome. The delivery was amazing. Especially in the COVID times, it was comforting to have food delivered in a timely fashion. It was a super easy way to feed a family. Was directed here by friend of a friend as a place to try for BBQ. This was NC BBQ and while I didn't love it was overall good. Price was cheap ($11-12 for sample platters) and tried Brunswick Stew (I liked - sort of veggie soup/stew) and BBQ/Fried Chix sampler - fried chix was good. Reminder this is a family restaurant - no alcohol (mostly b/c a beer would have been great with their meals!) Some sides were really small. read more

Not pit cooked BBQ so in my opinion, it is not as good as say Hog Heaven which does pit cook their BBQ. The veggies are bland and the potion TINY like you would get in elementary school. I have there a few times but it seems to have gone down in quality and quantity of the years, so I don't see why it is still so popular. I suppose people like being loyal no matter the food quality. Friendly people not so good food. Cold ribs that seemed reheated, canned vegetables, brisket was ok, tiny bland chicken, hush puppies were good. Ok, look... if you are expecting a "fine dining"experience, this is not the place. This is a grab some delicious fried southern food on the cheap, eating experience. If you love classic Fried Southern food, this is a great place to go. Their vinegar based, Piedmont style barbecue is solid. Their Brunswick stew is the best I've ever had and the fried fish is delicious (IMO). The menu is massive. So much to choose from. Service was friendly, and we felt that the food was delivered in a timely manner. Now, Here's where it gets a little inconvenient; the interior of this place is strait 70s or 80s. This place I has not been updated since before. Reagan was president and doesn't give you a real clean vibe. It's frequented by a much older crowd and maybe that's why the old ambience. But it's always packed. They do not take debit card, credit card, Apple Pay, bitcoin. Lol,. They only take cash!? And conveniently enough they, have an ATM right at the entrance so they can hit you up for another $2.50 fee. If you're more of a Texas Steakhouse/BBQ fan this isn't the place for ya. Adequate but unimpressive. We had chopped pork BBQ and catfish. The food itself was actually pretty good, and well cooked. The BBQ might have been chopped a little finer than I expected but was seasoned well and I had no worries about it being cooked. The catfish was fried perfectly and I could probably eat my body weight in the little hush puppy things that were brought out at the start. That said, the experience was undone by how cold the place was. I know it was 75 degrees outside at the time, but the restaurant was easily in the low 60's and I was shivering by the time I got done eating. I mentioned it at the checkout station and got barely a shrug in response. Major points off for being cash only. This place has been here for about 60 years. there's s reason why there's a line out the door to get in. Possibly the best barbecue brisket I've had in a very long time. My coworker said he had been coming here for 30+ years. The decor is what one might expect from a restaurant that had been in the same place for a long time but I think that gives it its own unique character. This is my favorite sit-down (Eastern NC) bbq joint! (Although Huey's in Mebane gives it a real run!) I'll give the top nod to Bullock's because they also have good take-out. (Allen and Sons has more fat and gristle in their take-out than eat-in which is greasier than Bullock's so they're not in the running.) So, as you can see, I'm a NC native with the usual hesitation about saying this place has the best Bar-Be-Que! It's a classic, plentiful food, faster service than you expect based on the line. Not the easiest business to find, since it's set back from the street and you could easily miss it. Parking behind that. Closed Monday just like Huey's. Not fancy, but top-notch eats! read more

I hired Bullocks BBQ to cater an event for our neighborhood pool opening party. We were all so impressed with the delicious food which included chopped pork BBQ, barbecue chicken and fried chicken, pasta salad to die for, great tasting cole slaw, delicious potato salad, soft dinner rolls, and of course, great hushpuppies. The sweet and unsweet tea was given a thumbs up. The lemonade was just right on a hot day on Saturday, June 1st. To top it all, the banana pudding was so good that the guests wanted to go up for seconds and they did. The kids enjoyed the brownies and assorted freshly baked cookies. All this for a reasonable $ 11.95 per person. We had 132 attendees who are 132 more fans of BULLOCKS. They arrived early enough to be ready to serve at 5PM. The two servers were simply great and worked very hard going back and forth in keeping the supply going. I've been bouncing in and out of the Triangle for four years now and finally got around to trying this place and it did not disappoint. If the service was any friendlier I would have to start buying everyone there Christmas gifts. Old School southern classic abound in a clean efficient (and did I mention friendly) environment. I had the chicken and dumplings, Mac & cheese, Green Beans, and Fried Okra. If you are looking down home cooking and friendly faces, this is your place. I will return. I am 69 years old and never written a review about any place or anyone, but I felt compelled to write this. I just picked up a take out order a couple of hours ago, have not eaten anything yet but I am sure the food is going to be better than the service I received on the phone when I placed my take out order. The lady that answered the phone immediately asked me to hold on, which was fine as I thought she was helping a customer in front of her. She just laid the phone down and what I heard was a 3 1/2 to 4 minute conversation with a man about his knee problem. During all of this I said hello a couple of times and thought maybe she would come back to the phone. Well she finally did and said "this is Linda Bullock, how can I help you?" No apology about her little social visit while I was waiting to order. After placing my order I asked her for the total, she said "hold on", I heard her helping a customer, then after about 2 minutes I just hung up. She did call be back 15 minutes later to give me the total. Then when I get there to pick up my order and went to pay, I am sure she recognized the order. Again, no apology. I thought the way I was treated was very rude and very unprofessional. Was also surprised to see their rating was 94, I would have expected it to be higher. One other thing I would like to comment on. In the past when I have picked up a to go order, you would always hear at least a couple of employees laughing and cutting up with each other---didn't hear any of that today. Although the food is ok the fact that I had no idea that they don't take credit cards until I was ready to pay. The only indication was a tiny sign pasted to on the cash register. Little too late in my opinion. Also they had no problem directing me to the ATM in the lobby. So after the $2.50 ATM fee and my banks $2.50 charge, my $8.00 meal was now $15.00 with tip. While we have been too Bullocks many times over the years tonight was a horrible experience. We haven't been in a good while and the menu had changed. The waitress was new and was nowhere ready to be on the floor without help. When ordering we had several questions about the menu which she incorrectly answered. Our drinks were not refilled and we had to ask another waitress who in turn told us that our waitress was new and she told them she wasn't ready to be on the floor alone but they put her out there anyway. When we went to pay we questioned the bill and the older lady told us that the sides that we asked about were extra when the waitress told us they came with the meal. When I told her that the waitress did not know the menu and wasn't ready to be on the floor she got an attitude. I said we shouldn't be charged for something because you have put someone on the floor that relayed the wrong information. My daughter asked for a manager and she said she was the owner. She said it wasn't fair for her to take that charge off of our bill and was very rude about it. She tells us that if we have been there before then we should know the menu and the pricing. Are you kidding me, it is the customer's responsibility to know the pricing and not your waitress? While the food was good it became our fault that Ms. Bullocks's waitress did not know anything about the menu or the charges for the sides. We will definitely not be going back there again. I guess this would explain why their business has dropped off over the years. Do yourself a favor and chose a somewhere that appreciates your business! read more

I'm from durham and I've been going to bullocks since I was a child. I honestly don't know why Bullock's Isn't in the top 3 BBQ restaurant list on yelp. Their food never disappoints. They thought of everything without me asking. The cutest elderly couple delivered the food and were so very gracious and kind. I've lived in Durham all my life and have only been to Bullocks a couple of times (20 years ago) ... so when I got a craving today for some good old-fashioned Southern food, my husband and I paid a visit. Well, it's not much to look at from the outside. The parking is kind of odd (vehicles were blocking a couple of entrances), and I question the decision to put an enormous nasty dumpster right there in front of the building. You have to walk past it to get to the entrance; it's not the best way to welcome your guests! The interior isn't much better. It's comfortable and clean but it has not been updated since 1978 or so. The walls at the entrance are covered with autographed photos of country music stars and athletes from their glory days (70's and 80's) and a lot of the patrons have probably been regulars since that time. You'll see plenty of walkers and canes, plus-sized individuals, Bubbas wearing baseball caps at the table, and some big blue / white hair all jacked out to Heaven. Now, I'm not passing judgement, I'm just accurately describing what I saw. You should know what you're getting into! The service was fine. Our waitress was All Business. No greeting, no welcoming smile, no warmth, no personality ... but she did her job. Now, most importantly: The Food. We both ordered the pulled pork BBQ with mustard greens, fried okra, potato salad, and sweet tea. We enjoyed the complimentary hush puppies and our food got to us shortly. It was delicious! The BBQ was moist and flavorful, the potato salad was like my momma used to make, the fried okra was fine but lacked "something" I can't quite put my finger on, and the greens were very good in spite of not being drained completely (there was a little puddle of water in the bowl when I finished). Although it didn't affect the taste of the food, you should know the meal was served on cheap melamine plates and bowls, and the utensils were just one step above the type that are stamped out of a sheet of metal (this is a pet peeve of mine). Still, it was a great lunch. It's not fine dining. It's not the place to take a date. This is where you go when you crave a taste of the South and just want to refuel and go ... kind of like a gas station. read more

Came here with my mom and we were immediately treated rudely by the waitress, who did not greet us. She dropped the menu down on a table across the room from us, and walked away without saying a word to us. I asked her where we were supposed to sit, and she curtly responded "where the menus are." The people in front of us left before ordering because they were treated so harshly. Food is okay, but I found the overall quality inferior to Hog Heaven and at a higher price. Great place to bring a group with family style service as an option. We've been coming here since I was born. Makes it easy for people to get great food fast and plenty of it! You can certainly choose from a large selection on the menu if you want, but I love the mix of fried chicken, chopped pork bbq, Brunswick stew, fries, hush puppies, cole slaw, and green beans. OK, I haven't been here in 8 years, but I felt I had to write a review. Long story short, when I was in my pre-teens, we lived in Durham (my Dad was a professor at Duke). We had a tradition that once a week, one family member could pick a restaurant to eat at. There wasn't a huge number of places to pick from at our end of town. We has a pizza restaurant near Hillsborough road and Guess. We ate at Hardee's(Carl Jr's) when it was good (yes, it got good again when they re-imagined themselves). We had a fish restaurant nearby and a pretty descent chinese place near the Krogers......and then we had Bullocks. At first, I just got the fried chicken, which was just OK. But one very positive thing I can say about my mother, she made me try just about everything edible, which made me fearless about trying anything new. One day, I ordered the fried chicken/brunswick stew combo. My life has never been the same. I scrapped the chicken and ordered the stew every time.Eventually I got the stew/BBQ combo. Know this, Carolina BBQ is different than any other BBQ. It is not with a tomato base, it's vinegar/pepper based. And it's wonderful!!! The restaurant always has a line, sometimes as long as 30 or 45 minutes. It's worth it. BTW, I had a neighbor that was old-time southern, and she taught me how to make Brunswick stew. Years before that (but after Bullocks) when I lived "in the country" (true, our nearest neighbor was 1/2 mile away as the crow flies), I had a neighbor who cooked the stew the old fashioned way, with an iron stew pot over an outside fire. Her stew too, was fabulous. She would send me home with quarts of the stuff in anything she could find that would carry it. To this day tho', I don't cook it myself (it takes 2 days), but I'm willing to have it delivered from Bullocks frozen and shipped in. read more

A lot has already been said about Bullock's on Yelp. The only thing you really need to know is that they have some of the best Southern Fried Chicken you will ever taste at a restaurant. I grew up in Eastern NC where fried chicken is still king on Sundays. Although I can't say that Bullock's fried chicken is the best I have ever tasted - that accolade goes to some really great home cooks. But, I can say that Bullock's fried chicken is the best I have ever eaten in a restaurant. My first encounter with Bullock's was when I was a student at UNC many years ago. It was the only place I could get fried chicken that came close to home fried. I ventured there many times during my seven years in school - yes, my sophomore year was the best three years of my life. I kept coming back to Bullock's over and over again simply because of their fried chicken and modest prices. I mentioned this to my wife who had not experienced the pleasure of Bullock's fried chicken. We decided to rectify that omission. We were both gushing over the meal. It consisted of fried chicken, hush puppies, slaw and French fries topped off with ice tea. Each and every item was just as I remembered it from many years ago. Not much has changed over the years. The food is fabulous, the prices are moderate and the staff is extremely nice. We were staying at the Marriot near RDU airport. The lacrosse team, coaches and some of their family and fans were also staying there. They all wanted to know where to get two southern staples - fried chicken and barbeque. We both immediately and without reservations recommended Bullock's for fried chicken. As far as barbeque is concerned, Bullock's serves the Eastern style of North Carolina barbeque. Their barbeque is fine but far from the best I have had. But, barbeque is not the reason we patronized Bullock's. If you are headed through Durham on I-85, don't pass by without stopping in at Bullock's. You will not be disappointed. read more

Just relocated to Durham temporally for 4-6 months and I looovvvveee BBQ anything. I have never had Carolina style BBQ before. This was my first place I went to. I looked at the menu looking for Ribs and did not notice them on the menu. I asked the waitress what I should have and she said they are known for their BBQ, Stew and Fried Chicken. So I said gimme that.. It came as a good portion of all of them with Hush puppy and slaw. The slaw was so so The hush puppies were great, even better when you add their sauce to them. The stew was OK but I had my mind set on BBQ. This BBQ was good and flavorful and was really good when you add the sauce that is on the table. Would have been awesome on an onion roll. Then I picked up the fried chicken breast, OMG was it great. It was the best I have ever had. I could not put it down until I had completely devoured it. What ever you order get a piece of chicken too. I went back another night we two parental units and they had the scallops which looked and tasted awesome. We split the Baby back ribs I finally found on the menu which were awesome! Hey make a Catergory for Ribs on the menu if BBQ is in your name! I also tried the Spare Ribs which looked and tasted like they slow cooked the in the oven. No Smoke ring, not much flavor. Come on cook them the same as the Baby backs! Because Bullock's calls itself a BBQ joint, I'll review it as such. Bullock's does not cook their pigs with wood smoke any more. It's not NC BBQ if it's not cooked with wood. Sorry, it just isn't. Beyond that, I've had plenty of decent non-wood "BBQ" that I found edible. Bullock's does not even count as edible -- I think they buy the cheapest pigs they can so they can push out quantity and maximize profit. The meat is only vaguely meat; it's mostly fat and gristle. The texture is NOT pleasant, not even slightly. Please, please, I beg you, do not take Bullock's as representative of my state's proudest tradition. This is definitely old school. Very family style type restaurant. My wife and I stopped in last night for dinner. I got the regular chopped bbq plate. It came w/ cole slaw. The bbq was really good and the slaw was tasty. Their house made hot sauce went well with the bbq. I also enjoyed the hush puppies. Nothing fancy about this place. Cash only and no alcohol. Theirs is still the best Eastern style barbecue I've had, chicken is like someone's grandma fried it, and the sides are Southern perfect. This is the food of this region, and if you crave it regularly, you belong here and you will love Bullock's despite the negative reviews of whiny Yelpers.
